I have nothing but praise for this resort. Every aspect was fabulous. We had a beautiful ocean-front Jr. suite. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was gorgeous. The walk-in closet made me wish I brought more clothes! The view from our balcony was breath-taking. I was looking for a resort that was adults only, no buffets, no wristbands and no silly chair-saving games. I found all that and more at Secrets Sanctuary. I could have sat at the Blue Marlin Restaurant all day and just enjoyed the views but the food was fabulous as well. We never had a bad meal at any of the restaurants. Loved the Wok and Italian Restaurant as well. Never waited more than a few minutes for a table. As reported in other reviews, the beach directly in front of the resort is a bit small but the beach directly to the left is huge and absolutely stunning. If you want to feel like you have your own private beach, spend an afternoon there. You can walk out into the ocean about a half mile and still be in waist high water. I liked that the resort was not too large and probably only about 40% occupied. Once they are fully up and running it may prove to be a bit challenging to find a shady spot to sit however. I would not hesitate to return to Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana!

We have spent there 6 marvelous days and nights. The whole ambiance and infrastructure provided the basis of an incredible holiday. The food was superb. But, the most important asset is their staff, everybody is friendly, smiling and trying their best to make the stay an unforgettable experience. Kudos for everybody, I will be back for sure. Special mention for Dolores !!! She really makes a difference !!!

In fairness, I must say that during our first night at Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana, we were kept awake by a big wedding party from Venezuela that was booked last year before Secrets took over the property. But management more than made up for it with a sincere apology, room upgrade to an ocean villa, and a his-and-hers massage at the spa, which was fantastic. We stayed there April 30-May 5.

The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. It's also in Cap Cana so the ride from the airport is only 15 minutes.

Our room was one of the best we've ever had. Deck looked out onto the Caribbean and we could walk out the door, around the corner, and onto the beach.

Front beach is small, but nice. There are also beaches on either side, which are beautifil and mostly deserted. Pools are big and clean, and main pool bar was terrific.

Meals were very good. We didn't have a bad dinner. Ate at all restaurants except the Wok, which was closed the one night we decided to go there. They stagger restaurant openings at dinner. Seafood at the Blue Marlin was fresh and well prepared. Breakfast featured fresh fruits and baked goods. Meat and seafood at the steakhouse was also good. Same for the Italian restaurant.

Service throughout Secrets Sanctuary was excellent. Maids, barkeepers, and wait staff all wanting to please.

They are still dealing with some reservations taken before the change in management, so we saw a couple children. But it was manily adults and not hard partyers, who are better advised to head up to Bavaro. Not a late night scene or heavy activity trip.

but for an adult getaway at a beautiful, laidback resort with great service, Secrets Sanctuary can't be beat.

We had been moved to Sanctuary from Golden Bear Lodge, and notified of the move in early April, as Golden Bear was shutting down and under new management. We were thrilled with the transfer to Sanctuary. We were traveling with another couple and upon check-in were asked if we wanted to upgrade to a Royalty Villa. We saw it and immediately said yes. This villa definitely made our stay a different experience. The villa was beach front, where we could step from our private deck to the sand on one side, but had complete privacy and endless ocean views on the other side. With the 2 bedrooms, living room and huge deck with dining area, sitting area, lounge chairs, a palapa with a bed and our own pool, we spent so much time at the villa. And took advantage of the minibar beverages and room service.

The staff was amazing! They all went out of there way to please and were very friendly. Carlos at the pool bar, Tony and Mildred the activities directors, all of the wait staff, everyone really made this gorgeous and luxurious resort even better.

Here is how to ensure yourself a wonderful vacation- remember they are trying to prepare international food to satisfy many tastes. The food was always average to excellent, depending on where you ate and what you ordered. We discovered early on that the fish was always fantastic, so we ate at the Blue Marlin several times. Breakfast was a treat everyday, as you can order from the menu and go to the buffet (yes the gentlemen I was with did both everyday!). Room service is prompt and we realized that the cheeseburger sliders and croquettes (like large tater tots filled with cheese) were consistently great.

Where the resort struggles is with consistency. The caesar salad was different in every restaurant ranging from great to poor. You can order the drink of the day at the Blue Marlin and get a completely different drink at the pool. We ordered a Chi Chi (a less thick, not as sweet, pina colada) probably 15 times and every time it was slightly different, but always tasty. And just because they have something on the menu doesn't mean they know how to make it- we ordered a calzone to share as an appetizer for lunch and it arrived 2 hours later. But they kept apologizing with a smile and brought many Presidentes to make up for it. When it arrived it was pretty awful. And just because an activity is listed doesn't mean it will happen, we joked that it was more a rough outline of what could happen that day. Drink making class- never happened, paella making-nope, rum tasting-never saw it. I could go on and on. If you really want to make it happen you almost need to be assertive and ask when and where. Fishing only happened because the husbands insisted and helped them get the fishing gear together.

However, aside from those few issues, the food was good and the drinks were always top shelf and delicious. The beach is beautiful and the whole resort is well maintained.
The spa was gorgeous and the swedish massage was perfect in every way. The resort itself was only at 30%-48% capacity while we were there, so the service was outstanding and we liked that we got to know several other couples at the resort. Exchanging information about restaurants, drinks, things to do, etc. was essential.

While there, definitely take the shuttle to Caleton Beach. It was nearly empty both times we went and they provide beach chairs, towels, etc free of charge (drinks and food is not however). I have traveled to some of the most beautiful beaches and until now had ranked Kapalua beach on Maui as my all time favorite. It has been replaced by Caleton Beach, it really was spectacular and worth visiting a morning or 2 while you are there.

I'm just returning from a 5-day stay at Secrets Sanctuary. I booked this package through Luxury Link and was scheduled to stay at the Golden Bear Resort, but switched to Secrets Sanctuary less than one week before our trip. While I never made it to Golden Bear, I can't imagine it being able to trump Secrets Sanctuary.
It was pretty late (around 10pm) when we arrived and I was pleasantly surprised to find The Steakhouse still open for dinner. After a bite, stopped by Love Piano Bar before retreating to our room for the night. We were originally placed in a ocean-view junior suite, but after a call from our Luxury Link customer concierge the next morning, we were upgraded to a fabulous 1,300 sq.ft. honeymoon suite in the Fortress. We had a private pool and sun deck and an absolutely gorgeous view. Front desk staff should be a bit more helpful and more knowledgeable of what amenities are available.
In the light of day we were really able to take in the beauty of the Spanish Colonial style resort and it's meticulous landscaping. The resort was maybe 30% full, so we often felt like we had the place to ourselves and never had trouble finding lounge chairs near the main pool. The beach is not very large and despite the efforts of the staff, gets speckled with seaweed every few minutes.
Breakfast at Casa Bella was delicious. We ordered a la carte one morning, but opted for the expansive "continental breakfast buffet" for the remainder of our stay. We had lunch at the Blue Marlin most afternoons and enjoyed the food for the most part. Although my boyfriend had the red snapper for lunch one day and it was overcooked and quite tough. The restaurant offers a nice breeze while sitting on the deck and provides a welcomed break from the sun. Our dinner at the Wok was, by far the most enjoyable. We ordered from the menu, as there are only two teppanyaki tables. Wok was only open two nights during our stay, so be sure to check the hours when you arrive and plan accordingly.
The spa is currently located in a converted suite within the Fortress. It is too small and not what I consider full service. I had a manicure and the portable manicure desk fell short of my expectations. Also, there was not much to choose from in the nail polish department (color and quality). I could've done my honey's pedicure because they used the same portable foot spa that I have at home. Even though both technicians were nice, I would suggest waiting until the new spa location is opened next to the Wok restaurant.
Water in the shower took a while to heat up, and drainage was a bit of an issue. On one evening we didn't have any hot water and had to call maintenance. They didn't get it fixed until the next morning which was bit of an inconvenience.
Service all around was good. We found all the staff to be pleasant and engaging, but Marlene was definitely our favorite.
Construction is going on nearby, but we never heard a peep.
I would definitely return to Secrets Sanctuary - maybe with a group next time.
Side note: Secrets Sanctuary is adults only and I did encounter a female guest going topless at the main pool.

We had a room with a nice sea-sight view. The brightness of the stars at night, in the morning the warm sunrise, it was so romantic, so charming. Not a single cloud in the morning, the sun bright, so blue the sea and the beach, so white the sand... waooo!
We stayed by the beach, (take your suntan with you, you will need it!). The sound of the waves, was so relaxing, no other sounds but some birds that come and go.
So quiet, you feel so free!
The rooms were made for kings, and the services are top quality. People is nice, and very enthusiastic to give you the best, makes you feel like they care!
We were enchanted by how good it was the food: gourmet quality. The colors, the sauces, the smell... the variety; elegant, so tasty!
We really valued the small distance from the airport, when you arrive you can't wait! When you leave, you try to stay longer!
What a honeymoon: We will be back!

We have been to other Secrets resorts so this led us to the Dominican Republic. Secrets just took over this resort a couple of months ago so they are in a transition period. I think if there were a 100 people there when we were that would be pushing it. You never had to wait for anything! The resort itself is gorgeous. The staff is very friendly. You will read in other reviews that some staff don't speak much English; this is true. HELLO...you are not in America anymore! LOL. There are 4 pools, 3 of which usually are empty. The pool bar staff is wonderful...especially Tony! He does morning aerobics that is entertaining! The beach is small, but never crowded. The restaurants are not all opened each evening. Be sure to check the schedule when you arrive (we didn't, and missed out on the Japanese restaurant). The steakhouse was by far the best!!!! We had an Ocean View Suite. It has a very comfortable bed, with a separate sitting area & balcony with 2 chairs & a table. The one odd thing; the bathroom is one open room. The shower has NO door or curtain, so you stare at the toliet that is 4 feet away. A bit strange. The housekeepers are excellent! They even folded beach clothes we had left in the bathroom to dry! Each evening you get an itinerary of the following day's events, restaurant openings, etc. I did not get to the spa, but heard from others that it was amazing.

We went on vacation with our only agenda being rest and relaxation.. Secrets Sanctuary was able to provide that and then some! We would recommend this resort to anyone! I am sure as they continue to build up this resort it will only get BETTER!
