“"You're on vacation, mon"”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

My husband grabbed his suitcase after the taxi dropped us off at Jamaica Inn., preparing to take it to our room himself. We had just finished checking in, and within seconds, a resort employee relieved my husband of his bag. “You’re on vacation, mon. We’ll take these for you.”

And so went our five days at the grande dame of resorts on the north shore of Jamaica.

It is the service that sets this resort apart. And it seems as if those who work at Jamaica Inn truly are happy to be there, which (you probably already know this) translates into making your stay even more pleasant. When it’s abundantly apparent that ensuring your vacation is an exceptional one is truly the resort's priority, then it becomes that. An extraordinary experience.

Despite its age – no, because of it – Jamaica Inn has patented the low-key vacation. You’re delighted to spend the afternoon on your well-appointed porch, sipping on your Planter’s Punch, reading your novel (sans TV or any other interruptions), enjoying the breeze and the ambiance.
Or you’re just as happy to take off with Marvin on a morning excursion of hiking the Dunns River Falls and snorkeling the region’s extensive reefs.

We thought there was a possibility that we would tire of eating at the same place, but we did not. The menu varied enough and the entrees were prepared with the flair of a five-star establishment. The setting and service (of course) made us feel as if we were the only ones at the hotel.

The crown jewel, though, was the spa. We treated ourselves to two massages and both were amazing. Not only the execution, but also the setting. Not much can compare to being perched of the rocky cliffs, wind whipping the white curtains and the sound of the surf as your accompaniment.

This review may sound sort of like I work for them – I don’t. But I kinda wish I did.

Room Tip: Select a room with a full porch. It's worth it.

OK so this is not for everyone - it is a quiet hotel and not a big all-inclusive resort (although it occupies the next bay to Sandals(!) However, as long as you are not looking for too much buzzing night life or team activities then you really are in the right place. (It is also not really for families.)

The beach is the highlight - exclusive to the hotel, hence not crowded. Fine sand and easy to get into the water, which is calm due to the reef.

Food was excellent, and service in bars and restaurant very friendly.

All in all a tremendous place. Right up there with some of the other Caribbean highlights.

Room Tip: The rooms right on the water look absolutely great but apparently (hearsay) can be impacted by noise...

We stayed here for 10 days end of May/June. It's difficult to describe how wonderful this place is! The pictures or videos won't reflect how stunning the hotel, the beach, the garden are - you have to see it with your own eyes. The amazing thing about this hotel is that everywhere you go, whichever room you stay at, you have the most stunning view ever. We stayed in room 55 in the main building and had an overview of the whole property, beach and sea. The staff and the service was excellent, the room was cosy and clean with picturesque views from the balcony. The beach is the best one in ocho rios! It has separated sun beds every 10 meters or so, so that everybody has his own privacy - fantastic! There is also free water sports equipment such as kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling goggles, etc. Waiters will serve you drinks and food directly on the beach if you wish. We often had rum or fresh coconuts (we highly recommend to try it out). We were absolutely impressed with the beach and didn't want to leave it. In the late afternoon it was lovely to play some croquet with one of the bartenders - Rupert is a great teacher and it's so much fun to play with him! The only minus about the hotel would be the food which lacks versatility and in our eyes was too overpriced for its value. The menu is very sophisticated but unfortunately the dishes don't deliver what they promise.

We loved our stay at Jamaica inn and we'll definitely return.

A wonderful way to spend a relaxing holiday. Jamaica Inn is a very special place. Still privately owned and managed by the same family for over 50 years it has an intimate feel of visiting a friends house. There is no corporate "twaddle " here it is genuinely welcoming and the staff are very friendly and could not be more helpful. Breakfast is not an international buffet. It is served to you from a very extensive menu whilst you are sitting looking over the sea.
All the food we ate there was excellent.
Having stayed in six 5 star hotels this year so far I can tell you that the prices for food and wine are not high at all.
The beach is superb and the complimentary Planters Punch at 11 am, delivered to you on your lounger, is just perfect. The sea is crystal clear and the beach and the sea are very private.
The accommodation is traditional and again not at all corporate . I would say it is unique to this hotel.
We did a garden tour of the wonderful plants with the head gardener Mr Henry. A wonderful man.
We will be going back.

Room Tip: anything straight on to the beach

Stayed at The Jamaica Inn for 3 nights in May 2014, and enjoyed all aspects of the hotel.
I stayed in a cottage with a plunge pool, and it was amazing. The dressing area could use more light, this was the only thing I found lacking. The accommodations are superb, the meals were so amazing, served with a smile, the beach is beautiful. All of the rooms have views of the ocean, my cottage had views from three very large windows.
Evening entertainment was low key, but this is just what you want while you are enjoying dinner. The tables were set up so you had privacy and did not feel like you were on top of anyone.
The staff is amazing, they all seem happy to be there, and this makes all the difference. If you want a real relaxing holiday with good food and impeccable service, this is the place to for you.

Room Tip: If you like lots of space, do the cottages, if not the ocean front rooms are wonderful.

After arriving at Jamaica Inn, following our wedding in Paris, we were greeted by one of the owners who promised we’d be delighted by our experience.

He did not exaggerate. If you’re looking for an alternative to Mauritius or the Maldives for your honeymoon, I can wholeheartedly recommend the timeless elegance of Jamaica Inn. The resort was quite full, but far from the maddening crowds of Sandals or Couples, and we still had plenty of space where we could be alone to soak up the romance of the occasion.

You can dress up if you feel like it, but it never gets stuffy. Food is good and generous, wine is reasonable. Service is exemplary; and it’s all delivered to a reggae beat with a great big smile!

We discovered that many of the guests are repeat offenders who are happy to wax lyrical about their adventures at the Inn. My new bride Anne-Marie and I were treated royally, and we've now set our sights on a return visit to celebrate our anniversary next year.

Those were the words of owner Peter Morrow when he greeted us upon our arrival at Jamaica Inn. And he was absolutely right! Jamaica Inn is all about an incredible feeling of luxury in a perfectly maintained 1950's setting. The staff, the food, the rooms, the private beach, the ocean views . . . . all perfect! If watching the sunrise on your private veranda while sipping coffee and eating your made-to-order room service breakfast, you get it! if watching the sunset on the patio with cocktail in hand while Frank Sinatra croons in the background sounds like a nice way to end the day, you get it. If you are one of the 4 reviewers that rated Jamaica Inn as terrible because there was no flatscreen television in your room, sorry, you don't get it!

We just spent 4 nights in room #57 and we'll be back soon. Thanks Peter and staff

Room Tip: Ask for a room that isn't adjacent to the lobby if you are a light sleeper.
