“Very relaxing holiday”

We are converts to the Dominican Republic and Riu Palace Macao in particular. We had a lovely room on the third floor which had views of the sea and was very quiet. Being an adults only hotel suited us perfectly and everyone was friendly. The food is superb, always lots of choice and beautifully presented. The beach is fine sand and very long. We walked for over an hour everyday and could have gone further if we had wanted to. We would love to return.

Not much for writing reviews. However, I was compelled to write this one following some past reviews, and our own personal experience on out recent stay at a Riu. We booked this vacation in early September via an online travel company, we were looking forward to spending our vacation at the Hotel Riu Palace Macao based on mostly positive reviews and as it is one of the only “adult only” properties in the Dominican.
Prior to our trip we began to get a bit concerned about reviews that were beginning to appear on Trip Advisor regarding couples getting bumped to other Riu properties. Our flights and connections went smoothly and we arrived in Punta Cana on time. The private airport transportation we booked was as described and we were at the resort within a half hour drive. We arrived at the Macao and the bellmen were there to greet us and were very polite, we were instructed to proceed to the check-in area and were politely greeted. We showed them our confirmation documents and this is when things began to deteriorate quickly. The desk clerk began to converse with Jose the desk manager and he immediately came over to us and congratulated us as we were going to be upgraded. My wife and I both looked at each other in disbelieve and laughed as we knew where this conversation was leading. Jose informed us that we are going to “upgraded” to the all suite Riu Palace Punta Cana, we explained to Jose that this was unacceptable as we specifically booked the Macao due it being adults only and we were not interested in the “upgrade”. We politely explained to him that we were not interested in have young children interrupting our relaxation. Our first impression began to sour even more when Jose told us that the Riu Punta Cana is also “adult only” and that there are never any kids there as the youngest allowed there “had” to be over 16 years old. We knew better as we did our homework and knew that this was not the case. Jose then informed us that the Riu Palace Punta Cana was expecting us and that we would have a beautiful ocean view room waiting; we were then transported to the Riu Punta Cana.
We arrived at the Riu Punta Cana to check in and guess what, they had no idea we were coming! This was obviously uncomfortable for the front desk employees, however, they handled it well and supplied us with our wrist bands and politely said “we were on vacation and please go to the bar and relax while they straighten this out. About a half hour later we went back to the desk and were assigned our room. Well………. The bellman takes us to our room and, you got it, it’s not even close to the ocean but my wife and I at this point were tired and wanted to just unwind.
We quickly emptied our luggage and headed down to grab a drink. We found a seat and before we were even served a drink a very young boy and his family happened to sit down behind us and the adults began to drink and be merry while the young boy was standing directly behind my wife throwing his ball cap up in the air and catching it until he threw it up in the air until it landed on my wife’s head. We excused ourselves and laughed and we both agreed to relax and keep an open mind.
As far as the rest of the vacation went………. The room was sufficient even though it wasn’t the oceanfront we were promised. The property was well kept and clean. Breakfast and lunch is served at the buffet and the food was what we expected, there was a variety and different choices every day. The staff at the buffet was friendly and provided very good service. If we were to rate, Krystal was by far the best a la carte restaurant on the property, the service was very good and the staff was very friendly. The Italian, steakhouse and Japanese food was what was expected. However, the staff was less than friendly. I would like to add (based on other reviews) that we are VERY particular about our wine and felt that the red wine served at the a la carte restaurants was what we would expect at an all inclusive. It was truly not bad and enjoyable with dinner. There was never an issue getting lounge chairs for us either at the pool or on the beach as we generally were there by 8am. After 9am most of the better areas were taken and it looked like it was difficult getting two chairs together. YES, on most of the days were effected one way or another by very young children at the pool and figured that we could perhaps escape this at the beach but unfortunately we were not. The service at the pool was stellar and the drinks were strong and frequent, we generally tipped the wait staff a few dollars throughout the day as they were very polite and worked very hard.
We had the opportunity to meet many couples throughout the week and were surprised with the amount that we met that had the similar bait, switch, upgrade story. We felt bad for one group that actually was 6 couples and they were all moved to separate Riu properties. So groups traveling together looking for the “adults only” experience beware!!!!!!
As described in prior reviews, if you are looking for some night life following a 9pm dinner, it is non -existent! The entertainment ends promptly at 11pm and the entire resort basically goes to sleep.
We made the best of the cards we were given, however, when we return to the Dominican or any other vacation destination we will be seeking out other resorts as we felt mislead. We would only recommend the Riu chain in the Dominican if you are accepting of an “upgrade”.

This was our first stay at a Riu Palace after having stayed at a few of the club hotels. It really was a lovely hotel. We loved the Coffee Lounge with the patisserie where they whipped up a lovely variety of coffees, teas and lots of little cakes and desserts.

The a la carte restaurants were amazing, we only went to the Steak House and the Crystal Fusion but they were so good we went twice and as they were both on the beach they provided such a romantic atmosphere especially as the Macao is for adults only.

The main bar was classy with nice live music every night and the all inclusive even included champagne or something similar. The only thing was that all the waitresses at the bar were all hired to be attractive and wear very short skirts...alright for some...

The service was excellent, before you even picked up a menu someone would be there to take your order, pull out your chair...etc
All the staff were friendly and always smiled and said hello.

The place was very clean and newly refurbished. The double shower head in our room wasn't working so we used the standard shower but I'm sure if we'd reported it someone would have fixed it straight away. They even turn your sheets down at night.
We enjoyed the entertainment and was even treated to a circus trapeze act.
The beach is a bit choppy but still nice to swim in and the
breeze keeps you cool. We had very good weather.
A really lovely stay would definitely return.

Our first trip to the Dominican republic and our first to a riu, and all in all, very impressed. Clean rooms, staff. polite and friendly as should be expected. Foods was excellent, well prepared, cooked and presented. On a recent visit to Egypt I was really put off by being pestered by "trip sellers" that don't and won't take no for an answer, it seems that the Dominican people have embraced tourism and understand that most tourists do not appreciate being pestered at all and after a polite "No thank you" they left you in peace.
Now for the minor "gripes", and they are very minor, I fancied a bowl of chicken soup, it was a bit darker in colour than I expected, I tasted it and yes it tasted of chicken, but was in my opinion just chicken "gravy" out of a packet, à là Bisto, secondly, the "carts" pushed around by cleaning and catering staff had solid wheels, which seemed to make quite a lot of noise on the tiled floors, again not a major problem but one that could be easily solved by using trolleys with pneumatic tyres....all in all a very enjoyable experience, we are now planning a return in 2014...

This was a fourth visit to DR and fourth resort we were trying out. The resort is a real Palace with a beautiful grounds, well taken care of, groomed and cleaned. Modern style decorations fill all grounds and buildings, bars and restaurants. Very nice. Service excellent all thou it is a bit behind Grand Iberostar, but it also cost less so you get what you pay for. And actually I think you get much more than you pay for. Being a adults only resort, swimming pools are crystal clear and pure pleasure. Lots of Cabanas around it to create shade, cause we all know the weather in DR is always good and for some could be to much at times. There is also plenty shade on the beach thanks to many, many palm trees. There is a place for everyone. Shows at night are as good as in any other resort and since we have seen them on multiple occasions we skipped that part and basing our positive opinion on what other people said. Main restaurant very well set, and huge variety of delicious meets, vegetables, fruits and sweets are served here daily. We were very happy to see that Riu keeps up the promise to satisfy anyone's taste. La Carte Restaurants are rather mediocre and well behind what Iberostar has to offer, but again, we did not expect much cause we did not pay an arm and a leg. Room we've had was a two patio suite and will attach some photos. Very nice. Rooms # 3375-3378 are about same and absolutely awesome. Room service outstanding to say the least. The room mini bar shows a some deficiencies not because i am a big drinker but (again have to mention that Iberostar offers brand name drinks), because of what was there to enjoy. So I did not use it much. Well, the story repeats in the bars around the resort. I am not complaining at all, just reviewing what I have noticed, and may be someone in management would take this as constructive criticism and possibly try to improve. One other think that we would suggest also would be a sidewalk connecting west wing with swimming pool and beach areas. Also the ramp down from west building to Japanese/Main restaurant/Grounds is definitely missing slip preventing strips.
Big "Thank you" to hotel's stuff for their dedication and hard work. They really did a 5 star job. Also we had the pleasure to talk with vice director of the resort. We will not mention name but, she is a pleasure to talk to and spent some time on honest discussions.
Overall rating of ours is 5 stars and once again thank you for your hospitality.

Room Tip: Huge rooms with perfect views #3375-3378

First time in the Dominican but not first time in a Riu. The hotel was lovely, great choice of food even for a fussy eater like me and pool, rooms and staff lovely. The management were very helpful when my husband became ill and let us stay in the room until our pick up to go home and the waiters and waitresses couldn't do enough for us. Although all these things were very nice we won't be returning. We are used to all inclusive with snorkelling, hobie-cats, surfing and horse riding (all included in the price) to keep my husband active during the day rather than just baking in the sun so it does get a bit samey. The clinic in Caribbean street in the Riu complex were dreadful and completely misdiagnosed a serious health condition for my husband and if you need any sort of medication be prepared to pay way over the odds.

Room Tip: If you can try to get an upgrade with sea view on the 3rd floor. You won't be disappointed.
