Stayed 2 weeks at Shaw Park, Ocho Rios. started off with our first few days with hit and miss on water while showering, to cold then scalding hot water to no water at all, to lacking in ice, pop, booze to food product, and having no hobiecats, management has them rationing on everything. Then a very dirty pool, algie, bugs, leafs and sand, etc, no one had interest in maintaining it for the guest. then to wild cats fighting in the attic, peeing and crapping, room smelt very bad, when asking for a room, I was told not tonite. I believe Sunwing certainly did not do any research on this hotel when selling off this vacation package for my husband and I, we as clients trust these professionals such as Sunwing to provide the public with a honest description of these travel packages. Staff we're nice, but because management didn't care, neither did they, such poor service. C.F.

We spent 2 weeks at the resort starting the end of March.
The resort is dated but clean. All of the rooms are on the beach and it was lovely at night to listen to the waves. The staff are amazing, very friendly and will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The beach is clean but small, very hard to get a good walk in as it is seperated by piers. There were very few guests there. Initially there was a small group of guests and we were served three buffet style meals which had adequate options however when the small group left we were served a la carte. This turned out to be not a great thing as we were so limited as to what we could order. The food that was served was prepared well but when you are only offered hot dogs/hamburgers or sheppards pie for lunch and either chicken or pasta for supper it leaves a lot to be desired.
If you are a wine drinker you will want to purchase your own, it is absolutly the worst wine i have ever tasted and i am no wine snob.
There is a gas station up the road to the right, probably 7 minutes walk from the resort and you can pick up wine there and there is also a drug store attached that has everything.
Further down the road keeping to the left of the fork there is a small primary school and some vendors. If you turn right by Sandals and walk about 10 minutes or so you will come to a big store with lots of items to purchase.
If you want to head to Ocho, dont bother with the front desk or from drivers in the lane that leads to the resort..go a minute or so more to the main road and get in a taxi (only those with the red licence plate) and they will take you to town for a dollar.
Coming back the same taxis are available as well. They will simply honk the horn and you raise your hand. Coming back you might want to agree on a price though.
The hotel had no entertainment except for one night two men came in and sang some songs around each table. Other than that it was very quiet.
So, it depends what you are looking for. If you want to totally relax in a very quiet setting then this might be the place for you. If you are looking for any luxery at all or any type of activity then you may want to look elsewhere.

Many thanks for your recent review following your stay at Shaw Park. Your comments are much appreciated especially your kind comments about the staff. The hotel is older in style and quite with just occasional evening entertainment. Managing expectations is one of the hardest aspects in the hospitality business so your comments in your final paragraph are indeed very apt. Shaw Park is very down to earth and doesn't "do" luxury with all the trimmings - but it is a great value hotel in a fab beachfront location close to everything you could want in Ocho Rios. Your comments about the wine and buffet choices has been noted.

we stayed April 2nd till 9th 2014.Upon arrival we weren't told about the lack of water.Although driving up to the resort we did pass the big hole on the road with the water main broken. It wasn't the resorts fault although the receptionist should of told us.The evening we arrived there was 18 guests staying here. The day we left there were 6.The rooms were dated but spotless and safe.I even rented a fridge ($5per day)to keep the Red Stripe cold.Bar only serves from 11am till 11pm.there was no entertainment at all .We made our fun with our new family.there are 3 small beach areas which are clean and very easy entry into the water. We went deep sea fishing with a local and my husband caught a black fin tuna which the chef gladly prepared for all our dinner.i flew with SunWing and because of the water disruption we were compensated $3o each per day.(2 days with water disruption only for a short while and with notice from the hotel). The food was great no buffet so a la carte for each meal. small choices but tasty .Plus wanted something different just ask never a problem.Would I go back?Yes because the beaches were awesome the price was right and I didn't have people trying to entertain me all day long.Just what Ineeded after a long cold Canadian winter

Room Tip: Basic room was all we needed all rooms are steps from the water

Thank you so much for your recent review. The broken water main issue is hopefully now close to being repaired by the authorities - as you point out this is well beyond our control. Our beaches and the guest rooms proximity to the sea and sand are real winners for guests. Many of our staff have been here sometime now and are a credit to the hotel along with good food being served up by chef. Shaw Park is an older style hotel with limited entertainment so for those wanting a quiet spot to relax then we offer great value in a beautiful tranquil beachfront setting.

I went in to this hotel knowing what I was kind of in for from reading other posts. The place is dated but maintained well. The staff were very friendly and the beaches were always clean. It is a very, very quiet resort. We had no evening entertainment after dinner. Dinner is served from 7-9pm after you are done that if you don't belly up to the bar till 11pm you pretty much have nothing to do unless you go off resort. we loved the quiet of the place. Maybe 5 other couples at max total. It was like having our own beach. Get a mask and fins and swim the peer. Plenty of fish right under your feet for pics. The food was alright. No buffet until they ship in the people from the cruise ships. That happens 2 days a week for lunch.

Room Tip: Most rooms are empty so if you don't like your view ask to move they should be accommodating. It...

My wife and I spent nice 10 days in March in Shaw Park Beach Hotel. The greatest advantage of this place is its location. It is nice to see the sea right from the room’s window and be just a few steps from the shore. The beach is not too big, but always clean, with many sun beds, the water great for swimming, with smooth sand on the bottom. About the hotel, I agree to some extend with most of other opinions about its condition. Surely it remembers good old English days, and obviously there was no major remodeling performed since that time. Most of the furniture is also that old, but in acceptable condition. Our room was quite nice and clean and there was only one important thing missing: a screen in the balcony window. During the first night we were attacked by a bunch of mosquitoes. We don’t like to sleep with AC turned on; we love to have a lot of fresh air during the night. It is also lovely to hear the sound of waves, so we kept our balcony door opened during the night. The room maid was very helpful and she sprayed our room with kind of repellent, so next nights were much better.
All the staff was nice and friendly and always willing to help when we needed it. About the food, I must admit there was rather modest choice, but all was tasty and good.
Generally, it is a nice and quiet place, however with one exception. Every other night an entertainer performed during the dinner. It was really loud, especially at the end of the performance. Luckily it always ended about 10 PM. We preferred two other guys singing with acoustic guitar only. They created a nice mood during the dinner.
There is one more thing the guests should be aware. There are no shops in walking distance from the hotel. To go to the town, it is necessary to take a shuttle bus ($10 per person) or take a taxi ($20 both ways).
There are many interesting places to visit on the island, and there is a person in the main lobby who can provide all the necessary information about interesting tours.
And one more remark. Somebody is complaining in his or her review about a cat roaming among the tables. I suppose it was the same cat we had seen and it was really nice, gentle little creature, trying to get some extra food. Certainly nothing to be scared of.
Conclusion: if you’d like to have quiet, nice vacation in the sun, is OK. If you’d like to have a lot of fun and entertainment, look for something different.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have better view. I heard some people complaining about kitchen smells on lower level...

We spent two weeks in March 2014 at this hotel and felt completely cheated and devalued. The hotel is not as advertised. It is poorly maintained dark and dingy
The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that it's on the beach, and the Staff is friendly. Jamaica is a great place to visit but I WOULD NOT recommend this hotel. The negitive does outweighs the possitive.

I have just returned after a weeks stay at this resort with my husband and whilst I always think I am going to have a great time away this was probably a little like staying at Fawlty Towers.

Our bedroom was spotlessly clean with a 60's theme - this is because the hotel was built in the 60's and has probably not changed since the day they opened for business. The plus side you walk out of your room onto your patio and then straight onto the beach, and then into the sea just metres from your door. The beach and sea is the best feature of the hotel as it is so close and very shallow making it safe for swimming.

The 'all-inclusive' package was a joke! I assumed that we would have lots of menu choices and good fish offerings - fish was on the menu twice and always fried? Starter was always salad and soup - which was out of a packet, powder just add water and tasted disgusting and this hotel had no ice cream all week - is it expensive to purchase in Jamaica is that why we could not have it? Ironically the days I did not enjoy staying in the complex was the day the food was at its best - cruise liner day. Basically cruise ships turn up at the ports of Falmouth and Ocho Rios and passengers are then shipped out on busses and boats to hotel resorts to spend time on land. So we went from a lovely quiet hotel of about 30 guests to over 150 at lunch all trying to get a table. On these days we had three of them, the waiters were running around after them to sell cocktails and beer which we ran out of each time these people appeared. However ask your waiter behind the bar if you could see a cocktail menu and you were told they don't have one. You could have a gin but no tonic, a coke without gold rum, a Coke without whiskey, and no beer most afternoons. The owner was talked about but no one saw him, and the GM appeared during the second half of our holiday but would not make any changes. Although he parked his British jaguar car right outside the front entrance -was that to make a statement who knows but it would seem his main concern was interviewing pretty girls and not caring about the guests in general.

We visited Ocho rios town and it is safe in the day time. Be aware you may get accosted by sellers but they are friendly and just trying to make a living. I would not suggest you go out on your own in the evening just because the area becomes a little edgy although I am sure if you have a local taxi driver with you then you would feel more secure which we heard guests did do.

Do not get a taxi ordered from the hotel they are twice as expensive but if you do then negotiate a price with the driver and also most give you a business card so that you can book them direct on other days. We booked Jo Cool taxis from the airport and they were fantastic. We were late arriving into Montego Bay due to delays but the driver was waiting for us and it was a pleasant journey. We also booked them for our return journey to the airport as they charge 70 US dollars single journey and the hotel charged 135 US dollars.

I did have a massage on the beach by one of the spa ladies - Claudette and it was perfect over an hours massage under a shady tree I would recommend this. You can also go over to the spa and have your massage there or your nails done etc - it looks very dated but is very clean and the staff are lovely.

The highlight for both of us was blue dun falls it is amazing and well worth the visit. Do join a group as you will have lots of fun and the guides are full of good information and will look after your camera and take loads of pictures for you it's a good couple of hours of fun and I am so glad we did this.

We also went on a sightseeing and sunset boat ride from our hotel - a complete rip off as you see nothing however when I was ready to jump overboard with the boredom along came a pod of dolphins which was truly magical but I am not sure this is going to happen every time you get on the boat and at over 100 US dollars was just not worth it - oh and guess what no beer on the boat!?

I am glad I have now visited Jamaica but as the world is getting closer and closer due to fantastic travel options I will not be visiting again.

A lot of the staff were lovely, I even liked the 'grumpy' omelette chef - she had a tough time trying to cook on a two gas ring contraption that actually broke and she then had to cook on just one ring! Smiley the bar man was a sweetie too.

I enjoyed meeting new friends but I won't be going back.
