I am a little late on getting this review, but late is better than never, right? My wife and I traveled to Jamaica for our honeymoon in June, 09. We had originally planned on going to Mexico, but changed it due to the swine flu breakout. We saw a lot of mixed reviews, but due to timing did not have too much time to book it due to flights going up in price and the timing of the trip.
Some areas of the resort need a facelift. The location of the resort is inconvenient if you want to do anything offsite. If you are a scuba diver like us, plan on a one hour trip each way to dive. If you want to go downtown, it is at least $20 each way and takes generally 20-30 minutes each way. You must make your food reservations first thing in the morning as they book up quick. Many people in the restaurants were not dressed to dress code--doesn't bother me but we were dressed up according to resort policies. The internet in their business center is VERY SLOW and it is even SLOWER if you try to get on from your own laptop in the lobby area, which is the only place for WiFi. We did not know until we got there that June is part of their rainy season--it rained every single day! The beach is very rocky, there are no waves. There is not much of a swimming area in the ocean before you start hitting vegetation. This was the biggest negative for me as downtime on the beach is where I like to spend a good portion of any trip I take. The women that work there are very cold and almost rude--on the flipside, the men who work there are VERY nice. I am not trying to sound sexist, it is just the way it was. A Cab driver told me that it is part of the Jamaican culture for women to not be as warm to avoid giving the wrong intention/having someone flirt with them.
Now, I know it sounds like I painted a very negative picture. That is not the case, the resort was AWESOME aside those things, some of which may not be a concern to others (location, beach, WifI, etc). So lets get to the positive things.
The resort is clean. The men who worked there weer very nice. They have a very large drink menu and can make almost anything that is not on the menu. The best part of this resort is the food--most all inclusive resorts I have been to have mediocre to poor food quality/taste. Not the case here! It was great! The fine dining restaurants were all phenomenal. The buffets were great. We tried many new things and liked most of it. We were blown away and probably gained a few pounds while on vacation. If you want to book excursions, do it when you get there and negotiate with the reps from all the companies who are there every day. This is a great resort for families, yet you can also go and have a romantic trip without being bothered by children. There are many things for children to do away from the adult stuff. We have agreed that we will go back sometime after we have kids. The resort is very safe and you do not have vendors and locals walking around bugging you like I have experienced at other resorts. The entertainment is great--the nightly shows have a lot of customer interaction. We had fun with that and won a couple of contests. The pools and hot tub were all nice and at the right temp. The lobby area was nice and very open, we met a lot of great people from around the world.
Unless you are used to staying at Sandals or Couples and getting 5 star quality resorts, ignore the negative reviews. Sure, I know we could have done nicer, but for this price, it was a great place to stay.
