Reviewed 16 December 2013

We spent two weeks in the ressort and we really enjoyed our stay.

Hotel:The hotel is rather small for an all-inclusive ressort, which we thought was nice. You can use all the premises at the Now ressort next door, although we almost never did. The Now is much bigger and the atmosphere is really different there. Guests who booked at Now are not allowed to enter the Secrets area, therefore a member of staff will ask you for your room key when crossing from the Now area to the Secrets area.

Rooms: Rooms are very spacious, room service was very good. We asked for additional bottles of water from time to time and always got them. Rooms were clean and the jaccuzzi worked fine.

Beach/Pool: Yes, depending on the weather conditions, there is a bit of sea grass in the ocean from time to time, but not much. It really shouldn't keep you from swimming in the sea. After all, it's the ocean, so there is probably nothing anyone at the hotel can do against the sea grass. Considering the rest of the beach, the gardeners kept that area very clean. We never had problems finding a sunbed (although many tourists do reserve their favourite sunbeds at around 8 am). The pool is also really nice (no sea grass there) and was cleaned regularly throughout the day.

Food: We tried different restaurants at the Secrets side as well as the Japanese and French restaurants at the Now ressort and they all met our expectations. Waiters were very friendly, always making sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our evening. We had no problems with the food at all, never got sick or felt ill. Staff at the bar was also really friendly. I have read reviewers complaining about the waiters' English skills. It is true that particularly some of the younger waiters spoke little English. However, I think you cannot expect everyone in a Spanish speaking country to be fluent in English, especially not if they are still young and/or still training for their job. In the end, the language was never a problem. All the waiters we met during our stay managed to communicate with us, they memorised new words they didn't know and in the end we always got what we had ordered. The service at all the restaurants and bars was really friendly, much better than in most other hotels we stayed in before.

Entertainment: The entertainment team is really an asset for the hotel. Many thanks to José Luis, Eddie Murphy, Akon, Milky Way, Karen and Jackson, who always did everything they could to ensure that we had a good time! They were all really friendly, always keeping in touch with the guests and they have a nice way of inviting you to join in activities. Unlike in other hotels, in this ressort they invite you to join, but they never force you. Obviously, some of the activities such as beach fitness or Salsa classes are accompanied by music, but the music is not loud. You will always find a quiet spot if you do not want to hear the music.

Considering the price you pay and the value you get for it in this hotel, we would definitely recommend the hotel.

Just come back from two weeks in the DR. Let them know before we went that it was our anniversary and we were met by a door banner which was a nice touch.

Check in was very quick and efficient. We left to find our rooms but got a bit lost! A member of staff quickly showed us to our rooms and demonstrated how everything works.

Hotel was clean and modern. Rooms were spacious with a huge bed (very comfortable). There was a walk in shower which was great but the bathroom floor could become slippy when wet.

We mainly stayed by the pool where we were excellently looked after by Solano. He quickly learnt our names and drinks. Carlos in the pool bar was also very good.

The entertainment team were awesome and you could either take part or not. Much love to Milky Way and Akon.

Food was very good on the Secrets side but poor on Now Latimar. The Italian (Capers) was also good. The Sushi (Gohan) was amazing - Ishmael really looked after us. The fillet steak in the Seaside Grill was fantastic!

The evening shows were OK - I've seen better. The Circus, Magic and True Love shows were very good. The club is OK but often very quiet with a roof top pool (but we never saw anyone in it).The sports bar is good but that should get proper slate pool tables. The staff at the Rendezvous Bar - Fernando and Carlos were also excellent with many tricks and fun.

Room service was also very good

Met great people and had an excellent time

If I had to sum our experience at Secrets Royal resort in Punta Cana in one word it would be EXCELLENTE! From the moment we arrived to the time we departed the staff service and attention to detail was impeccable. Upon arrival we were greeted with cool scented towels and glasses of champagne which was very welcomed after the trip. The reception staff made the check in process quick and effortless, within minutes we were checked in and one step closer to the beach. After the fast check in we were escorted to our room in the preferred section of the resort (recommend this upgrade it is well worth the extra charge). Upon arrival to our room we were very pleased with the size, layout, cleanliness and amenities. The room included everything you needed and anything you may have forgotten to pack. The mini bar was fully stocked with a good variety of soda, juice, beer , even chocolate and yes the local rum was there also. After marveling at the room we were ready to check out the resort and the beach. We continued to be impressed, the grounds were amazing and the beach was breathtaking. A wide variety of food options, entertainment choices and spa serenity made this our best vacation to date. As mentioned all of the staff members were amazing however we had some extra Excellent members that made sure our stay was Super Excellent. First the Secrets preferred club team: Mery, Francisco, Santos, and Carlos keep us well informed and hydrated. Next the entertainment staff: Kayen, Isuri,Akon and Milky Way ensured we enjoyed all the shows, belly dancing, circus night, the live bands, and the club activities were all great. Two wonderful hostesses, Mabel and Anlly made our dining experiences extra special. Anna J, waitress at the lobby bar was sweet and made sure the service was quick and consistent. Our overall star is Miguel from the lobby bar, he is incredible, his attention to detail and his commitment to service should be commended. Thanks for the rum lesson, hubby is still enjoying that one.

Secrets Royal Resort thank you for an amazing experience, see you next year!

Returned back from secrets royal beach ready to book again, weather at end of Nov was fantastic, had a minor issue with room and bed allocation, despite it taking a little while to resolve both Omar (hotel manager) and Henry (first choice rep) went above and beyond to ensure our holiday was not effected. In fact it transpired to be our best November trip to date!!! Food, staff and facilities were excellente!!!! Entertainment was slightly subdued in the adults side, there's only so much Sax's you can take in one evening!!!!!
Omar and staff were fantastic in providing 'props' for our last minute decision to make a 2014 calendar, we've not laughed so much in years!!!
Special mention to Acon, Henry, Milky Way, Will I am.....too many to name all!
Looking at booking for 2014 trip
Thank you Omar x calendar is on its way!!!!!!!

We stayed here 3 nights after staying at the Hard Rock for 5 nights. Secrets is definitely more tame on the nightlife side, but has more to do on the water activities side (in the ocean). The pools are very calm and serene, where at Hard Rock they have party pools, and quiet pools. Food was good, staff was friendly (Jacky and Milky Way are AWESOME!!). Room are clean and neat, just a little small (again, I'm comparing them to the Hard Rock which are huge). It's a great place and we had a lot of fun!!

We've just returned Dec 2013 from Secrets, which was our sixth all inclusive holiday at this time of year - so we've got a fair idea of comparisons. If you are going to this resort then it's definitely worth paying extra for the Preferred Club option.

The staff are very attentive and the accommodation and surroundings are very good, but there are a lot things that could be better. We had a few issues to begin with, which were rectified, but we had to push to ensure this happened and then there was a problem with noisy neighbours near the end of our stay, which actually made me want to pack up and go home early. However, despite this, if I was gong to the Dom Rep again, I'd consider this resort - but I've plenty of other places left to explore. I've still scored this 4/5 as it has redeeming qualities - the pool bar and buffet staff are superb and given the majority of our time was spent there - that's what this score is based on.

Arrival at Punta Cana
We went with BA Clubworld and our crew were fantastic, although we were unaware until we were in the Club Lounge at Gatwick that the flight was via Antigua - extending the journey by an extra hour and half - longer on the way back, but another story. The airport at Punta Cana is something else - it's a beautiful new building with a palm thatch roof and when you arrive it's quite relaxed. However, our leaving wasn't so good because BA didn't have a Club Lounge and gave us $40 worth of vouchers and we had to find seats in the crowded departure area - which was a big let down given the huge overall cost of the holiday.

Transfers
Our private transfer to and from the resort was excellent, in an air conditioned minibus, leather seats, safely driven and just us.

Check in at Secrets
When we arrived at Secrets and they realised we were "Preferred" they arranged a buggy to take us to the Preferred Lounge for check in. This was nice - we felt special, but the standard guests got drinks more quickly. There was never at any point anyone trying to sell us anything at all which was rather nice, but over the course of the two weeks, we ended up having to find the rep to tell us about potential tours and trips.

Accommodation - Room
The room was large and I wasn't surprised by the humidity and slightly damp smell as I've stayed in the Caribbean many times, and know what to expect. However, whilst my partner likes to sunbathe, he hates to be hot in the room and the air conditioning was displaying 18 degrees but clearly was not creating any cold air and we had to get maintenance in to sort this out. They did come very quickly and bought the temp in the room down for us.

Room Service - better than any hotel I've ever stayed in
We ordered room service and were amazed that it came within 30 minutes and was rather good. All included any time you want it - but to a specific menu. Very good - but they aren't quite so good at removing the plates after :-) I have never before experienced room service that was delivered that quickly and we used it about five times. The quality of the food was superb. One tip - if you ask for your steak medium rare - it will be rare - so if you like medium rare - order it medium and it will be perfect. That goes for the restaurants as well. The room service menu is fixed, but it's really very good and there's something for everyone. Drinks aren't on the menu to order, but one time they brought us red wine without us asking for it - and they said - "it will make the steak taste better". This was above and beyond in my book and I loved them for it - but would like to have had wine in the mini bar.

Room - coffee
The most annoying thing for me was on the first morning, finding that the coffee maker didn't work. I do like my coffee routine and it was irritating for us to find that whilst everything was clean, no checks were done on whether the room equipment was working. We got the coffee machine replaced, but I had to wait till the breakfast buffet for my first coffee in Dom Rep. They provide (as usual) a filter machine sachet of local coffee and a sachet of decaf and some powdered milk sachets - coffeemate type stuff on a daily basis. The Santo Domingo brand coffee is very good. We made sure (as usual) to buy beans to take home.

Minibar
The minibar was disappointing for us because it was filled with sugary drinks and beer and we like sparkly water and wine.... we couldn't get them to change this, but did give tips a few times and got some extra rum, but no wine. But they did keep leaving M&Ms and I wonder if I should really be complaining about this - maybe I'm being a bit picky.

Sleep and Turn-down Service
The bed was very wide and very comfortable with lots of pillows. We kept forgetting to leave a tip for our turn down service lady - and she varied her time quite a bit which didn't always work for us as we like to go to bed quite early and often we'd have to put the do not disturb thing on the door. One night she came whilst we were there so we sat on the terrace and let her do her stuff. She was meticulous to detail, and very professional and it's easy to forget these little extras. She'd leave two little Hershey's Kisses and the next day's newsletter.

Other Room Facilities
There was a good clock, that doubled as an iPod player, but the old 30 pin connection (not lightening) so was just a clock for us. One day the power had gone off but we didn't realise as we'd been in Santo Domingo - so we were a bit off time the whole of the next day. I didn't bother keeping my phone about me as the signal was poor at the resort, so WiFi seemed necessary to receive text messages. There is free WiFi in Preferred Club, but you need a voucher for every device you have which gives 15 hours, but even if you haven't used the hours it expires after a few days.... a bit tricky to work it all out if you have many devices.

The TV was a nightmare with only two English speaking stations - but we thought we'd be OK as we'd taken a hard drive. It wouldn't connect (NTFS). We converted all our media to different formats, which took ages and then found that these didn't work either. We went out and bought a USB stick to put the media onto but it still wouldn't work. Some of our stuff would play but the sound quality on the TV was so poor I gave up and went back to my kindle to read books. We were gutted on the day before we were leaving when they put a brand new Samsung TV in and our hard drive connected immediately and all our media was then available to watch! Oh well - again, I guess this is picky.

"Hot" Tub
We'd got a "hot" tub on our terrace - but it wasn't private enough to use without your swimsuit on and on my birthday my partner purchased the special service to fill the tub, sprinkle petals in the room and champagne on ice and flowers. All meant to be in the room at 3pm. They were late doing it, so even though he'd delayed me at the pool an hour, when we returned to the room, they were still preparing ... I didn't mind that - but the worst thing was that they'd filled the "hot" tub but the water was cold! There was no champagne or flowers, but I wasn't expecting these as it was all at that stage still a surprise. The Butler - Starlin was a sweetie and he was very apologetic, but I kept thinking how can you run a bath without checking the water? My partner wasn't happy as it was important to him to make my birthday special - and Secrets sadly failed to do this.

Birthday
On my birthday eve we went to Spice at the Now part of the resort for the Teppanyaki - which is the only thing you have to book for. My partner was on edge and I learned after it was because he'd asked for champagne for my birthday and it didn't come. When we returned to our room and the champagne wasn't there or the flowers, I could tell he was angry but trying hard to ensure that this didn't spoil my birthday. The thing that tipped it was the nextday's newsletter delivered by the turn down maid had no notification of my birthday. We also saw on lots of other room doors - a silk ribbon which marked anniversaries, weddings, welcome back and birthday; but I never got one :-(. As I was saying that we always go away at this time of year and I've got lots to compare with - I've had cakes brought and waiters singing Happy Birthday before with no arrangement. I've had sparklers brought to the dinner table and generally it's always marked by the hotel - but this time at Secrets it didn't happen and yet my partner had paid for it.

British People
This hotel does daily news for Canadians, US Americans, Germans and Spanish speaking nations. The only British news might be a line on page four in the Europe section of the International newsletter. The only thing I learned in my 14 day stay from the resort information was that Mick Jagger had become a great grandfather. I did end up assuming that you needed to be Canadian or US to get a banner on your door for your birthday or to get your name in the newsletter.

Room - bathroom
I kept noticing water on the floor in the bathroom and this started to get worse. We reported a leak and they "fixed" it, but there are two basins and they'd fixed only one. I very nearly slipped over and kept trying to mop up the water with the bath mat. This wasn't picked up by the cleaners despite the wet mats..... Finally we looked under the sink after the first repair that hadn't rectified the problem and saw a ridiculous amount of silicon mastic had been plastered around pipes that clearly needed replacing. When we saw this we suffered from a sort of "compound anger" as clearly the hotel had maintenance issues that they hadn't addressed and yet they were still happy to let out the room. As our complaints to concierge in the Preferred Lounge had been ineffective we went to see the Amstar Rep who was shocked and put us in touch with the Guest Services Manager - Lorraine. Lorraine immediately arranged for the plumbing to be repaired. When we returned to our room at the end of that day, there was champagne on ice and some fresh fruit.

Excellent Guest Services
The following afternoon the phone rang in the room and it was Lorraine, she was asking me if the leak problem had been rectified. I thanked her because we could see that they'd replaced the pipes. I thanked her for the champagne and said that although we had complained about the room and the special services, we were very happy generally with the resort, the service at the pool was superb as was breakfast and lunch etc. We very much liked the hotel and didn't like to complain but I knew how my partner had been so disappointed in his thwarted attempts to make my birthday special. Lorraine then asked us if we had any plans for the following day and would we like a cabana on the beach. This is a very special service where you get the cabana for a day with butler service. So that's what happened next - a bit of a fairy tale. We had the most fantastic day on the beach in the cabana - waited on by the fabulous Jacky. We had champagne. Lunch brought to us, silver service and constant attention to see if there was anything we needed. It was lovely and made me feel special for my birthday if a little belated. Thing is, we might have bought this service if we'd known it was available - no-one ever tried to sell us anything.

I am very grateful to Lorraine for this very special day on the beach which I will never forget.

Breakfast Buffet
The buffet at Secrets is as good as any that I've ever been to and you do not have to wait quite so long for omelettes in the morning or steaks at lunch as some places I've been to. If you are Preferred Club you get to sit on the top terrace or, if you like, in the Riverside restaurant. You never have to wait for coffee or to be refilled as the staff are so attentive. You sit looking out at the palms on the beach at the beautiful blue water with softly played ambient music - it really is paradise. You can eat healthily or naughtily. It really was the best start to the day.

Pool/Beach
There are plenty of sun loungers, but not as many that are shaded, so even though you are not supposed to reserve with towels before 08:00 am you'd be silly not to. For Preferred Club the staff come around frequently to get you drinks and there are plenty of bars. The NOW pool nextdoor does some entertainment thing in the afternoon around 3pm and this is a bit annoying if you are over 35 as it's loud, but - hey - people are on holiday and this is not something to complain about. Its quite funny really because you can see foam flying in the air and know that your kids would be there if they were with you on this holiday.

Lunch
We could have gone to any of the restaurants or the buffet, but found that we preferred the laid back atmosphere of the Barefoot Grill on the beach. We'd go and get a table, order our drinks with the lovely Rovinson (one of our star staff members) and then go to the grill to watch our steak, burger or shrimps being cooked. I'd pile salad on my plate and have just six chips and then Rovinson would bring me white wine and soda water (separately). He would remember us and give us a high five on arrival - which was lovely and he was the best waiter in the whole resort. It was great to sit there feeling the sun soaking into our backs, listening to the surf whilst tucking into freshly cooked high quality food, letting the wine (our first) relax us at the same time, but balancing it with some iced or soda water.

Poolside/Beach
Waiters come around continually asking if you would like a drink - my favourite was an Alexjhandro Special - amaretto, Baileys, Cointreau and mango yoghurt. Sounds strange but was fantastic, with ground nutmeg sprinkled over the top. If you try to drink it too quickly you'll get "brain freeze". The Preferred Lounge pool is quiet and has the most wonderful hammocks that you can get into to cool you down, they skim the water and have dappled shade so are perfect if you've got too hot. Cool down in the pool and then get in the hammock.

Restaurants
We tried them all except Tamarind or Gohan (he doesn't like Mexican and I don't like sushi). All the restaurants except Capers are well organised, service is prompt and attentive. Mercure is the French restaurant and it's deliciously decorated in white, red and silver, with an exciting menu. Spice is the Teppanyaki, but you don't need to book for the al a carte. The Blue Water Grill is a fab steakhouse and they really make sure you are happy. Oceania is the fish restaurant and the staff are just lovely. Riverside is specially for Preferred Club customers and lobster is on the al a carte menu. There are so many places to eat. You can always get a good steak, or giant shrimps or salad, or anything that you need according to your diet. The only one we didn't enjoy was Capers. Capers was chaotic and we wondered about the operational processes. We waited absolutely ages for our order to be taken and then for the main course - we were literally just about to leave as it arrived. Capers was totally different from the other restaurants, which as we already said were superbly organised.
All the food is of a very high standard. You never had to wait for a drink (apart from Capers). Great thing was that we were able to get a buggy back from the NOW lobby, to the Secrets lobby without too much of a wait.

Entertainment
We aren't big on this. We like to go to bed early, so most nights when we entered the plaza the entertainments weren't yet in full swing. That said, it all looked very interesting and professional. They always had the local band - a superb saxophone player (I play so I know) and the local team seemed to be very entertaining.

Summary
I'd go there again, but would like to feel that Brits are more welcome than currently - e.g. a dedicated newsletter. How do I feel about my birthday not being celebrated despite my partner's attempts... not sure. Overall, would prefer Barbados or Cuba.

Room Tip: Preferred Club is worth having but the rooms around the lazy river have a better outlook. the hot t...

We ask apologies if you ever felt that British citizens were less important, for us every customer is very important whatever their nationality is, and we sincerely regret that you took that impression. The failure forgetting your birthday in the newsletter is a serious detail, which we have failed and we are deeply sorry.

Please, if you decide to return to the hotel, do not hesitate to contact us and we will ensure that you receive from the first moment all the warm care and attention you deserve

In the name of my whole team, let me wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and all the best for the upcoming 2014.

Yours sincerely,

Luis Gomez
