“Great Vacation”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

Great weather, nice facilities, very good food, fabulous beach, and best of all, wonderful staff! Everyone from the housekeeping staff to the waiters and entertainment staff - they all were friendly, always had a warm smile and seemed to take pride in their jobs. We really got to know some of the entertainment staff well because part of their job is to interact and visit with the guests - a special mention to Jhonatan, Leiby, Armando and Cassandra! And a special thanks to Robert, who delivered many great non-alcoholic fruit drinks to me on the beach, always with a smile on his face. The size of the resort was perfect - big enough to have the facilities anyone would want, but small enough to be close to everything and feel special when a staff member remembers your name. It was also nice to be the only resort within sight looking either way on the beach. It had a nice remote, exclusive feel. Wonderful all-inclusive vacation!

Room Tip: We were at the back of building #4 (yellow) on the 2nd (top) floor - it was very quiet and still not...

This was our 2nd visit and, disappointed. Pools need repairs, reported that a step was missing on the ladder in the big pool, was never fixed, that's a safety hazard. Tiles coming off in the pools. They have a double pool with tile steps to walk into the pool with green algae growing along the edges. The outside of buildings need repair. Our patio door had no screen & no handle to open or close the door. Grounds were beautiful & well kept. Waiters & waitress work very hard, along with the cleaning staff. kept awake one night by bottles getting banged around by staff, & sounded like someone was using a jack hammer outside in the middle of the night. Vanity mirror is unusable because its so high up the wall. Weather was beautiful. I would not recommend this Excellence. We have stayed at other Excellence which are so much nicer.

Greetings from snowy and frigid Western New York!! We just got back from 5 days and 4 nights at Excellence Punta Cana. First we should have stayed at least one more day. There is so much to do and see we actually felt "settled in" on our last day and wish we had one or two more days to spend in paradise! Everyone there is just over the top friendly and makes sure you have everything you need and sometimes things you didn't think you needed! Roberto and his team are EXCELLENTE! I wish I could remember everyone's names, but that thing called age makes it hard! Jose at the martini bar, Jose at the omelet station, PEDRO at the swim up bar.....I really wish I could remember more! Have a CocoLoco, you will love it, plus it's cool that you drink right out of a coconut!

The drive from the airport is about 40 minutes. Smooth easy drive. Worth the $70 each way to arrange a private car to pick you up at the airport and take you back to the airport. There is a little form you fill out through the hotel a few weeks prior to your scheduled arrival with your flight info and they do the rest. It's not a shuttle or taxi, it's a private car which was really nice!

Upon your arrival you are greeted with "Welcome Home!", a cold glass of champagne and a nice cool washcloth to freshen up. Pampering to commence! It was exactly like what I was hoping it to be like when you think of a tropical vacation!

We booked a garden view Excellence Club room.....awesome! The Excellence Club well worth the extra cost....we visited it every evening for a top shelf nightcap and delicious desserts. The EC is available all day long and it's so cozy...wonderful buffet of little snacks and beverages all self serve all you want. Top shelf and better liquor. Beautiful leather chairs and couches....big screen tv.....little cafe tables and a balcony to hang out on. It was a nice quiet spot to chill.

Our room was 8107 garden view.....lovely! Quiet. We almost booked a swim up, but it would have not been very private. A pool view would be good and more private, but the garden view was really private, which we enjoyed for our first time. You have to remember that the hotel is right on the ocean, so it has "worn" areas because of the salt air and sun beating on it 24/7. We have only been to two all inclusives so far and this one was even better than the last one which was The Ritz Carlton in Jamaica. There were little areas of minor construction going on, but nothing obstructive.....the place is so huge there is no way they could find convenient times to do maintenance work....and as soon as they see you coming they move to the side or stop any work they are doing to let you pass safely.

Food.....breakfast buffet at Toscana was fantastic! We would load up there and usually didn't eat again til dinner. We visited The Grill twice for lunch....it was ok, but not satisfying. They deliver pizzas to the pool area starting at noon, which I wish we had noticed early on....attendants just walk around with a stack of them for anyone who wants one. There is a great little BBQ spot at the beach which again I wish we had found before wasting our time at The Grill. We ordered room service twice....yes it's also included....and it was very good for snacks and lighter fare late at night. The Italian restaurant was good...I had the spinach lasagna and it was very good....my husband had the Mediterranean pizza and loved it. Tuesday night the hotel decked out the beach area with lights and wrapped the trees in white gauze materiL...it was really pretty...everyone was invited for dinner in the Santa Domingo plaza area...no reservations, buffet style....greeted with a margarita and seated at large round tables with other guests. The atmosphere was fun and festive, the food not so much! We left hungry.....the other restaurants were closed because of the huge dinner event so we went to the EC and nibbled there then went back to our room and ordered room service. There were numerous other restaurants we did not get to....we heard from others that the French restaurant was very good, but small portions so order several things. There was a line waiting to get into the tapas restaurant one night, so that would be a good sign. Just remember you are not in the US so meat is not same quality we are used to.

I see reviews on the bed are negative.....we had no problem with it. The shower.....come on.....really....are those people that self conscious? LOL! We are in our early 50's....certainly not beach babe bodies.....we found the window to be funny! It steams up once you are in there anyways, so what's the big deal? Not like anyone is sitting there watching you! Or maybe there is!? LOL!

What matters in the end is that we will go back "home" soon!! Thank you Excellence for a memorable, relaxing, vacation in paradise!

So I'd have to rate our experience a 3.5 out of 5, some if the issues that brought our rating down was utility problems, the electric went off several times a day, the hot water was off for half a day and wifi was usually not strong enough. The vanity mirror was way too high, I couldn't even use it.

We liked our room location, was in building 14, room 14206, which was a "garden view" but we were pleasantly surprised to actually have an ocean view from the balcony, which had the light hanging by it's wires.
High ceiling was nice and the area was quiet, but far away from activities and restaurants. It was close to the beach which I liked.

The food while we didn't starve, but, like most people have already mentioned, it was ok nothing great and some items just not edible, we like the las olas on the beach for lunch and we ordered room service 2 mornings and my food was pretty much cold till it was delivered.

We ate at Spice, Agave and the Lobster house and Toscana for breakfast, that was good.
Drinks definitely enough alcohol in them but they weren't as good as I've had at other places, and mostly served in Tupperware type glasses, which for a place that boosts 5 stars the drinks should look appealing. The strawberry daiquiris were magenta in color and really didn't taste like a daiquiri. I don't mean to be critical but simple things can make a big difference.

The grounds were very well maintained and there were always people painting and fixing things, the light switch fell apart in our room and it was fixed the next day.

The botanical gardens was nice to walk around and feed the animals.

The gift shop is a rip, with it's 30 dollar sunscreen! Make sure you take your own, as we did but heard others complaining about running out and the mark up.

No issue with check in or out and we did not upgrade or were even offered to the excellence club. Not really sure I saw much of a benefit, a special section on the beach maybe.

Wish the pools would be open later.

The beach was nice and clean, but the beach service compared to other places I've been was a bare minimum, and actually the two days I was out there wasn't served one drink. We went for them ourselves.
People were up at the crack of dawn to save their chairs, which isn't suppose to happen, but they do.

We had a good time don't get me wrong, just writing an honest review, I loved the adults only that was the best thing.

My first time here and to the DR. Went with Mom (45), cousin (36ish), me (26) all females on a birthday getaway for mom in early October 2013. The trip from the airport to the resort was a little fast and rough for my California country girl taste, but "when in Rome," right? Once arriving to Excellence we were graciously welcomed with a Champagne flute and cold wet towel. With the humidity, the wet towel was perfect! Everything is OPEN, which is something I didn't expect, and this added to the ambiance of "hey, I'm in a beautiful tropical place." Furnishing was very nice, everything was very clean and constantly being cleaned. All appreciated. Check in easily, rolled to our room which wasn't the closest or easiest to remember the first go around (or 5 haha) but we got the hang of it eventually. Room was simple and clean and AC worked marvelously. View from the room featured a tropical garden and a small unfenced patio with hammock. If hammocks are your thing, this was nice and quiet and there were bugs (when in Rome). I preferred the beach and poolside to lounge around. "Mini" bar was more than I expected, beers (3ish DR varieties) sodas, water, (maybe juice) and a few fifths of alcohol which was all replenshed and upon request they would restock or add what you wished for. The activities on the resort ranged from the complimentary horseback riding (book on the first day, this fills up quick) evening shows, pool excercise and fun, night discoteque, casino, eating, drinking, and I did walk by tennis courts and maybe some other sports type courts...There is a small convenient store equipped with essentials: otc drugs (and viagra, bow chica wowow) feminine products, cameras, batteries, sunscreen, bug off, souveniers, etc. There are plenty of places to eat. The only one I personally didn't care for was the Latin themed restaurant. Being from California, this was definitely not "real" Latin food. Typically ate breakfast at the buffet and some lunches. Everything fresh and some made to order items. The private beach was gorgeous, however we did run into some local kids towards the end of the beach, but they seemed to keep to themselves.I did see a few small schools of fish, spent some time boogey boarding (found the board near one of the life guard posts) The beach was best in the morning (mid afternoons seemed to be cloudy when I went) and at night it was beautiful. Very comfortable lounges with plush cushions and lots of help for drinks and towels. Shade was provided by these fun thatched umbrellas. There are also a few beach beds (full/queen sized?) that were used by very cute couples. Highlight: the Spa services. I'm not a huge spa girl, however this place is amazing. Again, very open to the outside, romantic and serene beds in the gardens, a lot of attentional to detail to make it very special. The staff were very helpful at the pool, at the bars, on the beach, in the restaurants, concierge, spa, we basically were satisfied all in all. Some huge personal tips to anyone reading this: 1. Your average lotion sunblock (banana boat) seemed to deter the bug bites. I went through a WHOLE can of bug off and that didn't quite do the trick. 2. US Dollars are used pretty much everywhere on the resort and the shops (small bills for tips for shuttles, tour excursions, those drivers, hosts, etc.) 3. Book all your excursions on the first day 4. There are plenty of couples and honeymooners and weddings here and this resort seems to cater to that well. 5. WiFi was available and was spotty at times, so this was a nice perk in contacting loved ones and fun Facebook/Instagram posts. Use Texting apps and social media for best communication. 6. Presidente (DR beer) seemed to be the only beer really offered, and hardly every cold, however I did find a few different DR beer options at the "sports bar" AND one bar clear across concierge did serve Coors Light (which I found out on day 5) So if you're a craft/microbrew beer kinda person, you will find yourself finding your buzz on otherwise. I stuck to wine/champagne as my go tos. 6. WATERPROOF CAMERA. You find out quick with conversations with others on what to do and eat and drink on the resort. Excurusions, I reccomend the catamaran boat trip and the Santo Domingo city tour. Catamaran was a party type excursion with snorkeling, drinks, small group activity in the water, silly dancing and a meal to end the trip. Take lots of photos! I WISH I had a water proof camera. They have a photographer on the catamaran, but unfortunately on ours, he was unable to produce the photos as advertised (technical difficulties.) Santo Domingo was more of a touristy educational museum type tour, and kept to a small area in town. The cathedral required a certain dress code (covered shoulders and bottoms minimum knee length) however they have small fleece covers for women who don't meet that code. I bought my souvenir type stuff cheaply in town and at one of the bathroom break stops along the way. (which was stopped both ways) I perused this bathroom break stopped on the way down there, bought sovenirs in town, and whatever I had left or found cheaper I returned to buy at the bathroom break shop. There was soo much to do at the resort and everyone was so accomodating. A DEFINITE perk was the adults only aspect. I would return with my significant other again in the future.

This was our family's 2nd year at The Excellence (Feb 8-19th, 2014) and it was everything we expected, and more. The weather, food and staff were wonderful. There was a new restaurant this year called "Flavor Market" which we all really enjoyed. However the overall #1 restaurant was SPICE, followed by CHEZ ISABELLE, AGAVE, FLAVOR MARKET and OREGANO's.

A special mention to some of the amazing staff:

1. Cassandra, Luz, Armando and Chelio for keeping us pleasantly entertained and getting us to participate in their beach games.
2. Gremie, Evelyn, and Sonia from the Martini Bar for always being so efficient in getting us cocktails and drinks with their amazing personalities.
3. Jonathon at Spice and Sandy at Chez Isabelle for making our dinners memorable and serving us excellent food.
4. Robert at the Sol Bar for keeping the drinks rolling so quickly on the beach and at the bar.
5. Dario for helping us coordinate our chairs and towels, even when it rained.

We will be back!

We just returned from 7 days at the Excellence Resort. This was our 2nd stay at an all-inclusive, first with an Excellence Resort. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed. The staff were all friendly and helpful with getting you checked in and settled. We liked the seperate service of the excellence club, but would have preferred one on one check in, rather than check in with the group that arrived on the transfer with us. We also enjoyed the private Excellence Club beach. It was never a problem to find space under a hut, sometimes a problem on the non-club side.

We travelled with a large group of friends, and it was the perfect getaway for 12 adults. The resort was large enough we could spread out, but small enough that when we wanted to find each other is was easy.

We had an excellence club, garden view room. The only complaint we have about the room is the firmness of the bed. It was quite harder than we were use to, but we survived. We enjoyed the stocked mini bar. The concierge was nice enough to accomodate our requests for specific beverages. We also enjoyed the nightly petite fours, it was a sweet treat before bed.

Every resturant was delicious. No complaints. Most of the resturants were accomodating to our large group, or split us into two groups. I liked the no reservation policy. I've been to a resort before and been burned on not being able to get any good reservations. It was fun to meet up at the Stars Bar (Hey Dino!) for happy hour and then decide where we wanted to go. Spice and Chez Isabelle were our favorites, but there was really nothing negative to say about any of them.

One ementity we missed from home was cream in our coffee. We asked, but continued to recieved warm milk instead. We just decided to skip the coffee and co straight to the Dirty Bananas instead. Also make sure to ask for a Coco Loco, the best coccount drink I've had! Again, Dino at the Stars Bar did a great job of keeping our glasses full. Edward at the Sports Bar was hilarious, and Juan Pablo made an awesome margarita. Verdil at the cascade pool was also fantastic!

One things we constantly noted was how friendly and HAPPY the staff were. That's a hard service to find sometimes. No one ever seemed disgruntled, or distrubed by your requests. We never saw one employee talking or playing on a cell phone. Each employee was impecibly dressed, complete with a huge smile.

Overall we were very pleased and we would gladly return to Excellence Punta Cana, or any Excellence Resort!
