“Thanksgiving trip 2013”
Reviewed 1 December 2013 via mobile

We spent our Thanksgiving this year in Jamaica, and what a wonderful time to visit! The weather was outstanding (average of 83-87 degrees) and the staff at Secrets St. James made us feel so at home! The staff is dedicated to ensuring their guests have an outstanding stay by hosting multiple activities during the day, and at night, providing non-stop hospitality, and giving guests a taste of their beautiful culture (jerk chicken and fresh coconuts right off the tree were out of this world)! A special thank you to Ryan, Michael, Jeremy, and Sparks for making our stay extra special, and our drinks extra strong!

We just returned from a week at Secrets St James in Montego Bay. We have visited Jamaica before but this was our first stay at Secrets. Being close to the airport was great, 20 minute drive and very easy check in followed by a serenade by Jeffery our bellboy and we are in our room. Rooms are just like the website, funky bathroom and all. We had a walk around and quickly found all the bars, restaurants, beaches and pools. This is a larger resort but there are lots of different options for hanging out each with a different vibe. Some quieter beaches, pools with non stop activities, relaxing pools, something for everyone. Same at night time, alot of choices for places to eat and styles of food, and music all night long, from the piano bar, live bands on an outdoor stage and a disco later at night. We were there on US Thanksgiving and the resort went all out to make the American guests feel at home. A parade with a marching band, football all day and turkey buffet at night. Very thoughtful.

Pros of this resort:

Variety of Restaurants--alot of restaurants to choose from and no need for reservations, and even though it was full, we did not wait to be seated. Some others did, but the way the resort is set up, the piano bar is the central location, so you could have a drink while you waited for your table. For a more peaceful wait, the lobby bars were also nice for a pre or post dinner drink.

The biggest plus is the staff....they are all wonderful, always smiling and willing to help. From the gardeners, bar staff, servers, entertainment team...all fantastic.

Drinks-lots of variety but lots of sugar in the "girly" drinks, I would recommend Jamaican Smile, Iceburg and the mojito. Top shelf alcohol available in the lobby bars and piano bar but you have to ask.

Public areas and washrooms were all clean and well maintained, quite a feat given the number of people coming and going and dragging sand everywhere.

No haggling with the locals for anything (anyone who has been to Negril will see a huge difference here, there are craft vendors who come to the resort but very laid back attitude)

Cons: the resort was quite busy and I get the feeling that the housekeeping staff is overworked.
Our room was clean when we arrived but it was not cleaned at all for 2 days in a row and we were out of the room for 7 hours each day (and we had not left the privacy light on) First day, I called housekeeping to get coffee for our coffeemaker as we were all out and 5 hours later still nothing. Called again when we returned to our room after dinner and we got lots of coffee within minutes. Next day, out of towels, toilet paper and glasses, I visited the lobby and the housekeeping supervisor was called and our room was cleaned within the next 20 minutes. The staff were responsive to my requests but at a place which advertises "unlimited luxury" I was expecting the basics to be covered without my having to ask repeatedly. I would have given this resort a 5 rating if not for this inconvenience and the time we wasted trying to get the most basic of service. Having said that, once the problem was pointed out, it was quickly corrected.

Food is very tasty but the desserts could stand improvement, not really worth the calories.
House wines are okay, but not really on par with what we have had at other resorts.
Coffee at the Coco Cafe was excellent but subpar everywhere else.

Overall, I would return, no resort is perfect and this one has done alot of things right, just a few wrinkles to sort out but nothing that would ruin your holiday. My advise is to speak up if something is not up to par.

We stayed at Secrets St. James for our honeymoon in November 2013. My husband and I had an amazing time, everything from the room, to the service to the food was over the top! We enjoyed everything the resort had to offer such as the spa, snorkeling, dinner on the beach. We book our excursions right at the hotel which made it very easy! We will be back next year for sure!

The resort is beautiful! The staff is the nicest I have ever encountered in all of my travels. And they are genuinely nice-not just to get tips. Rooms awesome, gorgeous beaches, pools. Amazing food! The grounds were kept perfect. Everyone is so hard working. Special thanks to Stephanie in the St James Preferred Club. She worked so hard with my husband to plan several surprised for my birthday. Everything worked out perfectly. The waiters at all the restaurants were great. The spa was really nice and massages were good. Best food ever at an all inclusive. We enjoyed the snacks in the preferred club. Best cheesecakes-and we are from Philly so that says alot. Go to this resort. Its beautiful, relaxing, and you will have an amazing time.

The property is beautiful. The shopping is way overpriced, but I had no choice since i forgot my beach bag. I paid $31 and at the airport is was $18! The drinks are ok if you ask for light alcohol. It is cheap so it ruins the flavor of the drink if they add too much; which they will if you don't say something. The people on the property are very nice and helpful. Our room was very damp so after three nights of waking up sweaty from the dampness. I asked for a dehumidifier. The last night was finally a dry sleep. Don't try the burgers as they are not really an american hamburger (not even sure if it is real beef). The best food was the jerk chicken cart, homemade potato chips at the grill and my papaya and hearts of palm salad at El Patio. The Himitsu was the best overall restaurant but the steak was lacking on the hibachi. The entertainment there was really good though.

We have stayed at another Secrets resort, and this one did not disappoint. If you like Jamaican cuisine, you will love the restaurants, for even though they are themed French, Mexican, Asian, etc., they all kind of taste Jamaican, which wasn't bad.
The spa had wonderful hydrotherapy pools prior to our massages, which were also excellent.
The beaches were beautiful and the bars were breezy and open. Do not miss the pina coladas! The room was open and clean. The bed was GREAT! My only complaint of the room is that the toilet and shower facilities are only closed off to the rest of the room by an opaque glass door and sheer curtain, so it didn't leave much for privacy.
The people were friendly, the staff was on top of things, but service is at a more relaxed pace than Americans typically expect. Great couples get-away!
