“The best villa”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2014

We came for a wedding - all the guests stayed in villas of 8 bedrooms each. Ours was comprised of the single friends of the bride and groom, so of course we hosted more parties, stayed up later, and generally were far more demanding of our staff than the others'. Raul, Celena and Sonia went above and beyond to take care of us, they never complained and, in fact, seemed to really enjoy having us there. Could I have stayed longer, I surely would.

Room Tip: Go with the villas if you have a group.

This place was awesome. The villas were great and the premises was beautiful. The staff in our villa was fantastic. They (Raul, Celena, and Sonia) were fun, kind, responsive, hard-working, etc. Overall, a great experience.

What a treat to stay at the Half Moon! We stayed at the Royal Villas (ours was named Red Ginger) which included a butler, cook, and housekeeper and a private pool. Two minute walk to the beautiful beaches. Breakfast at the villa every morning was delicious. Dexton, the butler, made everyone in the building feel like family and anticipated our every need. A beautiful setting, outstanding weather. We ate at the Pepper Pot, Seagrape, and Sugar Mill restaurants and the food was outstanding. As were the drinks! We found the service to be quite good, very friendly, although a bit slower than we're used to in the states. Jamaica time, I guess! Transportation was by foot, bicycle, golf cart. Or you could just stay put if that's what you prefer. Have never been to an all inclusive vacation but would love to do it again. Especially at the Half Moon. Highly recommend!!

There is no denying that this is a beautiful property- elegant, genteel and impeccably maintained. I've stayed here twice in the last 6 months - in a hibiscus suite and more recently in a royal suite in the West Cottages which was a delight with my own private pool.

However, the food service, especially at the Seagrape is indifferent at best. I am not a buffet person and prefer ordering a la carte for breakfast but did so at my own peril. One shouldn't have to wait 40 minutes for an omelette, inquire as to its whereabouts three times, only to be brought something I didn't order when it finally arrived (I ate what was served me since I didn't have another 40 minutes to burn). Like another reviewer, I found the female servers at Seagrape to be unfriendly and sometimes downright hostile. Certainly not what you expect from a luxury resort charging luxury rates. I also found it bizarre and inappropriate that while I was in the lobby restroom, a housekeeping staff came in to clean and started knocking on closed stalls that were clearly occupied announcing "housekeeping."

Food - especially at the Seagrape - is mediocre and not on par with the steep prices charged.

This is a very pretty property with the potential to be amazing, but service and food are holding it back.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for sharing your candid feedback on tripadvisor; it was an absolute delight serving you again, twice in six months. We are disappointed that on this visit your Food & Beverage experience did not exceed your expectation. We have shared your comments with the F & B team whom I am sure will effect the necessary adjustment. We are totally taken aback with your comments regarding the Seagrape staff – this behavior is definitely not tolerated as we place high emphasis on training. I would like to further discuss any specifics with you – at your convenience could you please contact me at e-mail: scrichton@halfmoon.com. We truly appreciate you letting us know of the service delivery areas that did not live up to the true Half Moon standard.

I was a pleasure hosting you again, your Half Moon family looks forward to another opportunity to create an experience of a lifetime for you.

Yours sincerely,

Shernette Crichton

My husband and two children aged eight and ten stayed here over spring break in mid April. We had a great week and plan to return. It was our second visit, the first time was about 7 years ago without the kids.

I'll start by saying the grounds are beautiful and excellently maintained. The trip from the airport is short and hassle free, and the welcome is genuine (love that rum punch!)

We stayed in the Hibiscus Suites, just past the gazebo directly on the beach (106 & 106A)
We were promised adjoining rooms with the second having two beds for the kids. We arrived to find two rooms with Kings, which they remedied by having a second bed delivered and added -- a little tight, but it worked. Proximity to the pool, beach and lobby were perfect. There was one evening where we were enjoying downtime in our suites after a long day at the pool and were surprised to have a wedding taking place right beside our room on the beach, with wedding party members sitting on our balcony which was a little weird. We didn't mind so much but I imagine some would consider that an invasion of their privacy.

Activities at this resort are excellent though most involve added fees. My kids loved the swim with the dolphins in the private cove, and the horseback jungle ride was excellent, with healthy well taken care of horses and friendly knowledgeable guides. I took two spin classes and Trudy, especially, was excellent. My husband also had great things to say about the tennis instruction staff. The free bike rentals were awesome, we rode everyday and everywhere as a family which was nice.

With one exception, I found the staff at this resort to be exceptional. Everyone you encounter, from the bellhops to the bar staff to the maintenance crews greets you with a smile or engages you in some way. For some reason I found this not to be true at the Seagrape Terrace in the mornings, particularly with the female staff. I didn't find this anywhere else at Half Moon and was definitely the exception. Service was also super slow there. On a more positive note, particular standouts were Doneen at the pool bar, who was amazing with the kids and had a great sense of humor and the entire staff at the Cedar bar, Il GIardino and Pepperpot made us feel welcome and spoiled. Beach and pool attendants worked really hard and were extremely attentive as well.

We went back and forth trying to decide on how we would handle meals. All inclusive or a la carte. Dining at this resort is crazy expensive. The all inclusive would have been about 600 a day for our family of two adults and two children under ten. We opted not to go that route. That being said, seeing charges for $5.00 sodas got to be a little painful by the end of the week. We were trying to make this a healthy vacation, with a lot of outdoor activities and healthy meals - so we tried to avoid the excessive grazing over a breakfast buffet that is so tempting and order off the menu. Two days of waiting forever for menu items quickly had us switching over to the buffet...which is what I am sure they prefer. Think ten dollars for an omelette off the menu vs twenty eight for the buffet and you get the picture. The food was good, and varied - not sure I would give it the over the top reviews I saw from others, but then we eat out a lot at home. Our favorite was Il Giardino, outside watching the sunset, amazing. I would agree that their pastry chef is excellent. Beach BBQ was fun, I would make it a point to do that if you stay here.

Would recommend the off resort Catamaran trip we booked in advance through the concierge. A lot of fun with a great friendly crew.

My daughter and I got pedicures at the spa, while the staff were super sweet, we've gotten much better treatments at home for a fraction of the cost. Paint your toes before u go ...

All in all, this is a very nice family friendly resort. Just be prepared for what you will be spending beforehand and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: location of the Hibiscus suites is excellent

A wonderful hotel. Definitely 5 star from the food to the service to the accommodations.. I would return in the future. They offer a lot of activities as well. I would recommend taking a tour of the grounds if you don't have your own personal golf cart. It's free and you get to see the rest of the resort.

My wife and I spent six nights at Half Moon, and it was perfect for a relaxation holiday. The staff was very cordial, welcoming and hospitable. Drinks were well-made, beaches and pools clean and well-manicured, and the dining options were excellent, especially the Sugar Mill. If we ever get back to Jamaica, we would certainly book the Half Moon again.

Dear Valued Guests,

What beautiful review of your recent stay at Half Moon, A RockResot. We are happy you enjoyed your villa experience. The villas at Half Moon are the perfect choice for families, friend and business groups who seek the ambiance of a home away from home experience. The villas are dotted amongst the beautifully maintained gardens that give the area a feeling of a quiet country village. Some guests like the intimacy of the courtyard villas while others enjoy the impressive airiness of the plantation style. The villas are complete with a Butler, Cook and a Housekeeper to pamper you.

Thank you for the beautiful comment extended to the team, we will be happy to share same with them in particular Anthony the butler.

It was a pleasure hosting your group, we look forward to welcoming you back on business or with your family.

Yours sincerely,
