We will be returning in January. How can you improve on terrific, great, and wonderful??? When my wife and I discussed one of the places we wanted to go this winter Jewel Grande was at the top of the list. We can't wait to return. We were hoping to get Lenroy and Ripton back as our butlers.

We travelled in August and knew the resort would be quiet. We felt like we had the resort to ourselves! It was one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had! Staff was amazing! Everyone was happy and friendly. The food was great too. Loved the jerk chicken and meat pies! Cade our Butler was so lovely. Our room had a great view. We had to wait a bit for the room but really wasn’t a problem. Wish there were umbrellas in the beach but we stayed in shade by the pool so it wasn’t an issue. Looking forward to another visit soon!

Travelled with my wife and 2 young sons (1.5 and 3.5 years old). All I can say is wow! Tremendous service that truly felt personalized and from the heart. The resort is beautiful and the staff here are second to none. Special shout outs to Dean Martin, Jodian at the pool bar, Trevaine and Kristopher at waves! Also can’t forget Steven and Stefan who make the best jerk chicken ever! Cannot wait to go back!

So my husband and I had a destination wedding in Mexico at a Secrets Resort and then traveled here for our honeymoon which the experience was nice but could have been better. Here our breakdown of the resort:

Lobby: The Lobby area was set up nice however at most there were only 2 individuals assisting guest so sometimes there could be a wait for service. The individuals were always very pleasant.

Taxi Cab: The resort has there preferred Taxi Service they use which charged triple the normal amount for traveling nearly 5mins up and down the street. We traveled to shops across from Sandals resort which was approx. no more than 10min ride and paid $40 which probably should have been $20 or less if we were locals.

The hotel has a Free Shuttle that takes you to Rose Hall Shops yet we just happened to find this out after asking so many times about taxi rides, so if you do stay here please be aware of this it leaves throughout the daytime. NOTE The guy servicing the shuttle dropped us off and never came back on schedule however we were able to have the information desk at Rose Hall Shops contact the driver which we nearly waited an hour for.

The Resort also has Free Shuttle to and From Airport which can be set up at Desk 21 upon exiting airport for your arrival.

Location: Approx. 15min from airport and 10 min from Margaritaville.

Room: The room itself is hands down lovely. We had a Suite that was set up like a Condo featuring a Kitchen, Living Room, Balcony, Walk in Shower, King Size Bed, and toilet area, along with washer and driver. The furniture and decor was nice and it made us feel as we were home.

Food: The restaurant food at this resort was hands down delicious from the buffet to the Mediterranean food I was trying to eat my heart out. The Asian place on the water was average. When we arrived the lights were turned off so not sure if there is a problem with electricity in this area since the winds were high on this evening yet we had to sit in the dark for about 10min. I am not sure what the issue was but there should be a generator so avoid this from happening or another back plan to avoid guests sitting looking confused in the dark. On one night I thought it was really nice that the resort had an outdoor Barbecue which was hands down very nice. I am not sure if this is down throughout each week or not but this was a great experience for all guest to enjoy from the variety of food and the live entertainment.

Snack Bar: The snack bars at the resort are average just something to hold you over until a real meal. Everyone was nice and had a good spirit yet there were a handful of times in which the waiter at the snack bar/grill took forever to take orders and service guests so possibly additional help can be added to this area along with additional cooks since it sometimes took a while for the food to be prepared.

Butler Service: I was thinking I was going to have exception service since we had a butler yet on the first day there I could not get in touch with Garon not sure what happened but he was MIA until we spoke with the concierge and then he found us and apologized. Alicia our other butler tried her best to help and assist us as best she could yet on the day of our departure there was suppose to be someone to carry our bags to the front yet that never happened so I just called the front desk to have someone. On several occasions it was hard to contact butlers so this definitely needs to be improved if this is suppose to be perk. I feel as though this is however not needed because it didn't add anything to our trip.

Resort Service/House Keeper:On one occasion I called for detergent for the washer and a blow dryer for my hair and this took literally hours before getting either item. One evening we had a pigeons leave a mess on our balcony and we called for this to be cleaned and it was never done until the follow day upon or 2nd phone call.

Room Service: The room service is 24hr yet they charge a $5 delivery fee so make note of.

Coffee Shop: This was average offering coffee tea, ice cream, and dessert/sandwiches. To me it was pretty much the same thing everyday so it would be nice to switch up the selection some. You definitely should try the Lemongrass Tea an Cheesecake Ice cream. This closes at 5pm, it would be nice if it stayed open thru the night.

Library: The resort has a small Library with book and games.

Resort Grounds: The resorts ground are well keep and lovely. They have a lot of security working all over doormen/women 24hrs a day. Everything is very beautiful especially the landscaping. There is area on side of resort and by pool for ping pong. Also there are pool tables in lobby area and by pool. Around the resort you can find these breath taking works of art featured on the walls of the resort and in the rooms the artist that drew these paintings is phenomenal I was blown away by the various pictures around the resort which captivates the culture.

Spa: If I returned to this resort it would be for the Spa this experience left me speechless. I like how everyday they have a special so you can opt for a service at a reasonable price which is well WORTH IT! My husband and I received a couples massage and spent time in the sauna and mineral pool and it was so very relaxing. Thank you Jewel Grande Spa for that lovely experience.

Resort Activities: This resort is family friendly yet they do not offer a lot of family activities so if you are looking for a lot of entertainment this is probably not the best pick. However for couples or ones wanting to have a relaxing experience this is a good pick. We enjoyed the quiet nights and calm atmosphere.

Nightlife: The resort has a lounge upstairs in the lobby which just looks like a open room with a DJ. This area definitely needs to be jazzed up and could use some modern seating and decor to identify this as a lunge and not just a random open space.

Night Lobby Entertainment: This was a GREAT feature at the resort every night they had live music and it was truly good and relaxing while eating dinner or just sitting around at the nearby bar or in lobby area.

Night Lobby Bar: This bar was lots of fun at night time the bartenders will keep you laughing and smiling while entertaining you as they make drinks. I enjoyed this better than going to the lounge.

Pool: There are two pools featured at this resort.

Ocean: The ocean is nice and has 2 floats you can lay on which is nice feature for guests, along with kayaking, and sail boating. There is also a nice pier you can walk on out to the ocean which is romantic.

Gift Shop: Small but has some basic souvenirs for guests and closes at 5 pm.

Recommendations: This resort has potential to grow but needs to improve on servicing guests.

We’ve been planning this trip since February. After spending a few months researching here and on family vacation critic, we booked Jewel Grande back in May. The three-month wait felt like six, but we finally were able to spend 10 “Jamaizing” days at JG. Not a single thing was lacking or not to our satisfaction, with service and luxury I’ve not enjoyed previously. There were several special moments we’ll remember forever, and my wife and son and I agree this was our best vacation ever.

Before I get into the (lengthy) details of why it was so great, rest assured that we’ve read every review and post on the Montego Bay forum that mentions JG. We looked at many other resorts, such as the Hilton, the Hyatts, and Jewel Runaway Bay. We knew only 1 tower was open, no shade on the beach, little-to-no nightlife, and limited dining options. Some posts mentioned lack of service in some areas. In short, we felt we had done the research and knew what we were getting ourselves into.

And it was even better than we hoped.

Getting thru customs at MBJ was swift, and hanging a left after customs it was easy to find the JTL desk so we could get our transfer. Checking in with them took about 2 minutes, and 5 minutes later a guy came to escort us to the van. We were the only ones in the van, so it was a private transfer for us.

15 minute ride to JG, and the grounds are stunning from the get go. Greeted at the door by several friendly and helpful staff, who started the pretty much unbroken record of staff greeting us with the JG “hand on heart” gesture. Ruth at the front desk came out to greet us, and sat us in the lobby. Lemon grass towels and punch followed while Ruth got us checked in. She brought us our removable bracelets (thank goodness for being able to take those things off), explained a few items, then turned us over to Kade, one of our two butlers. Kade had the cart waiting for us, took us on a brief tour, and up to our room.

The two bedroom was near the top of the tower, and was immaculate and well appointed. The view from the balcony was stunning. Beds were on the firm side, which was fine. Night table lamps have USB charging ports and AC jacks right in the base of the lamps, which is very convenient. Master bath was large, two sinks, with toilet in separate room. Comfy robes and slippers, plus a safe in the large walk-in closet.

Kitchen had wine glasses, coffee cups, cereal bowls, silverware, but not much more, FYI, not that we missed not having plates or cookware. 5-cup coffee maker takes basket filters, should you choose to bring your own coffee, as we did, even tho the house coffee was restocked daily. Other appliances include toaster, microwave, electric kettle, stove and oven, dishwasher. Washer and dryer were great, bring your own Tide pods, and don’t forget to empty the reservoir from the dryer before each use, that was new to us.

Red Stripe, juices, water, and Coke were stocked daily in the fridge. Small bottles of liquor were provided once per stay and not restocked. We had specified on the form we filled out just prior to arriving requesting milk be in the fridge, and it was. We had to ask for ice, but it was brought quickly. Our room was cleaned every day, usually before lunch, which was amazing.

TV was good with Jamaican and Miami local channels, Nickelodeon, lots of sports and news channels, but no premium channels. No big deal, as wifi was excellent, and we were able to stream Netflix on our iPads. Wifi was also strong by the pool, but was more spotty on the beach.

The beach is beautiful, clean white sand, and while there are large beds of seaweed, there are also large areas of clear, turquoise water. No water shoes required. Not much opportunity for Great Barrier Reef-type snorkeling, but many kids were exploring the seaweed and finding small fish. On the jetty at the far east side of the beach, there are lots of little hermit crabs scrambling in the rocks, mostly around late afternoon when the sun isn’t too strong.

Paddle boards, kayaks and canoes have a fairly generous yet bordered area to roam around in. The lifeguards take people out on the Hobie Cats, and go out past the breakers, several hundred yards off shore. When the waves are calm, it’s a fun, relaxing ride, with only the sound coming from the wind and the twin hulls carving through the deep blue sea. When the waves are 3-4 feet, as when we went, it’s a rollicking splash-fest, waves coming from all sides, with the only sound coming from your 7-year-old begging to go back to shore.

The main pool was medium size, not huge, with a zero-entry gradient, and small fountains. There’s no need to play the towel game and reserve chairs at 7am, there were always plenty of open seats poolside and on the beach. There isn’t a proper swim up bar where you sit on a submerged stool and place your order. But you can simply swim over to the side where Crickets is, and ask for whatever you want, and someone will then bring your drink over to wherever you are. Staff was also checking in on people regularly. On more than one occasion, a staff member would bring us refills without asking. At other times, they asked first. And if we were drinking slowly and just reading our books, no one came to unnecessarily ask if we were “doing ok”. This was one of the many examples of “anticipation”, where the staff recognized a need before we mentioned it, and didn’t bother us when we didn’t need to be.

There is another pool further west, attached to another tower. It has a nice infinity edge looking towards the ocean, fountains, a polo net, as well as a real swim up bar. This was not staffed during our stay, but the pool was still open for swimming. Next to this pool is a small water park appropriate for kids.

Breakfast buffet was excellent, better than many non-AI places we’ve been to (looking at you, Westin Lagunamar). Made-to-order eggs and omelets, freshly made pancakes, waffles, and French toast (which was not dry and made with cinnamon – delicious!), other breads, bagels, fresh fruit, yogurts, and cereals such as froot loops, rice krispies, and corn flakes, among others.

Lunch at Crickets by the main pool was always a delight. We never got tired of eating there, even after 9 days in a row. Burgers were great, as were the Jamaican patties, shrimp wrap, and jerk chicken. The jerk pork was the best of all, tho, really tender and spicy. There are tables as well as seats at the bar, or you can have food brought to you by the pool or on the beach. There’s also a lunch buffet indoors, but we never went.

The dinner buffet was decent quality, and the service was excellent. Several different cuts of steak were available, with other meat, seafood, and veggie options. Lobster is available for an extra charge, and it was worth it. Not overdone, decent portion for the price, and lots and lots of butter.

The Pierside restaurant featured Asian cuisine during our stay, with decent sushi, and really spicy Kung Pao chicken. Service was again excellent, and the view of the sea and sky was stunning.

Waves was a bit more on the elegant side, with excellent entrees and salads. Service was unfaltering, and there was frequently live music appropriate for an upscale dinner setting.

Overall we found the food to be of high quality. Steaks and burgers were cooked to order, nothing was slathered in too much sauce, vegetables were not overcooked, and presentation was always beautiful.

For drinks, we stuck mostly to Appleton rum and the house wines (both the red and white were good), so I can’t speak to the quality of the premium wines that come at an extra cost. The cocktails at Crickets (by the pool) were well-made, and the bartenders had no problem with “make mine strong, please”.

We had several moments where the quality of service provided by JG really shone. On day 2, I took my kid to swim in the unstaffed pool for a bit, and unknowingly left my GoPro there. While getting ready the next morning, I began to worry when I couldn’t find my camera. We inquired at the front desk before heading to breakfast, and sure enough one of the pool guys had found it and turned it in. We lost a hat, and that was found, too. I broke one of the toilets in our room – twice! – and it was fixed quickly. We lost water once, and it was back 10 minutes after calling the desk.

One night, they showed a movie out by the pool. We were just coming back from dinner, and my boy was thrilled to see Coco being projected onto a floating movie screen. We quickly changed into our bathing suits, and came back down for his first ever night swim. Entering the pool, with the blue and purple underwater lights on, and the movie playing, my boy said “is this magic?”. Yep, it is. When it was time to get out, our butler Lenroy brought us bathrobes, so we wouldn’t get chilly walking back to our room in the night air.

We decided to use the complimentary access to the Hilton and check out the water park. The concierge, Damian, made the arrangements for us, somewhat at the last-minute even. But as we’re walking up to the front desk at 10:55am to meet the shuttle, which was to depart at 11am, we see the shuttle pulling away. I ask the guy at the door if we just missed the shuttle, and he states we did, then speaks into his headset microphone. I march back to the front desk, ready to complain about the shuttle leaving early. Just as I’m about to wave my arms around in an indignant fashion, I see the shuttle come around again. The guy at the door radioed the driver and had him turnaround. I was speechless.

The waterpark at the Hilton was great, with a big water slide and a smaller water slide, and a lazy river that required a surprising amount of effort. Food and drink were free for JG guests, they had proper swim up bars with submerged stools, and the service was very good. But spending an afternoon there also helped validate our choosing JG. The Hilton was large, crowded, and loud. People were pushy, there was limited seating, and the beach was not as nice as JG’s. When we were ready to come back to JG, the Hilton’s front door guys contacted JG, and our shuttle arrived to get us 15 minutes later. Arriving back at JG was like coming home after a hard day at work. The serenity and beauty, coupled with much lower quantity of guests, makes the whole place feel like a spa.

Aside from the beautiful beach and pool and grounds, and great food, what makes JG so special is the staff. Every single person, from the people who open the door, to the gardeners, to the poor guy cleaning the floor outside the gift shop because my boy and I dripped water all over the place right after he finished cleaning, to the chefs and wait staff, every single person was friendly, kind, and helpful.

The concierge went above and beyond. Damien addressed me and my family by name every day, and every time we made a request, either he or the butlers (sometimes both) would check in to make sure we were satisfied. Near the end of our stay, I mentioned to my wife we should ask for a noon check out. We pass by Damien’s desk later on and he informs us he’s secured a complimentary late check out for 1pm – we didn’t even have to ask! He knew we had a 4pm flight, and gave us the maximum amount of time to enjoy JG before heading home.

And enjoy we did. After another morning of much French toast, hunting for hermit crabs, and swimming in the pool, we showered up, closed out the room, and headed back down to Crickets for one last lunch. We asked Jodian and Norvia to put in an extra order of chicken nuggets we could take for our boy to eat on the plane. Not only did they do that, they also prepared Jamaican patties for us grown ups to take on the plane. Again, we didn’t even have to ask.

Sitting at the Crickets bar with my family, eating our last burger and jerk pork, enjoying Appleton 12 and pineapple, gazing out at the myriad greens and blues of the ocean, remembering some of the things we did over the past 10 days, it was a perfect moment. Then Jodi and Norvia started singing along to “Just the Way You Are” by Bruno Mars and I couldn’t help but tear up a little. Not from sadness, but because it was just so perfect.

We extend our sincere gratitude to every member of the JG staff. There are a few people who were extra special:
• Kade and Lenroy, our butlers who literally catered to our every need
• Damien, above and beyond more than once
• Jodiane at Crickets and the coffee shop, one of the sweetest persons we’ve ever met
• Gary, Jodian, and Norvia at Crickets, thanks for the mojitos and varieties of Appleton, and schooling me on dance hall vs rock steady

But everyone at Crickets, and all the lifeguards were just great.
