This rather small museum is packed with history. Unexpected and beautifully done, it is basically in 3 sections with history, art and the tomb of former Presidents.

The visit to the National Musem is itself interesting as it provides a condensed version of Haitian history. The building itself is also woth a visit, set as it is underground with some awesome mosaic work above ground on the roof!

This terrific museum has priceless treasures of Haitian history, from pistols and swords of early Haitian independence leaders to François Duvalier's hat and cane. It would be great if visitors could take home some memories of the museum to show others, whether photos (forbidden), post cards, or a guidebook. It was overwhelming to see so many important objects and not to be able to save a memory for them. I'm not sure if they give tours in English, but the tour guide was very friendly and knowledgeable and accompanied us all around and explained the museum in French. This museum deserves to be supported as much as possible by visitors, so that the history can be preserved for the Haitian people themselves!

There aren't a lot of good museums to visit right now in Port au Prince. Great galleries, but the city is still struggling for museums. I really enjoyed my visit to the Pantheon last weekend and had a truly thoughtful guide. It helps if you know a little of the history of Haiti and feel a rush to see things like the anchor from the Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria (supposedly!).

If this is your first trip to Haiti, visit the museum for a wonderful history lesson. Displays are presented in historical sequence. Well maintained and a credit to the country of Haiti! Well done!
