“could not be better ... maybe some quieter guests?”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

we had a fantastic holiday here, the hotel and staff are top quality and despite the manners displayed by some of the guests the staff all keep smiling. the beach is on your doorstep and all the restaurants are good quality for hotels. easy walking into town and worth the trip for shopping.

we aren't really up for hotel entertainment as we like to relax and chat with others, but it was the usual affair and sometimes entertaining. The bar staff and those waiters were top quality, never really had to wait for a refill as they soon know what you want and always have an eye out for an emptying glass.

no complaints whatsoever about the hotel, just be aware that there were a lot of over loud self important groups/families there, reserving sun beds ... unnecessary as there was always plenty and just displaying ignorance and lack of manners in the restaurant ..... you know who I'm talking about.

Room Tip: sea view rooms obviously, and get a higher floor as the bars can be noisy which is great when you...

We have just returned on the 29th July from a 14 night stay at his hotel. Me (23) and my boyfriend(25) absolutely loved the hotel, samana and our trips out to playa rincon beach and los haities. This is going to be a quick review.

Cons:
3.5 hour trip from puerto plata to the hotel (Was worth it!)
Could be more air con in public ares although it didn't disrupt what we was doing

Pro's:
The views from the hotel are amazing, honestly breath taking
the hotel is clean, tidy
staff pleasant always happy to help and always trying to make your stay more enjoyable.
Food: good quality for an all inclusive plenty to choose from ** ice cream to die for!!** , restaurants of good quality ( food available 24 hours)
Drinks: good, beer, spirits cocktails all included victor at the lobby bar will make any cocktail you ask for even if its not on the menu. ask for a long island their lush!!
Snorkeling, kayaking and other aqua activities are all free things like scuba diving you have to pay for as expected

Excursions:
we went to los haities ( i think thats how its spelt) which is their national park followed by a trip to barcadi island well worth the money. we also went to playa rincon beach also worth its money we had lobster lunch fresh from the sea and the views on this beach are to dream about crystal clear sea with plently of sea life to nosey at with snorkels.
Other people said that the zip liner trip was great however we ran out of time to do this which we are going to do when we return back to Dominican republic.

Can i just say, ignore the negative reviews the hotel i s spotless, the views amazing, food and dink plenty to choose from even if you have dietary needs just ask and they can sort you gluten free etc. The beach, pools and Jacuzzi all surrounded by the beautiful views.
If your like my boyfriend and get bored of just lying and relaxing in the sun the animation team will sort that out for you with different games ans activities around the pool and beach to keep you entertained. At night there is a lobby bar with piano bar type vibe and shows such as Micheal Jackson and circus ( which are worth a watch). overall we had a fab time and would go back within a heart beat.

Room Tip: the cost of a sea view upgrade to your room is worth the money or if not try emailing the hotel prio...

I went to Dominican Republic for the first time with my boyfriend in June this year. Dominican itself is fantastic, the area we stayed in was also fantastic, great views from most of the rooms that overlooked the beaches. We stayed in the golden villa which was lovely as you were out of the way from everything, very peaceful and quite nice that we had to get the buggy down to the room.

What we didn't realise was that the hotel was nearly 4 hours from the airport!! It was a very long journey and was made worse by the fact that Thomson LOST MY LUGGAGE!

Apparently with lost luggage, the hotel or the airline is meant to compensate you so that you can buy the essential things.. I was not once told this when I was there. I had to spend our money to buy clothes, shoes, underwear, a bag, a hat, toiletries etc, meaning we had less money for excursions, buying presents, giving tips etc. This was disappointing as I have used Thomson for years but certainly will not be anymore.

Another situation that the staff did not know how to handle. A man, his wife and his sister all got extremely drunk at the main pool bar on their first day, we were all sitting around the pool playing bingo which was great fun, definitely recommend!!, anyway, whilst the bingo is on the music is stopped, the lack of music upset this man and he decided to pick a fight with the bingo man, demanding the music back on, he then started a fight on some of the hotels guests. Skipping all the details, the hotel did nothing about this, they let him stay in the pool, pouring himself drinks, spitting in the pool and just generally making everyone feel uncomfortable. Obviously these situations don't happen often so it is understandable that the staff haven't been trained to handle these things. But it left a bad taste in my mouth for the rest of the holiday.

The food was very repetitive and bland, the same food was served at every meal, every day for the 2 weeks we were there. The Italian al a carte restaurant was absolutely amazing! Lots of choice and tasted fantastic!!

The hotel room was lovely and the hotel itself was great.

The pool had leaves and bird poo in it all of the time which wasn't very nice.

The night life wasn't really 'nightlife' although they did try very hard to make sure there was something to do or see from about 21:00 onwards.

Excursions were always quite far away, we went to Ocean World to swim with dolphins, it took 4 hours to get there and 4 hours to get back, it was expensive but a great experience.

The restaurant staff were always happy, dancing and singing and happy to help.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a beach view if you stay in the main hotel, or pay extra and stay in the beautifu...

Great place to visit with outstanding views of the surrounding area. we stayed in the golden villas 3124 amazing super king size bed, spacious room with superb views from the balcony. The people who complain about their room & beds, should take a look at the villas !! We found the food to be varied and plentiful in particular the gourmet & Italian restaurants. The upgrade is well worth it. Generally this hotel offers excellent value for money, it may not be 5 star in every way,but you have to be a very fussy person to find much to complain about. The staff were excellent and very helpful in dealing with any issues that needed attention. The one thing that was a big problem was the time share who hassled you which became a pain in the first week but once you got a tan they left you alone. We got everything we wanted out of our trip we would not go back or to another Bahia reasons being there are more places in the world we want to see and it's the bloody pesky time share that put us off

Room Tip: golden rooms all the way

Samana town is a place to visit, it helps to go as a group as we did & especially if you are able to fend off the locals by speaking in Spanish. You then are left alone.

The one thing that was a big problem was the noise & unruly behaviour of the local families in particular the children which arrived towards the end of our stay
The hotel should consider going back to adults only!

We recently travelled to the cayacoa for a 7 day stay. This was my 4th trip to the DR but my first trip to samana.

The hotel view is beautiful, it's set on a cliff side and the views are beautiful. It's refreshing since most areas of the DR with hotels are just resort after resort. It was easy to get chairs by the pool or beach and towels are easily exchanged.

However, we found most days that the pool area was unkept. They don't provide walk around service for food/drinks by the pool (there is a pool bar) but as people drink, empty glasses sit on the pool ledge and at times fall into the pool. The pool itself was often dirty with bugs and leaves floating around. I'm not to picky on these things but it's was a lot so it just looked dirty. Service at the pool bar wasn't great either. Spanish speaking guests seemed to be served multiple times and myself and other individuals had to wait ten plus minutes for service. We were told family and friends of staff of the grand bahia were allowed to use the resort, I'm not opposed to this, I think it's a great bonus for their staff however, multiple kids were in the pool without supervision. They were often rude, overly loud and constantly splashing in peoples faces. I fully support the staff being able to do this however, we were still paying guests and were not pleased with the behaviour.

The food was overly repetitive, what you saw at breakfast you saw at lunch then dinner. I am not a picky eater but found it challenging to find things to eat.

The staff was fine, many do not speak English and often brought the wrong drinks. As an English speaker travelling to the resorts, I do expect some English to be spoken, just the basics. Since many staff members do not speak English (or very little) it may be helpful for the hotel to provide a short translation sheet in check in for basic items (pillow, extra towels, fruits for drinks) I would have no problem making the effort in Spanish to work on communication.

The rooms are clean and the maids were quick at cleaning. Be aware toilet paper goes in the garbage and you cannot flush it. Greece is like this so I've experienced it before just an FYI. The beds are AWFUL please to the resort invest in new mattresses and pillows. Almost every guest we spoke with complained about the beds (way to hard) and pillows so flat they are non existent. My limbs fell asleep constantly and I had to take Advil I was in so much pain when I woke up.

We headed to town one day. I would advise passing on this for the future. It's dirty and the hagglers are over the top. I was more frustrated in 30 min than I ever have been. Stick to the resort, they have a couple cute shops on site for trinkets the extra dollar was worth it.

I would probably pass on this resort and look at different options. The hotel is marked as a five star I would say 3.5 max. It really depends on your personal budget however, I'd spend a bit extra and consider different options.

Dear Huesped ,

We would like to thank you for taking the time out to communicate the impressions of your vacation with our TripAdvisor community.

We are appreciate your positive comments about the quality of our service and our staff. But we regret your appreciation regarding local groups. If it is true that during the weekends we have a high demand for local customers in our facilities but it do not affect the services or the daily activities of the hotel. Also our hotel can not discriminate nationalities of our customers.

Once more thank you for your constructive criticism and we hope to have the pleasure to welcome you again.
