“Best View in Sainte-Anne HANDS DOWN!”
Reviewed 22 May 2013

We chose to have drinks at the pool bar before heading back to Deshaies after our sailing trip. This place is beautiful (the pictures don't give it justice). We had refreshing Mojitos by the pool and enjoyed the amazing views. They have two restaurants (one by the pool and one by the ocean). The restaurants don't open until Noon and nothing moves fast, but nothing moves fast in Guadeloupe. They speak very little English here, but were willing to work with my very little French.

We have recently returned from a three night stay at La Toubana as part of a 4 island Caribbean holiday. The location of the hotel is amazing and the entrance to the hotel on walkways over ponds is very attractive. All the accommodation is in bungalows and we had Number 10 which seemed to have the best location as it was near the reception and pool and at the top of the hill with a fabulous view of the water. As other reviewers have mentioned, the walk down to some of the bungalows and the beach is very steep and I might suggest that the hotel considers using a golf buggy to transport guests up and down as the beach area is definitely worth a visit. The small bay is great for swimming and the area is surrounded by a lovely deck with super comfy loungers.

The infinity pool looks beautiful but the swimming area is quite small as there are several raised areas within the pool which limit the swimming area. There is a beach bar at the pool but unfortunately it was never open during our stay. There are a few comfy loungers at the pool and several large bean bag chairs.

One of the problems we encountered was that the hotel allows local residents to use the pool and beach facilities. We were there over a weekend and there were several noisy children who were not hotel guests, splashing around in the pool. The local residents also took over most of the loungers at the pool and beach.

The hotel has wifi but we could not connect in our bungalow or at the pool, only in the lobby area. The hotel is located near St. Anne’s which also has beaches, several shops, cheap restaurants and bars. You do need to rent a car as the hotel is situated about 2km from the main town area. One of the major issues is the traffic in the morning and evening rush hour. We wanted to go to Basse Terre and had to leave the hotel at 5.30am to avoid the traffic into Point a Pitre as the previous day it took us an hour and a half to cover 8 km.

Although the hotel itself is lovely and is quite expensive the staff are generally rather abrupt and unfriendly. The reception staff speak adequate English but we found the bar and restaurant staff had very limited knowledge of English.

The bathroom needs to be improved. The light was on a motion sensor which took several seconds to turn on. The shower was a hand held style located fairly low down on the wall and when we tried to attach it to the upper connection, it kept falling down. A fixed shower should be installed. There was no bathtub. Facecloths were not provided.

There was also a lack of managerial presence in the hotel. When staying at a hotel that advertises itself as 4 stars, with prices to match, one expects to see the manager walking around, talking to the guests and making sure everyone is satisfied with the hotel but this was not the case in this hotel. We ate dinner one night at the hotel and although my meal was OK, my husband ordered the chicken curry which was awful, more like a scraggy pigeon.

To summarise I would give the hotel 3.5- 4 stars, mainly because of its location but would suggest that visitors try and avoid staying there over the weekend if possible.

Room Tip: Be sure to try and get a bungalow near the pool and reception area at the top of the hill

My newly wed husband and I spent the first five nights of our honeymoon at La Toubana and what a treat. With a view to die for from our private cabine, (number 11), we watched the sun rising over the Caribbean sea every morning from our terrace, before indulging in a fabulous breakfast. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the location was second to none. The private beach, infinity pool, spa and fitness room were also super and we would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a bit of relaxed luxury.

La Toubana is a small establishment of bungalows set on a hill side above the beach. Each unit has a large outside deck with gorgeous views of the sea. The rooms are small, but also include a small kitchen. The French linens are a treat and the grounds and rooms are kept very tidy. The small beach below is lovely for swimming, sun bathing and enjoying a really good lunch or drink. Breakfast is included with fresh tropical fruits, wonderful French breads, juice, coffee and hot items. The real magic is the views from the restaurant and pool bar overlooking the infinity pool and the 180 degree view of the sea and islands in the distance. The vista is unparalleled. The location is a bit remote and you should have a car to get around if you plan to stay for several days. We have stayed here twice and hope to return again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a great view of the sea. Be aware that the hill is steep to get to the beach.

My partner and I chose Guadeloupe for our honeymoon because we wanted a distinctly French Caribbean experience. La Toubana fulfilled all of our expectations and more. We only spoke minimal French, but everyone was very welcoming and understanding of our limited French and knew enough basic English to accommodate our needs. The property is absolutely stunning--perched high up on a hill the views of Basse Terre in the distance and the Club Med property next store at La Caravelle are breathtaking. The entire ambience of the place is elegant and very tropical. Beautiful flowers and palms are everywhere framed by stunning blue water surrounded by rocky cliffs.
Our Bungalow #6 was cozy, but perfect. The private porch with sea views was welcoming as was the comfortable bed with duvet cover and European style shower/tub. The Infinity swimming pool was gorgeous..if a little hard to swim in because it is very shallow. The beach down the hill is wonderful (even if the swimming area is a little small). The lounges are very comfortable and the beach bar/restaurant has excellent food and cocktails. The main dining room is to die for. Beautifully prepared French Creole fish and lobster, filet mignon, chicken colombo as well as Banana Flambe with Rhum Vieux or Passion fruit sorbet with a raspberry sauce. You can actually see the lobsters in the lobby of the hotel swimming in water filled areas. This is an exceptional place and we would definitely visit again. Next time, we plan to try the Spa treatments.
Ce' Bon!

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a Sea View room near reception. Some rooms are way down the hill or up the hill...

We went w somw friends at the end of our Brunch to the beach bar to finish they off with some champagne. Needless to say we were almost thrown off the beach because we arrived at a quarter to five They literally chased us off the pier and when we went up to the bar , the were rude as h}#%%^*! We were finally allowed to order a bottle of champagne but only if we paid upfront right away. We sat there and tried to drink the libetions , but they did everything they could to make us leave with lots of noise and disgrunteled gestures as they tore down the beach chairs.
The french in Guadloupe really need a reality check if they want any more tourists to come back. I would highly recommend going to the other French islands like St Martin. Or St Barts where at least they understand the sense of hospitalty.
I truly recommend to stay away from La Toubana Beach

My husband and I just got back from a 4 day stay at La Toubana. We enjoyed ourselves! The staff was quite friendly and spoke enough English to allow for good communication (we speak minimal French). The breakfast was good and the beach/pool areas were wonderful.

A couple of things - If a room with a view is important, make sure you request this. I was under the impression that all of the cottages had a good view of the ocean. We did - if you walked to end of our patio. That was a bit of a disappointment for me, however, our room was large and we had a retracting window from our kitchenette to the patio, which I liked. Given where our room was situated, we had complete privacy (#23). The room was a little worn and could use some updating. We also had an issue with the safe and the a/c that were not reconciled by the hotel. However, they do have safe deposit boxes at the front desk that we used and we were able to turn the temperature down on the second a/c unit in the cottage.

The description above sounds like this should have been rated a 3 or lower, but, we found the property overall very charming and relaxing. The views from the pool area were magnificent and made for an enjoyable dining experience at breakfast and dinner. The path to the beach is pretty steep, but, this was not a problem for us.

The hotel is close to the town of St Anne, but I would not recommend walking to town given the traffic on the main road and for the fact there are no sidewalks.
