“Happy vacationer!”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

We have been to Stanza Mare three years in a row! Once in December, March, and earlier in May for nine days. And we are just happy to be able to take a vacation here! Our condo(s) because we stayed in more than one! Last years, and this year, we stayed in same lovely, well cared for, abundantly stocked with everything by the owners Bonnie and Sam. These owners have even installed a washer and dryer! And yes the complex is going through some changes, but the place is cared for. The pool is beautiful and perfect for a little night swimming which I did with our daughter. And yes the restaurant was closed, but I didn't see a lot of people utilizing it in the first place. We ate there once three years ago and it was fine, we were hungry. We much prefer going to the market, bakery and big grocery store in El Corceto. We love experiencing everything while in the DR! Went out two nights for dinner at Outside In that is in walking distance. And yes there are some bugs that need to be maintained, which the complex does take care of and I'm glad they do! We never had any problems with our condos with Don (owner of one) and Bonnie and Sam (owners of another) they have all been flexible and accommodating. I feel sorry for those that have had bad experiences, but maybe you should look at the sunny side of things instead. It's nice when people pull together for when they need things...and maybe talk directly with owners (like I do) before renting! We will return, and like everything, things need to have maintenance from time to time, it's not the end of the world or for Stanza Mare to say the least!

Firstly, for an honest, down to earth review of Stanza Mare, I would ask you to read "Not All Paradise" and "Not Ready For Prime Time" as they have both truly stated the problems of this vacation spot. Then I would like to add: There is no restaurant on location. It was closed down while we were there. The stoves, fridges, (all appliances), the sinks that were attached to the walls, right down to the salt and pepper shakers were taken by the previous management. They also removed all furniture, plants, pictures, chairs, and anything else they could possibly lift out, from the once was, beautiful entrance way. The old and new management teams obviously have a bad taste in their mouths for each other. With all the things that need to be fixed there, from the pool to buying new restaurant everything, etc. etc. it would take a large sum of money. There is no money there to buy anything, they are broke. So besides all of this and again the two reviews you should read, a couple more things you should know are: When Easter holidays are there, it is an eye opening experience. They celebrate for a week. In a condo they will have as many people as they can squeeze into it. The people below us had approximately 20 people in it. They party as loud and as long as they want, every night. This can mean up to 3:30 a.m. or whatever. Don't even try to get near the pool, as they come in hordes with their coolers of booze and drink from morning till the wee hours of the next day, with absolutely no consideration for the vacationers who have paid good money to be there and who are trying to enjoy their holiday. All rules are ignored at this time (only for them) but the rest of us are to obey the rules outlined by the condo association.

We have spent one week here. In spite of the varied opinions, we can just say positive things.
The place is nice, a kind of funcional architecture that melts in the enviroment. The flats are spacious and convenient. God value for the price. There are shops and a french coffe near by. Lots of restaurants on the beach. We have found a nice cuple for playing beach wolly. The beach is quite windy, good for swimming and taking bath. There is not much to see under the water here. There are some dive operators who run dive trips. The trips are somewhat overpriced as they are in Caribbien.
The people are nice and friendly. A taxi driver run after us with my left camera... That is difficult to find a working ATM here!

Just came back from several months at Stanza Mare. Have to say, this was the most disappointing of our several years there & we won’t be back next year. There is so much upheaval & bad feelings, all the long term renters say they’re ready to go home. Read other comments written this year. These comments are extremely accurate!
I would like to note that we were not the type of people who sat around complaining all day. Most of us have been going to Stanza Mare at least 3 years & have spent a fair amount of money there. Our main complaints are about bad units, missing items & poor treatment from the property managers who manage most of the units.
If you’re planning to go there, or you’re an owner who hasn’t been around for awhile, here is what you need to know.
Yes, there was a change in the complex management,(not the same as the property managers), Coral Management. They hired a new manager but she quit within a month. Not sure who is managing now..
The internet was pulled without notice & caused many tenants to have to spend $50 a month for their own USB internet connections. If you own an I pad you’re out of luck, unless you buy a mifi for about $100 then pay the additional monthly charge of $50. Yes, you can walk to the store or the bakery, & “most” of the time you can connect there. Most of the contracts said they provided wifi.
Yes, there are a handful of units that are very nice & pretty well supplied, but they are few & far between. Most of us did share dishes, frying pans, etc when needed. Many of us had limited cooking supplies & many of us brought with us things we knew we would need. Most of the furniture is old, dirty & uncomfortable. The bathroom ceiling in my unit leaked & I spoke to my management & the one in charge of the one above me to no avail. I’m sure by the time summer is over, it will be full of mold. Lots of the units have mold or mildew in the drapes, pictures, etc. Our unit & at least one other had a rat inside & a couple others had cockroaches.
Stanza Mare is probably fine if you’re there a week or 2, but if you plan to stay longer, your kitchen supplies can be very inadequate. Some units do not have ovens & often you don’t find that out until you arrive. Many have very poor lighting, some ceiling fans don’t work, & some people have arrived to find they have no sheets or towels for several nights. Lucky for them, most of the long term people loaned them items they needed until they got theirs. Most of the short term renters are usually treated nicely, but the long term renters are pretty much ignored. It’s our feeling they prefer the short term rentals, since most of them don’t know what to expect & don’t necessarily come back. That makes it much easier for the owners & managers. If you have a problem with your unit & want the actual owner to know what’s going on, forget it. There is no way to get to the owner. I think all owners should send a survey to their tenants, asking about their stay.
In Feb, there were never enough chairs at the pool or the beach. If you didn’t get up at 6am you were out of luck until later in the day. Some people took chairs in both places, leaving some chairs empty most of the day.
Even tho Stanza Mare is only 6 years old, the pool is in need of huge repairs, the bottom is coming apart & the tiles around the edge are coming loose, so make sure they aren’t repairing it when you go there. The children’s pool is a complete disaster. There are also chunks of sidewalk broken, even around the pool. They did get new chairs, with pads, around the pool, but they get wet from the swimmers & the weather & don’t dry. If you flip the pads up, you’ll see the beginnings of mold & mildew. Some of the coverings are also coming apart. One day they took some off & washed them, then put them back soaking wet. Many of the beach chairs are in poor condition with cracks, etc. They have no pads & are hard plastic, so bring a raft or some other type pad to sit on.
Many of the long term renters (2-6months) are not returning to Stanza Mare next year. They will go to another close by complex called Playa Turquesa. They are sick of having poorly maintained units & dealing with one of the property managers, who lives on the property & manages quite a few. Since the management didn’t enforce any rules, he decided he would enforce “some” of the rules. The problem is, he picks & chooses the ones he wants to enforce. He was more concerned about 2 women who had small dogs they walked on the grass next to the pool area or carried across the pool area to go to another building! Both of them cleaned up after their own dogs & the ones that came in off the beach. However, it was ok for people to have glasses & bottles of beer right next to the pool, drinking from them while standing in the pool, & children to swim without a parent in sight. Those also happen to be posted rules. One owner brings a bird with them & often brings it around the pool. We all know what birds do. The thing starts squawking around 8 or 9 in the morning & is just annoying! There are a couple other people with dogs. They leave them on the balcony or tied up outside & they bark continuously. No one from management does anything about that & this property manager doesn’t find those things important enough to address. One family had a little boy who sat nude on the restaurant tables & stood at the edge of the pool & peed. It was one of the tenants that pointed out to the parents it was inappropriate. The beach is beautiful but the aggravation & rental rates, for what you get, isn’t worth it. On many of the 2 bedroom units, the prices have risen by $500 a month each of the past 2 years. Believe me, they aren’t worth an extra $1000 a month. Also, verify the pictures & the furniture shown are actually your unit, some of them are not the actual unit you are renting. Ask for an inventory list before you go, many don’t even have a decent frying pan. If you’re staying any length of time, be prepared to buy things, especially for the kitchen.
Another aggravating issue is the party boats. There are around 5 or 6 parked off the beach here. They run tours everyday, at least 3 times a day. The music is very loud & can be heard all the way into the complex. Sometimes it’s so bad, people have to leave the beach because they can’t stand it.
There are a couple small grocery stores within walking distance & you can take the public bus to the larger market. There are also quite a few restaurants within walking distance. Taxis are expensive but the bus is only 30 pesos.

If you’re looking for something different than an all inclusive, this is fine for the short term. I definitely don’t recommend it long term. And remember, it’s not so cheap for short term, especially if you add in food, which is not inexpensive here, water & in some cases, electric. If you’re charged for electric make sure you take a reading when you arrive & before you leave. Ask to see an electric bill that tells you the exact rate.
One other thing, the old management company took away all the restaurant equipment, tables, chairs, etc. So as of now, there is no restaurant on the property.

Room Tip: Higher condos have a better view of the water, but there is no elevator. The units in the K buildi...

Stayed recently in one-bedroom condo in Stanza Mare. Unit was large and very well kept. There is security and shops and restaurants nearby. Breakfast was included and lunch and dinner is also available at the complex restaurant. Fod was good.

Excellent location on the beauatiful Bavaro Beach. Quiet property. Ideal if you want to get a feel for the real Dominican Republic and not just be trapped in an all inclusive. I had friends who could come to visit me which was nice. There is a grocery store nearby to buy supplies.

I would recommend and go back to this property. Make sure when you reserve your unit it has air conditioning.. Apparently some do not which would not be ideal in this tropical climate.

Reception staff were very helpful with information.

I booked my unit on Expedia and all worked well.

Room Tip: Make sure it has air conditioning.

We stayed here for 5 nights in October and we had an awesome time. If you are looking for something more authentic and not a big, all-inclusive resort this is the place for you! When we go away we like to really experience the location we are at by trying local bakeries, restaurants, shops, bars, etc. You don't get to experience these things at a big resort since you normally don't really need to leave the grounds, which sometimes is nice, but in all honestly that resort can be on any nice beach anywhere and you would never know the difference. Which is why we like to rent houses or condos when we go away. You really get to experience the area and meet the locals. With that said, if you are looking for the hotel experience of maids, concierge, people waiting on you hand and foot, this is probably not for you. But if you want to relax, enjoy the local food, and not be around 1,000 people this is the way to go.

So as for the condo it was great! It was decorated beautifully and had everything we could've needed. The furnishing were clean and very stylish and decorated perfectly for the beach. The condo had all the amenities we needed- dishes, cups, wine glasses, pots, pans, towels, sheets, etc. The grounds of Stanza Mare are great. We loved the pool and never had a problem getting chairs. Many times in the morning it would just be us on the beach or in the pool which was amazing. I hate crowds, especially at the pool or the beach so for me this was heaven!

We felt totally safe here as well. In the morning we would walk down the street to the local bakery and get croissants and muffins or stop at the store to pick up a few things. At night we would walk to dinner at D'Angelos (awesome Italian) or Hurricane's (sooo good), or even further down the beach Jelly Fish. And we did this in the pitch dark and never were bothered or felt unsafe at all. Most of the time we would pass other people doing the same thing as us.

During the day on the beach the only thing that got a little annoying was people trying to sell you things but personally I can't blame them and we would just tell them we lived here and they'd go away and for the most part not bother us after that. The beach by the way is amazing! The sand is so white and soft and the water is this amazing shade of teal. It is by far one of my favorites beaches I've ever been to and we are beach people and have been to a lot.

We did twoexcursions wtih Linda and Vincente. They live at Stanza Mare and have amazing prices on different excursions. Whats nice is that its not a big group tour so you really get to talk to them and ask questions and experience it all with just the people in your group. We did a snorkel tour which was great! After snorkeling they took us to this little spot where they cut down coconuts for us and we got to drink fresh coconut milk. The other tour we did was tot he natural cave and Micao (sp?) beach. This was awesome! At Micao beach we got to try some local treats and swim and see all the amazing sites. From there we went to this cave where you can jump into the fresh water pool inside of it. The water was so clean and clear and still that I had a hard time seeing it until we jumped in. On the drive to and from the cave Vincente and Linda told us all about the things we were seeing and gave us a good history lesson. We definitely recommend using them for any exursions you want to do!

Overall we had an amazing time and would definitely recommend Stanza Mare as a great place to stay with your family and/or friends. Or even as a romantic getaway! But please be sure to do your research on the condo that you rent. Im sure the majority of the condos are awesome but since it is not a hotel it is up to you to figure out who you are renting from and what you are getting. We booked ours through homeaway.com and looked at all of the pcitures and read the reviews of the condo we picked and talked to the owner about what the condo had in terms of furnishing, dishes, towels, etc. Our condo also had a manager who lived on site so that made us feel better since we knew that if anyhting did go wrong or was broken etc we were able to call him and have it taken care of right away. We did our homework and ended up at an amazing condo for a great price!

If you have any questions, feel free to message me!

Thanks!
Gina and Mike

We rented a one bedroom unit in Stanza Mare for a month - from mid February to mid March. We loved it! The unit was nicer than we expected it to be, and when we saw the ocean view from the balcony we were thrilled. The on line pictures showed everything that we got, but it was much nicer in person! The condo was managed by Linda and Vicente Rivera, and they were great. They were very helpful and friendly. Our condo was well stocked with lots of towels. We told the property managers that we would be having guests visit for a week at a time and extra sheets and fold up mattresses were in the unit before we even got there. We were very pleased.

The newly opened restaurant was great. Alexis, Flanagan and all the staff there were awesome. They tried very hard to please their customers and we think they did a great job.

The beach and pool were both nice. Carlos the security guard at the beach, was great. He would see us coming and go and get some chairs for us. There were a few days however, when we couldn't get a chair around the pool or at the beach. I guess those were the days when the complex was very busy.

The grounds are very well kept. The grounds keepers work hard all day to keep the place looking nice and they do a good job.

The location of the complex is perfect. We walked to the grocery store everyday. It was just around the corner. They sold wine and beer at the grocery store as well. There were several restaurants within walking distance too. We tried a few, but we preferred to cook our own meals.

We loved Stanza Mare and we will be going back again next year. We can hardly wait!
