“Very pretty”
Reviewed 25 February 2013

A lovely way to see the rainforest quickly and get a nice sense of Basse Terre. Nice stops along the way either for the views or activities. We stopped at the Crayfish Waterfall, which I reviewed separately.

“A good road....”
Reviewed 30 November 2012

The route through Basse Terre is the Route de Traverse -- from the west or ocean side, it is windy but the pavement is nice wide and the only challenge is being in the right gear to go UP hill -- it is steep. But is is a short drive and over before you know if you are stopping.

From the airport or PtP side the road is even easier -- more gentle sloping -- really a very good highway with lot of jumping off places for other things to see.

“A review about the road!”
Reviewed 12 August 2012

This review is about the Route de la Traversee, the east-west road that cuts Basse-Terre in two, through the Parc National and not the attractions along the way, which are under separate reviews. The road itself is a two lane paved road that saves time getting accross Basse-Terre as opposed to following the coast on either the north or south side. It climbs on each end and the drive is through a mountainous tropical environment that is often clouded over and wet. The scenery is generally limited to trees of the tropical forest and is obviously different than the coast or the drier Grande Terre. It gives access to three or so attractions, the best of which is the Parc des Mamelles (Parc Zoologique et Botanique de Guadeloupe).

“Scenic and great place to go hiking.”
Reviewed 13 February 2012

We always love to go hiking in the National Park of Guadeloupe. The trails are well-marked and not too difficult. It's wonderful that they have set aside such a large tract of land as a national park. Just remember to use bug spray as there can be a lot of mosquitoes. Also, it must have been wet this year as the trail was quite muddy, so proper footwear is a must and hiking sticks aren't a bad idea.

“Scenic short cut across Basse Terre”
Reviewed 20 November 2003

La Route de la Traversee is the road that crosses through the middle of Basse Terre and the Parc National. Coming from Pointe a Pitre, signs on the highway indicate when you are approaching the Route, but the actual turn off is not clearly marked. Have the route number to be certain.
You will acend quickly into the mountains with beautiful vistas of many peaks, but not many of the sea. There are numerous hiking trails but we found these to be really hot and humid since the sea breezes were blocked by the mountains and we preferred the trails accessible from the coast. The drive is quite easy, unlike many of the winding, steep roads that enter the Parc from the coast and fog was not a problem.
Descending on the west coast after about one hour, you will pass many flamboyant trees which are magnificent when in blooming season. You will be quite close to Pigeon Island which is a few miles to the left.
