Excellence Punta Cana
Ranked #15 of 114 Hotels in Punta Cana
Reviewed 22 August 2014

We had a wonderful visit to Excellence Punta Cana. We got a killer deal including our airfare and all inclusive package flying from LA and were very impressed with the value. The property itself was beautiful; including an enormous, sprawling pool and the gorgeous beach just steps away.

There were many restaurants and bars with short or no waits and great service. We give the resort 4 stars because the food was not the best we have had at an all-inclusive resort. Agave (the Mexican restaurant) and the breakfast options were delicious, however dinner options like Spice (the Asian restaurant) and Toscana (Italian) were below par.

The activities were ample and engaging; including water volleyball, boogie boarding, scuba lessons, snorkeling, and many poolside activities. We had the most basic "garden view" room option and were very impressed with the dry bar, spa bath, and private patio with a hammock under the palm trees.

Overall, it was a great vacation!

Stayed in Negril the year before at Formerly Grand Lido-then Breezes, and thought it was Great! (Proximity to the beach, service, and onsite luxury (don't want to have to trek all around-want to enjoy relaxation and choose a place that has everything we want when on vacation).
Before even reaching the room, we turned to eachother and said...wow-this blows away last year-we are So Spoiled now.

Must do Excellence Club-Jr Swim-up Ocean View.
Wish there were MORE excellence resorts!!

We truly enjoyed ourselves while at Excellence. We stayed in an ocean view room at the Excellence Club level. The experience that we had here has really set the bar high for our other travels as we now compare every vacation to this one. From the time we arrived to the time we left, we felt as if we were royalty. The staff was ALWAYS very attentive to our needs. All the staff knew our names by the second day and which beverage we would like. The room was always clean and well stocked. The pools were well maintained. The gardens were beautiful. The beach was cleaned every morning and ready with water activities. The evening entertainment was excellent. The casino was fun. The restaurants are very good. I don't believe that we had one bad meal the entire trip. We definitely want to return. EXCELLENTE!

Room Tip: Excellence Club rooms are on the quiet side of the resort with a Club level guests only.

I visited this hotel from the 2nd August for 2 weeks with my wife
Since we booked the holiday I've looked at reviews on trip advisor so here is my thoughts on the holiday
A bit hectic one tip is to go on line and book your tourist card it will save you a lot of time. While your being processed your bags are removed from the carousel. Our transport to the hotel was arranged by out tour operator it took about 45 mins.
Check in
Once we arrived we were greeted with "Welcome Home" and given a glass of champagne and a cool towel our bags were taken care of while we were checked in.
Upon arrival we were asked if we want to up grade to the Excellence Club which we did
Don't up grade it's a lot of money for what you receive yes you get top shelf liquor but unless you are intending to spend most of your time in your room then you hardly use it.
The Excellence room is nice to chill out in but again unless you intend to spend most of your time there you don't get your monies worth.
You get better beds on the beach but around the pool there is no preferential treatment.
We're upgraded to a 3rd floor room in block 8 room 8209
We found the room really nice high vaulted ceiling and we like the decor. We had no problem with the lay out of the bathroom
Take a small torch with you to use at night in the toilet so not use the light and wake your partner up
The mini bar was well stock with mixers and soft drinks
I must mention our cleaner Margot she clean our room everyday and kept it spotless for us we always looked forward to returning to our room in the afternoon to be greet with her towel art and like all the other staff we were greeted with Ola and Como Sta
We enjoyed the beach you always find a lounger but you had to get up really early to get one of the large covered beds at the back
The sea was a little rough but that never stopped us going in and having fun in the waves.
The beach is private to the hotel so always quite and you could take leisurely walks along the beach
Be careful when you walk past the shops on the beach as the owners can be quite intimidating to get you to come in and have a look around
The shop owners make try to bargain with you to bring alcohol from your room to swap for gifts
My next shout out goes to Isla who was one of the Beach Excellence Concierge she was so helpful finding you a lounger putting the towels on for you. Also the hotel has a policy of not allowing to save beds but I'm afraid our American friends seem to ignore this especially on the cabanas but if they were not being used then your towels and items were taken off and taken to the Concierge hut
Two sides to the pool separated by a small wall one side had the swim up bar and all the activities but the top end were we spent most of our time was a lot more quite and there was always plenty of sun loungers available. I use to enjoy playing hunt the floats with the American guests who seemed to enjoy hiding them or taking them all to the swim up bar
I need to mention Hector the pool waiter he always had a smile and kept you supplied with drinks all day we also became the cocktail of the day tasters and when you meet him say "Lovely Jubley" that seemed to be his saying to us perhaps he said to all the English guests.
I suppose it's all about personal choice but this is our opinion
Toscana severed a Buffett style breakfast with also a live cooking station that prepared omelettes fresh for you but you could get everything from fresh fruit to cereals and hot food lunch is the same buffet style
The Grill
Lunch time menu is great had a lovely burger and fries
One of the two restaurants you don't need to wear trousers too the other being Lobster House but be warned the Mosquitos will have a field day
Flavour Market
This was our least favourite restaurant was supposed to serve Tapas but I've never had egg and chips as Tapas
Serving Asian food this was very nice especially the Pad Thai my wife loved the chairs
Lobster House
The second of the two restaurants that you didn't need long trousers to get in really enjoy the meal but was spoilt with an invasion of mosquitoes
Italian food I enjoyed but some dishes lacked flavour
Chez Isebella
This was our favourite restaurant serving French food all the menu was delicious especially the Chateau Brion
A mention should go to our waiter Sandy he works both in Toscana and Chez Isebella's he always made sure that we had coffee in the morning and champagne

Although both my wife and I really enjoyed our holiday it was spoilt by the Mosquitoes and we came prepared with Deet Spray, after sun containing insect repellant and wrist bands we bought on the plane none of this did any good we still got eaten alive.
The hotel did everything they could spray smoke bombing at night and through the day supply bug spray but even the staff were getting bitten.
Buy something called damp rid to hang in your wardrobe to stop the musty smell on your clothes

My wife and family went down for her birthday and we all loved the place. Everyone were super friendly and accomodating to us. Always available to hand us a drink and anything else we needed. We tried eating at all the restaurants but couldn't make them all. We found ourselves eating at The Grill a few times with a wonderful server by the name of David Mendoza who made our eating experince wonderful!!! Definitely a place we would go back to another time. We missed the dinner on the beach night because of the mosquitoes but the dinner was lovely nevertheless. Definitely recommended!!

We had such an amazing time here! The staff were kind, fun and diligent. The grounds were beautiful (obviously well kept) as were the buildings. The beach was beautiful with plenty of seating and the seaweed was cleaned every morning! The food and drinks were excellent and we really enjoyed the varying atmospheres of the restaurants. Will definitely be recommending and we hope we can come back one day!

***Only complaint is about the mosquitos! Apparently they aren't normally bad in August but I would bring bug spray just in case. I will say they made a sincere effort to rid the grounds of the mosquitos as much as possible - usually fogging a few times a day.

Room Tip: Rooms by the waterfall pool are much quieter than the rooms by the main pool. Even during the day it...

We went to the Excellence Punta Cana for our honeymoon last week and it was awesome!!! I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a romantic getaway. We were not alone being couples on their honeymoon. I would say there was at least 15 other couples. The hotel is about 40 minutes from the airport which my new wife did not like, but she doesn't like car rides anyway. The hotel staff greets you as you get out of the car with a glass of Champaign and a cool towel.

Check in: We upgraded to the Excellence Club which included private check in located in Excellence Club room which was air-conditioned. We were shown to our room which had an Excellence Honeymoon banner on the door so that was nice.

The Room: The rooms were fine, I agree with the other posts about the room having a musty smell and that it was set up weird with the glass shower, but we didn't care. We were on the third floor and the room had a nice vaulted ceiling and a view of the pool and the ocean. Bed was a little hard. I had the AC set on full cold and the room wasn't that cold, I had them come out to check, but nothing changed. So the rooms in general were ok. I did like the mini bar with the excellence club, had nice upgraded liquor.

The Pools: Pools were great, and huge!!!! Plenty of places to sit, except the shaded spots, those were a hot commodity so act fast if you see one :) Drink service around the bar was hit or miss. Most of the time you were better off going to get your own.

The Beach: Beach was great! water was always rough. Red flag was always up, but I like playing in the rough water. Pleny of places to sit on the beach, if you do the excellence club you have a private beach area with more comfortable chairs and plenty of shade. The covered beach beds are also a hot commodity. Apparenty you have to get up at 6am to get one. I wasn't doing that on our honeymoon. We did get lucky one day and there was one open. They are pretty awesome!!!

Pool Bars and Service: Service was hit or miss really. Even on the beach where you were suppose to have a concierge bring you drinks in the excellence club they weren't very good. Even if you gave them a tip!!!!! Which I don't understand. Usually when they see you tipping they make sure you are treated right. Go get you own drinks :)

Restaurants: Food was amazing! We ate at the Agave the first night, it was good, but not the best. Toscana, the Italian restaurant was great! We ate there twice. Spice the Asian restaurant was also great! The Flavor Market is their tapas restaurant, I'm not fond of tapas, but it was really good too, plus you can order as much as you want! The French restaurant was excellent! Word of advice, if you order wine and order the house you will leave dinner drunk! You basically have a never ending glass of wine, they are constantly topping it off! The house wine is perfectly fine. I liked it anyway, but I'm not a wine snob. The breakfast buffet is overwhelming and huge! and really good! Plus they have make your own bloody Mary's and mimosas :). Had one after breakfast each day. Lunch, we ate at Las Olas which is on the beach once, they usually have some sort of theme lunch each day. We liked taco day. The buffet was excellent again for lunch, great pasta station and many other good things.

Entertainment: The shows were good. The bands or singers that were on before and after were also good.

Advice: Mosquitos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow they were horrible!!! Bring deep woods off! The resort said they were never this bad this time of the year. They were fogging at night and had Off at the front desk to use. But I would bring your own and use it in the morning and the evening. Also, drink a Mammajuanna. Just ask for it at the bar, its good :)

Overall and excellent trip. I will gladly return to the Excellence Punta Cana the next time I go to the DR.
