“Enjoyable”
Reviewed 5 April 2011

It has been 2 months since I have been at the Inn, but not a day goes by that I think of all the wonderful people that make your time at the Inn the most relaxing and "enjoyable" My husband and I have been travelling to the Inn for the past 4 years. We already made arrangements to go back next year. I Love all the Sandals Resorts in Montego Bay but my favorite is the quiet Inn.

Kaveen the guess loyalty manager did a great job making us feel at home with some pleasant surprises without her it might be a different experience .A special thanks also to Mark the room service guy and Paris the pool guy and our maid Zedrine and Devon the maitre'd at the bay restaurant. Now a special thanks o Salabie the assistant chef for making a couple meals memorable. We did notice food quality and purse string tightening more so then last year. For example asked for rum and raisin ice cream in early part of stay and then after and told it was going to be ordered but each time same story never got it, they would of been better off saying they were not getting it. The food not gourmet like sandals says there chefs can only do so much with what they have to work with. For us the staff and size of the Inn is appealing. They cancelled early shuttle so that would make it impossible to get to other resorts for breakfast but thanks to Leon from the UK that was solved after taking is vacation time to meet with Sandals management. Another 2 wk vacation enjoyed in Jamaica and hope to get back next year if possible.

Room Tip: Grows on you and because of staff great

We flew into Mobay 3/16-3/23 and were at the hotel in less then 45 minutes enjoying our 1st of many cocktails. Both coming and going from the airport went very smooth and quick. Maybe because we came and went on a Wednesday??? Let me start out by saying, that we had a great time!! We stayed at Sandals Carlyle because we were on a tight budget. This is a very economical way to enjoy all three resorts in Montego Bay. We had requested a room facing the mountains, because I had read that the rooms facing the pool/beach are noisy. This is a understatement. There is constantly car horns/alarms/ music... So if you are a light sleeper like I am, this is a problem. Well, we got one of these rooms on the 1st floor facing the pool (104). We requested a different room immediatley and they were able to move us to the 3rd floor (322) after 3 days. The rooms are night and day. The first floor in not renovated (old carpet, a bathroom needing an update, but very clean). The 3rd floor was very nice and renovated and facing the mountains- VERY QUIET!!! There are only a few rooms that face the mountains (322, 224, and 223). The Carlyle is more like a very small hotel. We basically ate breakfast there and then took a shuttle to the other two resorts. The 1st shuttle is at 10:30, but if you have a reservation for scuba, snorkeling or any other water sport at the other resorts (they start at 9:00), you can talk to the front desk the night before and they will arrange for a taxi at no charge to take you there. The shuttles leave right on time or earlier if full. Get there a few minutes before as we had to pay our own way from SMB to SCI for $5 per person due to a full shuttle and not wanting to wait another hour. SRC to SCI is $4 per person. We did not stay at the Carlyle during the day, but when we left around 8:30, all of the chairs had towels on them. The food here was good- you're basic breakfast food which is hard to mess up. We had a Return Guest dinner (surf and turf) here and this was excellent!!! The beach across the street, about 50 yards long, is public and there are always locals enjoying the ocean. Overall, this is a nice property, but nothing like the other Sandals. We also read that you can bring an unlocked cell phone, buy a new SIM card (under $10) and some minutes, but my phone did not work. There is a Digicel just down the road, maybe 5 minutes away. Right next door- I forgot the name of the restaurant was internet service $5 for 15 minutes. Just enough time to send a quick email off to the kiddos. We also did a little souvenir shopping behind Digicel. Everyone wants you to see their stuff. We felt very safe and they expect you to negotiate prices with them. If you know you will be spending very little time in your room, I would save your money and highly recommend going to this place. The shuttle is not a big deal (10 minutes away) and you can enjoy the other two properties. A quick note, if you are looking to work out here, I would reconsider. It is not air conditioned, the machines are old and the free weights are liitle to be desired. The other 2 resorts have very nice workout areas!
SMB- very nice beach. We spent a few days here and mostly lounged at the far end by the small swim up pool. I don't know if many people know about this area because it was much quieter and not as crowded. They had 2 lounge beds that were for anyone. A few huts (usually reserved, but when no one was there, we used them). Trees for shade, a small swim up pool and hot tub, tables and chairs. We loved this area and when we were looking for a more livlier atmosphere, we went to the other end of the beach. There are many chairs and we had no problem finding one any time during the day. My husband went scuba diving here and said it was great. It was very windy this week and a lot of the water sports had been canceled except for the day we left. It was still a little windy/rough, but the snorkeling was also good. Food was very good. We also had a couple massage here . AWESOME!!! Maxine is great at deep massages!

SRC- Much smaller beach area, but a lot more trees for shade. Like i said, it was very windy, but when we went out to the island it was not as bad. It was quiet over here as well. On the main side, they had a raft in the water which was nice to lay out on. The had a decent size swim up bar/pool with about 20 nice, cushony loungers. Food here was good as well.

*** favorite cocktails: Dirty Banana, Jamaican Smile, Flip Flop, Blue Lagoon, Purple Rain, ...So many to choose from. Bring an insulated mug to keep your drinks cold.

I have traveled extensively, and I have never run across a hotel that makes you feel so much like a part of their family. Yes, the Carlyle is old. Yes, the bathrooms are mediocre. Yes, the noise on weekends from the public beach across the street is loud. I did not care. The quality of the staff at this resort is absolutely SUPERIOR. We had the mose perfect stay, and what little nitpicky things that I could have complained about were dropped by the wayside. I was having too good of a time to care. I have stayed at many 5-star resorts, and the Carlyle is not one. However, I would return tomorrow to the Carlyle if I could, and I cannot recall the name of the most of the 5-star resorts I have stayed in. Here are tips: you can stay here and play at the other two Sandals resorts in Montego Bay with transportation between the resorts included - this means you never get bored. If you want a chair by the pool at the Carlyle, book it early! Travel only in Montego Bay through the Hotel, they check you and check you out for each trip and keep very good tabs on you. Order room service for breakfast. It is included and fast and fabulous. Get to know the other guests. This is one of most enjoyable reasons to stay at the Carlyle. There are only 52 rooms and you get to know the other travelers well. The staff is uncomparable. They set the mark for all other hotels I have visited. Desrick, Xavier, and Joseph made our stay so memorable. If you need anything, the staff will accomodate you immediately. It is absolutely amazing to behold. Don't let the negative critiquing of Montego Bay sway you. It is beautiful. And, while the Carlyle doesn't have good views of the beach, and you will get a good view of what life is like for the locals, you will receive the most exceptional care, and be able to see grand beach vistas after spending 15 minutes in their free transporation to MoBay and Royal Caribbean. P;us, the staff at the Carlyle is far superior to the other resorts. So, for the value, the Carlyle is tops!

Room Tip: Reserve a Superior Deluxe Room.

Location was horrible and in the ghetto. Roomed wreaked of cigarette smoke. Husband got robbed right out front of resort. Flight home, which was booked through Sandals as a package flew into JFK but our next flight flew out of Lagaurdia! I didn't realize it until we were leaving Jamaica. It was a three hour and $100 cab ride ordeal to get to the other airport. Had the next flight been on time we would have missed it. What company would ever have a person fly into one airport and leave out of another, especially when customs are involved? Never again.

The service here is wonderful fantastic can't say enough on how great the staff is! It is smaller than the other 2 resorts you can take a shuttle to and from the others throughout the day and evening only about 10-15 minutes away. The others (Royal Caribean and Montego bay) have more to do like private beaches, more pools more activites but at the Carlyle you get to know the staff very well and feel like they are family. The room we had at the Carlyle was nice but the bathroom did not meet the quality of the rest of Sandals. They need to have a makeover on this bathroom not sure if the others are like this. Beach across the street is public very loud and dont recomend going there, go to the other resorts via shuttle they have private beautiful beaches. As for Sandals in Jamaica overall I would recomend it very highly.

Sandals Carlyle Inn was a wonderful first Caribbean experience. The staff was more than accommodating and the service was incredible! We loved the entertainment directors and the bartenders as they were more then good conversation. The food was delicious as well. The only thing that would make us stay at either Montego Bay or The Royal Caribbean next time was the atmosphere. It felt like we were the only couple under the age of 40 so we spent a lot of our time at the other resorts. The other resorts also had a great nightlife where we would catch shows, dancing, and a younger crowd. It was nice to come back to the Carlyle though... Our room also reminded us of a motel on the strip in Tampa Florida. It was carpeted and the bed was covered in that uncomfortable/scratchy duvet cover. Also, our TV was broken the entire trip and even when we told front desk attendants, it never got fixed. Good thing we didn't watch much TV while there.
