The Hard Rock Golf Course is a wonderful resort course. The course was in immaculate condition. The holes have generous landing areas and the fairways are firm, so you may actually hit the ball a little farther than expected. Fairway bunkers will be in play regardless of the tee chosen. The greens have significant undulations but the seaside paspalum does not have a lot of grain and stimped at only about nine.
It would be difficult to get in trouble off the tee but many holes have detached bunkers that can lead to misclubbing on approach shots. The "Texas Wedge" came in handy on many holes as putting up over mounds seemed more reliable than traditional wedge play.
One unusual characteristic of the course was that the long par 4s played into the prevailing winds during the week I was there. 430-460 yard par fours represented a challenge.
The 220 yard #8 proved to be the hardest hole on the course, playing into a strong wind with a moderately elevated green.
The staff were very friendly, a trait of the entire Hard Rock Hotel staff..I met the Director of Golf and new carts and rental clubs will be arriving soon. Currently, Callaway clubs are available for rent. All beverages and food were included under the Hard Rock's all inclusive plan.
I have given this course a 5* rating not because it is difficult or has beautiful vistas. If you want difficult go play Ballyliffin in the wind. If you want beautiful views ,play Kapalua Plantation. If you want too play enjoyable golf without getting beat up too badly and possibly score a little better than usual, Cana Bay/HardRock is the ideal resort course. I played 18 holes in well less than 2 hours , playing solo in the late afternoon.
