“A Perfect Retreat during SumFest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2011

Thanks everyone at Half Moon for a wonderful experience!

From the moment I checked in, I experienced nothing but exceptional service from every member of the Half Moon team. The spa suite was perfect -- spacious, fabulously decorated and right on the beach. I especially enjoyed the view and the balcony/patio where I ate breakfast in the mornings over looking the water.

Overall, the property was a great getaway and retreat from the long nights at Reggae SumFest which kept me pretty busy. Everything you need is on the premises, but you are a short drive to downtown Mo Bay, the Hip Strip and many other venues and attractions in Mo Bay.

I'm looking forward to returning next time for SumFest or sooner! And next time, I will make time for the spa!

If it's good enough for the Queen of England, it's good enough for me!
This villa resort is old, but not tired. It has the charm of the Old South & the hospitality to match. The views are incredible. The property is spacious, clean & well kept. The staff treats you very well.
If you have the good fortune to stay in a villa, you get the benefits of a butler, maid & cook. Plus, there are regular visits from the pool guy and the gardener. We kept feeling like we were in old Hollywood.
You can't help but feeling like royalty.

We just returned from our first trip to Jamaica and staying at the Half Moon certainly helped make our holiday special. Some of the things about this hotel that we really enjoyed were:

1. The food and drinks
Food and drinks at the Half Moon were excellent. We loved the Seagrape where you can dine with an ocean view! Great lobster and great ambiance!! Sugar Mill was also very good, and the Italian Restaurant was enjoyable, too (it is the only one with airconditioning which provides a nice break from the heat and the mosquitos!)
If you are on a budget, like us, I would recommend the meal plan. It allows you to order one selection from each of 5 courses for lunch and dinner (appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert)The breakfast buffet is also included in the plan. Even though we never ate more than three courses for lunch and dinner, the meal plan was such a value that it literally saved us hundreds of dollars compared to just ordering off the menu. Knowing the food was already paid for was a nice treat for us. The plan also includes all non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks as well as gratuity and taxes. All the drinks were fabulous-top shelf and tasty!

2. The staff
The staff at this resort is outstanding. Everyone is personable and seems to honestly want to make your vacation special. We especially enjoyed our conversations with Rob de Bekker, who manages the Seagrape. Nicholas, who works around the West Cottages, will climb up a palm tree and get you a cococut if you so desire. He even has straws on him so you can drink the milk before he gives you the meat! Milford, the bar tender at the 19th hole bar, gave us some local insight into Jamaica. These are just a few examples of the special people who work at Half Moon.

3. The property
The property is large and has beautiful landscaping. In fact, one of our off-property tours included a visit to a botanical garden, but we had already seen all the lovely flowers at the Half Moon. Just walking around and looking at all the flowers was amazing. There is also a little stream that runs along the non-ocean side of the property. It is full of fish and therefore attracts some very interesting birds. In general, our walks around the property always provided some beautiful and interesting sights.

4. The snorkeling/beach
If you get seasick on boat snorkle trips, not to worry as you can snorkle right off the beach by the West Cottages. On our last day, we saw a lot of fish, including a large puffer and a barracuda. It is also nice that you can always get back to shore very easily if you need to rest. The water is warm and calm, so you can stay in for a long time if you desire. If you just like to relax, the beaches are beautiful and very clean and they were not at all crowded during our stay.

5. The room
Our room was located in the West Cottages area and had a lovely ocean view. Housekeeping kept the room immaculately clean and we enjoyed being able to still see the ocean when we went inside to cool off with some A/C.

To make your stay the best possible I would recommend that you bring bug spray since the mosquitoes are plentiful. Next time, I would also arrange for some tours from home rather than use the hotel tour desk. They were nice, but the surcharges for tours are rather high. In addition, they do not seem to arrange group tours but offer you private drivers instead. This is nice but pricey. If you want to book through them, ask for Lance from Glamour Tours! He was fabulous, knowledgeable and accomodating. The two excursions we enjoyed the most were going to the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary and climbing the Dunns River Falls.

Overall, in my opinion, you cannot go wrong by staying at the Half Moon. It is a very special experience!

I can't say enough about this place! My wife and I have have been coming to the half moon for the past 3 years. We left there today with extreme sadness. Plans are already being made for next year. The half moon treats you so good that it's hard to go anywhere else. Compliments especially go out to Alicia from the front desk and Cordell who works at the seagrape.

If you go to the moon please stay on the west side. The beach front cottages are phenomenal! You are literally steps away from the beach. Plus it's quiet and very relaxing. If you are looking for r&r this place is for you. The half moon lures this crowd in. This past week we had some loud neighbors check in. A first for us but the splendor of the moon over came this.

If you haven't been here you have to go! The food is good except the Italian restaurant. Didnt enjoy it to much. I am from jersey and we have a lot of authentic Italian restaurants so I am used to a certain type. But you the sugar mill and seagrape are the best!

Half moon we will be back. Our 2nd home!

We rented a villa for an extended-family vacation and it was the most fun, most relaxing trip we have had in a while. Traveling with a toddler can be a lot of work, but having a butler, cook and housekeeper left us nothing to do but play. The resort is safe and secure. Everything is conveniently located with a variety of activities for different ages and tastes. You can also easily book excursions off-resort at the front desk.

Rooms/bathrooms are spacious, spotless and nicley furnished. The best part is the staff. Keith did everything from shopping to running errands to making rum punch. Carmen cooked food that was comparable to the best restaurants in the resort (see restaurant info below). Food from commissary is reasonably priced so if you don't eat out, it's really very affordable. (If you are price-conscious, be aware that imported wine and beer can be pricey.) When we go back we will just let them pick what to buy and serve, b/c everything they made was delicious.

Avoid the English Pub - we got a to go order on arrival and it was not good (again, have faith in the staff to cook something wonderful). The Sugar Mill is pricey but delicious with excellent service. The resort has a beach cookout 1-2 days a week depending on season. It's reasonable given that it is all you can eat and they have an amazing assortment of delicious food. They also have a live band and is a really fun family event. Highly recommend swimming w/dolphines, horseback riding into the ocean and yoga/massage which is in a cabana over the ocean.

We will definitely be back!

My new husband and I traveled to Half Moon after getting married in late April. When we booked our honeymoon, we did a lot of research on destinations around the Caribbean. I had heard great reviews about Half Moon, and after sharing the information with my husband and reading many of the great reviews on TripAdvisor, we made our decision. The price was fair, Montego Bay is easy to get to from the States, and it just seemed like our perfect trip.

When we arrived, we were exhausted from the wedding weekend, but very happy to finally be on our honeymoon. Half Moon has the nicest area in the airport to wait for your van to the resort. They offered us cold water bottles, and we only waited 10 minutes before it was time to leave. We were alone in our shuttle, and it was only a 15 minute drive. When we arrived at the property, it was like an oasis. The lush greenery was simply gorgeous. The Main Hall is littered with pictures of Prince Charles, Jackie and John Kennedy, the Queen, and other royalty, prominent business people, and historic figures from the 20th century.

We were greeted with rum punches which were absolutely delicious and went down too easily. Our room wasn't quite ready yet - which was a bummer because we were exhausted - but we found our way to lunch and just relaxed. We picked up our complimentary beach cruiser bikes, and rode to our room, which was now available.

We stayed in a Hibiscus Suite - which is the most affordable option. We were hoping for an upgrade, and was not offered one but WOW – once we saw our room we quickly forgot about the upgrade. The suite was very spacious, and being on the second level, we had a beautiful overlook of the beach, which was steps away from our door. The sliding glass doors were such a treat to be able to open in the mornings to let in the ocean breeze and the soothing sound of crashing waves. I should mention also that the bathroom was just as big as the bedroom area, with modern, American amenities, a separate water closet, his and hers closets, and a tub large enough for both of us. The king-size bed was a true king, not two twins smashed together. The mattress was comfortable and firm yet soft enough to be just right.

All of our meals were impeccable. The breakfast buffet had everything and more you could ever want, and we are still trying to perfect the brewing on the pounds of Blue Mountain Half Moon coffee we purchased since it was so delicious. Lunches by the pool, on the beach, or on the terrace were delicious. And dinners were exquisite.
We learned quickly that the Jamaican people in general, and the Half Moon employees in particular are happy, enthusiastic, and want you to enjoy your stay both at the resort and within their beautiful country.
The spa was my favorite part of the trip. The grounds were exquisite, the locker rooms had every amenity, and the couples massage we received was beautiful. My only complaint is that I didn’t realize until later that we could have received our treatments on the over-water cabanas for a mere $30 extra. We would have done it if we would have known!

My husband is an avid golfer, and played a round of golf at the Half Moon course. He thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon and his caddy, Kevin.
All-in-all, we cannot wait to make another trip back to Half Moon. It was our perfect honeymoon, the perfect speed for us. Thank you Half Moon!

We had an absolutely perfect wedding at the Half Moon on June 11th!! Our wedding planner Shanoya was wonderful, as well as the rest of the staff. We had 60 people travel to Jamaica for the wedding, they all stayed at the Half Moon and everyone absolutely loved the resort and the wedding. Half of our guest stayed in Villa’s and the other half in rooms. The Half Moon upgraded everyone to nicer rooms which everyone loved. The staff, food, rooms, beach, resort and I could go on is better than any resort I have ever been too. We stayed at the Half Moon for 8 days and were sad to leave everything was just perfect!! We will return to the Half Moon year after year!!!
