“Great Resort+Great Staff = Great Time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2009

My husband and I just returned from Sandals Royal Caribbean and Private Resort and had an amazing time. We were there Dec. 13-18, 2008 and could not have asked for a better break from the kids, work and everyday life. We choose SRC over some of the other resorts because we liked the fact that it was so close to the airport, it had a private island to escape to, and it offered the opportunity to go to other Sandals resorts. We had read posts where people thought the planes were a problem but honestly we really didn't see that many. The 10 minute trip from the airport to the resort was well worth the few planes we saw! The lounge at the airport was very nice but they had things running so efficiently we barely had time for a Red-Stripe before we were being whisked away to the resort.

What really makes SRC a great resort is the staff. We have stayed at several other all inclusives and it really is all about the staff. The playmakers -- Joellene, Anthony, Marlon, Natassia (can't remember everyone's name:() -- were awesome! If you wanted to veg they weren't pushy and they were great at getting you motivated when you weren't sure whether you wanted to play or not. My husband had a blast playing pool volleyball and sand volleyball, darts, ping-pong and speed ball. I had fun watching;-) All of the staff at the resort was great. Leighton could not have been more helpful with our dinner reservations and little requests. Everyone was great. We also met a lot of great people at the resort especially Doug and Chris from New York and Ollie and Suzy from England.

I gotta give major kudos to our travel agent Amy McHugh of Dream Makers Vacation Services in helping us plan our trip. I haven't used a travel agent in years --instead booking my trips though on-line services -- and I can't say enough good things about her. Her knowledge and expertise of all the Sandals resorts in Jamaica was key in helping us make a decision. She put us in direct communication with the GM of the resort Iain and the upgrade we got was incredible! We will definitely be booking our next trip back to SRC through her!

The food was very good and the drinks were top shelf. You have to try a Jamaican Smile which includes banana mixed with several liquors - definitely a great way to start the day. The private island was one of the highlights of our trip. You really felt like you were on your own little island and the lunch out there was great. The Thai restaurant was romantic although the portions were on the small side. The pub was a lot of fun and the piano bar (I wish I could remember the piano player's name, he was fantastic!) was another highlight of the trip.

Well that about wraps it up. Great trip, beautiful resort, incredible staff, great travel agent. Can't ask for more than that! We will be back!

On Dec. 22 my husband and I flew off to Sandals RC in hopes of a beautifully warm and romantic Christmas that would be stress free. Our first time ever at a resort, we were dissapointed when we realized our room (beachfront royal grande luxe) was little more than than an average hotel room that usually can be purchased at 150 us dollars a night. The swimming pools were to cold to swim in. A couple of the bars gave poor service if you didn't tip (which your not suppose to). Our phone in our room didn't work...we reported it, but it was never tended to. Housekeeping wasn't very impressive either. I had to brush sand off my feet to put on shoes and to go to bed. One day I had to ask and wait for wash cloths so I could bath. Food was average on a whole. Entertainment not very impressive either.

Not to complain about everything, some of the workers were very polite and helpful. The island bar and staff were great. The jerk chicken was delicious.

Over all the best part of our visit to this resort was the royal thia island and the beautiful scenery and just relaxing together.

On a scale of 1-5, I would be nice to give this resort a 3.

We had an amazing time at Sandals Royal Caribbean! This was our first time to Jamaica and to an all-inclusive resort, but SRC has set the bar high.

1. Room - We booked the second lowest category room and expected to get what we paid for. We prefer to stay more nights than have an amazing room. Much to our delight though, we were upgraded, and our room was better than we could have imagined for the price we paid! We stayed in the newly renovated building 13. The bedroom and bathroom were large with his and her vanities and a jacuzzi. Our room also came with a large balcony with a table and chairs and two lounge chairs. Our only complaint about the room was that the jacuzzi and shower were not well designed. The showerhead was over the jacuzzi, and there wasn't a shower curtain or door and water got all over the floor.

2. Food - The food is comparable to cruise ship food. If you are like us and enjoy eating and trying new things then you will probably like the food, for the most part. We ate at the Regency two nights, the Pavilion, Royal Thai, Oleander at Montego Bay, and the le Jardinier. We had heard from here that it was hard to get into restaurants and that you needed to make reservations. We asked about this right away and discovered that two of the restaurants at SRC, the Royal Thai and le Jardinier do take reservations; however, none of the restaurants at SMB take reservations any more. I strongly recommend that you ask about the reservations on the first day. We were able to get in, but we heard from other couples who waited and were not able to. In addition, you never know when SRC or SMB will change their policies. The Regency had a great view overlooking the ocean and the Pavilion had a nice atmosphere. The Oleander at SMB was very romantic and had a more formal setting. Make sure you get to your restaurant early so you can have a table overlooking the water (same goes for the Regency). Also make sure that you know the dress attire for all the places as you are not allowed to wear flip flops at some places. At the Royal Thai there is not a menu, but we enjoyed the food and you get several different courses. Finally, le Jardinier had the biggest menu selection and was romantic and had great food. Don't order the lambchops if you're hungry - they were great, but a very small portion size. The escargot and creme brule wer e excellent! Our meals took anywhere from one hour to an hour and a half. The service was great, but it seemed like we always had to wait forever to get our waters refilled or a drink from the bar except at the Regency were the bar service and beverage service were excellent. If you are in a hurry for your drink from the bar, it is best to get it straight from the bar.

Breakfast was lacking. The made-to-order omelettes were good, but they start to get a bit old after a few days. We ordered room service one day, but it is the same food.

We found that lunch was the best at the Cricketeer. It is air-conditioned and the help is fun! We had some great meals there and were glad to get a break from the sun in there. I recommend the fish and chips. The buffet at the private island was also good, but not too many people seem to know about it. We weren't too impressed with the beach grill at the main beach, and we never ate at the buffet at the Regency.

3. Drinks - One of the best things about AI are the drinks! It seemed like we almost always had a drink in our hands as did everyone else. In the mornings, we used the pool bar a lot, in the evenings we used the piano bar, and in the late evenings we used the Cricketeer. Get to know your bartender early and try to go to the same one every time. This will ensure that you get quick and excellent service. We'd frequently get drinks before others since we had made such good friends with one of the bartenders (and no, we did not tip her). Also ask for their specials. You will get a chance to try some new drinks. Our favorite bartender was Sasha at the piano bar. She worked 5-11, and you definitely need to try her Sasha special!

4. Water Sports - This is one of the biggest reasons (minus the alcohol) that we chose Sandals. We love water sports and couldn''t wait for the opportunities to try different things. Don't be fooled by the sign with prices. Some thought you had to pay for the water sports, but the prices were for "extra" things such as fishing trips, etc. You must book snorkeling a day ahead of time, but hobie cats, kayaking, windsurfing, and hydrobiking are first come, first serve. We got lucky and were able to snorkel our first full day because the couple in front of us cancelled their reservations. It was a beautiful, calm day, and we went out on the boat to a reef just past the private island. The coral was great, but the fish were minimal. We were warned up front about this by our guide. He said that the Bahamas have much better snorkeling because Jamaica is overfished and didn't do a good job protecting its reefs. On the next day, we were snorkeling again, but it was extremely choppy. We went to a reef about fifteen minutes away that was within sight of SMB. The surf was so big and there weren't hardly any fish. They cancelled the rest of the trips that day and the next two days due to high surf. The guides were nice, but weren't overly friendly. The snorkeling is much better in Cozumel and other places in the Caribbean according to others we talked to. We love snorkeling and enjoyed it, but if this is one of your highest priorities, you probably want to look into other places than Jamaica. We heard that the scuba trips were similar, and they were also cancelled a few times due to the surf. We understand why they were cancelled though after the water came in over our boat on our way to our snorkeling spot!

As for the other water activities, we enjoyed kayaking two times. Be careful on a windy day though - it is a long paddle back in against the current! We sailed on the hobie cats with a guide four times, and we enjoyed having the guide with us after we saw others flip their hobie cats over. Greg was a great guide!

5. Entertainment - We weren't looking for much entertainment in the day, but we were hoping for some entertainment at night. We have cruised before and enjoy having a variety of options such as a show, casino, piano bar, etc. During the day, the playmakers have a few different activities, primarily table tennis, billards, pool volleyball, beach volleyball, and bouche ball. Some people enjoy participating in these activites, but we prefer to lay and drink or do watersports. The people who played in all the activities really seemed to be having a good time though. We did play bouche ball one time, and it was fun. As far as nightly entertainment, it is hit and miss and somewhat lacking. However, most evenings you are so tired from being in the sun that you don't mind the quieter atmosphere. Usually, they have some sort of entertained such as a singer or steel band followed by a game. It seems like everyone is tired and no one makes it to the piano bar at 11. We went two nights to the piano bar. One night we were the only ones there and left. On Christmas night, about a dozen people were there, and it was a good time. I did play Bingo one night and won a prize. We also ended up just walking around the property and the beach at night. We also enjoyed sitting on our balcony and listening to the music.

6. Beach - The beach is broken up into three different sections. One section is the main beach where most people hang out. We expected to have an issue getting beach chairs, but we never had any problems. While we were there, the resort was completely booked too. Even on Christmas day when everyone was at the beach for the arrival of Santa, it seemed like everyone had a chair. The other two sections are smaller, but more private if you'd like to be in a more quiet and isolated area. We saw a couple weddings take place on these beaches while we were there. There is also a beach on the private island. The main area there is a clothing optional beach, and yes, some people do take advantage of that. There is also a few small beach sections on the other side for people. We liked how the beaches were broken up and thought that it added to the beauty of the place.

7. Pools - They looked gorgeous, but we never got in any of them. It is "winter" time in Jamaica, and while the temperatures were warm every day, the pool was a tad chilly for me and why get in a pool when you have the ocean? There were people hanging out in the main pool frequently though. I am sure that if we were here in the summertime, I would use the pools.

8. Comparisions to SMB and Sandals Ocho Rios - We loved SRC and were high fiving each other on our excellent decision after we saw both these resorts! We went to SMB three times, and while the beach was much longer, SMB is not as pretty and has more peddlers. This is the only place we got offered weed at as well. Staff is no where near as friendly. As for Ocho Rios, we stopped there for lunch during an excursion to Dunn's River Falls (which we recommend). This resort is extremely large, looks older and not as well-kept, and had the worse staff and food out of all three. For being the biggest resort, the beach was extrememly small and very shady.

9. Staff - As by now I'm sure you know that we loved the staff at SRC! The majority of the staff are friendly and always ready with a hello or smile as you walk by. Many times we were asked if we needed anything when we were walking by or sitting.

The only negative incident we had occurred on our last night. One of the staff members volunteered all sorts of information about his life including that Jamaica is a jail, as he put it, and went on to tell us about how he is working so he can go to university and become a nurse in the US. We were enjoying talking to him, but then he openly told us he could use many US dollars if we had extra and how we would be helping him out. This was the first night we had met this bartender as the regular one had the day off. Most of the people who we talked to had worked there for a year or more, but this man had only worked there around a month. Maybe by the time we go back again, he will no longer be working due to this sort of behavior.

We never felt pressured to tip except for this one time. We did discreetly tip one worker who went above and beyond. After reading the forums, I realize that we should not have this as this worker could have been fired and that it could make more workers ask for or expect tips. If we were to do this again, we would ask for his address and mail it to him as we saw that was more appropriate.

10. Overall impression - We were nervous about going to Jamaica and thought that we would probably never come back again as we like to travel and see new places. However, one trip to Jamaica, and you know you have to go back again! We loved SRC, and we will probably only go back to that resort in Jamaica. The Jamaican people made our trip. They were fun, friendly, and helpful! Everything is so laid back that it is easy to leave your worries behind, and just sit back and enjoy yourself. Must be why they say "no problem, mon."

We stayed at the RC from November 19 to the 26th. It was a truly amazing holiday! Right from the Sandals lounge at the airport, to the fantastic room, the warm, fun and friendly staff, excellent food, beautiful beach.....I could go on and on and on!! Do make sure to make your reservations for the Thai and the French restaurants AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE, or you may not be able to get in during your stay! We had a blast with the entertainment staff - Marlon, Julienne, Nastasia and Anthony - but there were lots of couples who chose not to participate in the daily activities.I would highly recommend the canopy tour if you're not afraid of heights - it was the only excursion we went on and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The scenery was amazing! We didn't go into Montego Bay to shop - there is a market at the hotel on Friday's. Here's a tip though - we took the free shuttle to Sandals Montego Bay that day and there were tons more people at the market there - that's where we did the majority of our souvenir shopping. We were there close to the end of the day, and the crafters were all more than willing to barter. We wouldn't have spent a day at their beach, as the planes taking off are so loud you can't hear your own voice, let alone carry on a conversation with anyone else! If you like fruity drinks, make sure to try the "Miami Vice" - they call it "pain in the [--]" at the island bar - you'll find out why!

Where do I begin?! This was our first all-inclusive resort and our first trip to Jamaica. We weren't really sure what to expect. Every part of SRC far exceeded our expectations (except our arrival)!!

The resort and rooms were very well maitained and just beautiful. I liked the fact that SRC doesn't give you that "hotel" feeling, it looks and feels like a resort. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the bed was very comfortable, the jacuzzi bath tub was nice and the views are beautiful from all of the rooms we saw. We were upgraded to a Concierge room which significantly contributed to our visit. In the future we plan to only book a concierge room. The added service really makes a difference. At night we would fill out a slip with what we wanted for breakfast and when we'd like to have breakfast and in the morning we woke to breakfast in bed! We'd open the sliding glass door and have our breakfast while looking out at the aquamarine waters.

The entertainment was constant! Kudos to Antonio, the entertainment manager, he was certainly on the ball and one of the hardest workers there! He has the entertainer spirit which rubbed off on everyone. Thanks to him, even my husband got up and danced at the beach party, which normally NEVER happens. There are always events going on from talent competitions, to fashion shows, to sing alongs around a piano, to competitions around the pool. If you're not the type to join in, watching all of these things is just as entertaining!

The restaurants were fantastic! We personally enjoyed the food at the Pavillion as well as at the buffet on the island best. Unfortunately we didn't make a reservation at Le Jardiner on time and never got to eat there. If you go, be sure to make that one early. We did however get a reservation at the Royal Thai, which is on the island. The ambiance was fabulous but the food wasn't quite enough. The other restaurants didn't require a reservation and all served great food! We also took the shuttle over to Sandals Montego Bay, where we ate at Tokyo Joe's on the water. Great food, great service.

At first we rented a cabana on the island for a half day. After just 2 hours we extended that to make it a full day and then reserved it again for another full day! This may have been my favorite part of the trip. The cabana is a covered king size bed with pillows and flowers directly on the water. You have your own butler who gives you a cell phone so you can call him throughout the day if you have any requests. We had Kemar both times and he was just fantastic! If you reserve the cabana on the island, the bar is just a few steps away and they also have a very good buffet at lunch time. We prefered the island cabana (number 4) because it is more secluded. If you want, breakfast and lunch are brought to you, as well as a cooler of beer and water and sun block and tanning lotion. I HIGHLY recommend the cabana! (PS. do bring some money for a tip if you chose to reserve a cabana. While as a whole tipping is not allowed on the resort, tipping is allowed by management at the cabanas)

Last but not least, the Cricketers is where we went in the evenings to drink a few beers and grab a late night snack. Chevoy, who is one of the bartenders, took extremely good care of us and made our stay so much better! While all of the staff at Sandals Royal Caribbean were great, Chevoy became more of a friend to us than any of them! We had a really, really good time at the pub!

With all of the positives being said, we do have one BIG complaint! Upon arrival at the airport in Montego Bay we walked up to the Sandals lounge, where supposedly guests are greeted with a drink. We never even got to go in the lounge. Immediately a man with a cart came up to us, grabbed our luggage and said that there is a bus outside. We followed him out where he then DEMANDED a tip. My husband, not knowing the currency quite yet was caught off guard by the way the man said to give him money. He gave him what we later found out was equivalent to $1 US. The man then said "that is not enough". My husband said "I don't know what these bills are worth yet " and the man took what is equivalent to $14 US straight out of my husbands hand. This was a horrible way to be greeted by Sandals and we really really hope the resort does something to change this. Once we were on the resort however, things were not at all like this.

My wife and I just spent four glorious nights at the Royal Caribbean and can't wait to go back! This was our first all-inclusive experience, and it exceeded our expectations in every respect. The resort itself is absolutely beautiful and offers everything from a main beach and a central pool to smaller secluded beaches and quiet pools. Our favorite spot was the private island, and we spent much of our time there. Often we were some of the only people there, and the lunch there was some of the best food at the entire resort. Above all, though, I think we were most impressed with the level of service that we received at every turn! The people were extraordinarily friendly and very genuine. We would go back just to see some of them again! One note... The management of this resort has "relaxed" the tipping policy when it comes to butlers only. We had upgraded to a butler room (which was well worth the money, by the way), but we were not prepared to tip them. However, a welcome letter in our room informed us that we may want to tip the butlers. So, if you book a butler room, just be prepared. We actually had to leave the resort to get cash to tip them!

My wife and I just returned from Sandals Royal Caribbean and we would readily recommend this resort to others. Though a bit older, the grounds are well maintained and the rooms are nice. The bed was comfortable, the fridge stocked with refreshments, and we had a nice flat screen television, 37" or so. Our shower was not great, but no biggie, I did go to Jamaica to spend time in the shower. My wife and I are a very active couple, and though this resort was not as active as some other all-inclusives we have visited, there was plenty to do if you wanted... beach volleyball games, pool volleyball, trivia games and the like. There was also of course all your water activities, kayaking, water-trikes, sailing and such. The restaurants were good, not great, but good... we especially liked the lunches on the private island, which most folks don't know about. The service was great, and we really had good experiences with all the wait staff.
This resort is a romantic place to relax and just enjoy the person you are in love with. Again, it is not for the super active, but for those looking for a relaxing, beautiful, quiet place to enjoy the one you love, some good food, plenty of drinks, some peace and quiet and tranquility with just a bit of activity, this is a great place.
Also, the workout room was well equipped and airconditioned, and the private island was really nice. If you go, make sure you visit some of the restaurants at the neighboring Sandals Montego Bay... you don't need reservations and there are some good eats there.
