We are from Atlanta, GA and we both were completely satisfied with our stay at the NH Royal Beach and the entire trip in Punta Cana - Dominican Republic. The front desk staff, ESMAILYN and others were outstanding and very accommodating to our needs. The food at the various restaurants was very good. We were pleasantly surprised how good the food was at the buffet. The entire stafff was friendly and always spoke and offered to provide assistance. The ONLY thing, I would change, is being notified about the dress code requiring long pants for dinner every nite. We did not know that and I only had 1 pair of long pants. But we made it work and joked about it. But make sure the men bring several pair of long pants for dinner. Also make sure you make your dinner and excursion reservations early . But overall, we both agree, this entire trip has earned 5 STARS!!!! Thanks for a GREAT experience. The Atlanta, GA Couple.

My husband and I visited Punta Cana for the first time mid June and loved this resort. We were upgraded to a swim up room at the pool which was great. The pool is huge and winds around the resort like a lazy river with bridges and walkways surrounding it. We loved the quiet of the adults-only setting. The staff is superb and cleaning, straightening and even painting was going on constantly. Special thanks to Erik, Hansel and Juan for all their super service and friendliness. We loved the food here and mostly ate at the buffet which has a beautiful seating area overlooking the beach. Ahhhh ... the beach ... picture perfect !!!! ... Beautiful soft sand, water temp about 80 and sun and a breeze everyday. We had 7 sunny days, 1 hour of rain. I loved this resort and would recommend it to all (but no kids). Apple is the way to go.

DH and I booked this resort for a week through CheapCarribean.com and got a fabulous deal. For the value, we had a tremendous time. We were a bit weary given some of the very mixed reviews, but would highly recommend for travelers on a moderate budget.

First the good:
-Service. Hands down the BEST service at any hotel/resort we've ever stayed at (including 5 star properties in Vegas, Spain, etc). Everyone was friendly, hard-worker and eager to please. If you do speak Spanish, the staff will eagerly help teach you more and if you don't, most speak excellent English.

-Cleanliness/Grounds: The NH Royal is immaculate. Staff are constantly cleaning, grounds keeping and collecting empty glasses, used towels, etc so that everything is always clean, fresh and bright. I must also add here that the grounds are astonishingly pest free. That isn't to say that you won't see the occasional small spider or other insect, but horror stories of mosquitoes over-running the place are ridiculous. Better pest control than our 5 star resort in Hawaii! Room was large, clean and mini-bar was stocked to our specifications each day.

-Location: Very near the Punta Cana Airport, the hotel's private beach and other facilities feel secluded, but aren't far from points of interest (coral reefs, caves, rum plantations, etc)

-Drinks: Strong, plentiful and available whenever you want them (especially enjoyed the fresh coconuts and pineapples in which you could order drinks if you wanted). Even the Presidente beer (other than Corona, the only kind they serve, was like a pleasant Pillsner). Try the Mamma Juana!!!!

-Security: Security made sure that no one without a bracelet would enter the grounds, and kept the vendors off the property. There are so many staff that I never felt unsafe, even alone at night, and locks, safes in room, etc all worked properly.

-Entertainment: There is much to do and see both during the day and at night. We loved shooting pool and watching World Cup at the sports bar, playing blackjack in the Casino, floating up to the pool bar and watching the evening entertainment (the cirque show was fabulous).

Addressing some of the concerns of other reviewers:

-Chairs on the beach/by the pool: I can only think that either the NH Royal read the reviews of the so-called "lack of availability" and responded in a BIG way, or that the other reviewers mistook this resort for another one. There are HUNDREDS of chairs and Cabanas available at ANY hour of the day (mind you this is during late-June, prime time for summer travelers) and there were always TONS of places to relax (with or without shade, whatever your preference)

-Air conditioning: Our particular room's AC worked SO WELL that we had to turn it up. That said, other did complain that their rooms were too warm, and the last day and a half the AC seemed to be non-existent throughout the resort. That was, indeed a pain. Especially true when the humidity reached staggering proportions. Still, there was respite in the shade, in the pool and with cool drink in hand.

-Spanish: As mentioned above, some have complained that the staff speaks virtually no English, and it leads to difficulty communicating. While there are a handful of staff members who speak limited English, English is WIDELY spoken and there are always staff members around who can assist with translation.

-Reservations at ala cartes: We did go on the first day to make reservations, and were able to secure them for all but 2 nights. The deal is that not every a la carte is open every night, and they try to keep the crowds light (possibly because they level of service would be compromised if they packed the restaurants).

-Internet: While seemingly reasonable at $25/25 hours (more than enough for the week), only cash is accepted and wi-fi signal is spotty at best, non-existent at worst. There are business centers where you might be better off paying by the hour if you really need access.

-Food: SEE BELOW

The Bad:

-Food: We do live in SF and we do it well. That said, even relativity, it's really, really, really unimaginably terrible. Everything from the buffet (we stuck to salads and freshly cooked eggs) to the a la carte "Italian" lacked spice, flavor and was served in odd, unappetizing combonations. An example: we went to "Pure," the a la carte tasting menu joint, and were served bizarre combos of mushy lobster with an overwhelming vanilla/cinnamon sauce, roast beef with cubes of gelee and veggies, along with some other monstrosities. I'm all for creativity, but the chefs need to stick to the basics. Even the room service was strange. We ordered chicken soup three times and each time it was a different color (red, yellow, green) and the ingredients changed! Your best bets were at the grill (plain grilled chicken) or at the teppenyaki restaurant called "Asia." It is worth mentioning that EVERYONE, literally, that we spoke with experienced illness of some sort. I'm just not sure of the food handling procedures. Sticking to salads, etc seemed to improve the situation.

-Vendors: While the security does a fabulous job of keeping outside vendors off the property, there are an ARMY of guides hawking tours and excursions that are allowed to operate on the grounds. These folks, while not aggressive, per se, are persistent, and will come up and stand very near your chair and try to talk you into whatever tour they are selling. Most go away when you say "no, gracias," but they come around everyday and we'd be confronted by at least 8 or more when sitting near the pool or at the beach. This is annoying, and can be uncomfortable for guests. The hotel should limit this.

Some tips:

-Bring snacks. Not just to mitigate the poor food quality, but because snacks are really unavailable throughout the day. You can't take food out of the buffets/a la carts, and other than some popcorn in the sports bar and some chips for purchase in the gift-shop, snacks are unavailable.

-Inner-tubes are only $6 in the gift shop. If you don't already own one, you're just as well-off purchasing one there, where they will inflate it for you (for free) on the beach.

-Coffee at the lobby bar. Absolutely fabulous and made to order. Order cafe con leche for a treat.

-Leave a note (in Spanish, if possible) with $1 on the mini-bar and they'll bring you whatever you want

-Tipping is appreciated and results in even BETTER service. $1/every few drinks is just fine, a couple of bucks for meals, etc. Just beware that the staff can't make change for you, and the ONLY place you are allowed to get change is in the lobby of NH Royal or the adjoining property. On this note, we didn't see a single ATM, so bring cash.

If not for the food, this would have been a DREAM vacation. Even despite the food, it was relaxing, fun and we felt we got our monies worth.

This Resort seems to strive for nothing less than perfection. The resort is kept extremely clean. The entire staff was very cheerful and helpful. The front desk and Bell Hop's Juan Tapia and Ramo went out of their way to help us. This was our first trip outside the USA and this was a wonderful exprience. I was very impressed with the entire resort. The only down side was the food. Thier seems to be a large selection and is presented beatifuly. The quality is average. The waiters are extremely atentive.

This was our first visit to this island and we were pleasantly surprised. The rooms were very clean and spacious, the garden view was beautiful. Our first day there it rained but we stayed on the beach under the protection of the palm tree huts and enjoyed the day. The beach was absolutely beautiful and the staff was awesome. They provided excellent, friendly service and was always attentive to our needs.

We would like to send a special thank you to: Esther, Edward, Abraham, Josela, Gomez, Jacqueline Yolenny and Margarita. You guys are the best!! We hope to visit again next year....see you then!!

Let me start by saying I'm a first time contributor to TripAdvisor, but I am a well seasoned traveler (business and pleasure). I booked this trip with Apple Vacations.

Apple Orientiation - A must to attend! Miguel was very informative and helpful!
Hotel Room - Big, very spacious, very comfortable. We were in 5367 and had a great ocean/pool view. Air conditioning was comfortable for my taste.
Grounds - Beautiful & clean. Not a huge resort so it was very easy to walk around and not a far walk to the beach from any where within the resort.
Staff - The best! Too many names to list - but they were all great people to meet . I felt like royalty. They work long, long days - but always had a smile.
Food - We ate at all the restrauants except the Shore Grill. They were all good (not exceptional, but good). The thing I respect about this resort is that all the staff is from the DR. I feel that if they would have Asian staff at the Asian Restr. and French staff at the French Restr. - that would have made the experience different (but not better). I have been to resort locations where the staff is from all over the world and the service/food was just ok - but here in the DR the service with the good food made it a very nice dining experience.
Nighttime Entertainment - William and Raymond....Oh so sexy! Clappy, Clappy, Clappy!
Beach - WOW! The best. No problem getting a lounger or a palopa. The "flea market" guys can be pushy, but if you dont talk back to them other than to say no,no,no - they will leave you alone. Water is beautiful and clear.
Pool - Awesome. So nice that everyone is not pooled into one pool area - I never felt like my space was intruded upon. Remember to take your own floating device!

We did utilize the sister NH Arena resort next door - their beach side lunch buffet is a great alternative to getting dry and putting on clothes to eat at the Royal side. Food selection was good. The nightly entertainment is held on the Arena side but the Royal side did have a DJ or live band each night too - it was more relaxing on the Royal side and wilder (sexier) on the Arena side.

We did a 1/2 day fishing trip thru Apple with the companyy "Gone Fishing". We had Roberto as our deck hand - he spoke English and Spanish. It was nice to lear more about the DR people and their lifestyle from him.

Overall - no complaints. A great resort!

My wife and I were at the NH Royal Beach from June 14 - 19 and really enjoyed the location and facilities. They were as nice as any we have been to. However the food is average to below average and the wine/alcohol is not what we expected from a 5 star resort. Breakfast was by far the best meal served at the buffet. The bacon, sausage, omlettes and fruit were very good. The fresh squeezed orange juice was excellent. We loved sitting on the deck and enjoying our meals while overlooking the beach. Lunch was Ok. The beef fajitas and chicken fingers were pretty good. Dinner was very average. My wife is a wine drinker and the wine was terrible. I like to drink Crown Royal and domestic beer but the best they could do was Jack Daniels or Jim Beam. They did have Corona at the pool bar but only every other day. Deibe at the pool bar is very entertaining.

The bad part was that my wife was sick the last 2 days although we took as many precautions as possible. Do not drink the tapwater - don't even brush your teeth with it. You get plenty of bottled water in your room and you can always ask for extra ( a small tip helps).

We have done many cruises and decided to try this for a change. We will go back to cruising
