Owner description: Altos de Chavon, is an architectural wonder, a 16th century replica of a Mediterranean village perched high above the Chavón River. The village was designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro, and created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa. Dominican artisans handcrafted the stone pathways, decorative ironwork, furniture and enchanting buildings, reviving almost forgotten crafts of metal work and stone carving. Under Coppa's direction, each stone was hand cut, each wooden door frame was handcrafted and each wrought-iron detail hand-forged. Construction of the village began in 1976 and the village was inaugurated in 1982 with the concert of Frank Sinatra at the amphitheater. Altos de Chavon was built as a center of culture for the Dominican people.

“Altos de Chavon”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

We spent a few hours in Altos de Chavon. The views were spectacular! The amphitheatre was unbelieveable- Elton John was playing there the next night. The shops and artists' boutiques were quaint. I wish that we could have spent more time there that day.

“Pretty views”

This is a nice little place to go to get away from your resort. There really isn't much to do here, but the views are very lovely overlooking the river.

Consider a small Italian villa in the Caribbean, with awesome views , sightseeing, and great food. It is a must if you are visiting Casa de Campo, and the famous amphitheater where Frank Sinatra, Sting and others...

“Not worth the time”
Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

This is not a real village but merely a replica. It has been used as a movie set more than anything. Time would be better spent at other locations here!
