“Not for Americans”
Reviewed 22 January 2013

After spending time in other resorts in DR, we were not impressed with anything but the Japanese restaurant(Great staff and food). Most staff on this resort do not speak English anywhere near as good as the other resorts that we have stayed at, making it difficult to communicate. The beach bar and pool were very nice. Never had a mini bar so poor, it was warm and had just 2 beers in it and some very warm water bottles. Lobby bartender was very cold and did not seem to really want to be working there. Staff at the reception desk were almost impossible to communicate with in English. I don't want to trash this place because we did have a great time, just want to let people know that there are more American-friendly resorts out there. Just a note for the people that ranked this resort a 5 out of 5 please make it a point to tryout a few other resorts.

If you want an honest review about Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro, read this one. Or lots of others that are on here as well.

Our review was much different in the first few days of our 11 day stay at this resort, but it started to change as a few things popped up that people only staying a week may not be bothered by.

It IS a lovely resort, the grounds are nice, it's [mostly] nicely laid out, the lobby is beautiful, the beach is nice and the PEOPLE who work here are PHENOMENAL! Food is not bad considering the size and we had GREAT experiences in all 5 al a carte restaurants that we enjoyed. However, my husband was the first to express that it's just too big. And it's true. JayCart put it best when he said that Bavaro and Principe are the poor relations of this grand place. They are older, so we felt that the attention goes to the newer and more expensive areas of the property. That said, we feel we had the very best view of the entire place from our lovely room on the third floor overlooking our favourite pool and pool bar.

Because it's so big, some parts, much as they try, just cannot be 5 star. Just not possible. And the staff run ragged each and every day, and they ARE friendly. But by gosh if you ever meet one that isn't, consider the hours they work, and how hard!

We are going to offer advice. Take it if you want, which you'd be wise to do.

DO come here. But only for an upgrade, or if not, make sure you got a good deal. We did get one, and it was our honeymoon, and while it wasn't perfect, it was a lovely time and stay, considering all factors and especially the cost of it.

They LISTEN to Trip Advisor. They are reading the reviews and we saw evidence that they are working on aspects. Case in point - you will read a lot of reviews from December that the sales people were constantly bugging to see their presentation, that they would bug by the beach and pool and everywhere. We realized day 2 of our stay that they have about an 8 square foot spot in the lobby and can call out to you from there but it's as if they aren't allowed off that spot. So the choice is yours if you want to talk to them and see their presentation. We avoided it. We also know they read these reviews because many of the staff have business cards with the Trip Advisor logo on it. Also you will see that virtually all reviews are responded to. So they know what's going on and much of it they work to rectify.

We only did one day at the beach because it was really windy and really busy and we didn't enjoy it as much as the pool. We walked lots on the beach though and that was nice for us. We walked A LOT there and that's okay because it's a nice place and honestly, get up and move a bit. But if we wanted a people mover, they were available and the drivers are like everyone else - friendly and nice!

The snack bar near the beach was our choice for lunch most days and it was just fine. VERY nice nachos and gaspacho, which one reviewer had noted before we went (thank you for that!). Mi esposo also enjoyed the burgers there.

Someone else had said they could not get a buzz on their entire time. We laughed about that for a week! There is NO shortage of alcohol and the service at all bars is absolutely brilliant!

Joselo and Angel and Angel and Eddy at the lobby bar are so wonderful. Joselo was one of our favourite people by far. A genuine person, not just looking for tips. A very nice man and yes, you're right (earlier reviewer), he DOES care. Also, they make a mean bloody mary.

At the pool, we can not say enough about Randy, Francisco, Margarita, Moises and Kelvin! They are ALL a great team and a lot of fun, nice people, remember you and actually seem to care about how you're doing. Kelvin is extremely entertaining and lots of people seemed to sit at the pool bar till they had to stumble away or their lips turned purple from sitting idle in the water. We sat there one day and thereafter left it to the younger people who seemed to use it as a speed dating site (not a problem just obviously not what people on honeymoon are looking for). One word of advice though....sure take a cup. We took tim's insulated cups. But honestly they do not need to be the biggest honkingest gigantic bubba cups. To each their own, horses for courses (hubby would say), but you don't need a gallon cup. Just saying.

A La Cartes: We went to Italian, Mediteranean, Japanese, Garden Grill, and Santa Fe (tex mex). All were good and we felt the food was fresh and nice, and we didn't have temperature issues (though some of the people we met felt some of the food was not hot enough). Our favourite in the end was the Garden Grill, which was on our 11th night. We liked them all but the service we got this last night of our stay was just what we needed at that point. The steaks were also AWESOME.

The buffet was alright. But yes it is HUGE and BUSY and serves a LOT of people. The hostesses are nice (and for hubby I will say very attractive!!) and accommodating. A few days in I came to name the bank of tables along the window as "the trough". All the other tables are diagonal and nicely spaced and good. These tables however are TOO close together and lined up. One does not enjoy their dining experience when seated here. Try to avoid. Management: Would be a simple change and make such a huge difference to your guests. There is ALWAYS something to eat and they are very attentive. Jose and his "cafe and whisky" (with milk) was funny every morning. The potatoes are also very nicely done. Not a huge fan but I really enjoyed their potatoes. We liked Dominican night as well as Spanish night, and the lamb is good too. Also their CORNBREAD! We ate at least a loaf of banana corn bread one morning, never having had it before. We are going to find a recipe (or if the chef cares to share it with us....?)

We played mini-golf and walked. Mini golf was fun but could use a face-lift. The water park for the kids looks WAY fun! The animation staff, especially Alvin (is that right?) is incredible! He remembers you, has lots of costumes, and loves the children like his own brothers and sisters (his words when we said to him how good he is with them). We didn't take kids but we could see how much fun the kids were having and how this place is best suited as a family resort than a wedding one.

We had experiences with people trying to sell stuff to us too, but the excursion folks are good about saying good morning and moving on and accepting no.

We saw a bunch of weddings and noted that the one wedding venue is lovely and picturesque but a tad close to the pool and we wondered could the pool turn down the music just for the ceremony? Easily done - a waiter comes for ice and champagne from the pool bar. We felt that would be a good cue to turn down the music just a bit for a half hour. Also there are all kinds of rude people standing in dripping bathing suits watching the proceedings. We watched because we're newlyweds and saps, but we did it from a respectable distance. So when you go there, try to have some respect.

Our room was fine for sure, but we do feel that the maids are very busy and we noted that some days we didn't get things we needed or we got our water late in the day. They did a fine job though and were always very pleasant (Rosaura and Bernice).

The best part of our trip was being together, enjoying the weather (nothing like the sway of palm trees), and meeting new friends from Yorkshire. We shared some drinks at the Sports Bar and Night Club. Also one night we wanted to dine together at the buffet but we were Bavaro and they were Principe and so we had to have help from Jose at guest services to make this happen, which he did with grace and then the hostess dealt with using more humour than we saw all week! Thanks go to both of them for making that meal with new friends happen. Jose also set up our al a cartes, got us a bottle of champagne, and had a heart shaped cake arranged for our first meal. It was very lovely.

One other thing I want to say to the management is that it is SO lovely the way guests are welcomed to Grand Bahia Principe. All staff can tell when people are new arrivals and are superb and full of hearty welcome. But once we have taken the sun, we're still just as important. There were a couple of times we felt that once we weren't "new" anymore we were less of a priority in the buffet. Everywhere else we still felt like we were a million bucks.

Finally, be aware that mosquitos are real, and they like you at night. Hubby came back with a couple of real scary bites. You're radiating heat from your day so they are out for blood. Some sort of spray will definitely work. Our friends got some from the lobby shop and noted it wasn't horribly expensive. We also got rum there and it was also priced alright.

Lastly, you WILL experience belly trouble. It is all new for you, the diet, the water, all of it. Bring immodium. It will pass. And if you need to, remember the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast.)

Have a good time. The people here make it worth it. It was a good honeymoon with my best friend and partner in crime.

Room Tip: Around the pools is good if you are Bavaro or Principe. Upper floor with pool view was just lovely.

We are a family of 4 from Canada. My girls are 8 and 9 (and let me say that they had a good time, they are kids....they didn't pay for the vacation so what irritated me didn't irritate them) This resort is WAY TOO LARGE. I read this before we booked and I should have clued in. I would never ever go to a resort again that requires a shuttle to the beach. I will not go into all the logistics of this hotel because if you have been doing your research, you know that there are thousands of people here who fight for space on trolleys, space at the buffet, space at the pool, space at the beach etc. If you are not a fan of a lot of people (more specifically lots of rude, pushy, ignorant people) do not pay to stay at the Gran Bahia Principe

airport in Punta Cana - BRUTAL. I counted 8 big airliners on the tarmac when our WestJet flight landed (btw, WestJet was the best part of my vacation as sad as that is......WestJet is a fantastic airline) our tour operator was Sunquest....guess what? ONE Sunquest rep in the air terminal.....waited an hour to get to see her to find out what bus to board to get a transfer to the hotel.....unacceptable.

Check In at Gran Bahia - BRUTAL. as expected....mountains of people trying to check in...no English...no welcome drink...disorganized......

Room - average at best - BEDS ARE HARD AS BOARDS. If you are accustomed to a decent bed at home, be prepared. We never slept right all week. Its not just that the beds are hard, they are worn out too. Maid service was poor. In fact one day, the room was never even made up. (and I was even tipping)

The good? - the following aspects of this hotel were good: food, employees, ambiance, grounds, pools and beach were all good.

Keep this in mind - if you book the cheaper "Bavaro or Punta Cana" sides of this hotel....you are unmistakably the ugly step child in this resort......your bracelet colour is everything.

As much as I look back and want to remember this as a nice vacation spot....I just can't. I would never go back there, and I would never recommend it to anyone that I actually like and who I would want to enjoy their vacation........sorry, that's just the way it is

Awesome hotel, excellent service, lots of fun activities, the best show I've seen.. totally recommend this place!

My hubby really loved all the activities, everything from volleyball to golf.

Every night we went to different restaurants. Our favorite was the french restaurant.

We've been to other all inclusive hotels and this one is best by far.

Went to a bunch of excursions - swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, riding on buggies to a cave, etc.

I would not recommend going to explore the town as this is a very poor country and it is dangerous. We went out and quickly realized we need to get back to the hotel.

Decor could be updated and I hope they do so they can keep up with the current times.

We chose this resort based on the ratings received along with the price. I read both the positive and negative reviews and would like to say the resort is exactly what I expected. It was massive in size but you felt as though you were in a very safe little city with no need to leave the complex.
We had 2 couples booked together and had requested to have our rooms next to each other and on the top floor. Unfortunately even though we booked many months in advance they were not able to accommodate us. We were placed in 2 separate buildings near each other. Andy was very helpful and appeared to really try to remedy the situation but he obviously did not have the ability to fix the problem. He was very friendly and always greeted us warmly when we went to the reception area to use the computers. We appreciated his smile and made the best of the room situation because we needed to get on with enjoying our vacation.
What we loved:
-The resort was very well maintained and constantly being cleaned. The maid cleaned our doorwall and and even under the bed daily. We left her a request for our preferences in the mini bar (beer and diet pepsi) and she provided this every day!
-The beach was the cleanest of any of the surrounding beaches. Workers constantly raked up the seaweed off the beach and swept the walkways.
-Japanese restaurant and Garden Grill were our favorite. We enjoyed the fun atmosphere the most at the Japanese where they grill your food and the best shrimp ever in front of you.
-Pool areas and bars were very clean and staff was friendly. We did get up early to put towels on chairs and never had any issues.

What was less than expected:
-the gym was little more than an oversized closet with no ventilation. A resort this size really should provide a more suitable area for exercising especially with the increasing awareness for being healthy.
-food at the buffets were consistently only lukewarm. It should not be too hard to keep warm foods warm.

Tips:
-email staffing advance with your dinner preferences to get dinner times at the restaurants of your choice, they took a few days to respond but provided exactly what we wanted.
-if you like casinos take taxi to the Hard Rock, 5 min and 15 dollar cab ride and very worth it!

My fiance and i recently spent a wonderful week here for the third time and loved it!!! The transport time from the airport is only about half an hour and the drivers keep you entertained on the way to the resort :)
The lobby is large and quite impressive, and the staff at reception are always super quick at checking you in and very very friendly. The moment you check in they have two bell boys waiting to bring you and your luggage to your suite, no need to lug all your heavy stuff!
The room is very spacious and always very clean. The beds are reasonably comfortable and HUGE!! you could just keep rolling and rolling and rolling!!! The mini fridge was filled every day with pepsi, 7up, red rock ( like orange crush) beer and water. We stayed in the " royal golden" section and had room service included with a light menu. I recommend the upgrade... it also gives you more a la cartes and free internet etc.
The beach is of course phenomenal! very very cramped though and only in front of the Bahia. They dont have nearly enough beach chairs, or sand for that matter, but nonetheless, its still gorgeous.Walk five minutes in either direction and the beach widens right up. The ocean is a stunning turquoise blue and was warm as bath water! the surf can be really strong so hold on to your bikini tops girls!
The main pool by the beach by the pool is very big, but very very packed.I call it the party pool. Mostly stuffed with spring breakers. The two pools closer to the lobby were perfect! Not too cramped and more people our age (late 20's, mid 30's). Drinks were never watered down, always very tasty! The waitress at the pool had a new drink ready for us before we were finished with the last one. By day two she knew what we wanted and automatically brought it to us!! Fantastic service!!!
Food was overall great. I cant say enough about how good the BBQ restaurant and japanese were as well as the garden grill! I would avoid the fish in the buffet though, had an awful taste and texture. But everything else seemed pretty good and lots of selection.
Entertainment was pretty decent. They offered a different show every night. The staff were quick to offer and bring drinks. The lobby bar was a great place to enjoy a drink and people watch! They have a little square called the pueblo principe which consists of little shops and a casino. It also has a disco and karaoke bar which were soooo much fun!!
What stood out the most about this place was the staff. My first visit in 2009 I got to know some of the staff in the lobby. When i returned in 2011 I was shocked when I heard my name being called from across the lobby. It was my bartender friend Odalis! He remembered me two years later after dealing with thousands of new faces! He rushed to get Graciella, another bartender friend I made and i was hugged and treated like an old friend :) Amazing!!!
All in all we loved it here. We are craving something new and are trying the iberostar in the mayan next month:)

Room Tip: The royal golden upgrade puts you in villas closer to the beach and also includes room service :)

this was a second choice for my wife and I,since the other place was booked out. When we arrived we had to wait almost three hours for our room to be ready, check in time was 3pm got our room at six pm. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, for we met Joselo Ramirez at the lobby bar, he was sympathic and made us feel welcomed and comfortable. We spent a lot of our time there over the next week and he always made us and the other guests feel special. He was always upbeat and fun. Really my only complaint was that the meats except for the chicken were tough and not edible, We ate a lot of fish and chicken. the beach is nice but crowded, other then the lobby bartender i did not meet anyone else who went out of their way to make you feel at home.
