“Exactly what we wanted, better than we expected!”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

We just returned from a week at Also Del Mar. We booked the trip on a whim when it popped up on my Expedia screen. Being fair skinned and sun sensitive, we do not often vacation at the beach, but we have done all inclusive resorts in Mexico and Costa Rica. It seemed like a perfect get away after a summer filled with too many obligations and appointments. We travelled with our three children ages 16, 18, and 21.
After a quick, easy flight and a long sweaty wait in the airport immigration line, we were greeted with champagne and smiling faces at the resort. We had two junior suites which were in different buildings but fairly close. Both rooms were lovely. The kid's room faced a lagoon and had a side view of the ocean and ours was ocean front. Next time I think I would get a two bedroom suite (they have a sitting and dining area) just to have a little more space for everyone to spread out, but I think a little separation and privacy suited everyone well on this trip. We spent a lot of time on our balcony just enjoying the beautiful view.
The resort is very nice and is quiet and relaxing. We enjoyed the selection of food available in the restaurant and the beach grill.
We did visit the neighboring resort, Sanctuary, on several occasions. Their front desk was able to make change for us when ours could not, and we needed batteries and snorkel gear which we found in one of the shops. There is also a little medical office there, which was good to know. We ate at The Wok, which we thought was just ok, and The Blue Marlin, which we liked very much. Everyone was wonderful and very helpful. Our kids spent most of their time at Sanctuary. The more active atmosphere was appealing to them and the friendly staff made the feel welcome, particularly Junior, who was just wonderful. We also enjoyed the shady beach area in the hotter part of the day.
We all enjoyed exploring the lagoon beside the resort where we saw many fish in the beautiful crystal water.
The most important thing to say about this resort is that the people set it apart. I am sure there are many beautiful places to stay in Punta Cana, but I do not believe any other resort could excel at customer service like Alsol Del Mar! Every staff person we came in contact with was pleasant, hospitable, and helpful. The dining service is top notch and they will do anything they can to meet your needs. For example, one evening our older daughter was all set to have gnocchi, only to find that it was not offered that night. Edwin, our server, noticed that she was disappointed and, miraculously, the gnocchi appeared! Also, on our last day we had very little time for lunch and Santiago put together a wonderful family stye meal for us so we could catch our ride to the airport on time. These are only two small examples of the outstanding service that was such an integral part of this resort.
Our room was serviced in the morning and in the evening another maid came by to check if we needed towels or beverages. The fridge in the room was stocked with 2 beers, a coke, diet coke, and sprite, and 2 liter bottles of water. and was restocked daily. Bottled water was always available at the pool bar. Our AC was not cooling properly but after a call to the front desk it was fixed immediately.
We had such a wonderful relaxing week and wish it could have been longer! Special thanks to all the people at Also Del Mar who made it so special. Some names I do not know, but I want to recognize and thank Edwin, Confessor, Santiago, Geraldino, Jeisty, and Juan Carlos. And especially, Ezequiel, who went out of his way every day to make sure we were well taken care of and remembered that we love mango and need extra shade!. I apologize for not remembering everyone's name and I know I have misspelled some, but please know that you all made out visit so special!

Room Tip: We had 9201B and the kids had 10302B -junior suites. Next time I will request 9201 A & B as the...

We came in for a wedding. The room was beautiful with a great view! Food was great by the pool! The pool was awesome and the Staff was really nice!!! BUT, The air conditioner in our room never went below 26 degrees Celsius, which is 79 degrees! At night around 230am it would stop running as if it was controlled from outside the room, and it would get up to 28 degrees!! or 82 degrees!! We stayed Friday and Saturday Night and slept from 3am-7am on Friiday and 2am-7am on Saturday. Because the upper bedroom was so uncomfortably hot, I moved down to the couch on Saturday night at 5am where it was a little bit cooler. We left our toddler with Grandma for the weekend hoping to sleep in for the first time in a year, and no such luck. Really disappointing! The worst thing is Maintainance was sent up a couple times on Saturday morning to "fix" the AC. They need to review the Air system there. We won't be back, because on vacay, we need our sleep!

Room Tip: 5301 had an awesome view and location, but if they dont fix the AC, avoid this one!!!

I spent a week at ALSOL Del Mar with my daughter and some friends. It was without a doubt my best holiday ever. The physical resort was spectacular. The staff was outstanding. They were personable, professional, and reliable. Special mention to Mikael the entertainment director! The food was delicious with a wide and varied selection.

We stayed 5 days and from the very moment we walked in we were blown away by the incredible beauty of the place. The staff was super attentive. The prices were amazing. The view, incredible! We got a double room in building 9 - incredible ocean view, private hot tub, everything. The resort only has a couple of restaurants but you can go to the resort next door and choose from any of their 5 restaurants and it's included in the all inclusive package. In the end we ate at every restaurant and we like the Blue Marlin at Sanctuary (resort next door), and the restaurant at Alsol del Mar. If I had to choose 1, I would choose the one from Alsol del Mar. The staff was great, they all treat you like family and the food is incredible. I can't say enough good things about this place. The rooms were clean and new. We felt very welcome and can't wait to go back. It was really peaceful and relaxing. The only thing I would say is, don't go to the 'casino'. There is a casino that picks you up and takes you to their location and it's not exactly one of the high end experiences. Compared to the other things you can do there, this is not one I would recommend. We were there during their low season in July so we got an incredible deal on the all inclusive once we arrived, checked in and saw the place. It was half the price of what we had been told over the phone with the booking agent. Highly recommended. Paradise!

Room Tip: Get a room in building 8 or 9 - they have the best view and are newly remodeled.

To put our travel experience in context, let me preface this review by saying that we have been to some beautiful beach destinations over the years e.g., Turtle Island in Fiji, Taj Exotica in the Maldives, Constance Ephelia in the Seychelles and Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai. We traveled from June 30 2014-July 12, 2014. For our purposes of sunning and lounging about the pool and beach, the weather couldn’t have been better—sunny, warm days and some rain in the evening typically when we were sleeping. This was our last summer vacation before we sent our daughter to college, and she also celebrated her 18th birthday while staying at Alsol Del Mar. After a very busy senior year for our daughter, our goal was for rest and relaxation, and Alsol Del Mar certainly delivered on that front! Our daughter requested a "chill" vacation free from excursions. A few times her father and I attempted to convince her to leave the property, but she always said "why?" because she absolutely loved the property and why would she want to leave it? She did leave though to go surfing at Macao Beach with Saskya’s (hotel manager) husband and to do some souvenir shopping at the mall.

My husband and I would have to agree with our daughter. Stepping out onto our beautiful, comfortable (furnished with a dining table, sofa, two chairs, a coffee table, and jacuzzi) balcony in the mornings was always such a delight. Absorbing the beautiful sights and sounds--the ocean, the beach, and the infinity pool--was such a great way to start the day. Lounging by the pool on my comfortable chaise lounge, enjoying my favorite drink from the bar, a Chocolate Dream expertly made by Miguel and seamlessly replenished by a smiling, friendly Geraldino, I would contemplate lunch as delicious smells wafted in the air. Jean Carlos and Geraldino would bring us some of our lunch time favorites such as the seafood ceviche, chicken wings, and shrimp quesadillas. Boy, do I miss those poolside lunches!

After enjoying the day in the sun and sand, we would retreat to our two-bedroom, two and half bathroom villa with a fully equipped kitchen, dining room, and living room. The perfect set up for a family with a teenage girl who requires her privacy. One of the reasons we chose Alsol Del Mar was because of reciprocal privileges at its sister property The Sanctuary. We did have several meals at The Sanctuary--The Steakhouse, Blue Marlin, and the Wok--and much preferred dining at Alsol Del Mar. We found The Steakhouse to be mediocre and my husband and daughter found the sushi at the Wok lackluster.

To be honest, the beach at Alsol Del Mar is not the best, but they try! There are crews out there with wheelbarrows working tirelessly to clear the beach of seaweed. However, we walked to Juanillo Beach (about 5 miles roundtrip) which is pretty nice and even saw some weddings for our effort. They have sun loungers available and a bar. A nice set up, indeed!

The staff at Alsol Del Mar is definitely the best! Once we arrived, we were handed glasses of champagne, and I felt the stress melt away! Alsol Del Mar exhibits true hospitality and graciousness. Prior to our arrival, Saskya patiently answered all my annoying emails. Jean Carlos made sure we were adequately supplied with water before our walk to Juanillo Beach-- without being asked. For my daughter's 18th birthday, many, many staff members wished her a "Happy Birthday" throughout the day; at dinner, they provided her with a chocolate brownie with candles and enthusiastically sang "Happy Birthday" to her. Once she returned to her room, she was greeted with a "Happy Birthday" banner on the wall and two towel swans and her bed was strewn with flower petals. To note, we participated in the "All Under the Sun" all inclusive program, and I truly believe this is the way to go. Living in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area is very stressful, and we were totally able to destress with the help of the friendly staff at Alsol Del Mar. Thank you to everyone at Alsol Del Mar for making this family vacation so very, very relaxing especially to Saskya, Karen, Ivelicce, Geraldino, Jean Carlos, Miguel and Santiago. Saskya runs a tight ship, but her employees seem happy and it shows!

We were thinking of spending some time in the Caribbean and came across a very attractive package from this resort, all inclusive. Since the flight to Punta Cana was also direct from washington DC, we could leave at a normal time in the morning and then be bathing in the sun by early afternoon. The resort is unusual, in a positive sense,in that it has very large apartments, contrary to the generally small hotel rooms. Our apartment was over 1,000 sq ft, with an enormous terrace overlooking the ocean/swimming pool/garden area. We also had our own jacuzzi on the terrace! The attention of the staff, Miguel the pool barman, Geraldino the waiter always remembering our smallest preferences, the chef Manuel Monplaisir whose very name reflected how keen he is to try to please any palate, the always positive and energetic animator Michael, the smile and kindness of people at the reception. All in all, a very dedicated staff with extreme kindness and courtesy, food of excellent quality, great accommodations. Last comment about this resort and the overall Cap Cana development, The whole area is kept impeccably clean and well manicured. In order to facilitate movement within the various resorts and the village the community has established a standard $3 taxi fare to go any place within the Cap Cana compound. We did it and found an incredible entire village-marina, very modern, with beautiful construction, shops, restaurants. Definitely Cap Cana and this specific Al Sol resort are worth every penny.

The service was beyond amazing. The employees were friendly and more than helpful. Mikael was great. He took us around outside of the resort and assisted us with anything we needed. He helped in making the trip even better. The resort was as the pictures show, nice palm trees, beautiful pool, great scenery. The only issue we had was one of our rooms had a mildew smell and when we requested to move they said that the resort was booked though it was not. Everything else was great the other room had no issues. Quiet and relaxing resort though it is other resorts (you can visit surrounding resorts with no fee with all inclusive package) and areas to go for entertainment. I will be back.
