“Even better the 2nd time around”
Reviewed 27 August 2012

My husband, myself and our 7 yr.-old returned to the Esmeralda in August because we had really enjoyed ourselves last year. We were pleasantly surprised when they recognized and remembered us. It was really nice to see that most of the staff was the same. They made us feel right at home immediately.
Upon our arrival, we were a little disappointed about the location of our room and they sensed it by our reaction. The manager, Ramon Diaz, greeted us personally and promised that by the following day, he would find us a better location. Well, he certainly came through! Building 90, room 90011 which is facing the pool and has a view to the sea from the balcony. We were so pleased. It was fantastic! Throughout our 2-week stay, we were constantly given special attention, smiling faces, joking around and so-on. I think being a return customer made a difference. Not that they didn't treat us well the first time, just that the second time was even better.
As usual, the resort, as well as the rooms, were always immaculate. Our son got an ear infection and required medical attention. No problem. We were personally shuffled to and from the on-site clinic and met with Dr. Luis Cabrera. He was great and our son felt better soon after taking the antibiotic he'd prescribed. Word of advice, have travel insurance! It makes everything so much easier. We have RBC insurance and this is the second time that we've used it. Myself, I hurt my knee on a previous trip and needed to go to the hospital. I got better medical attention there than I do in Quebec. They sent me there by ambulance, I had x-rays, was fitted for a knee brace and administered pain medication. The Bavaro Hospital were super sterile and I was treated very well. I didn't have to pay for anything out of pocket except for the $25.00 (u.s.) taxi ride back to the hotel. I got a receipt and RBC refunded it upon my return. I witnessed other people without appropriate insurance who owed $1200.00 u.s. for similar treatment and they were crying because they didn't have insurance. It costs our family of three $180.00 cdn. for year-round coverage in Canada, U.S. and abroad. It is well worth it. If injured, call RBC, get a case number and give it to the doctor. It's that simple.
Anyhow, all I can say are positive things about the Gran Bahia Principe- Esmeralda. Hotel manager Ramon Diaz was great. Also a shout out to Esteban at the front desk for placing my sister-in-law and her family a few doors down from us when they joined us during our 2nd week. Nicanor, the bell hop, for always being pleasant and helping us out. The restaurant guys, Cristian, Angelis, Francois and the room-cleaning ladies. Please tip these people. They work very hard for so little by our standards. They still treat you wonderfully without the tips but it makes them happy to feel appreciated.

Room Tip: Buildings 90 & 91 are located closest to the pool and beach. Corner suites like ours have a grea...

This was my family's first trip to the Dominican and we were not disappointed. We chose the Esmeralda because it is part of a large complex with numerous activities, pools and restaurants.
The water is clear and beaches very nice. Expect to do some walking though shuttles run frequently.
Dominicans are hard working friendly people. Most speak English as well as other languages, which is important because many guests were not from the USA. We did bring many dollar bills and would leave a couple dollars each day for the maid, favorite waiter and bartender. (never more than $10 per day total)
Food was good for an all-inclusive resort but do not expect 5-star quality. Don Pablo was the best and the Hibachi restaurant OK. Wine and drinks were fine but we're not picky. We drank water at every restaurant with no problems, which is a major plus if you have ever been to Mexico.
Activities were numerous including, sailing, snorkeling, yoga, beach aerobics, etc. We never left the resort except for walks on the beach. There were decent shows every night as well as a small casino and disco. I was disappointed with the tiny gym that had no windows. Beach was worth it though guests often left towels, etc. overnight to reserve huts, which meant we had to get there early.
We looked at multiple other resorts during our walks and agreed that we made the right choice. Overall we were impressed with Esmeralda and would definitely return. I would rate it 4.5 Stars at a 3.5 star price.

This resort was recommended to us by our travel agent and honesty Dominican Republic was not our destination of choice before we left. Over all, it was a good experience (3 1/2 stars)but we feel it does not cater to families.

We arrived at the Gran Bahia Bavaro and honestly were left to fend for ourselves. I managed to secure my very own porter (with an offering of $5) to drive us the the esmerelda resort. Good investment, saved us time. Check in was a disaster. My 2-16 year old kids did not get bracelets. Come back next day. Someone should let the reception people know that vacationers do not want to spend thier vacations at the front desk. It was clearly stated in our reservation that there were 2 teenagers travelling with us. In the other all inclusive resorts we have been to, these bracelets are attached to the file and issued upon arrival.

We asked for adjoining rooms, (oops rooms 92001 and 92003 are not ajoining), We asked for a room with 2 double beds (both 92001 ad 92003 have king beds)and there were no double bed rooms available till Thursday (5 days later). WE EVEN PHONED THE RESORT THE NIGHT BEFORE.Come back on Thursday to get the room change (oops another planned meeting with reception).. I normaly dont like to single out poor employess but the Esmerelda would do themselves a favour, by reassigining Deuris to beach clean up, or grounds crew where he does not have to deal with the public.

PLEASE READ THIS

This is very important for North Americans (and Europeans) traveling the Punta Cana in the summer. In South America it is winter in July and August so many South American spanish families flock to the Dominican. At the Gran Bahia approximately 80% of the rooms have King sized Beds leaving only 20% (of the twin bed rooms) to vistors. With the influx of the Spanish families we are left to complain and get frustrated over the lack of proper accomodations. I am hoping that the new buildng being constructed will address the issue, if not the Esmerelda will continue to fail as a family resort and bad reiews will soon follow.

The Esmeralda portion of the Gran Bahia complex has 5 - 3 story buildings with its own pool, buffet and one a la carte restaurant. It is very well located and close a well maintained beach.

The nightly entertainment (on the main resort) which is always crowded and bring the DEET. Most of the shows are very amateurish, but a must see is the Circus show.

Don't Shop at the Pueblo Principe very expensive. I would recommend walking 45 minutes along the beach (Going to the right when facing the ocean) They have everything you would want including cigars, alcohol and bracelets at a much cheaper price than at the resort (and duty free). I asked the bar tenders the name of the best rum and how much I should pay before we bargained with the sellers..

Food - the buffet was good. Eating is a very personal element to any vacation. Don't expect the choice beef cuts that you get at home in a 4 fork restaurant but with these all inclusives you should find something you enjoy. We did not get sick, and stuck to chicken and fish. We did not over abuse on the alcoholic drinks, stuck to cooked foods ad drank only bottled water.

Overall this resort is good for couples (mind you the Ambar would be better) For families however we wil not return.

Our family of two adults and two kids spent a week in July at the Esmeralda resort in Punta Cana. Here is our experience.

The drive from the airport to the resort is only about half an hour but there is a lot of waiting for guests and luggage to get loaded and unloaded, so it took close to an hour before we actually got off the bus at the main Bahia Principe lobby. There are literally hundreds of guests arriving and departing this lobby daily. Everyone’s luggage is unloaded together and you need to follow yours to make sure it goes with you to the Esmeralda part of the complex. You also need to ask someone where to find the ‘tram’ to the Esmeralda as the staff there doesn’t offer information without being asked, and many groups of people were standing around wondering where to go and what to do next.

Once at the Esmeralda, our check-in was fairly quick and we were introduced to our very pleasant personal butler. Unfortunately, we did not see her for the remainder of the week. Our travel agent requested a room on the upper floor facing the pool which we did get, however, arriving at the room we discovered that it had only one bed. As there were four of us, this was a surprise. We returned to the front desk and politely said that we thought we were given the wrong room. They said that “some people who have small children have them sleep in a crib”, but our reservation clearly stated that our children were 8 and 11 years old. My son is almost as tall as my wife so the staff’s comments about a crib were ridiculous. We were told nothing could be done that night but to return the next morning at 10:00 and that it was our travel agent’s fault for not requesting two beds. We resigned ourselves to the fact that we would sleep three to a bed and our older son would sleep on the love-seat, which by the way is not a pull out but a cushion on a wooden bench. We then went to the Jazmin buffet to get something to eat. We noticed that some of the food items were dried out and on the cool side but it was later in the evening so they must have been sitting there for a while. While we were eating, we were given a couple of restaurant surveys to complete. Towards the end of the meal my wife filled one in and rated everything excellent except for the food quality, which she rated as “good”. At this time, our waiter came over to the table and took a look at the survey. He began to say “NO, NO, NO” upon seeing that the one area was not rated as “excellent”. Surprised, we didn’t know how to react. We tried to explain about the food being a bit cold, but not speaking English, he did not understand what we were saying. He kept repeating “No, No”. Finally he took my wife’s hand, put the pen in it, and made her cross out the “good” rating and changed it to “excellent”! We were so shocked and taken back that we thought this had to be a joke. He left and we decided to fill in the other copy of the form the same way as we had the first time. When he came back to the table, he again checked the survey and this time changed it himself to all “excellent”! This was incredibly shocking, inappropriate and unprofessional! Maybe we were exhausted from traveling all day, maybe frustrated with our single bed situation, or the heavy rain that greeted us at the resort, or maybe it was our passive Canadian background, but we just chose to go back to our room for a rest and not to start complaining about this employee who obviously deserved it.

The next day we wanted to go to the orientation but spent close to an hour looking for it and asking various employees where it was. Apparently it depends on which language you speak and which travel company you booked your trip through. It was a frustrating experience as the orientation does not happen at the Esmeralda, and the rest of the resort is enormous with many lobbies and gathering places. We noticed that a few other visitors had the same problem finding orientation. Once we got there we found the information very useful, especially about the excursions. We then returned to the front desk of the Esmerelda to see if they had done something about our room situation. We were told the resort was full and that nothing could be done. After emphasizing that the four of us could not stay for a week in a room with one bed and becoming increasingly frustrated, we were told we could have a room with two beds in a different building, on the bottom floor, facing the tram line – completely the opposite of what our travel agent requested when we booked well in advance. The front desk clerk was visibly annoyed and bordered on rude. However, we weren’t going to complain at this point, as being able to sleep comfortably took priority.

After this, things took a turn for the positive and we finally started to enjoy our vacation. The beach was lovely. The water is not crystal clear and calm if that is what you are looking for. Due to the constant wind, there are waves which make the water murky and full of seaweed. We loved the pool – it is very large and the water was really warm, but it is clean and relaxing. It had many sections and our kids loved it. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful. The grounds are immaculate and extremely well kept. The room was wonderful and the bathroom very clean. We had no problem with fresh towels, water temperature, etc. One thing that we were frustrated with was that the mini bar was hit-and-miss. First it only contained pop and two beers. On the third day, after we used a Spanish dictionary and wrote a note for housekeeping, we did get a properly stocked bar. We wrote a note the next day too and were happy with what was left. As soon as we didn’t write a note, some things were once again missing. Our room was always cleaned between 3:00 and 5:00 pm.

We chose to go on two excursions that were both wonderful. We went to Dolphin Explorer and had a great time. It was a bit pricey, but our kids loved it! We also went on the Caribbean Festival which included a catamaran sail out to Stingray Bay. We swam with nurse sharks, interacted with sting rays and then went snorkeling at a coral reef. We actually enjoyed the Caribbean Festival a little more than the dolphins.

With regards to food, it was average. It was definitely not as good as we have had at other resorts in the Caribbean. After two or three days the buffet became boring. Be aware that we found, on more than one occasion, that the food was under-cooked. Our kids loved the mini burgers but twice we found them to be completely raw in the middle (not pink – but red). I showed this to two waiters and suggested that they tell the chef, but they just nodded their heads, did nothing about it, and just carried on with their usual tasks. Check your food carefully – the last thing you want is to get really sick there! We went to the Italian a la carte and while the food was good, it was not truly a la carte. You still need to do the buffet for appetizers and dessert. Also, there was supposed to be a dress code in effect but some people were dressed in jean shorts, tank tops and ball caps! We also went to the Japanese restaurant at the main resort and it was good, but again the dress code was not enforced.

One thing to be aware of is that the staff certainly wants you to tip them. Case in point – we were walking through the resort and passed two grounds keepers. They gestured to our kids to come over and see coconuts that had fallen off a tree. They cut one open so that the kids could try the milk. We thought this was nice until we started to walk away and they called me back, rubbing their fingers together, saying “tip, tip”. It seemed like tips were expected everywhere we went.

We decided to try out the kid’s mini club one morning as we saw that mini golf was on the schedule and our kids had seen the course and wanted to try it. When we picked them up it turned out that they didn’t take the kids to the miniature golf course, but instead they rolled out a small carpet with one hole on the porch of the club. Our kids told us stories about the operators “winning” the games, laughing at the kids trying to make the putts and declaring themselves as the winners! Our kids asked us to not take them there again and we didn’t.

Leaving the resort was in a word – CHAOS! There were hundreds of people and hundreds of pieces of luggage trying to leave from the same main lobby for the airport. No one knew which bus they should be on, and everyone was confused. We witnessed one older woman rightly getting upset with the bell boys that were supposed to be organizing things and loading luggage on the bus and they did nothing, and then made fun of her after she left. It was a very stressful end to our holiday.

Overall the resort is beautiful and only two things took away from our enjoyment: (1) the resort is simply too big and (2) the language barrier (or perhaps the staff) makes it difficult to get any help. We had worked with our kids to teach them some Spanish but I am believe that we left speaking more Spanish then the people in the restaurants spoke English. I’m also convinced that if you speak Spanish then you will avoid a lot of the communication issues and therefore have a much better time there. The resort looks perfect on the surface, and as long as you go with the flow and accept things as they are then you will be fine. But if you have a concern about something (like cold or raw food, or getting the wrong room) then the staff seems to be out of their comfort zone and you are left feeling like you are being a difficult quest. We do not plan on returning to this resort.

We are a group of four adults and two children--grandma and grandpa (60's) and grandchildren 9 and 8 years with their parents (30 somethings)...we love all inclusives and have travelled a lot as a family and the concensus was that this scored at least a 9 out of 10!

Just make sure you stay in the ESMERALDA section of this huge property.

Rooms are big and clean.

Restaurants are awesome and food is definitely 5 star...a great way to teach the kids the "art" of fine dining in the a la cartes. You will get to know the staff--they are all very friendly and have a great sense of humour..

The "private" pool was perfect because we did not have to participate in the "crazy big pool" activities with the drinking and "mr sexy" contests on the other side of the resort...but if you want to "play" you are welcome to use that part of the resort as well.

The beach is excellent for all ages and the special section with a bar just for esmerelda guests is great and no long line-ups.

The circus show in the theatre was fantastic--the gymnastics and acrobatics are very impressive.

We would recommend this section of the resort because it is great for families and still allows you to enjoy the rest of the restaurants and facilities in the whole property (except the adult only section).

Go and enjoy!

Room Tip: Building 90 is closest to the ocean. The ground level rooms can be noisy since there is a lot of tr...

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Esmeralda the week of August 12th (our 2nd stay) and will definately not be our last. Check-in was quick and smooth. The resort is beautiful and very well maintained; the rooms are spacious and cleaned everyday. There is on-going construction, however, we didn't hear any activity during our stay. The beach is beautiful and we never had a problem obtaining beach chairs under a palapa. The employees at the resort were most helpful and are all so sweet, always walking around with a simile and saying hola! We found the food to be very good, we tried the Japanese at Maiko, Bella Italia and Lobster night at Jasmine and all were outstanding. I'd like to give a shout out to Ramon, who was always there to help with a smile; Manolo, (hope I spelled it correctly) at the pool bar - lots of fun; Karen, at the Punta Cana lobby - always there to assist with a smile; and Mabel, in Customer Service of the Esmeralda, all outstanding employees. Looking forward to our next trip in November; we just can't stay away! Thank you all for an enjoyable vacation.

This was my family's first vacation in Punta Cana and it will certainly not be our last.

On the recommendation of my sister who had visited this beautiful island with her family in the past, my family decided that we would join them this year at the lovely Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda. This resort did not disappoint. It was everything we expected and more.

Our two families consisted of 4 adults & 3 teenagers and this resort was very family oriented so if you are planning a romantic vacation, you should take into consideration that there may be lots of kids around and the Ambar (Adult only) may be a better choice. This was certainly not a problem for our family.

We stayed in building 91, Room 91209 facing the Punta Cana Resort. If you are concerned about the construction going on, this is the building for your. No noise.

The pool was very warm this time of the year but the pool bar service was exceptional. Hats off to Alexis who kept us in cool refreshments the entire week and always with a warm smile.

The buffet was amazing with food to appeal to the most pickiest and adventureous eaters. Again, the service from all the staff, especially our dear island friend, Julio (sp), was over and above. Your family from Newfoundland, Canada, misses you already! It's worth mentioning that if you are not a morning person (need your coffee or tea), it's probably best to help yourself to the self serve tea/coffee station that is at the entrance of the buffet. The staff are more than willing to get this for you but due to the large crowds at breakfast, it may not be served as quickly as you might expect. We figured this out the second day which was really not an issue for us.

The rooms at the resort were immaculate. Our room consisted of two double canopy beds with a sitting area and a flat screen tv which surprizingly had many English speaking channels. This was great for our teenage daughter who looked forward to some down time every day. The housekeeping service was very efficient and the rooms were cleaned and decorated very tastefully with ballons and towel art that appeared to get more extravagant as the week progressed. A special thank you to our housekeeper, Marcelina Drullard, who definitely went out of her way to make our stay a memorable one. Hugs to you :)

There are no words that would justify just how beautiful the beach is. And a special mention to the Water Sport (surf shop) bar staff who were always very upbeat and eager to please.

Last but not least, this resort is much quieter than the Punta Cana resort which is due to the high volume of people. If you want a quiet vacation, this is definitely the resort for you. If you decide, it's too quiet, the option to visit the hopping Punta Cana lobby is great.

What else can we say .... nothing. Our vacation was perfect.
