Hotel Riu Palace Punta Cana
Ranked #69 of 112 Hotels in Punta Cana
Reviewed 3 December 2013

Recently we went to the Riu Palace Punta Cana, on Friday November 29, 2013 at one thirty in the morning. A hotel employee, entered our room with a key and gained access while we were sleeping. I awoke to him suddenly and woke up my husband who then must have startled him.
My husband is a big intimidating man with lots of tattoos, approached this man and he claimed
he was sent from the front desk, he had no name tag on. Again there are no inside locks. (dead bolt or chain link) any one can gain access at anytime from the outside. Be extremely careful, do not use this resort chain. We informed the front desk, who said to us that there security has been compromised, and would look into this, we have not heard back.

Room Tip: Choose a hotel that has inside locks, that no one can access from the outside.

My husband and I have celebrated many of our anniversaries at RIU all inclusive resorts and been extremely pleased but this resort ruined the RIU experience for us. We arrived after check in time and was told it would be another 30 minutes. Finally after 2 hrs, we were allowed to go to our room. The room was nice but in need of repair. The ceiling had water damage and the tub had Sheetrock puddy caked in it from someone doing a very poor repair job. The shows were good but not of the quality we were accustomed to. Pools were in great need of repair as well. We ventured down to the other RIU resorts, all 5 are in a row on the same beach. I would highly recommend staying at the Bavarro or Macaow. They were very nice and up to date. We met many people who booked there but got bumped to our "palace" but I can tell you they did not get any upgrade. Also there are several hidden fees that you are forced to pay at check out. Never experienced this before at any other all inclusive.

We just returned from a week at the RIU Palace Punta Cana and could not have been happier. It was, without a doubt, a beautiful holiday - one of the best ever! There really is nothing to complain about at all. The lobby is beautiful, the hotel grounds are impeccably kept with fountains and shrubs and palm trees. The pool is wonderful with a great swim-up bar. And, of course, the beach in Punta Cana is one of the world's best!

The food was amazing - we arrived on November 23 in time for a buffet lunch - everything imaginable including scallops, mussels, smoked salmon, fish, chicken, beef, an incredible salad bar and desserts. We could not believe the presentation at the buffet and it continued all week.

The specialty restaurants were amazing - the fusion restaurant was probably the best, but we tried the steak restaurant and the Japanese which were both incredible.

We didn't attend any shows in the evening - all day in the sun and we were in bed early. But we didn't leave the resort all week - it was so perfect that we just stayed around. We did walk to the RIU Macao to go to the Casino a couple of times but that was it.

We probably had 30 total minutes of rain the entire week - 5 minutes here and there and then full sun again. One night it rained overnight but cleared completely by 9 AM.

Our room was lovely and a well stocked mini-bar - lots of towels, facecloths, and amenities.

Really an amazing resort. We will definitely be back!!!

just back from a recent stay at this hotel stayed at many riu hotels in the past and never faulted them says its a palace not this one apart from the poolside and the poolside bar staff and the other couples we met it was awful.on check in staff didn`t really know what was going on and tried to lure you into the lobby bar as they knew full well your room wasn`t even ready it was 4pm in the afternoon and we went to our room in and saw it in the past guests state.the room looked like nothing we had seen online it was old and dated smelt musty and there was cockroaches in the wardrobe, we asked to be moved as the hairdryer and sockets didn`t work properly in the room reception just laughed and said it wasn`t possible until a few days lived out of a suitcase until 3 days into our holidays we were finally moved FOC to a room overlooking fountain which was a lot better everything worked except ghds so finally we thought we would have a good time. eating in the buffet retaurant was a bit manic dirty tablecloths from previous guest just the glasses and cutlery changed and could have done with hand sanitisers on the door, private beach very unkept and a la carte restaurants couldn`t be bothered with the food or service on the later sittings stayed in at riu cancun mexico, touareg boavista twice and guarana portugal twice and had a lovely time and would return tomorrow and thought id have the lap of luxury and try a palace never a palace 7 years old more like 27 years old and will not be returning the macao down the road was beautiful wish we had stayed there.

Just came back from a 10 day stay at this resort. It's was our third time there!
The premises are very clean everywhere.
The service was excellent with the exception of the pool bar where the service and quality of drinks was very inconsistent from one time to the next.
The food at the buffet was enjoyable and very well presented. Nothing special about the a la carte restaurants.
The beach is very wide, clean with lots of palm trees to provide shade. The ocean can be a little rough at times.
The pool, although we did not use, was well frequented with lots of loungers and parasols.
Free WiFi everywhere is appreciated.
The lobby, lobby bar, buffet and restaurants are all non-smoking.
Live band on the Plaza after supper and before the nightly show.
Overall very enjoyable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool and closest to the beach.

An outdated Hotel of 7 years build. Requires an extensive overhaul and TLC.
On arrival to the resort your initial views are stunning of the RUI complex and neighbouring hotels. "Don't be fooled". Walking into the grand - dull, dark reception area the magnificent decor is regrettably over looked, so was I by the receptionist staff. Must have been the fastest booking in, in history. No welcome drink, just an envelope with room keys. "That's it!!!!!" Walked to our room asking along the way for directions. I now realise why there was a laugh and smile from their directions, they must have been treated the same. Oh well, consistent if nothing else. Staying on 3rd floor - no problem!! But lift out of action, elderly with wheel chairs and frames really struggled. I did manage to have a look in the lift. A long electrical live lead was dangling from the main control switch. " Not Good". From other review comments - the room smelt musky. Again, opened patio doors, no issue. Room very clean ... And was kept clean throughout the stay. TV for English viewing - forget it!!!.
Poolside had plenty of sun beds, some good and some bad. But the staff were brilliant..The views all around the pool looking towards main reception area and looking the other way out to sea were stunning.
Entertainment during the day by the animation team was continuous. From aqua aerobics to darts, volleyball etc etc. Well done you guys always had time for a chat and a smile!!! Evening entertainment was mixed from cabaret to circus acts and game shows. Passed the time away with some good laughs.
Main buffet eating area was plentiful to suit all eating needs with theme culinary evenings daily.
The a la carte restaurants were in different based on which timed sitting you would attend. Noticeably the early sitting of 1830 was always full than that of 2030/2100.
Drinks were watered down , a comment made by all persons I met.
Trips are plentiful but expensive to suit all tastes. Do, your homework first and price up the best deals.
Of note... Neighbouring Palace hotels will not allow you to have drinks using your wristband in their bars... Apparently this is "Rui" policy. Mmmmmmmm!!!!!

Finally - a big thank you to all staff, minus reception. It is they who are giving the Hotel a Good name with there arduous work, never ending smiles and continuous efforts to make your stay a pleasant one. " Take Note RUI management"

Room Tip: Don't ask!!! We asked to be moved... Reception said no!!! Or pay an additional fee.
