“Riu Palace Bavaro- Eddy & Sheila”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

Having read quite a few reviews before leaving on this holiday we compared the whole lot with our previous experiences of the Dom. Rep.
As we commented on the Cayo Levantado, we can only assume that some travellers think that a 4 or 5 star rating is comparable to top City Hotels.
Please listen folks , this is a third world country. Since our first visit to the Dominican Republic 12 years ago the infrastructure of the country has vastly improved but there is nothing that can compare ( to our present knowledge ) to top London / Paris / New York establishments.
OK so what do we think of the Riu Palace Bavaro !!
This is a quite new hotel, first impressions were very good. The check in was very quick . The staff were really helpful and smiles were abundant. The welcome cocktail was a cooling refreshing touch.
The whole place was very clean , we noticed staff wiping and cleaning everything from our first day.
We were celebrating our anniversary/ my 60 th. birthday so I had emailed the hotel to confirm our request for a sea view upper floor.
On our arrival we were given room 3123. Highly recommended. This gave a great view down to the vip pool and the sea.
The room is in the open plan style with the bath "in" the room , my wife was a little perturbed about this initially but I wasn't bothered at all. You are on holiday "CHILL" !!!
Optics in room with rum, whiskey, vodka and gin plus beer/lager and soft drinks in fridge. Also water, plus coffee making kit. I much preferred the optics, ahem !!
Rooms were cleaned each day with an evening turndown service. We left a couple of dollars each day as a tip. The "Towel Art " was always great fun and puts a smile on your face.
As "standard " guests. Not VIP we could only use the main pool. There were always lots of loungers , the hotel was initially quite quiet. Into our second week there were more guests but always seemed to be plenty of space.
The beach and sea were very good , plenty of loungers , although not much in the way of protection from the noonday sun as there are none of the beach parasols. I love swimming and snorkelling and had a great time.
The buffet and restaurants were of a good calibre and there is always something for every one.
The bar in the lobby can offer just about any drink, Yippee!!
The service from all the staff was very good and they will always try to please, I learned a few phrases which I think always helps and my accent was the source of much amusement and we had some good laughs.
If any thing the service has probably been the best from all of our stays in the Dom. Rep.
Around the pool I would initially give the waiter who wanders around the pool (sometimes 2 or 3 of them) a dollar or 2 when I received the first drink. This service starts with pool bar open ing of 10 am. I would find I had just finished this when another drink would appear, followed by another ! . Since we are early birds, I found I had drank 3 rum and cokes plus a beer by half past ten !!
So basically whats the nitty gritty !!!
Just GO !! you will enjoy it , Nice place- lovely people- clean hotel.
A good holiday over all.

Room Tip: If you want a quieter pool upgrade to vip as this pool seemed deserted at times.

It is our first time to go for a Carribean vacation. Gladly, we have decided to book our stay at Riu Palace Bavaro to celebrate my husband's 50th Birthday and our 11th Wedding Anniversary. The check-in was very quick and very smooth -- the Front Desk staff and bell boys are very accommodating. The room is very impressive -- very clean and you have more than everything you needed (unlimited drinks, a good-sized safety box which is very important to keep your valuable stuffs while enjoying your stay with peace of mind). Having chosen the room with an Ocean View made our stay very refreshing and relaxing and gave us opportunity to have great photos just at the balcony of our room. The food and drinks are extravagantly available at breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet and their sports bar is 24 hours open. The food served at Ala Carte dinner are also excellent. Unlimited drinks at the pool bar with amazing service crews, serving you. Most importantly, WI-FI is free to keep you connected with your family while being away from home. We highly recommend RIU PALACE BAVARO to experience what we have experienced.

Just one suggestion: please have an ATM machine inside the hotel compound, preferably at the lobby of the hotel.

Room Tip: If possible at all, choose an Ocean View Room with Jacuzzi (VIP Area).

We stayed at the Riu Palace Bavaro in July. Upon arrival we were given a partial ocean view room in the adult section of the hotel which had its own pool. We really enjoyed the pool here for relaxing but could go to the more lively pool if we wanted more excitement (which we tried once then immediately went back to the quiet pool). We just wished this pool had a swim up bar. The room was very nice, clean, and spacious. Only problem we came across were the bugs. I guess this was because we were on the bottom floor but there were aunts all over the room, even saw one in the bed. The staff tried to accommodate us but there were no other rooms available in the hotel so they sent someone to spray the room with bug spray. Not the greatest first night of vacation but after that there were no more aunts the rest of the time. As for the food, we really enjoyed the buffet and thought that was the best out of all the restaurants. Even picky eaters can find something they like there. Our waitress at the buffet was so friendly and went above and beyond to provide excellent service. We deliberately sat in her section every night. All of the employees at this hotel were very nice and provided excellent service. This hotel has nightly entertainment outside followed by a DJ and dancing outside with drink service. We really enjoyed it. Went to the club one night and had a great time. Drinks are not included in the club. Overall we really enjoyed this hotel and would recommend staying here.

We spent 7 days at Riu Palace Bavaro from Oct 5th thru Oct 12th. From the first day to the last was VIP treatment and we did not reserved at the VIP section. We stayed in the Junior suite which it has a king size bed, sofa, balcony overlooking the pool, we were able to see a small part of the ocean (which we didn't mind since there was no time to seat in the balcony) jacuzzi, double bathroom sink, huge shower, separate toilet room, mini bar with a small cabinet above fill with Vodka, Domonican Rum, J@B Whisky, Gin. The minibar had Presidente beer (the best), sodas & water bottle.
The food in the Buffett was great food variety, tasty, lots of fruits, seafood, duck, chicken, beef, sushi, everything you can think off and it was very well seasoned (which we liked). The servers very attentive, taking your empty plate as soon as you finish, asking each time is there anything they could get for you. They have a Steak House restaurant, Gheisa, French, Italian which you need to reserve from 8:00 to 10 AM or so, no problems making reservations. From all the restaurants we liked the Buffett best, a lot more variety to choose from. The shows at night around 9:30 PM or so they were great, specially one call Vegas night, a Michael Jackson show, and all the others we really enjoyed each one of them. The entertainment group they keep you entertain all day and night long, with dancing, yoga, aerobics, games, they are fantastic. All I can say is Dominican people are very friendly, funny, kind, caring and this is why we keep coming back for vacation every year, so far 9 years in a row to a different resort to try as many as we can and each time is fantastic. The beach is beautiful, except that it would be perfect if the beach had umbrellas to cover yourself better from the very hot sun. It has a lot of palm trees, but they are not too full to give you good coverage, still we found some place that it was good for us. Bring plenty of sunblock (travel size). The pool is huge with a bar, whirlpool, quite a few stools to seat around inside the pool, lots of chairs with umbrellas, but we didn't go there since it was always a lot of people, very noisy, and for us we like the beach better. For those people that like the pool, they will have a lot of fun there. Also, make sure you bring quite of few $1 bills for tips, it goes a long way and they will remember what you like to drink each time. We left a couple of dollars for the maid everyday and the room was spotless, ask for extra pillow and extra blanket, got it. The air conditioning was stupendous, we like the room very cold and slept like a baby. The bed is very firm, pillows very soft, so if you have a problem with that then this resort is not for you, it didn't bother us at all.
Can't wait until next year for another paradise vacation. Hope

The Riu Palace Bavaro is a very nice resort. Check in was very quick and the staff at the front desk spoke English well. We upgraded to the VIP villas and I am so glad we did. The room was very clean and plenty big enough for the two of us. The internet was a patchy most times from the room. The safe in the room was big enough for my 16" laptop, my purse and plenty of other small items. The refrigerator in the room was stocked with water, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, 7-Up, Orange pop, club soda and Presidente beer.

The pool for the VIP units was fantastic. It was quiet and peaceful and extremely uncrowded. A crowded day at the VIP pool was when there were about a dozen people in the water. We never went into main pool but there was always an activity going on there if that's what you want to do. We preferred the calmness of "our" pool. There were always plenty of chairs and even the outdoor beds were available no matter what time of the day we wanted one. Other than peanuts, there is no food or snacks available at the VIP pool. The lunch buffet was next to the main pool. Cook outs on the beach also happened near the main pool.

The beach is amazingly beautiful. Again, there were always plenty of chairs available. All of the coconut trees provide lots of shady spots when you've had enough sun. There were people selling things on the beach but they were very quiet and polite about it. If you didn't make eye contact or gave a quick "no" nod they did not approach.

The food was okay at best. There were plenty of options to choose from so there was always something to eat, but nothing really stood out for me. The restaurants were very difficult to book and not all of them are open on the same nights. It was an inconvenience to have to keep trying to make reservations. We gave up and ate at the buffet.

We had a very nice week at this resort and would go back again as long as we could stay in the VIP section again. Those units are closest to the beach and pool and further away from the hustle and bustle of the main lobby and entertainment areas. We do not speak Spanish so there were a few times where communication was a bit difficult, but somehow we always managed to get things worked out. We went there for a quiet and relaxing week and that is exactly what we had.

Room Tip: If you are traveling without children, the VIP villas are in a great location. They are adult only a...

The resort is absolutely beautiful. The pool and beach are gorgeous. Rooms are nice and spacious. However, don't plan on sleeping in late. You hear the workers early in the AM banging around their carts and speaking in Spanish. The food is horrible. Room service options are about 4 things. Room service also tends to forget your order or just never brings it up. The towel card is just so ridiculous. If u want to eat at any of the restaurants you must make the reservation 2 days in advance (I thought this was vaca). But the staff is very accommodating near the pool and buffet etc. Front desk didn't explain anything to us. They were not very helpful. Couldn't imagine how this is a 4/5 star hotel.
