“So much fun -- the Iron Market”
Review of Marche de Fer

Owner description: This is not the Marche de Fer in Port-au-Prince. I've tried to add this listing and some idiot keeps on sending me a link saying it's been added, linking to the Marche de Fer, PaP.There used to be dozens of these all over Haiti, but now only a few still exist. Jacmel's, similar to the one in Cap Haitian, is hidden away in the central colonial zone. If you don't make your way up the steep, windy and narrow streets, you'll miss it. Unlike the market in Port-au-Prince, there aren't any tourists here, as it is used for the same reason it was built 150 years ago, Haitians selling basic needs, like food and clothing, to other Haitians.

Lots of stuff to bargain for -- got a vodou flag of St. Anthony for $35, but didn't bargain very hard because I really wanted it. Handmade, sequins and beads.

A really interesting place if you can fit it in. We were lucky enough to get a parking space in the entry court; not sure where the car would have ended up otherwise! The drill appears to be to engage a guide/protector to show you around, bargain for you, keep more aggressive vendors at bay. We did find several very nice bead or sequin "voodoo flags" which took some hard bargaining to afford, but the work involved in producing these is amazing, and they are a quintessential souvenir of Haiti. Keep your cool, and your cash close and you'll see another side of this community.

Despite the destruction from the 2010 earthquake the people and the vendors make again the Iron Market the most vibrant place in Port au Prince. The iron building has put back in its feet and inside (BUT also outside ) a lot of activity is going on. It is probably the single most impoertant old attraction back in place after the earthquake. Don t miss it.

It is an well-organized market surrounded by a chaotic neighborhood. There is a guarded area for taxis to park. Expect to have to accept someone as your guide and tip them afterwards. There are several stalls where all kinds of souvenir merchandise is available. Some stalls sell voodoo items. Your guide can help you to bargain prices down a bit.

If you visit this market, be ready to bargain. Never accept the first price, and stay primarily in the single digits on your price suggestions. I ended up with a few nice things, but others in the group got better deals. Most stands have similar merchandise, so be on the lookout for unique items. Be aware that a large portion of the market is made up of stands filled with voodoo potions and powders - not for the faint-hearted.
