“Excellent Vacation!”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

We travelled as a couple from April 18-25 th 2014, we were in room B515, our room was dated, but clean, overall we were happy with it, our bed was comfy, we slept well all week. We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Sunset Beach. We stuck to the adult side of the resort and didn't really notice the kids that much, all seemed really well behaved. We did walk over to the waterpark side and it looked fantastic and we're planning on going back next year and bringing our kids. Food was good, breakfast was the best meal of the day. Lots of repeats for lunch and dinner but we always found something that was good. We had dinner at the Asian and Italian and enjoyed both. We also enjoyed our dinner during the beach party night. There was always something to do if you wanted to do something, lots of quiet time there too. We also liked that vendors come to the resort so we didn't end up doing any excursions, this was my fifth time in Jamaica and my husbands second, he was ok with just hanging out at the resort. The entertainment was awesome, the Steel Drum Band and the Group of male singers that sang some Motown were fabulous, as was the magician. Well done, best entertainment I've seen on a resort yet!! My husband and I have been to five star resorts and they're nice, but we're sold on this resort, the staff were fabulous, each and every one of them. You can tell that the staff like their jobs, which is nice to see and when people enjoy what they do it shows, this resort though dated is well loved by it's staff and you can feel that and that alone is worth every cent we paid. Like I said earlier, we're already planning our return trip, can't wait to go back!!

Room Tip: B515 was fine, Bay view. We didn't spend a lot of time in it though!

We visited this resort for the second time in April 2014. We thought our first vacation there was great two years ago - it was amazing this time around. The staff there is absolutely fabulous, and we noticed that a lot of the same people were there.

Yes, this is an older property. However, it is clean, and you can't walk from one end to the other without finding several people cleaning, painting or fixing something. The staff will bend over backwards to make sure you have a great stay.

Did I mention the staff yet? There isn't a single person in that entire resort that didn't make sure we didn't have a good time. The Kids Klub is absolutely amazing, and kept both our kids (4 and 6) entertained every day. The food is very tasty, and their restaurants are amazing.

We are looking forward to going back in 2015.

Great time at Sunset Beach. Everything from check in to check out was great. The atmosphere and casualness of the resort was most appealing. No worries mon for sure. The kids had a great time. The staff was excellent. The food was great. Always delicious fresh and exotic local fruit available. The pasta and omelet stations were great. There were several other restaurants to choose from at dinner that offered a welcome break from the buffet. We want to Silk Road 3 nights during our week. Also local places with free shuttle available. The nightly entertainment was awesome, wonderful local talent. The steel drum band was amazing. And the water park!! What fun. Plenty of places to lazily float by and duck out of the hot sun for a few minutes. Beaches were clean and plenty of chairs available. The water sport staff were awesome, free snorkeling, kayaking and sailing all day. For a family of four trying to choose a budget vacation, we scored a home run with this one. From other people we spoke to, upgrading to a suite or room at the adjacent Oasis would have been worth it. But, our basic room was still adequate, nothing fancy, great views. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Request a suite or a room in Tower B. Tower A is above the entertainment stage.

We were deplaned in montengo bay due to engine trouble and the airline put us in this hotel. Thank goodness we were only there for twelve hours. In the short time we were there we witnessed a very drunk girl puke by the elevator as her friends held her up, stray cats running on the inside of the resort near the restaurants, random people hanging out in front of the hotel. Customer service was horrible. We asked for bottled water and we were told they would get us a cab to a store. I knew they had bottled water but they front desk did not want to go out of its way for us. We also asked about cabs bc we were leaving the hotel at 5am to make a 7am flight, the front desk sent us to a person who said for a $20 deposit he would show up and drive us in the am, really??????
So after finally somewhat getting our transportation situation figured out we decided to go to bed. The beds do not have blankets only sheets. So we called for blankets and they brought us (2) very hard dirty blankets. After deciding to turn the air conditioner off and sleeping with the sheets we begin to hear very loud music which continued until 4am. So needless to say a very restless night.

Do not pay your money to stay at the hotel.

Dear Elisa R

We do understand clearly how very upset one would be if having gotten to the airport and boarded the plane they are deplaned and the flight rescheduled. They are not able to return home as planned. However these situations do happen and they are an inconvenience to many.

Sunset Beach Resort has always been a favourite of many of the airlines whenever such situations occur and they need us to accommodate their passengers. This is due mainly to the consistently good reviews that they receive from displaced clients we have accommodated as well as our close proximity to the airport. We pull out all the stops to ensure that, from the check in to the check out process is effortless as we know that their stay with us was not their choice.

Having investigated the situations noted in this review, it is important to provide clarity to ensure that our future guests are also informed. Thankfully Jamaica is world renown for providing safe and wholesome tap water. Regrettably we do not provide bottled water as an amenity for toiletry purposes; that is, to wash your face, hair, brush your teeth or to bathe as was requested. It is unfortunate that the amount we provided for personal consumption was considered inadequate and unacceptable.

It should be noted that there should not have been a request for a deposit as taxis are usually available 24 hours each day. We will discuss this up with our independent taxi operators to ensure this does not happen again. Airport transfers are normally arranged by the airline in situations such as these and it was clearly a misunderstanding that the guest was directed to our Taxi Desk. We note however that this situation was resolved instantly.

There is a bus stop across the street from the entrance to the resort. You will occasionally see staff members, taxi operators and other local residents and guests on the sidewalks going about their business.

Please keep in mind however that Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark is ideally located on a private peninsula that guarantees safe and secure environs.

We stayed the week of March 17th 2014 and found this hotel okay. We traveled with an 11 year old and a 18 year old. Hotel does need a facelift ..but we knew that upon booking. Overall both kids loved it...Small enough so kids were safe...one on the beach and one in the pool. There was always something for both of the them to do. Snorkeling was great ...lots to see. Nice if you can take your own snorkel equipment and get out before the kayaking and paddleboats ..lots more fish to see early a.m. plus water is pretty calm. You really don't even have to snorkel to see pufferfish and starfish because water is pretty clear you can see fish from off the shore! Good place to teach your kids how to snorkel. We stayed in room 508 B oceanfront We never spent a lot of time in the room ..except to shower and change prior to breakfast and to watch the beautiful sunset of the balcony and sleep. Room was not very big but we didn't complain! If you have picky eaters the food choice is limited...but there is something for everyone. Food was okay. I was just glad to be away and not have to cook! Staff members were all pleasant. Jordi on the beach was a cool guy! We never really left the hotel this time to explore ...kids didn't really want to leave. We did go to the hip strip one day and realized afterwards its cheaper to buy stuff at airport on way home plus you didn't really get hounded..it was still nice to explore outside of the hotel and see what happens in another country. The a la carts were okay...We have been to higher end hotels and have to wear the fancy dresses and uptight suits for supper...This hotel is more laid back and family focused no need to impress anyone. A very comfortable atmosphere...plus the price was right for this all inclusive holiday.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 508 B ..oceanfront...

We went here with another couple from April 6-13, 2014. My first time to Jamaica..It's a nice resort. If you're looking for a party resort though.. I suggest you stay somewhere else. This seemed like more of a family orientated resort and things usually got pretty quiet after 11 pm.
When we checked in they had us on the 4th floor... I wanted to be higher so I slipped her a $20 and we got to move to the 9th floor the next day. We were in 910a... Nice ocean view.
The rooms were typical rooms. I loved the towel sculptures but we only got them on the first day in our rooms.
The toilets in the hotel are a bit slow to flush but at least they flush.
The drinks were yummy! Lots of rum, rum, rum! Make sure you ask for a Jamaican smile drink. Yum!
I would suggest to bring a big travel mug from home though.. The cups are small there...
The bartenders are awesome. I had really bad heartburn and they gave me this gingery drink
concoction. Cured me! :)
The food was good. I loved the omelet bar at the buffet for breakfast. I also tried some of the Jamaican breakfast fair that they had...
The pasta bar at the buffet for dinner was pretty good also.
We reserved for the 3 a la carte restaurants but only made it to 1 of them as our excursions ran late and we were tired. The one we did make it to was excellent. Our server was great:)
The beach bar food was good.. You could get burgers, hotdogs, jerk chicken etc. Good for a late night snack.
We had a candlelight dinner on the beach one night.. Which I highly recommend. It felt very fancy. Lol.. The famous Jamaican cats watched us eat and there was so much food that they got their fill of steak and shrimp.

The entertainment was good. We missed a lot of it as we were off the resort a lot but one night they had a magic show... Pirate night and some kind of karaoke.
We sat in the beach under the straw umbrellas and smoked some 'herbs' we got on the bob marley tour and drank lots of rum while listening to the entertainment singers. Yes. The beach is nice at night too!
If you want a shade umbrella on the beach or in the pool area in the day I suggest you go early. People would 'reserve' lounge chairs with their towels and then be gone most of the time :-/
The beach was a bit thin and weedy in spots but hey.. It's Jamaica... All good mon!

If you're a smoker there is only a couple smoking areas..

The workers there were all great and very accommodating.

I only wish we would not have booked so many excursions so we could have spent more time on the resort.

All in all I'd have to say it was a great vacation at a nice resort. I would like to bring my children there.

Dear RosanneM,

Thank you for taking the time out to share your review on your recent stay at Sunset Beach Resort Spa & Waterpark. At first based on the rating we thought that you did not enjoy your stay with us but were very happy to see that you really did.

We appreciate your highlight of our two bartenders and will be sure to let them know about it.

We look forward to welcoming you again and hope that will be soon.
