I was so blessed to spend a week of quality time with my mother at the beautiful Gran Bahia Principe Ambar. My mom loves the Dominican and wanted to go back after many years so after I have spent the last 5 years in a row going to Mexico this was a lovely change. I had forgotten how beautiful Punta Cana is with it's abundance of palm trees on stretches of white sand before world class beaches.
The resort is wonderful, absolutely wonderful. So aesthetically pleasing with all the greenery lining the many pathways throughout the complex. The rooms are well appointed with great air conditioning, comfortable beds and nice big bathrooms. The lighting is poor however by the closet area but minor detail. The mini bar was attended to daily and our maid Eliana did an amazing job and was very timely in her housekeeping. We were in room 70202 on the second floor where our balcony looked out to a canopy of palm fronds, banana trees and heliconia. So peaceful and beautiful. The second week of November was hot hot hot and very humid so we were grateful for the comfort of our room.
Typically I am a beach person but Mom loved the pool where the water was nice and warm. She has some mobility issues but the pool had easy entrance areas for her. It was pretty difficult to find a chair early in the day but it was very hot to sit there anyway so we spent some time at the beach and then to the pool later in the afternoon.
Every staff member we encountered was warm and welcoming, friendly and happy. Such lovely people and are a huge asset to this resort. Mom was "mama" to everyone. Jackson especially is a sweety. Such a nice man, tireless, from morning to night engaging the guests around the resort. Every time he saw my mom he welcomed her with open arms.
We loved the buffet where Juan, another sweety, gave us our mimosa's in the morning. The food was good to pretty good. Lots of selections. You can tell there is a lot of pride in the work that the kitchen staff does to present such a lovely display of food daily. The Seafood Gala on Tuesday night stood out as the signature night of the week. They worked like crazy getting the food and tables set up with the glasses all gleaming, rose petals on all the tables etc. We had the early seating at 6.30 and all the staff, the greeters, the waiters and waitresses and even the chefs were in line to welcome us to dinner. So nice. The al la cartes were lacking in atmosphere and were not easy to get to in the evenings in the dark. We decided that we preferred the buffet. The restaurant at the pool was one we visited daily for lunch with nice outdoor seating and a yummy selection of salads, pizza, etc. the wait staff there too were very attentive and the beer nice and cold.
Speaking of beer, Presidente is pretty good and always cold from where ever I received one. We also enjoyed the pineapple daiquiris and assorted liqueurs. The waitresses in the evenings inside and out side the lobby were so professional. Massiena (sp?) was so good at her job carrying those full trays of drinks all evening long. She is truly a credit to the resort.
The shopping was OK and we found the prices (US dollars) throughout were fairly high but you could still haggle in most of the shops. We found all the staff in the stores kind of pushy, but very friendly.
It would be so nice to return to this resort among the palms again. My husband would love it especially with the variety of fresh fish that you can select yourself and have cooked by Rodolfo
(another sweety) at the buffet. I really can't find fault in anything, except maybe the poor WiFi in the lobby. It was certainly worth every penny to vacation there and my Mom and I highly recommend it.
