“Perfect everything!”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

This is our 3rd time traveling to the Dominican Republic. This was our first time at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. We stayed on the Adults only side. We ate at mostly restaurants for the duration of our trip. The rooms are very spacious and beautiful. Very clean with beautiful decor. Every balcony comes with a hammock which was nice to use in the mornings. The beach is beautiful! One of the reasons we picked this resort (not only for it's great reviews) was because of the reef right in front of it. We spend hours snorkeling. Lots of beautiful tropical fish. We even swam further and encountered a barracuda! Pretty scary looking fish but harmless to humans.
We enjoyed our stay very much.
The only con.... the extremely pushy time share people. They try to lure you in with an advertisement for a $1000 dollar gift. My parents unfortunately were scammed by these people and bought time shares, only to later find out that they could only use them at certain times of the year and if you wanted to book a trip you would have to book it at least 2 years in advance. Anyways just a warning.
Amazing resort.

Just returned from a one week stay at the Royal Catalonia ... with a group of Friends (7 couples)
If you are looking for an Adult only, quiet resort ... this is the place for you ..
All the activities were at the sister resort Catalonia Bavaro ... which we did have privileges
From the lobby to the beach is no more than a five minutes walk...
Beach had plenty of lounge chairs and lots of shade ... (you might want to save some lounge chairs though ... there were still many available at 10am so you don't have to rush down at sunrise unless you want the beach front) .... pool chair went pretty quick but I didnt spend any time at either pool ... they were both great though ...
Meals were delicious ,,, and the best part .. no reservations required ...
We typically had dinner around 7pm ... no waiting and service was great ...
Shout out to Freddy Number 1 .... Freddy Krugger at the Rodeo Steakhouse ... he was the best server I have ever met ...
Front desk ... Breney, Hector and Daysi ... ask and you shall receive ... all were very accomodating and pleasant
Piano Bar ... Jorge ... Service with a smile .... if you were standing at the bar for more than 5 seconds ... he would be there asking if someone has looked after you ...
Beach Service ... if you didn't want to walk to the beach bar ... which was not very far ... Zuleiny and Hector were willing to bring your drinks to you ...
Rooms were excellent ... I asked for more pillows (choice of what kind of pillow too! ... Pillow Menu!) and a mattress pad from the front desk crew ... delivery to my room was within 30 minutes.
Housekeeping had our rooms made up before noon everyday ...
Food ... again it was excellent .... we tried the Italian, Japanese, Steakhourse (twice), Grand Buffet on the other resort, Thalassa and Sea Blue on the Royal side ...
Grand Buffet was extremely clean for its size and number of people parading though ...
Beach BBQ (Thursday night) on our side ... was nothing special ... it had rained that night so they may have toned it down ....
The men wearing long pants rule seemed to only apply on the Royal side ... no one was turned away at the restaurants on the Catalonia Bavaro side ... but at Thalassa and Cata Tapas .. yes for sure ... Ladies ... casual is fine ... just no beach wear ...
Like the title says ...if you are here to relax ... this is the place ... so my review is also based on someone who likes to chill and is not a food critic by any means ... I was pleased with all the services I received and would definitely return to the Royal Catalonia ,,,,

Room Tip: Building 36 and 38 had very "opened" concept design .... showers were in the middle of the...

This hotel is generally of good standard but suffers from inconsistencies with services provided for a 5* hotel. We had made many trips around the world so are in a good position to know what to expect. This is an adult only hotel but unfortunately many of the restaurants and facilities are only available within the sister hotel which is a very large complex, very full when we where there and lots of families with children. If you choose an adult only hotel then that's what you are looking for, you are wanting to share with a lot of families and their children.
The restaurants on site are of good standard but at times the waiting is too long and the food average. Breakfast was poor, especially the a la carte, their view of scrambled eggs was to fry your eggs then chop them up. There are very few facilities on site but the 2 pools are good, except of course the swim up bar at one pool which becomes a watering hole for loud, rude and drunk americans on vacation. (nothing new in the Caribbean). There is no means to change money on site but there is a very small bank at the sister hotel but the queues are long and everything is in triplicate so takes loads of time. The gym is very poor. The size is very small, the equipment is dated and 2 machines were broken and one was dangerous. The beach was great however with loads of palm trees giving shade from the mid day sun. If you want real service, great facilities and good food spend a little more and go down the road and stay at Excellence.
This hotel is overpriced for what you get!

Room Tip: Stay away from blocks 18 and 19. 39, 40, 41, 42 are good. Ask for a view onto the pools or spa

My husband and I went to this resort with 5 other friends, 2 of whom were celebrating their birthdays. The rooms were large, clean and for the most part well maintained (apart from a few cracks in the bathroom mirror, and a bathroom door that would not completely close). The food was very good, particularly the breakfast buffet. It should be noted that when you stay here, you have complete access to all the facilities of the family-friendly Catalonia Bavaro Beach next door, but those who stay there cannot come over to the Catalonia Royal Bavaro. This is important since once the screaming kids and rowdy spring breakers get on your nerves, you can always escape to the quiet of your adults-only facility. Room service was quick and efficient. The room fridge was always well stocked (including beer). The piano bar was open until around midnight.

2 minor irritations:
1. We agreed to a "free one hour tour" of the facilities when approached by a "concierge" only to find out it was actually a THREE-PLUS HOUR sales pitch to join the Catalonia Executive Travelers program. Everyone was nice enough, but really...no means no.
2. We pre-paid for arrival and departure airport transfers through Viator. When the driver picked us up on the day we were leaving, our vehicle was held at the gate by the guards. 2 men, who can only assume were part of the resort's "official airport transfer group" harassed our driver and would not let up until I presented my voucher for the transfer. Are we not allowed to book outside transfers?

Room Tip: I would choose a room away from the main pool areas as these can get a bit noisy.

This was our second trip to the Dominican but the first to this resort. Its a short ride on good roads from the airport, its a small adult only resort (255 rooms). The service was very good, the food was excellent in the Tapas & Main restaurant. Premium alcohol was available at every bar. We rented the beach cabana and Jeison took excellent care of us. We have visited many adult resorts in the Caribbean and this definitely ranks up there. We will be back.

We stayed at this beautiful resort from February 28 - March 14, 2014.

This resort is very beautiful, the employees are wonderful and friendly, food was great, the accommodations were nice! What more could you ask for in a vacation destination? Oh yes…did I mention that it is Adults Only!

The main restaurant was the Thalassa. Breakfast was served buffet style in addition to great menu options.

Some of the wonderful and friendly staff are: Risswy, Dominga, Julia, Grisaidy, Anabel, Helen, Jorge, Riguard, Stalin, Angelica, the Carlos’, Juan, Yinna, Ernesto and many other great staff whose names I unfortunately did not write down. Jenny our favourite concierge was very helpful. The housekeeping staff were very efficient. Sabina was our daytime housekeeper and we also had excellent evening service by a wonderful lady whose name I unfortunately do not know.

Lunch was served at the Thalassa Restaurant, the Sea Blue Snack Bar which was close to the beach and the infinity pool; and the Sorrento Pizzeria which served great salads and pizza by the Thalassa pool. These were restaurants with great menu options. You could also order paella at an “alfresco area” on the beach.

Dinner was served at the Thalassa Restaurant, Sea Blue, Cata Tapa Restaurant (lovely glass building on the water) and the Tao Cat Asian Cuisine which is by the Thalassa pool (it is the Sorrento for lunch).

The staff works tirelessly so you will see them working for breakfast at the Thalassa, lunch at the various restaurants and also at dinner at the various restaurants. They are always friendly, helpful and “excelente”!

You are also able to go to the family resort next door (Catalonia Bavaro Golf & Casino Resort). We ate at the Toscana Italian Restaurant 3 times for dinner which we quite enjoyed. We did not try the Mexican restaurant or the Japanese restaurant. We did try the Rodeo restaurant once, which was ok….but you just can’t beat Alberta beef! We did try the main buffet once for breakfast and the beach buffet twice for lunch. We preferred the restaurants on our side.

The landscaping at both resorts are wonderful! The groundskeepers do a very good job at keeping everything looking so beautiful!

Golfing – there are 2 golf courses that you have access to. The Catalonia Cabeza de Toro Golf Club, which is the 9 hole course at the resort next door. There is also the Catalonia Caribe Golf Club which is the 18 hole course. They will pick you up and take you there. It is about 3 miles away.

If you want some pampering, ask the concierge about the Royal Essence package. You can rent a private cabana on the beach. It comes with a king sized bed, loungers in the sun, massages, and a private waiter for the entire day (9:00 am – 6:00 pm). It is wonderful. We had Jeison. He was fabulous. He will get all of your food and drinks for you for the entire day. You also received a bottle of champagne. We enjoyed mimosas in the cabana. It was very relaxing. Then he took us over to the massage cabana where Martha and Antonia awaited for us. After our massages we had a wonderful freshly made fruit smoothie. Worth every penny!

Cons – People on the property selling timeshares / vacation club. People going up and down the beach (not resort staff) bothering you by trying to sell massages, excursions, etc.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff. They are friendly, hard-working, attentive group. They attempt to get to know your names and what you like. They also try to communicate in English, so you should try and learn some Spanish.

We are very confident in referring our friends and family to this resort. We will definitely be back!

Landed in Punta Cana, paid $10 each for our temporary Visa and was herded through customs.
We then snatched our luggage from the baggage claim and made our way to our transportation
company's booth that we booked through Expedia. It took 25 minutes on good roads and we were there at the Catalonia Royal Bavaro.
The grounds were well kept and very clean. You could tell that the staff took great pride in their jobs, keeping the resort looking pristine throughout. I was greeted with a drink and made my way to the front desk where I meet Daisi with an "I". She was helpful from the start getting us checked in, and our room, (a deluxe suite) ready for us.
We had lunch at Thalassa the restaurant just off the lobby, The food was good but not over the top. We never tried dinner here as our stay just wasn't long enough. After lunch we were taken to our room via golf cart and helped with our luggage. The room seemed ok for the value but it faced away from the pools and main grounds of the Royal side in which we were staying.

We changed out of our travel gear and made our way down the walkway past the fountains, through the laid back infinity pool area, and to the beach. Wow! the beach was awesome!
It faces the east, and I found out later, is an amazing place to watch the sunrise. I was still feeling a little disappointed with our room and decided to go back to check on what room upgrades would be available.
Once again Daisi was very helpful. To my surprise a pool suite room was available. I was shown the room and negotiated a upgrade fee. These rooms are simply off the chart. Large deck with table and chairs, two lounge chairs with umbrella and drink tables. Private infinity pool. The room was two story with the bed and additional 1/2 bath upstairs. The wall of windows went from the first floor too the second floor ceiling and had auto curtains. The walk in shower, large jetted tub and sitting room where located on the 1st floor. I thought it was well worth the fee. The room also faced the grand infinity pool. The room truly made our stay a little extra special.
We had room service all but one morning so we could enjoy breakfast on our deck. The food was very good and delivered from 30 minutes to 1 hour from the time of our call. We ate at the Japanese restaurant once and Casa Tapa twice for dinner. Both were good but Casa Tapa took the prize in my opinion for the best restaurant we were able to eat at.

The room was kept well with special touches like fresh flowers and animal like folded towels. The resort was laid back and quiet. The drinks where always available and tasty. The staff was friendly and accommodating and always smiled when listening to my bad Spanish.

I would recommend This resort to Couples that need a get away!
