“Best vacation yet!”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Ambar the week of April 7th. Our overall experience was excellent! The grounds were beautiful and the staff work very hard. The staff is very friendly however we witnessed some rude guests. These are the people who turn it around and say that the staff are rude. If you want a vacation in New York City and the fast pace then you should vacation there. This is an island. People need to relax and stop being so demanding. I treat people how I like to be treated.

The food was very good at all the restaurants and the buffet was just as good! The waiters were overly attentive. We treated them as people and would enjoy conversations with them instead of being demanding and complaining. I asked how there day was and about themselves. I go on vacation to enjoy different cultures and the language. I don't speak Spanish but I enjoy learning!

Our room was clean and the fridge was stocked daily. I wrote a nice note the first day and asked for lots of extra water...AND we received LOTS of extra water! The fridge worked fine and the beds were comfortable. Staff came twice a day with clean towels and yummy chocolates on our pillows each night. We were in room 65310 and it was great...in the middle of the complex so a perfect location for us.

We go on vacation to relax and to have fun. I don't go with a list of criteria to be met. If your attitude stinks so will your vacation. Leave that at home and perhaps yourself.
This place isn't for snobby people..go to your Ritz-Carltons' for that!

We loved this resort and definitely are returning next April!!!

Back from Ambar on weekend of 13/6/2014. having spent two weeks at this lovely hotel and location. If in any way some of this review seems slightly disappointing it's only because of an illness to my wife second week which took the shine off the whole thing. Having said that there is a doctor on site at the hotel 24/7 and appointments are easily available. you do not pay for consultation, you only get charged for any treatments. He speaks excellent English and there is a pharmacy in the medical center. An excellent set up and service.
Travelled out on a Thomson Dreamliner in Premier. Other holiday makers on the same flight in standard class informed me that the extra width seats were comfortable. I question whether the shambles at the Premier desk at Gatwick, ordinary flight menu and indifferent service made the extra cost worthwhile. I would think twice about going Premier in the future.
Airport at Punta Cana a trial where Immigration officers try to get an additional 10dollars after you've already paid it. No receipts here. Porters very good and worth while for a small tip. Coach journey to resort no problem and about 30 mins.
Several couples on our coach , all going to Amber. Arrived with luggage and in spite of numbers check in was reasonably efficient. Restaurant and room requests were met and we were one happy couple. we were in 62308 near to the Lobby and not too far from pool and beach. Room was as good as we've had in the Caribbean, well maintained and clean. Maid service was good although sometimes items not fully restocked. Lack of coat hangers for people staying two weeks but easily rectified with a quick call to express services as was the replacement lightbulb needed in the bathroom.
The whole place is beautiful and excellent value for money. The beach is as good as we've visited and don't worry about the towel game unless you want front row seats. Beds and shades were plentiful and there was always a refreshing sea breeze as long as you were somewhere near the front end of shades. The beach waiter service was a bit hit and miss but just as quick to get your own drinks at the beach bar.
Lunch at Las Brisas was excellent. Good choices wines and drinks and good service. Lunch at Palmyra the main restaurant was a bit more up market and again drinks and wines were plentiful. At this point I must say that the house wines, red white and rose were all excellent standard and the same wines wherever you ordered them on the site.
Dinner at Palmyra was the highlight for me and we were well looked after by Carlos the maitre D and Caesar who fussed over us where possible. At breakfast Juan Lopez was pleasant friendly and entertaining. He spoke good English and was generous with the Bucks Fizz or Bloody Marys if required. A small complaint would be that the later you eat at night the more time the staff seemed to spend relaying tables and not serving wines. I might suggest on job for wine severs and one for table layers instead of multi tasking. I must mention Miguel on the egg station at breakfast. A real character always jovial who made amazing omelettes and all other types of egg requirements. Great to see.
The gala dinner each week at Palmyra was brilliant and the Beef Rib at the Carvery outstanding. I was most impressed with the whole Red Snapper and Stone Bass available each day on a self serve basis.
The Lobby bar was warm as previous reviewers have said. Never noisy and none of the entertainment would disturb those early to bed. The drinks service was hit and miss with some waitresses not approaching you for your order until after you signalled to them. Sometimes they offered you snacks but most times you had to request them. Exceptions were Massiel who was very pleasant and Albiaris who was excellent.
Guest services proved a disappointment and personally I found the staff unfriendly and aloof.
For all that this place is a great, great holiday destination. You want true five star? Then I suggest you check out the 5 Star prices at UK hotels by comparison. This resort offers value for money in every way. Not everything is perfect but boy do they try. just book it.

Room Tip: 3rd floor corner rooms are best, but any room is in easy walking distance of all facilities.

Okay so i will just start out by saying..... we booked the luxury ambar hotel because they advertised the location as an adults only resort. But what they dont mention is the hotel is for people 60+. The pool bar closes at 6 and the pool at 7. The lobby is VERY mellow. Upon arrival we were impressed with the initial treatment. We were greeted with drinks and the staff was kind. The second day we had 200$ stollen from our room. We went down to guest services. They had the security guard come up to our room. they asked permission to do an investigation, ofcourse we insisted. But instead of looking into what maid stole our money, they investigated US! They went through our entire room, only to tell us " their investigation was inconclusive" ( because they didnt find the money in our room) Guest services was horrendous. They were extremely rude and non-apologetic. Eventually they offered a massage with a value of 120$. The massage was okay,I was suppose to receive an hour massage plus exfoliation, they cut my massage short by 15 min.
They advertise the resort as "all-inclusive". Yes the drinks and food are included. But activities they offer are not. There are "shows" that are free, however the "show" consists of a host and a few dancers on the stage and then they ask for crowd participation to have the guests do activities for everyone else to watch. The other shows they offer, are $35. On the site, they say you get an hour a day of the water sports/ activities. However if you dont have experience with these sports you have to pay $45 for a lesson. For example, my boyfriend wanted to try and wind surf. They would not let him unless he first took the lesson which cost money, even though we had other family memebers who could of taught him, he was denied.
Room service has less than 10 items on the menu. One of our family members called for room service on 3 different nights, they only actually received their meals 1 time. We asked for them to bring us bottled water ( because you cant drink the tap) and were told "it is not apart of their services" and they never brought it.
I could go on and on about how awful the resort is--- yes it was very beautiful. But not worth the money. As a side note, there is a HUGE language barrier ( I do speak a little spanish) but most of the staff didnt know alot of english, which may be the reason for alot of mishaps.

I will say the other resorts that we went to seemed alot more lively and the staff was kind. Emanuel was one of the only staff members that was extremley helpful and kind, he was AWESOME.

All and all, i would say save your money, dont book here

My partner Jo and I have just returned from a blissful two weeks at the Bahia Principe Ambar booked through First Choice. This review covers the whole holiday including flights.

We've travelled with First Choice on a number of occasions for all inclusive holidays and have been to Bahia Principe hotels in Mexico and the DR previously. Both companies offer outstanding value for money in our opinion and this holiday was no exception.

First of all, the flight out from Gatwick. We travelled economy on the 787 Dreamliner and found the legroom to be excellent as well as the service from an enthusiastic crew. The flight was on time and the journey turbulence free. The onboard entertainment system was great but was perhaps let down by the audio quality of the free headphones handed out at the beginning of the flight.....we may invest in a decent double socketed pair of headphones for the future.....

Transfer time to the hotel from Punta Cana airport was thirty minutes or so however getting through the airport took best part of an hour. Be sure not to forget your $10 to get into the DR and $20 to get out! That said, we got to the hotel with plenty of time to hit the pool, which for us was a first when travelling on mid morning flights to the Caribbean.

As repeat guests we were given a trouble free personal check in at the hotel and were whisked away to our room via trolley cart in no time at all. There are four hotels on site and all guests are dropped off at the main lobbies of either the Bavaro or Punta Cana hotels. If you are staying at the Ambar or Esmeralda then you are taken by trolley cart to your room from there.

We requested via email prior to departure, a top floor room in block sixty one and were delighted to get a corner suite which was a larger room and balcony than the others within the block. Note however that there are no lifts.... not a problem for us but can be for some. We asked for this block because it was equidistant from pool/beach and the Ambar Lobby.

The Ambar hotel is adults only and was a good choice for us. The facilities and grounds were all excellent as were the staff who were all friendly and attentive.

The Beach

Simply breathtaking. fine white powdery sand which was cleared every morning of natural debris. The sea, despite being on the Atlantic side of the island was clear, warm & reasonably calm as it is protected by a reef a couple of hundred yards offshore. A lifeguard was on duty through the day and made sure nobody went out beyond the roped off swimming area which extends some thirty yards off shore. You can walk/run for miles in either direction along the beach which we did most mornings.

Ambar Pool & Bar

The pool bar is the best area to congregate and socialise. It can get a bit hectic when the animations team get going but it is a great place to meet other people. We love the mix of American/Canadian and British guests that you tend to find in the DR and met some great people here.

Restaurants

There is a good mix of restaurants throughout the hotels. we enjoyed the Don Pablo (gourmet) and Garden Grill (steakhouse) best although the buffet restaurants were excellent too. Our drinks were filled regularly and we tipped accordingly. The only exception to this was the Santa Fe which we left when we didn't get the attention we became used to at the Ambar restaurants.

We emailed through a list of reservations prior to departure for the first week which were arranged and presented in our arrival pack. We found the restaurant booking app not to work particularly well so we booked further reservations through customer services directly without issue.

Other Hotels

The facilities of the Punta Cana, Bavaro and to an extent, the Esmerelda hotels were all open to us in addition to those on Ambar. As we were pretty spoilt at the Ambar, we didn't use them very much....however we did visit the Bavaro and Punta Cana lobbies a few times as well as the sports bar. You don't get premium drinks here but the service was good. They did seem quite busy and were more raucous than the Ambar however which we thought suited a younger crowd.

Excursions

We booked three, Saona Island, Quad biking and surfing at Macau beach.

Our first was the Quad biking tour. First Choice do not offer this option (you can book a dune buggy trip however) so we booked through Air Canada which was recommended by our excellent rep Nathan. The tour lasted for a morning and included a visit to Macau Beach, a cave pool and a local farm. We enjoyed it although it was not as good as the trip we did last year in Samana. The highlight was the stop off at Macau beach which had some fantastic waves (no reef) and a really gently sloping white sand beach.

We noticed people surfing whilst we were there and this led to our second excursion which was a mornings surfing lesson through the Macau Surf Camp. Again our rep Nathan contacted MSC for us the following day and arranged the trip for us. They picked us up from the hotel and dropped us off again afterwards. The tuition was brilliant and both Jo and I were up and surfing well before the end of our session. We couldn't recommend MSC highly enough....

Our final trip was Saona Island which was a full day and booked through First Choice. It was a bit disappointing and certainly not worth the money. The ninety minute transfer was too long despite the best efforts of our guide Thomas who was a fountain of knowledge on all matters of the DR. The speedboat (a single deck Catamaran) was a bit too small for the number of people on board on the outward trip. The sandbar, described as being in the middle of the ocean was in fact just off-shore and yielded little in the way of sea life except a couple of starfish which were found by the guides. The other stop was a brief snorkelling opportunity where again there was little to see.

The beach where we stopped for lunch on the island was not as good as the one at the hotel and the lobster meal not plentiful enough. The best part of the trip was the sail assisted Catamaran back to the mainland although the banging music and forced dancing was not really to our taste.

Watersports

Kayaks, Hobie Cats and Windsurfing are free for an hour each day....sadly the single windsurf board as out of service for the duration of our stay and the Kayaks did not have back supports. We did however make use of the Hobie Cats. An hour lesson costs $35 and you are then set for the rest of the holiday. We had great fun sailing out to the Astron shipwreck and along the coast. You have to pre-book your hour slot the day before however.

William & Leandro

Whilst all the staff we interacted with were great, special mention has to go to the guys at the Ambar Lobby bar which we used most evenings. Despite it being a busy bar, both were always entertaining and cheerful and kept our drinks topped up without being asked. To us that was exceptional service and was really appreciated.

Nathan

Our First Choice rep was simply outstanding. His briefing on the first morning of our stay was brilliantly delivered, well timed and informative. He went out of his way to put us in touch with the Air Canada rep when we asked for a quad bike excursion which First Choice did not offer and contacted the Macau Surf Camp on our behalf without even being prompted to do so for our surfing trip. Nathan was the best rep we have ever had on a First Choice Holiday and that is saying something as they have all been excellent.

Departure and Punta Cana airport

On the day of departure you have to book out at midday and make your way to the Bavaro lobby for the transfer to the airport which picks you up at 13.15 for a 17.05 flight. We initially thought that this seemed a bit early to be hitting the airport but we found the Airport at Punta Cana to be one of the best small airports that we have ever used. It's a great little airport with good facilities and open air feel....even though our flight was delayed we thoroughly enjoyed a beer, some food and a world cup match in one of the bars there....

Finally...

Our two weeks at the Bahia Principe Ambar was the best all inclusive holiday we have been on. First Choice have improved the flight experience through the introduction of the Dreamliner, which gives you more legroom than the old 767. The price of the holiday offers excellent value for money and once again the Bahia Principe hotel chain have come up trumps with an outstanding hotel which has plentiful facilities, friendly & attentive staff and is exceptionally well run.

We recommend this holiday without hesitation and will look to return in the future. Next year however we plan on trying out the Bahia Principe in Jamaica!!

Room Tip: Corner rooms are bigger with bigger balconies. Third floor rooms are quieter but bear in mind there...

Having returned to the Bahia Principe complex for the 5th time in 5 years I can only say it gets better.
We arrived at the Bahia Principe Ambar on the 27th May, departed on the 6th June, celebrating our honeymoon. We had a wonderful blessing on the beach in the Ambar resort.
Can I just mention a few points, it is a large resort and would take 25mins to walk from Bavaro reception to the beach area. There are shuttles running up and down all day and through the evening, so for those less able it would help. The staff I found to be great, yes they are Hispanic speaking but also have to get to grips with Dutch, Russian, French, so please cut them some slack, sometimes things get lost in translation.
I have read some review's and I struggle with some complaints, did not witness the towel game, in fact polite notices were posted on the sun beds at the pool requesting no reservations before 8am. Food was very good, restaurants within the Ambar were excellent.
One afternoon a group of young men walked in and took to the pool after a member of staff had pointed out the wrist band denoted they were in the wrong area, they swam to the bar and were refused drink, problem solved they left. I have to say all to often its the guests that cause problems not the staff.
Did not see any children at the pool or at the outside restaurant, I had read a review which mentioned they had been present, I can state I never witnessed any.
Some reviews complain about the humidity in the cocktail area of an evening, its the Caribbean, there are no walls so therefore no air con, if you struggle with the heat try going earlier in the year. All a le carte restaurants are air conditioned.
Rooms are very good, all buildings are no more than 3 stories high, no there are no lifts so if you struggle on your feet you may need to be on the ground floor.
No problem booking reservations for a le carte, guest services were great, very helpful, just take your time and be patient after all your on holiday.
So overall, great time, lovely place, gardens immaculate, food great just keep in mind there are over 2000 rooms so the logistics of running the resort are mind blowing, not all rooms can be cleaned in the morning.
Early morning walk on the beach is a must.

We are a couple in our mid 40's that has traveled to many all-inclusive resorts and have been to Punta Cana twice before this trip. This was our first time staying at this resort. I am an avid user of TA and I want to provide a very honest review.

Pre-trip: We booked our trip through Apple Vacations, which I have used for all most all of our travels. I think that they provide a great service and price. We also arranged for a private transfer from the airport to the resort and back. I highly recommend this- it saves a ton of time! I emailed the resort 10 days prior to our trip requesting dinner reservations, room location preferences, info on the spa, and info on the romantic dinner on the beach. I also told them that we would be celebrating our anniversary while we were there. I received confirmation and information the next day via email.

Arrival: We found our Apple rep very quickly at the airport and he drove us to the resort - taking only about 20 minutes. He dropped us off at the sister resort to the Ambar- the Bavaro. It seems that this is the main hub for all of the resorts. He told the bellboy that we were to go to the Ambar and they put us into a cart and drove us over. Once we got to the Ambar, that's when things started to be confusing. We went to check in at the desk- as I have done at EVERY hotel that I have ever stayed- and the woman behind the desk said, "Oh, you're with Apple- go over there." and pointed to some seats. After a few minutes and woman came over and told us to go eat at the buffet and hurry because it was closing in 10 minutes.....? and then come back to see her then. Check in is at 3pm- it was 2:50pm... While at the buffet, we quickly grabbed some food and they turned out the lights. Not a good impression so far. We went back to the lobby and found the lady who had told us to go eat. She was involved in some other guests that were very unhappy. We waited patiently and when she finally acknowledged us- it was like she didn't recognize us. I refreshed her memory and she told us to go sit down... again. Finally she came with a packet and our room keys. There were only dinner reservations for 3 nights and we didn't get the building that we requested.

Room: We stayed in building 61, room 305. When we got to our room, there were balloons and a sign that read "honeymoon"....I mention this because we met others that were celebrating specific occasions and the resort thought that they were celebrating another. (It was really funny one night at Don Pablo when all of the waiters came out and sang happy birthday to a man, but it was their anniversary) Our room was decorated inside as well with flowers. balloons, and towel sculpted swans. There was also a gift on the bed of two tee shirts and a small bottle of rum. The room was "fine" nothing special. We and others had issues with the room keys not working. There is a specific way to put it in and pull out to get the door to open. I figured it out, but my husband had a very hard time with it. The refrigerator in the room did not work properly. We finally started to request a bucket of ice and stored it in the fridge with the drinks in it. The bed is hard, but I found this to be the case at most AI's. The shower is nice, but leaked water all over the floor. There isn't any place (expect a soap dish) to store items in the shower- which is a problem. I wish that I would have brought a small caddy to stick to the wall. I read on TA to bring an extension cord- which was a great tip as there are very few outlets.
The cleaning of the room was spotty. There wasn't any consistency of when the room would be cleaned. The floor was very dirty from the first day and wasn't cleaned all week. We did receive turn-down service on two nights- which was very nice.

Beach, Pool, and Grounds: All were very beautiful and very well maintained. We are beach people and didn't use the pool, but it looked very nice and clean. People are definitely up very early to reserve their spot on the beach. We found that we didn't have to play this game and still got a good seat by going all the way to the left side of the beach by the bent palm tree. We were always able to get a place in the second or third row back with a good view of the ocean. The ocean was not as wavy as other places that we had been in PC. It would be nice to have brought a raft to float in the ocean. There was a fair amount of seaweed on the beach and in the ocean- I had not see this before in PC. The resort workers kept it all raked up and very clean. I noticed others resorts around did not take the same care and it was pretty dirty. Bavaro beach is a very crowed beach- there are many resorts side-by-side. We stayed at Excellence a few years ago and loved how secluded and uncrowded the beach was there.

Food: I have to say, the food at the Ambar was the best of all of the AI resorts that we have been to. This is where the Ambar really made up some ground for me. We ate at all 3 of the a la carte restaurants. 2 times at Don Pablo and Portafino and once at Olivio. I honestly enjoyed Olivio the best. The first night at Don Pablo, our service was so quick and we had eaten 4 courses and were out the door in less than a hour- not the experience that we were looking for. It seemed chaotic and rushed. We had reservations again there for our anniversary. Again, the dinner started to be rushed. My husband finally asked them to slow down a bit. We were there 90 minutes that night. In every restaurant including the buffet, the desserts were fabulous!!! I never ate anything that I didn't like.

Excursion: We did the zip lining tour, which we arranged through the Apple rep at the resort. $90 per person. We really enjoyed it! Highly recommended! We also had a massage at the spa- again, it was fine. Not the best, not the worst that I have had. $80 for 50 minutes.

Wrap up: All in all our trip was "fine"- not great, not bad. Inconsistencies with the room, service, staff were off-putting. I think that if our check-in would have been better- say with a cold drink and a warm reception- we may have started on a better foot. First impressions are lasting impressions. I won't be returning to this resort, but my decision is not based purely on the resort. We did not prefer the location or the beach being so crowded. We love the DR and will definitely will be returning there!
