“Second year in a row at the Gran Bahia PC- great experience both years!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2009

First off, this is the second year in a row I'm staying at the Gran Bahia Principe Punta Cana. We stayed at the Punta Cana side both times. Since Punta Cana and Bavaro are identical, I'm writing my review here.

The first time I visited was with my husband in June 2008. We loved it so much last year that my husband and I decided to stay here again. This time, we went with two other couples. We had just as much fun with a group as we did just the two of us.

Take the reviews you read on here with a grain of salt. It's not as bad as some reviewers make it seem! The resort is very clean and the people who work there are very friendly. I called the resort a few days before heading down to Punta Cana to reserve a room with a king size bed. The honored my request, and upon check-in there was a note made in my profile that we requested a king size bed in our suite. Check-in was a breeze. The check-in representative was very friendly and he put us in a Golden Club room for no charge (closer to the beach). We didn't have Golden Club amenities, but who really needs a robe, slippers, and an allotted time for internet each day? Not me!

Room---Our room was clean. I must say that during my 9 day trip, I did see 2 bugs in our room. I don't remember if I saw bugs last year. I think I was more conscious of it this year after scrolling through these reviews. But it's the Caribbean- you're bound to find some bugs here and there. No biggie, in my opinion. The mini-fridge is stocked with drinks, including soda, water, and beer. We left a note for our maid asking for more agua and Pepsi Light, and our fridge was stocked full with them every day. Our maid was very nice- we left her a $2 tip everyday: A small price to pay for her hard work. I read some reviews on here about missing things in the hotel room. Let me say that my husband and I opted out of paying close to $30/week for the safe and none of our belongings went missing. Not a single item was touched or moved during both of our stays.

A la cartes-- My husband and I ate at the same 4 restaurants as last year. We ate at the Gourmet, Garden Grill (steakhouse), Japanese, and Italian. We wanted to try the seafood place and Mediterranean, but we were told they were closed during our stay. That was a bit of a bummer. So we picked the same restaurants as last year. Our favorite, by far, was the Japanese both years. Last year, however, the guy cooking our food at the Japanese was more outgoing and put on a "show" for us with the fire and mamaguana. This year, our chef only made a fire once. The food was delicious. They serve sushi, soup, tempura, the main course (fish, shrimp, chicken, beef, rice, veggies) and dessert. I was VERY disappointed that they didn't have fried ice cream this year. I can't express how mad I was! I was so looking forward to the fried ice cream. The steakhouse is excellent, as well. Great appetizer options. The Italian was our third favorite. A wide variety of delicious appetizers and great entrees. I highly recommend the Florentine-style sliced filet mignon. The Gourmet is also excellent, if you are into that sort of thing. The food was delicious, but the atmosphere is definitely swankier. 5 course meal. I highly recommend the filet mignon and the lamb chops. But I'm sure everything on the menu is equally delicious.

Buffet- If you can't find something you like to eat at the buffet, something is wrong with you! There is a huge selection to choose from for each meal of the day. Breakfast was my favorite, by far. The crepes, chocolate croissants, and omelettes were terrific.

Snack Bar- There are two snack bars. One is by the main pool and the other is on the beach. The snack bar on the beach has more to choose from. But you will find a wide array at each-- burgers, hot dogs, pizza, pasta, rice, chicken, salads, desserts, etc. We didn't find a need to go to the buffet for lunch as there was a great selection of food to choose from at the snack bars.

Pools- The water temperature in the pool could definitely be colder! The pool water is way too warm, in my opinion. That's about the only negative thing I can say about the pool. It gets so hot in Punta Cana that you need to take a dip in the beach for a refresher, because the pool water is just too warm. The main pool is where all the activities are held, as well as the swim-up bar. If you are looking to socialize or be a part of a "party scene", stay at the main pool. Adjacent to the main pool are two other pools that are just as nice, but less loud. If you are looking to kick-back and relax by the pool, I suggest you stay here. There's also a pool closer to the buffet that is a little more secluded. Not as many group activities, but you have a swim-up bar, volleyball net in the pool, and ping-pong.

Beach- The beach here is beautiful. White sand, clear water, clear skies- an idyllic Caribbean setting. Non-motorized sports are included in the price at this resort. You can go kayaking, boogie boarding, etc. There were definitely more shaded areas on the beach this year versus last year. It was tough finding sun beds under the shade last year. This year, our group of 7 headed over to the beach around 10am every morning, and we were able to find seats together under the shade everyday. The beach is very clean. You will find workers coming around very often picking up plastic cups and other litter. There is a lot of seaweed later in the afternoon, though. I'm not sure if this is something that can be remedied, but if it can- I would hope the resort would make more of an effort to take care of it. There are plenty of activities you can engage in on the beach. You will also see people coming by trying to sell you on ATV tours, parasailing, scuba diving, etc. They are not bothersome at all. They don't hassle you. They just walk by offering their services. FYI: If you are going to go parasailing, don't take your digital camera with you (even though they tell you its fine). Our friends took their camera with and they fell in the water before landing on the boat, and needless to say, their camera was ruined!

The price for this resort is great for the quality. The resort isn't ultra-luxurious, but it's top-notch. Well worth every penny! My husband and I went here two summers in a row. I will definitely stay here again in the future. We had a blast!!

This was my first Punta Cana trip, and i loved it, the resort, the locals and everything else. I went with my girlfriend. Animation, big pools and an OUTSTANDING beach, with the typical caribean warm water.
The Resort is enormous, with a very good service in the overall, however for those who don't speak spanish, i strongly recomend that you should know the basics. I'm Portuguese and i didn't have any trouble speaking with them.
As you go on the resort streets, most of the employees that you pass by they give you a pleasent hello (Hola), and they are always singing and dancing with the sounds of local music.
In the buffet the service could improve a little bit, but in the overall it's a very good service comparing with other hotel's/resort's. The service in the other restaurants is better, mainly because thei'r not so crowded.
But the very best of a trip to the Caribean are the warm water beach's and the striking sun. The pools are very big, but imagine how hot the temperature in the pool were. In the caribean sea the water temperature was around 28ºC, and i thing in the pool it was around 34ºC. if you want to get cooler only with several mojitos, mamajuana (tipical drink, they called it the dominican viagra) coco loco, piña colada's, etc...
If you get bored off to many beach time, you can go to the hotel spa's, or to a mini golf course.
At night you can go to the disco, or to the theater and watch a show. On Monday's there's a very interesting Michael Jackson show.
If you want to go shopping, you can go 2km along the beach and you'll find a place to buy some paintings (their beautiful) or some cigars and drinks. Do not forget to bargain every prices.
Inside the resort there are two shuttle routes, and it's a very pleasant way to travel inside without the long walks. :)
The rooms are very big, and i choosed one with a bigger bed (2x2mts), they have air condicioner and a big fan. I can recomend you to turn off the AC at night and use only the fan. It's much less noisy. The bathroom is quite big as well, and it has a jacuzzi.
I recommend this hotel to everyone.

We went on March Break from March 14th - 21st for our first family vacation with myself and my wife and 2 kids (ages 10 & 13). We have been on other trips to all inclusive, but not with the kids.

Don't Go - don't like walking, want 5 star food, dislike crowds, don't want kids playing around you.
Go - if you prefer the beach, if you prefer the pool, want to stay in a large self-contained resort, clean and comfortable rooms, want friendly staff (if you speak Spanish it would be even better), like to walk the beach for literally miles.

Punta Cana was beautiful and we look forward to going again, but we will not be going to the Bahia Principe.
Rooms:
The television had all major US channels and the minibar was always stocked. We left a couple bucks daily along with requests for additional towels, and extra beer/water for the minibar, which we always add. The one negative I would offer about our room was the balcony view it offered. I would call it the Jurassic view!!! We stayed in a room that bordered the northern tip of the Bavaro property and the view was that of a swamp. We did have a great location though. We were very close to the pool and half way from the beach and from the main lobby as well, which was a lot more important to us than the view. Overall the room great!

Restaurants and Bars:
Included in our 7 day stay was the choice of 3 a la carte restaurants. We selected the Japanese, Gourmet and the third was selected for us  . All three were excellent with wait staff that is extremely attentive and hard working.
The buffet restaurant was the most boring I have ever seen. Each night had a different theme but, no winners there.

Beach/Pool/Grounds:
Both the beach and pool areas were fantastic. We spent the majority of our time on the beach (white sand and an amazing view…sunken ship!). There were a couple bars stationed easily accessible from the beach, perfect to top up your beer or to get one of my favorites…margaritas!
The days we did go to the pool were quite enjoyable as well. The bottom line is that wherever you live….you probably had access to a pool. Why not get to the beach and enjoy it? To each their own though…

Overall....... the resort was right on!! But way tooo big.....!! USE the trolleys that take you every where!!! Make sure you book your a la carte the same day you arrive!!!! Reception staff not really helpful... not happy,, not smiley... Just there........ Lobby bar staff really nice and smiley!!

Getting there:
We went seven of us and left from Ottawa, Canada. We booked with Signature Vacations and had Major issues with our seat on the plane…… don’t pre-pay with signature. Our rep: Jean Luc was really helpful and had answers to every question we had.

A la carte restaurants:
Make sure to book your A la carte restaurants because we booked them the second day and ALMOST did not get any of what we wanted! (That’s why it would have been nice to have met our rep. on the first day! so make sure to meet with your rep!!!! VERY imp!!!!)

Souvenirs:
Careful when you try to bargain with the guys in the little I don’t know how you call that! We found them PERSONALY REALY annoying!!!! YES they are on the resort!!!! Then they were only in the little scare where the casino, karaoke (realy funny!) and house band plays............ Make sure to bargain!!! Some guy wanted 10 000 pesos total for a few gifts we wanted and we ended up paying 1000 pesos for it!! WOW!!! he even took out a picture of his kids.................... My gooooooooood!!! Sometimes it’s just cheaper to just by it at the little stores!! at least they don’t BUG you!!!

The hotel is very nice but the service is not worth it.

The hotels favorite word is NOOOOO that can not be accomidated. They do not go the extra mile to make sure you are happy.

I called two weeks before my trip to request my room be fixed up with a bottle, fruits and chocalate for my wifes anniversity. They promised me the world on the phone. They finally fixed my room on the 5 day of my staty and i got the bottle and chocalate on the last night. This is after 2 phone calls to the front desk per day and a sit down discussion with the head of the front desk.

Reservation for the special restaruants are a nightmare and when you do get in you will notice that even though they told you that it was booked solid there are 50% of the tables empty.

They make it hard for you to eat at the special restaruants and try to always push you to the buffet. The buffet is not bad just not really that good quality food.

This was my third trip to punta cana and my first and LASTstay at this hotel.

This Hotel is no doubt beautiful, although a tad confusing on your first niight due to there being 2 different sides, but it litrally only takes the one night to get to grips with it. There are so many staff at this place and everything is crystal clean no complaints there attall!! and they are also very nice and never rude to you.

The entertainment was really good however we didnt get to see many shows as i got ill ( more later) but really engertic and you can have a good laugh. There is a little mini town place on sight which i thought was really good, you had a casino althought they charge you for drinks which is a bit annoying as walk outside and you can get them for free, however this may have been because they had branded alcohol such as Sminoff vodka, and you do get a very genrous helping!! but casino was good unless you have a bf who is not very good at losing, you also have lots of shops which are extremley expensive but as you can't really leave the resort you have no choice. (Lobby shop a big bag of crisp $10, 20 fags $9 etc) then you have the very very annoying market stalls and believe me you get hassled they try to be nice to you and give your 'free' stuff and then expect you to buy somthing we got done on the first night eneded up with 2 necklaces and some $10 earings after that we just made up exuse after exuse!! then you have another stage with a house band the music is mostly spanish which can be a little boring if your english as it can start sounding the same.!! however in the piano bar it was american independance day and they was blasting out snoop dog and other artists so that was good! then you have the disco.. only open from 12- 2 which was a ,little annoying great however again just loud spanish music and everyone is salsa dancing, again if your english a bit strange as our clubbing scene isn't like that.

Now as for the food we were informed that the buffet food was the same as the A la cartes, so when the bf didnt bring full length trousers we didnt think it would such a big deal eating in the buffet as the only pair of trousers were $60, we were wrong the buffet was ok it didnt really agree with us, and not very nice when thay have an actual pig and an actual fish next to eachother on plates and you just go and 'cut' a slice off. We then got told by our english friends that the a la cartes were really really good!!! so make sure you book them up because the places go!!

Definalty do the exursions other wise you just in a holtel we only got to do one as i got sick, and OMG the doctor will try and get the most amount of money he can from you!! so take plently of your own medication. We did manage to do the outback saffrai and it is sooooo good was the best part of the holiday loved every minute you really get to see what the Domnican Republic is like.!!

I would go back to the domnican this time prehaps with friends as can get bit well boring just 2 of you, i would like to try a different hotel as there are loads to choose from and i will never go with FIRST CHOICE they are an absloute shambles, delayed flight, no t.v on plane, ridiclous price for holidays our english friends paid the same price and got 2 weeks we got 1! anyway it is worth going to, and make sure you pick up a bottle of mamajuana!!!

Good swimming pools, nice animation.
Very large hotel. Good transport service
Excellent restaurants
Nice service and staff, but do not forget to give some tips

But, you have queues for everything, even for meals (incl. breakfast)
It is hard to get a free place near the pools. At 8:00 you have towels marking all places.

I suggest this hotel, but you should be patient or you should choose one of the private areas of the hotel, that allows you to choose private pools and restaurant areas.

We recently returned home from a WONDERFUL trip to Punta Cana for our friend's wedding. The wedding was amazing and the Wedding Coordinator was Great! Photographer was Great too. The HOTEL MANAGER was at the Bride and Grooms dispense at all times. I have been to a few weddings at destinations in Mexico AND in Punta Cana at other resorts and this was the most organized and best wedding by far. The Bride and Groom had so many options and the dinner and reception were a blast. We went till 1:30 a.m.

The Food at this resort was amazing. There are 7 ala Cart restaurants. Mexican, Japanese, Steak houses, Italian Eateries, Seafood, BBQ and French. The BUFFET was great too.. Such a great selection from Chicken tenders and fries and Pizza to Pasta and bbq'd chicken and steaks and salads. Fresh Eggs and Omlettes in them morning with a variety of fresh breads and cheeses and fruit at all times.

The Rooms were very clean and our maid was great. The fridge was always stocked and plenty of towels. Other's had issues with their maids but ours was great.

The Market - if you are told to pay $200 for a necklace and you pay it, your an idiot. Youhave to barter.. Remember.. as a rule they barter extremely high and you have to barter extremely low. I bought a necklace, bracelet and earring set. He wanted $260 American for it. I offered him $10 and I got hit for $20. DONT GET RIPPED OFF!

The SERVICE - IF you tip, you'll have great service. If you dont then you'll have crappy service. Its like this at all destination resorts though.. your not going to get away from it. If you ask for something and they dont want to do it they will use their language barriere as an excuse for everything.. But if you ask a second time with a $5 then it's amazing how one can learn english in 4 seconds flat.

NIGHT LIFE - GREAT TIMES HAD BY ALL! Kareoke bar, Disco.. Casino.. Great times.... Great drinks.. dancing... FUN TIMES!

Overall this place was great... We would definately go back!
