We stayed at the Riu Palace, Jamaica in Montego Bay for a week. This is our third Riu. It has only been open since December so everything is fresh and new, including the staff. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. The food was very good and what was new to us was they didn't require reservations for the specialty restaurants. This is a first for us, as the dreaded line up from 8:20 a.m. to make your dinner reservations for the day was eliminated. They still had two seatings and it was a first-come, first-served affair that worked surprisingly well. I can see from their prospective the advantage of the reservations, but from a patron's view this was much better. Besides, the buffet was very good, too. The advantage to the restaurants was you tended not to eat quite as much as you were paced a little slower and your food had a chance to "hit bottom" before you were up after the next trip around the buffet.
The bathrooms are open to the main room, closed off by a curtain at the bathtub, but the toilet has its own little room. So shower noise and sink noise are unavoidable.
We had some minor issues with housekeeping as it seems they could use more linen when they are full, and they were full much of the week we were there. A smallish resort with about 210 rooms, but connected to a much larger one for all of the activities and entertainment you could possibly ask for. Palace patrons were free to visit connecting Riu but they were not permitted to come to the Palace. It also had higher quality alcohol than the Riu Montego Bay it is connected to. The Palace is adult only which suited us fine. I'm told the beach is also better here as the one next door had a lot of weeds.
Being a scuba diver, I only went for a couple of dives. The staff at Scuba Caribe located on the Montego Bay Riu property were very good. James Brown and Obie took good care of me in the water, and the plethora of girls in the kiosk looked after me on land. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot to see underwater as residents fish the waters for food. Lion fish are present and if they don't aggressively attack them the island will suffer more and soon.
Location was good and bad. Only 10 minutes from the airport so transportation was quick, but it is under the take-off flight path and some of the jets in use are older ones and quite loud. They took off from mid to late morning, fairly steady until late afternoon, sometimes about 5-8 minutes apart.
There are two pools, the "quiet" one with the swim-up bar where the water aerobics take place at noon, and the other one where volleyball is played. The quiet pool also has some unique shade structures with movable coverings, which we found very handy.
The sports bar is open 24 hours for drinks and snacks and even had the gold medal hockey game on Sunday morning!

Room Tip: My opinion the rooms on the opposite side of the adjacent hotel would be quieter, as would those ove...

What a great hotel. Amazing staff!!! We would like to say thank you to Karen, Clive, Rochelle, Krissan, Dwight, Abraham for their excellent service. They took care of us during all our 2 weeks stay. Food was excellent especially the Kristal restaurant. We enjoyed it so much. Take the time to ask to Tyron to sing you a song!! He has a beautiful voice believe us!!! We also preferred the buffet as it always had lots of selection. Take the time to go by Wednesday and you will eat lobsters tails on the buffet. We would love to go back again for sure!

We completely lucked out on this trip! I stumbled upon the resort while looking for resorts in Jamaica without a long trek from the airport.

The hotel is 100% as depicted in the photos. It is beautiful and very modern. There is always someone out there who will find something wrong with a place, but I can honestly say nothing stood out for us. The food is phenomenal, we ate at all of the restaurants and the buffet. We thought the buffet was as good if not better then the restaurants as it has endless selection and lets you try bits of everything. The beach (although small and man made) was beautiful, the cove keeps the water from getting too rough and the temperature was perfect. We loved that you could go down to the beach or pool (depending on your preference) at any time of day and find a beach chair. As far as staff goes, where do I even begin. For breakfast and lunchtime Audley was always around and extremely fast and helpful, he had an amazing and radiant attitude that could brighten up anyone's morning. For lunch and dinner Garth's smiling face was always around, he never forgot your name and always replenished your drinks before you even asked. We also met a very amazing woman that resets the tables, Arlene, she has a warm heart that makes you feel even more comfortable then you already are, she also offered great service and went above and beyond - they should definitely make her a waitress as she would be amazing! The hostess Keisha is also a wonderful woman, her attitude is great and we loved that she made us feel very welcome while dining. I think these staff members are the type of people that the Riu should fight to keep around, their attitudes and interactions with guests are what keep a resort from blending in with the rest. The experience of a Riu Palace is a special one since it comes with a lot of luxuries (top shelf alcohol, constant service) but having such a great staff puts it over the top.

In summation - we would go back in a heart beat!

Our only pet peeve was the fact that guests go on these trips and think they dont have to tip staff members for their service. If someone is serving you drinks on the beach and you dont want to pay/tip for it, get up and walk to the bar yourself. Don't go on a trip like this if you can't afford a mere $100 (for a couple) in gratuities.

This was by far our best experience in Jamaica- having been here many times this says a lot about this hotel and there staff. Right from the start we felt pampered and special- registration was a breeze and Julian did everything we could ask to get us setup and in our room.

Meals- don't listen to those who complain about the ala cartes, yes there are only 4 and they are 10-12 tables per seating but keep in mind this is a very small hotel 250 rooms. Another correction on other posts- they only close 1 location per night on a scheduled rotation. They changed the reservation policy so you show up just before opening and first come first served- we were able to eat and any of them as we prefer the later seating- that said we preferred the buffet as it always had lots of selection and it seems Wednesday night they have lobster tails on the buffet- these we huge and you could take as many as you wanted. The breakfast buffet was great, the lunch was very good too- all the servers take great care of you- Neville, Sahandain and the others always welcome you with a great smile and insure you have drinks and are served the entire time you are there. We did eat at Krystal and Trevarda was great- I had the lamb and my wife had the beef both were excellent- also get the leek and shrimp soup. You can also order lunch at the Aqua Bar- small menu with wings, burgers, clubs and pastas and salads- very nice spot overlooking the beach and sea.

The pools and beach are always kept very clean- the swim up bar pools was a little louder than the other one so depending on what you are looking for there is always many loungers to choose from. They always have ample chairs and these neat covered beds spread around the property for lounging. Benny and Lorenzo always tried to get you involved with activities and the pool volleyball was a fun hour of laughs and a little exercise, not much but...

This is a new property so the natural shade is still growing but they have other options, umbrellas and pergolas in place until the palms get bigger. The entire time you are sunning the staff look after you- Odean and Natasha are great but Clive's constant smile and laugh is contagious- you can't help but enjoy his company. Drinks we're always great and you never had to get off the lounger if you did not want to.

The lobby bar was a great spot to cool down or start your night. They have a great drink menu with a good martini list and premium selections- Fabian and Dwight always made a mean drink and Neval worked the floor ensuring all people were looked after. It had a outdoor section for those who like cigars or wanted to enjoy the warmth. This spot had live bands as did the Aqua bar- they seems to switch nights based on weather and schedules.

The rooms were very modern and well appointed- we had a courtyard view which also had a view of the sea and beach. This room had a separate shower, large jacuzzi tub and king size bed safe and fully stocked fridge and liquor dispenser- note the fridge is stocked with Carib Beer which is good but other requested Miller Light or Red Stripe- the fridge is always topped up with ample water, coke, sprite, soda, tonic and orange pop. Nighty turn down with a Jamaican Proverb and candy was great and the maid service was excellent- great rooms and service.

All in all this hotel was great- at the price it is the best option for both 5 star and adults only- you also have the Riu Montego Bay next door at you disposal as you can go there but they can't come to this resort. We did walk over but found it very busy, loud and decided to return back to the quiet side ASAP.

As the title of my review states- the staff make this place, from the cooks behind the buffet with there singing and smiles, the wait staff always made you welcome, the entertainment staff were just that and the bartenders always were there for you and made some great drinks. The front desk staff always said hello when you walked by and made change when needed.

This is a great Riu- I hope they retain the staff and feel they have now, as it can only get better, it's close to the airport, has shopping across the street and is in between many attractions with golf very close by. If there was one thing to say on a negative side but which can't be helped- they are right in the take off path of the airport but this too seemed to not be to bad.

Room Tip: Top floor has a better view of the beach and grounds and can be quieter.
