My wife and I travelled for the first time to the Bavaro Princess Resort in the week of July 14 - July 21, this was not our first time in Punta Cana. I will give you a full run down of our vacation from airport departure too when we come back home. We are seasoned travellers and travel twice a year to all inclusive resorts. Our basis for travelling to the Bavaro Princess resort in the DR was that last year we travelled to their sister resort in the Mayan Rivieria and were kind of expecting the same level of service in what we received their. We were wrong in that decision. When we first were booking we were looking at Platinum Suite which is the best room and package you can receive at the Princess resorts, the resort boasts itself as the best out there, that it feels it can charge you around $400 a person more than the Suite or Jr Suite. My wife and I last year paid for Platinum package and it was knowwhere near as expensive as the package in the DR, so we opted out of it, as you are not getting anything more exclusive than anyone else who pays for just a Suite room. So here is the rundown
Departure - We travelled out of Toronto on Sunwing Airlines, this is who the vacation was purchased with. this was the second time we used them and frankly it will be the last time, we paid $40 a person extra for extra weight in our luggage and to supposedly sit in wider and bigge seats at the fron of their planes. This is not the case with Sunwing, as they do not own none of their planes and they are leased to them from other airlines and agencies and the planes are old not new, the level of service provided by the flight attendants was sub par to say the least. We chose the based on travel time was the best with them than any other carrier going into the DR. We departed on time at 6am and arrived in the DR around 11 am which was perfert, we didnt lose a day travelling and felt we had the rest of the day to relax and enjoy our selves
Arrival - Like I said before we arrived at the airport around 11am and we were in and out of the airport in less than an hour, which is great. The trip on the bus was long as we were only 25 mins away from the resort, but had other ppl on our bus from 3 different resorts that got off before us, this making it the ride about an hour. So we finally get to the resort, this is where it fell apart for us, we were supposed to have received a welcome drink and a refreshing towel upon our arrival, this never happened. So I didnt let this bother me, as the sooner we checked in the faster we could go to the beach. Well since we arrived to the hotel 3 hours early than the check in time, they did not have our room ready, so we went off to the bar and started to drink, as we didn't want to lug our hand bags around the resort. We came back at 3pm and our room was still not ready, so I returned back at 3:30pm and the same thing, not ready. At this point I was starting to get aggitated with them, so I was pulled aside from other guests we came there with and shown a map of the resort and the gentleman circled our current room was to have been in building 43 which is in the middle of the resort, he then circled building 73 which was a different colour on the map and said we have been upgraded to Platinum for the inconvenience they have caused us. Well that made our day and we went off with our luggage and on the trolley to our new room. Our room was steps from the beach, pool area and 4 of the resorts restaurants.
Resort - The resort itself is large in size and it takes about 20 mins to walk from the front of the resort to the beach. The trolley comes in handy when you don't feel like walking that much, but after a large meal it's a great way to digest your meal. One of the low points I found was that some of the ammenities of this resort are lack luster when compared to the real 5 star resorts in Punta Cana, one of the big ones was that there is no wi-fi in this resort. You must go all the way to the front of the resort and take a golf cart at night to the casino at the entrance to the Bavaro Princess in order to get free wi-fi inside of the casino in their make shift lounge area. What I think is the scam on the resort's part, the only place you can get free wifi is in the casino, so since you are there you are tempted to gamble in the casino, another way Princess tries to squeeze more money out of you. Like I said before Platinum is not worth it at this resort, they do have a seperate lounge area for Platinum guests, but you don't anything different there than you would at the other bars and lounges. They have 2 computers there to use. No seperate pool area for Platinum guest's like in the Mayan. They do have a seperate areaa roped off on the beach for Platinum guests with comfy chairs and cabanas, during our stay it was always empty and knowone was there monitoring it either to ensure only Platiunum paying guests were using them. So anyone can really go in there and make use of those comfy chairs. You don't have to play the chair saving game as there are so many there to choose from at all times, I would go around 9am before breakfast and there would be so many loungers to choose from with palapas covering them. They do have an excellent eco path yo can walk through, that has so many birds and parrots in there to look at. Lot's of different animals to see as well loads of peacocks roam the resort at all times. i did one daay go for a walk on the beach and if you to the right you can walk past the Grand Palladium and next to this resort is a shopping village, be careful they will harrass you to come in to their stores, and not a place for a female to go alone into. They grabbed me by the arm a couple times and I had to fight them of me, who knows if the stuff is real or not hey are trying to sell but I sure didn't stick around to find out. And if you go to the left of the resort you can walk past the Paradisius resort and then the 3 othr Princess resorts are next after this resort.
Room - The upgraded room we received was excellent and spacious as well. It was a newly renovated Platinum room that we got, with a seperate shower and washroom area, seperate sink and mirror area, and a couch and table with chairs in the front of the room. The king size bed was elevated in the middle of the room with a whirlpool tub to the right side of the bed. we had and lcd flat screen tv and satellite channels with over 80 different channels to choose from. Also had a dvd player as well if you wanted to go into the platinum lounge area and take out dvd movies to watch. But you are on holidays and the last thing you want is to spend time in your room watchiing tv where you have so much to on the resort itself. It only rained twice on our trip, once in the morning and once at night. A word of caution, all the rooms have access only from the outside, you are in bungalows in that area of the resort and must be careful not to lock yourself out, I did once and thankfully the platinum lounge was behind us that it was a short walk over there for someone there to give us a new key for our room.
Food - I was expecting alot better than what we received. You think that you are in the Carribean, there would be bountiful of fish to eat at this resort, well guess again, there wasn't. They have a fish restaurant called the Pescador, it was not bad. I had the marlin steaks, and they they were excellent. My wife had the paella, it was knowhere near anything like it. They have a steak restaurant which wwas not bad, an italian restaurant, a Tanuki restaurant and another Japanese restaurant called Sakura, but it was closed during our stay. I was told they closed it and are in the midst of changing it to something else. For breakfast your best and only bet was the buffet at the front of the resort, there is a buffet by thee pool but it was not always open for breakfast buut always open for lunch buffet and dinner for Gaucho the steeak restaurant. They did have section roped off for Platinum guests and to be honest knowone ever sat in there. It's such a waste of space. There is a spot on the the beach called McPrincess where this poor only guy who works in there serves up some sub par burgers and deep fried hot dogs. Who deep fries a hotdog when you have a flat top grill to cook them on??? Anyways the meat is not the best quality, so I just got a plate fries if I went there.
Departure - The day of departure was good, we didn't leave the resort till 7pm as our flight was not until 9:45pm that night, thhus why we chose Sunwing cause of the greater amount of time we got to spend in the DR. The bus ewas overboooked for some reason, so we got on a private coach and drove straight to the airport to leave to come home to Canada. The airport itself is not bad at all, lot's of duty free and free wifi in the terminal.
