This town square is a hub of activity for the local people! The statues and cobblestone are beautiful.

We liked walking over to the town center and having a look around at where the locals are doing their daily business. Gave us a feel for a part of the real Jamaica. Lots of people, but never felt intimidating.

Grand market was fun, very busy shopping. We felt safe attending this market even with a child.

For such an important figure to Jamaican history, it is disappointing to see Sam Sharpe's memorial disrespected and history devalued. Trash is strewn about and graffiti is everywhere. The Cage, an 1806 brick building adjacent to Sam Sharpe's memorial that used to lock up people, is now a shop that sells phone cards. It's sad to see historical buildings not being preserved.

Nearby Sam Sharpe Square is the Montego Bay Civic Centre, which is a nice building from the outside (we didn't go in). Also nearby is the Freedom Monument that commemorates Jamaica's 1831-1832 Emancipation War. The Monument lists names of enslaved Jamaicans who were traied in Slave Court and Court Martial. Though the signage states that the Monument "salutes the courage and anti-slavery ideology," the Monument itself and the surrounding buildings prove to be a poor tribute to this part of history. Across from the Monument is a tower-like structure with no doors and is where they hung people. It seems to be used now as a toilet, as it smelled strongly of urine.

Overall, I'm highly disappointed by Montego Bay's commemoration of this part of its history.
