“Female Travels Solo”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

To a hostel in Kingston Jamaica... Crazy, you say? I was having similar thoughts myself honestly. But then when I arrived, they all dissipated. Scotty, the owner, welcomed me warmly and made sure I got all settled and comfortable. The room was safe and clean, everyone was so friendly and from all corners of the earth. I woke up the next day to a complimentary breakfast and some of the best coffee I've ever had. The location is ideal, the price can't be beat, and the company was marvelous. Even if you can afford to stay somewhere else, you won't have an experience like this anywhere else.

After a pleasant staying with a local woman up in the hills around Kingston, the Reggae hostel was our best choice to continue our exploring of the city itself and it's surroundings. It is situated in a quiet and safe area (which we prefered), and only on walking distance from the public transport centre of Half Way Tree from where you can reach any destination. The private room was occupied so the hostel crew was so kind to let us (couple) share a 4 bed room together with our fellow traveller, which we appreciated a lot.
Learning how to pronounce our names made us feel welcome immediately as personalities, and not just as next guests. Every time again they appealed to us in this personal way, by calling us by name. Lovely detail which makes you feel special!
The accomodation itself provided in everything needed : good information, very friendly staff who were very concerning about your well being, an extra fan in the room, basic breakfast but satisfying, free sheets, clean (bath)room and other spaces, cool drinks, cigarettes, 2 pc's and superspeed wifi, a trappers' kitchen with fridge, big and nice back yard space to relax and communicate with others, closed frontgate whichs opens only from the desk when ringing the bell (safety!), etc...

We managed to figure out ourselves how to do the Blue Mountains by ourselves, very cheaply by using public transport and very easy to do. We typed all our usefull information in a worddoc and saved in on the hostel's computer desktop. Hopefully the hostel will post it on the information board for future travellers, or print it out for them. If not, ask for it!

We loved our staying here a lot, and will surely recommend it to others as we already did ;-)
Thanks all, for our memorable days while staying with you!

Pro's:

- friendly and obliging hosts
- central & safely located
- clean rooms
- free wi-fi and 2 computers to use
- 3 chill-out areas and 1 bar outside
- shared kitchen and fridge (got to put names on your items)
- if you want to go out at night time, the hosts can arrage a cheap taxi

Con's:

- unfortunately the 2 chiling areas outside do not provide any shadow
due to shared bathrooms the toilets might not always be clean and available (depending on guests!!)
- the shared kitchen is very small, so not evrybody can cook at the same time

Room Tip: Get a room with a/c!!!

Cheap and good place to stay. Just for a night, or longer! Very clean and relax! Everything you would expect from a hostel! Breakfast is simple, but good! Can recommend this place!
The place had no signs at the gate, so it is hard to find on your own, but all taxi drivers seem to know the place. There's a taxi place next door, which is perfect for trips from the hostel

As lots of other guests, I booked just for a couple nights but stayed longer and came back. Even though the place lacks some shade & confort in the yard - but work in progress - everybody's around just act friendly, socialize and get together. So you'll have a very good time. The staff is so friendly with Zana Nolife Withoutmusic spreading her joy all over and Scotty very helpful to tell where to go and how. Reggae Hostel is the place to be if you want to party in Kingston !

I spent seven weeks last summer in Kingston. I planned on staying a few nights at the Reggae Hostel while I looked for an apartment. However, I immediately fell in love with the hostel staff and it's overall vibe that I decided to spend my entire summer there. I had a remarkable summer staying at the centrally-located hostel, where the surroundings were always kept clean, I always felt safe, and I met so many interesting people passing through. I could not recommend this place enough to anyone traveling through Kingston.

Stayed there for about a week, and enjoyed my stay there. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They explained where everything was, and how to get there. They recommended places to go in the evenings as well.

The general atmosphere inside the hostel was very good. People would interact together, planning things and going out together.

Would definitely recommend.
