We stayed at the Catalonia Royal from February 16-23. Had a fantastic stay.

Food
Ate at the Mexican, Japanese, Sea Blue, Rodeo steak house and Buffet.
Great good. The Sea Blue was our favorite with grilled caribean lobster available.

Room
Room was great and was always cleaned. The only downside was the bed matress was way too hard.

Resort
If you plan on a nice relaxing stay without noise I would recomend the Catalonia Royal adults only side. The Bavaro side is much more noisier and has a more party like atmosphere.

Entertainment
We found the entertainment to not be so good. The shows are much the same as any of the other resorts we have been to in Dominican.

Tips
-order the banana mamas they are made with real banana
-internet is available for free on the royal side
-Sea blue was one of our favorite restaurant for lunch
-get your towel on a lounge chair to reserve your spot early
-try snorkelling on the royal side. Not many fish but some near the sunken pipe
- buy your rum and souvenirs on site as they are cheaper than the airport (if you walk down the beach there is also local shops that you can barter with)
- Try the wood fired pizza on the bavaro side(very good)

My husband and I just returned from 7 glorious days at the Catalonia Royal.....we were relucant to travel to the Dominican in the past, but now after staying at this resort in Punta Cana, we look forward to travelling to this beautiful area again.....as others have stated....it was really hard to find anything negative......we stayed in a deluxe suite,( would highly recommend that choice, for the difference in the $$, it was so worth it) in villa 38, overlooking the infinity pool....on arrival, a banner wishing us a "Happy Anniversary" was on our front door, a nice touch to begin our 7 days of celebration.....the room was wonderful....it was like staying in an exclusive hotel....a four poster bed with a canopy, a walk in shower with dual shower heads, tons of hot water every day, cozy soft towels, and a large area to get ready in......the fridge was stocked daily, and the room had those wonderful carribean touches, animals made with towels and fresh red flowers surrounding all of the works of art, changed daily. We requested a dehumidifer and we found it to be most helpful in taking out any unwelcome moisture......
The food was amazing, we only had one bad meal in the main restaurant, but breakfast there every morning was great...lots of variety....we enjoyed the Italian restaurant twice, try the spinach fetticine and the lasanga...the staff everywhere could not be more friendly.....Wanda at the main restaurant was extremely sweet and then of course, Armstrong Ruiz at the Sea Blue was so friendly and very professional.......we enjoyed the fish and chips there.......and the double chocolate warm cake for dessert.....we had dinner at the steak restaurant once and it was very good, the steak wasn't an appealing colour, but it tasted good....at the "cowboys" were quite entertaining.

The beach was amazing, tons of chairs for everyone....the boys at the beach bar were always helpful, I finally found a drink I loved, ask for a Coco Loco made with a fresh banana, amazing if you enjoy a creamy drink.....beach towels were always in your room each morning and you could ask for extras at the front desk...it was nice staying somewhere were you didn't have to put a deposit on a towel, worried that you would pack it in your luggage on your return home......

The weather was amazing, one afternoon it rained for about an hour, but it was over as quickly as it started......

Transportation to and from the airport was very organized, just be prepared to have a bit of a wait on your exit from Toronto as well as leaving from Punta Cana.....make sure you also have your $10.00 US entry fee on arrival per person, as well as $20.00US per person when leaving...

The only negative comment I can make is, it would be helpful to have more washrooms available down at the beach.....two per "sex" just wasn't enough at times....

This trip was a wonderful experience for us and we would highly recommend both Punta Cana and especially this all inclusive adult resort, it truly was "Royal"

Spent 2 enjoyable weeks at the Catalonia Royal.

By far the best food and service at any of our all-inclusive experiences. Breakfast is mostly buffet with a lot of choices, but lunch and dinner on the Royal side were all a la carte with table service. We ate almost every lunch at Sea Blue by the pool/beach, which had lots of great selections and good service. Had one lunch at the buffet on the Bavaro side, which was fine, but if I had to eat lunch there everyday for 14 days, I would have been thoroughly tired of it. Dinners were mostly at Sea Blue (great lobster and grilled fish) and Thalassa, the main restaurant (with even more selection, good food and good service). Tried the Tapas (not so impressed) and the Japanese on the Bavaro side, which was okay - I think it depends on your chef - some are more performers than others.

The wine at all locations is the same and is terrible. You can order a la carte bottles of wine, but at a charge.

The bar by the Japanese restaurant was our favourite for an evening drink - lovely setting and lovely service and worth the walk over. The piano bar on the Royal side was not so inviting. The service at all restaurants and bars was the best we have experienced - not only friendly, but professional, and caring about the service. Hostesses were all also great and tended to be the most helpful when trying to learn a bit of Spanish since they seemed to be the most bi-tri-quatri lingual, although lots of the waiters and bartenders also spoke many languages.

A bit (at least) of Spanish will help immensely in getting what you want if the item is not on a menu - for example, if you want a liqueur with your coffee, it will often be brought with the liqueur in the coffee unless you learn how to say you would like them separately. The staff who had enough english or french to help us with translation were great and we had a lot of fun learning a tiny bit of a new language. Without any spanish it is absolutely possible to order and communicate (in many languages - english, french, german), but we found it more fun to try to learn.

Our room was very nice. We were on the third floor of one of the newer buildings (38) looking south towards the glamorous swim up suites. The power went out often at the resort, which affected water supply, but it was always brief. A flashlight is recommended for night-times. The one funny thing was that to get into and out of the supposedly relaxing and romantic soaker tub in the room required the agility and flexibility of and olympic athlete. Having used the courtesy room on our last day, it seems the design in the older buildings is better for that.

The beach was gorgeous and there were always chairs to be found. With the exception of one very windy day, the water was calm enough to just float around on your back. There was some floating sea grass, but not too bothersome. The pool with the pool bar was always livelier, the pool near the beach was quieter.

We had a few minor issues with the room that were dealt with promptly and professionally. With the exception of one, the front desk staff is the most friendly, professional and accommodating of any previous experiences with all-inclusives. Our only really negative experience was with a bunch of 40-somethings on a weekend party pass (fellow guests) who were so loud, obnoxious and rude that they managed to clear an area on the beach as everyone moved away from them, then managed to clear the restaurant. Not to say this place is not for fun and a party, but come on!

Overall, this resort is great. We would happily return for the food, service, room (if we got one like the one we had) and beach/ocean, and would recommend it to friends and family.

We recently returned from an amazing 7 day stay at this resort and have pretty much nothing but high praises for both the accomodations and staff.

The standard room was perfect...large bed, walk in shower, sitting area, porch with hammock and patio furniture, jacuzzi tub, flat screen TV with lots of movie channels, coffee maker, fridge stocked with pop, water and beer and some light snacks. The air conditioner worked perfectly considering it was on pretty much 24/7 to keep us Canadian's cool at night! We did have one morning with a cold shower and the power did go out a few times, but these minor glitches were definately not even close to putting a damper on the trip. Unlike some other people who have reviewed the resort, there was no musty or moldy smell in the room. The rooms were cleaned perfectly every day by the super friendly staff...and it probably doesn't hurt to tip ;) We would rather focus on the many many many (emphasis on many) excellent qualities of the resort.

Check in was easy...we arrived early so our room wasn't available yet. Staff secured our luggage, offered a welcome beverage, got us our wrist bands and we were off to explore, eat, drink etc while our room was readied.

It is definately an adult/couple environment which is nice. Relatively peacefull and relaxing all the time. If you are looking for more of a party atmosphere the sister Bavaro Resort next door is at your disposal for shows, bars, beach party etc. It is a perfect mix.

The food selection was perfect too. Lots too choose from including al la carte and buffet meals. Again, with two sister resorts being so close together, there are tons of options for every meal, from snack type food at the pool, to full al la carte menu's and buffets. Oh, and room service menu which is included too.

Swim up bar, pool, infinity pool, lots of beach, lots of beach chairs, shade, gym, spas, shopping, food, golf, water sports...the list goes on and on.

When booking this trip, we were looking for a quiet, peacefull, relaxing, sunny and warm escape from February...and we found it! We will definately be back...and hopefully booked into one of the suites with the swimming pools!

My husband and I were part of a large group that traveled together to this resort. Most of our group of 14 couples had issues with this resort. This is our second trip to the Dominican and found the food at this resort better than the place we stayed at last year but that is where the positive ends. The room was musty with mold and mildew in the bathroom. The air conditioning didn't work for the first 4 days of our 7 day stay this made everything damp. The toilet handle was broken (but repaired quickly), ants everywhere, the bed was rock hard with springs coming up into your back (bug free though). No hot water for 2 days, many power outages and finally on our last day we were awoken by the shower flooding, presumably from the room above as we were on the 2nd of 3 floors. Every request for repairs was met with pleasant assuance that is would be repaired as quickly as possible. Unfortunately it is done on "Dominican time"
We did find the staff pleasant and friendly however there are just not enough of them to provide good service. Fortunately our vacation was spent with good friends and lots of laughs to get us through the terrible accomadations!
