My husband, myself and our 7 yr.-old returned to the Esmeralda in August because we had really enjoyed ourselves last year. We were pleasantly surprised when they recognized and remembered us. It was really nice to see that most of the staff was the same. They made us feel right at home immediately.
Upon our arrival, we were a little disappointed about the location of our room and they sensed it by our reaction. The manager, Ramon Diaz, greeted us personally and promised that by the following day, he would find us a better location. Well, he certainly came through! Building 90, room 90011 which is facing the pool and has a view to the sea from the balcony. We were so pleased. It was fantastic! Throughout our 2-week stay, we were constantly given special attention, smiling faces, joking around and so-on. I think being a return customer made a difference. Not that they didn't treat us well the first time, just that the second time was even better.
As usual, the resort, as well as the rooms, were always immaculate. Our son got an ear infection and required medical attention. No problem. We were personally shuffled to and from the on-site clinic and met with Dr. Luis Cabrera. He was great and our son felt better soon after taking the antibiotic he'd prescribed. Word of advice, have travel insurance! It makes everything so much easier. We have RBC insurance and this is the second time that we've used it. Myself, I hurt my knee on a previous trip and needed to go to the hospital. I got better medical attention there than I do in Quebec. They sent me there by ambulance, I had x-rays, was fitted for a knee brace and administered pain medication. The Bavaro Hospital were super sterile and I was treated very well. I didn't have to pay for anything out of pocket except for the $25.00 (u.s.) taxi ride back to the hotel. I got a receipt and RBC refunded it upon my return. I witnessed other people without appropriate insurance who owed $1200.00 u.s. for similar treatment and they were crying because they didn't have insurance. It costs our family of three $180.00 cdn. for year-round coverage in Canada, U.S. and abroad. It is well worth it. If injured, call RBC, get a case number and give it to the doctor. It's that simple.
Anyhow, all I can say are positive things about the Gran Bahia Principe- Esmeralda. Hotel manager Ramon Diaz was great. Also a shout out to Esteban at the front desk for placing my sister-in-law and her family a few doors down from us when they joined us during our 2nd week. Nicanor, the bell hop, for always being pleasant and helping us out. The restaurant guys, Cristian, Angelis, Francois and the room-cleaning ladies. Please tip these people. They work very hard for so little by our standards. They still treat you wonderfully without the tips but it makes them happy to feel appreciated.
