Just returned from Secrets Saint James in Jamaica. Hotel complex was beautiful and lots of lovely pools. Restaurants were really good although it would have been nice to have a buffet choice for the evening as well. Although some were closed in the evening when they were meant to be open.
Most of the Resturant staff were very good and couldn't do enough for you. Guy on the omelette in the morning was brilliant.
Negatives wifi was really expensive and patchy most of the time.
We did find the reception staff sometimes not really helpful. Entertainment staff really good.

Room Tip: Go for a higher floor.

There are not enough superlatives to describe our recent vacation at Secrets St. James in Montego Bay, Jamaica. What a beautiful resort! Lush, spotless, delicious, entertaining and breathtaking are a few of the words to describe this property. Yes, I'm a travel agent, and truth is, I can choose any resort I want. I CHOOSE SECRETS! The staff is the heart of this resort, from the general manager on down, these people seem to enjoy pleasing guests and making their visit to Jamaica a vacation of a lifetime.

We usually remember the names of our favorite bar tender, wait staff or entertainer, but at Secrets St. James the housekeeping staff, the gardeners and kitchen workers do their jobs with that same, wonderful enthusiasm that makes Jamaica my favorite island in the Caribbean. For example, Pauline, our housekeeper, worked while limping along on her very sore foot, getting injections, (ugh), and smiling at me every day. Nothing was too much trouble for her. I'm the person who wants fresh robes every few day....no problem!

The daily entertainment at our pool was perfect. Not too much, just enough to allow me to read my book but to stay involved in the current activity. Genius, Mello, Al, Inch, and Cassie kept us energized and ready to party at a moment's notice.

The food was very good, even excellent. The Mexican restaurant was great, as was the Italian and Jamaican. Breakfast buffets left nothing to be desired. They make a crème and egg casserole that is to die for. Jerk cart, fruit wagon and coconut cart all day long along the pools and beach. Coco Café was perfect for my late afternoon coffee.

Did I mention that the Monday night football games are shown on a huge screen on the beach and on Thanksgiving each bar showed a different game? Check the schedule, show up and root for your favorite team!

The house band is wonderful for dancing under the stars. Some nights there was also (not instead of) a dj playing in the courtyard. All entertainment is outside unless it rains. At Secrets they also have a real theater with a traditional stage and seating. The only difference is the seating is comfortable and has tables between the seats for your drinks.

Oh...do try VIP Club MoBay for special treatment at the airport for arrival and departure. It is a wonderful way to start or end your vacation.

I could go on and on....Happy Travels....Suzanne

My friend and I were so looking forward to luxury, five star dining, entertainment and a feeling of being (home).
I had read previous trip advisor reviews we anticipated our 'welcome drinks and Jerk chicken' but no, there were none, oh well. The staff courteously informed us our room was not ready yet and we were told to take a seat on the sofa, sweat pouring and no drink, until we mentioned it. a bit bewildered we waited and waited then asked again, half and hour, room ready we were brought to our room.
as this review might be quite long I will continue in pro's and con's

Con's

Room needed dusting/proper cleaning especially around the sinks, grubby curtain around the bath

$15 wifi for 24 hours

A fridge well stocked and restocked but with warm drinks, until we discovered after the second day that it was not plugged in. (we moved the cabinet to look behind it). domestic laughed when we told her.

No welcome secrets dressing gowns, until we asked

Flick the tv channels with CAUTION, PORN that made our eyes nearly pop out, had to get the engineer to block the channels, I am still traumatised. Lol

Room smelt like a sewer most of the time, coming from the toilet

Entertainment. Well we might be real fussy, but it was very mediocre. no where to sit, ended by 10:30 not much to do after that unless you liked singalong. felt like a curfew.

Dining was ok. too much concentrating on design, than real flavour. Breakfast was the best for us both, ok choices and some kind of authentic Jamaican breakfast.
Some staff were obviously partial to certain guests from certain backgrounds, I cannot express this enough and this MUST STOP its 2013. Experience some real bad service from two waiters, My friend asked for hot chocolate and I was ignored and when I brought this to the waiters attention he just assumed we both wanted hot chocolate, as we witnessed other diners offered a selection of hot drinks. Second day more bad experienced until the supervisor had to intervene offering apology and something to make up for this experience? We told him we expected the same treatment as everyone else. respect and courteousness and mostly to listen. you know, normal treatment. Don't get me wrong most of the staff were genuinely lovely, great and professional but when your assigned waiter is off key, its going to be a unpleasant start to the day and overall experience.

What's with all the belting songs across the dining room, what about the spitting and the inability of guests to hear each other speak. We found it quite embarrassing but then again maybe we were too fussy and maybe we may have liked a quiet dining experience at times.

PROs,
We have the money. the choice, next time maybe we book somewhere else that we feel we may be genuinely seen as a paying guest entitled to all staff 'happy to serve us' I am a Jamaican female living in the uk and my friend is a Trinidadian also from the uk seeing Jamaica for the first time.

Room Tip: Higher to floor the better the view

My friend and I just got back from a fantastic time at Secrets St. James. The room was very clean and spacious with a spectacular view.

The staff was outstanding from the minute we walked into the lobby, they couldn't do enough to make sure we had everything we needed at all times. The Entertainment staff was the best; Genius, Mellow and Lifeguard Michael are great! The bartenders also made sure we never had an empty glass.

The food was also very good at every restaurant we dined at, I thought Bordeaux was the best of the choices. This resort gets and deserves a 5 star rating.

The one drawback, if you're not traveling with your mate and just a friend, it's pretty much an all couples resort.

I will back!
Liz

I had 45 guests stay here for my wedding for one week. It was amazing- I have nothing but great things to say about the entire resort & staff. They did whatever it took to make my dreams come true. The only thing I would suggest would be to bring your own photographer if you are picky about pics & video the ones supplied in the wedding package aren't amazing, but they are par. Big shout out to our server poolside, Erica- you are awesome!! The resorts wifi is also spotty & the staff did not know about the secrets app on the website you are told to download for free internet & calling. So those are my only 'complaints' but even those are very minimal. Please remember when reading reviews - no resort can please everyone and as far as I am concerned YOU make YOUR OWN FUN! YOU will decide whether or not you will have a good time. Just let loose and have fun, you are on vacation!! The weddings office staff, servers and DJ Blu were so amazing. They partied with us! We loved that. Everyone that travelled in my grp said it was the best resort they had ever been too. We will definitely be going back. Well done and thank you! :) -xo-

Just back from a weeks holiday at Secrets St James and I couldn't speak more highly about this place. It is perfect. Please disregard any negative comments about the staff as they are wonderful (rudeness was highly likely to have been the abrupt holidaymaker), cleanliness of the room (the holidaymakers expectations likely unreasonable and better than their own home) and food (Michelin Star expectations)
Check in took about 20 mins as about 20 groups arrived at the same time. Relax have a drink, chill out, don't downgrade the hotel because you had to WAIT.
We didn't upgrade to Preferred as we didn't see it as value for money. Room was on 3rd floor and was large, clean, luxurious for a beach type holiday. Great view.
Pools, surroundings, and beaches are well maintained and spotless.
The majority of restaurants and bars are on the Wild Orchid side of the complex. The whole place has a one resort feeling
Plenty of top shelf spirits in the main lobby bars, whilst more limited at the pool bars. The restaurants attempt a fine dining experience which they largely achieve, though taste is an individual thing. We liked the majority of our meals esp French and Asian.

There are a few things the resort could work on
Wi-FI There is no free wi-fi and the cost to pay is very expensive. This I feel is unnacceptable for a resort of this standing. Whilst not a deal breaker now, this is something the resort must address asap
The policy is to place the significantly inferior Carib beer in the mini bar. This feels like penny pinching.
The wine was only ok
The Steakhouse and seafood restaurants were closed for 3 nights at the end of our stay which meant we never experienced them. Once again this is unacceptable, the resort management should provide patrons with 7 days advance notice of restaurant closures so that guests can plan accordingly.

On the whole I would say that this is the best all inclusive resort I have been to, and a great benchmark
