Hermosa Cove - Jamaica's Villa Hotel

Reviewed 27 January 2014

We stayed 4 nights. The service was wonderful. The staff was always responsive and generous with their time and advice. The villa was spotless, and each day was made so again by staff who worked around our schedule to do that. The bed was very comfortable, and everything…furnishings, kitchen, bath, etc were first class. We took advantage of the guided kayak trip to the White River and snorkeling and were well-cared for by Ryan and Carleton. Wendy and Duke, the front desk people, were very kind and accommodating throughout. The beach and the beach front gazebos were beautiful, private and as with the rest of the property, kept in pristine condition. The transport arranged by Wendy from the Montego Bay airport to Ocho Rios was smooth and easy. The only downside for us was the fact that it took 1.5 hours more-or-less to get from the airport to Hermosa Cove. The drive wasn't difficult…on good roads…but the added time after and before the flight were a minor inconvenience. The upside of that distance is that the location was very private and quiet. That would also have been less a problem if we had stayed a week instead of 4 days. We were just beginning to get into the rhythm of Hermosa Cove when it was, sadly, time to leave. We were very well cared for in an unobtrusive and gentle way.

We were there from the 7th to the 21st of jan stayed in the breadfruit villa or son and his wife were in the calaloo house ! first off I'd like to thank Wendy for the smooth and trouble free booking ,Duke for his generous offers to make our stay complete! The breadfruit villa had a few little glitches that were discovered one being large red ants were wanting to be our uninvited guests the first night ! This was quickly fixed with some silicone to plug a hole in the wall under the bathroom sinks and a sprinkle of ant powder around the edges of the villa solved that problem ! We had Luke warm water due to a weak relay on the tankless water heater (new relay on order) if we pushed the reset button on the heater while the tap was on it would make hot water for as long as you wanted problem solved ! Only other issue was the gas stove had a problem that you needed a match to light it something to do with when the stove was plugged it it made a buzzing noise so they had it unplugged ! Oh and the pool pump was noisy so they had it on a timer so it shut down after dark (not a issue) Now that the somewhat negatives are out of the way oh just FYI my sons villa was issue free! I'd like to give a special thanks to Carlton & Ryan for all the attention they provide to the guests kayak trips to the white river and over to the public beach by lobster Dave's and margaritaville these 2 guys deserve a raise for all they do better yet please make sure you tip them well (don't forget to buy them a red stripe over by the white river) they will appreciate it ! The cleaning staff do a excellent job of keeping things neat and tidy in the rooms and the yard staff have a tiring never ending job of sweeping leaves every morning making the grounds spotless (great job guys) Last but not least the 9 full time construction crew that has built this place from the ground up! If you want to see genuine smiles and appreciation take this crew a cold red stripe close to noon and check out there work over at the new jerk hut or the 3 story villa there building down by the new beach just amazing !!! I know I'm missing others that made our trip special the restaurant staff Nathaniel for making the long trek over to the new beach with cold drinks ! A special thanks to the Carvers for building such a special place to visit and employ some of the best staff you could get ! The Topping family

From the reservation process (Duke proactively reached out to ask if we wanted our villa pre-filled with favorite foods and drinks) to the warm welcome when we arrived, to the customized trips and daily meals, every step of the way the resort team made us feel like they were a part of making our vacation as wonderful as possible. Special shout out to Chef Conroy who took the time to get to know our family's favorite food and made a trip to the local market with my husband and son to get local seafood for a special dinner as well as our last evening meal was a specially prepared curried goat. Only at Hermosa Cove could all of this special treatment happen!

THe villas are designer fabulous and uber-comfortable; great air-conditioning in the rooms and beds are great. Huge bathrooms and plenty of access to wi-fi throughout the resort. Also, the villa dipping pool is perfect, just wish there was more sun - maybe cut a few trees!

Whole experience was A+++++ and we will certainly return.

Room Tip: Depending on the size of your group, all the villas are beautiful and have different views. Ask for...

My husband I are very selective when choosing our vacation destination and resort. We like very small boutique resorts with limited rooms, kid free, quiet and all- inclusive excellent service. Our previous destinations in the Caribbean have been Jade Mountain in St. Lucia, Virgin Gorda, Zoetry in Riviera Maya & Dominican Republic and Dreams in Los Cabos. We decided Jamaica would be our next adventure. My husband searched the Internet and reviewed several recommendations from our travel agent, Julie Beringer. Julie has been instrumental in planning all of our previous vacations.
The winner was a 5 night vacation "honeymoon package" at Hermosa Cove in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Hermosa has a total of 15 rooms—three 3-bedroom villas and six 1-bedroom villas. We chose the Calabash one-bedroom villa. We selected Calabash because it was closest to the beach and we liked that our private dip pool was steps away from our back door. It was also a villa that offered a spectacular ocean view. A kitchen and living area downstairs and bedroom/bath upstairs. A fantastic balcony upstairs that wrapped around the house. The bathroom and shower were fantastic! There is also a great little beach bag to use during your stay. In addition, a covered area downstairs near the pool to enjoy a meal or massage at our villa. Our villa as well as the entire resort was very lush and beautiful. Only upstairs was air conditioned which we felt was perfect and all you need...it cooled the room very quickly and efficiently. No worries about being hot while sleeping. The TV was downstairs which was perfect for us! The villa did have complimentary wifi that only worked downstairs which was a little annoying at times. The lobby and dining area also had wifi which was nice!
We were greeted at the airport after enjoying Club Mobay by our driver Michael Murphy with Karandas Tours (included in our package) provided by Hermosa. Michael arrived with a drink for both of us and was very professional, friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. He stopped at the supermarket and a local restaurant/bar along the way for us to enjoy the "local favorite"jerk chicken and festivals.
When arriving at Hermosa Cove we were welcomed by Duke with a local favorite "Jamaican fruit punch" and a cold towel. Duke was accommodating, patient and so warm and friendly during our entire stay. He is experienced in the industry and very knowledgable. I don't think he ever told us no:) After setting up our meals, massages and excursions he typed a schedule and sent it to our room. Duke made sure we were taken care of at all times and provided his cell for night time requests and emergencies making us feel special and safe which thankfully we didn't have to use. He set up our day trip to Mystic Mountain and Dunn's River with transportation provided by Michael! My husband also wanted to attend a local football (soccer) match and Duke made that possible as well. He sent Nathaniel, Hermosa employee, with us to the game to make sure we were taken care of. Wendy was also very accommodating and friendly but we had very little interaction due to a horrible cold:((
Christopher's Restaurant at Hermosa really made our trip complete. Since i am a picky eater, I have to say I was very apprehensive after seeing the menu the first time...it seemed limited. That all changed the moment we met the amazing Chef Conroy. I told him my likes and dislikes and he accommodated them at each and every meal. He came to our table every time we sat down and discussed our options. We had lobster one night that was out of this world. He is creative, personable and a phenomenal chef...I would probably say the best in Jamaica. I can't say enough wonderful things about Chef Conroy. My husband had several things off of the menu that were delicious. We had a sampler for dinner one night that was exquisite. A wonderful filling fruit & bread breakfast is complimentary with your stay and it is just enough. However a couple of mornings he made us a full breakfast and it was perfect. In addition to a wonderful chef were two phenomenal waiters/servers, Nataniel & Orraine. Both gentlemen went above and beyond to accommodate us and make our experience unforgettable. They were always right there with a smile on their face and we never waited for anything. They were polite, patient, friendly and a true pleasure to be around. Nataniel makes a perfect margarita and Orraine mixes up a delicious rum punch. Hermosa has a first class professional team on board that will definitely not disappoint.
We truly enjoyed the different options for having dinner since there is only one restaurant. One night we sat on the restaurant balcony overlooking the beach, second night candle light on the beach (amazing) and the other two nights on a covered table at the end of the pier over the water. It was truly amazing listening to the waves crashing while dining....breathtaking. You can dress up or dress down for the restaurant...it's truly your vacation.
Water sports with Carlton and Ryan are a must during your stay. They took us on a long kayak ride down the river which was relaxing and enjoyable and provided by Hermosa. They are both very sweet and a pleasure to be around. They are experienced, knowledgeable and quite the tour guides during our kayaking adventure. They are always around ready to accommodate the guests making you feel safe on the water. If you happen to use them make sure you show your appreciation.
Housekeeping ensured our villa was tidy and provided nightly turn down service with sweet towel creations and rose petals on the bed. We especially enjoyed seeing Paulette. She was so friendly and always with a smile.

Hermosa also provided a boat excursion to Laughing Waters with a local named Lipton and his son. We really enjoyed this trip to a great little beach and waterfall. Lipton was a fantastic tour guide! Duke set us up with a small ice chest that we filled with drinks for the ride. As we were leaving the owner said we should have had the resort pack a lunch for the ride. It was a great suggestion, but a little late. I think it would have been a great idea to enjoy lunch on the beach.

My husband and I strangely enough like to workout during our vacation and there isn't a gym on the resort and the beach isn't long enough for a run. However, we took a run out of the resort daily and loved it. There is a sidewalk which makes for a safe run with an occasional dodging of a car:))) it was a pleasant run with locals everywhere hanging out and selling their Jamaican creations. We did a workout under the gazebo on the beach and there are plenty of stairs! We had a great workout everyday...no complaints.

Although the beach was small it was perfect for the limited amount of villas. With that being said they have a second beach on the resort which is larger and steps away from the smaller beach area. It is considerably larger and will be a part of the new addition to the resort. Both beaches are beautiful and you will be pleased.
Our package we chose did come with complimentary laundry service (same day turn around) which is a huge plus to cut down on packing and such a great added amenity.
Our package also came with a massage for each of us. It was done at our convenience in our villa. My husband and I thought it was the best massage we have ever received.

Hermosa is a true gem in Jamaica. We rarely ran into the other guests and felt as if we had the resort to ourselves. It was so quiet and peaceful all day and night. We felt very safe our entire trip. Although we want safety to come first, the keys for the villa were quite cumbersome. We had one set of keys for our villa with 5 keys on it...one for each of the 2 gates, one for the gate to the villa, one for upstairs and one for the safe. We feel a more condensed key system would be more effective for the guests while still ensuring safety as it became quite bothersome at times. The staff takes excellent care of the resort grounds keeping it clean and beautiful starting very early in the morning. We had a chance to meet the owners, the Korver's and they were very personable and friendly and we enjoyed chatting with them.

The only negative in our opinion is that it's not a true all inclusive which may not be a negative to some. We don't like having a bill at the end of our trip and worrying about signing checks. We like to know the total beforehand so we can fully relax and enjoy. Another suggestion is to have a better tipping system in place for all of the staff. We felt as if we were constantly tipping and unsure of what was appropriate and sufficient. We had excellent service and we wanted to show it, but it would have been nice to have a better idea of that prior to our stay. However, we did feel the prices were fair and our final bill with the extras wasn't as bad as we thought. We would have preferred to pay more up front and have everything included. The staff definitely deserves the extra because they all work very hard to pease their guests. We truly want to thank Duke, Wendy, Nathaniel, Orraine, Chef Conroy, Micael, Carlton, Ryan and Paulette for going above and beyond to make our vacation at Hermosa unforgettable. We will definitely pass the word along to our travel agent, Julie and our friends and family.

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon in Jamaica, where we stayed at Hermosa Cove. I've been planning this trip with the help of the concierge, Duke, for several months, and Hermosa Cove exceeded all of my expectations. We stayed in the smallest villa, the Coconut Suite, which was still roomy and beautifully appointed. Duke had planned several special things for my husband and I, and they were all wonderful. We took a trip to Blue Hole on our first full day in Ocho Rios, and it was the highlight of the trip. Its a beautiful, remote waterfall similar to Dunn's River Falls, but without the commercialization and crowds. It was an authentic Jamaican adventure, not a tourist trap. I'm so glad Duke sent us there. He also arranged for us to go shopping in downtown Ochi, had a masseuse come to our villa to give us a couples massage, and set up a romantic dinner on the beach for our last evening. We ate at Christopher's for most of our meals, which were delicious, but the service was slow and unenthusiastic, and our order was messed up several times. That was really the only problem that we had at Hermosa Cove. Our best meals of the trip were when we left the resort and tried some local cuisine, but that's not to say that the food on site wasn't of quality. I would suggest that you try some places the locals like to frequent at least once, if only because Christopher's has a limited menu and if you want jerk, you need to get off property. Overall, we had an amazing time and we can't wait to go back!

I stayed with my partner, my parents, my 9 year old niece and a friend. With 3 of us having worked in the travel industry for years (we currently run our own 4-star holiday apartments in London) and with widely differing food tastes in the party, we were not necessarily going to be a particularly easy group to please.

However, we can report that the time we had and service we received at Hermosa Cove was outstanding. From the reservations team (Wendy & Duke), to Housekeeping to the owners themselves, we were very well taken care of. The water sports guys (Carlton & Ryan) took us on a great kayaking trip to the White River. On several occasions Chef Conroy invited my 9 year old niece to observe and help him in the kitchen, which for her was a dream come true, as she loves cooking and aspires to perhaps be a chef herself. The kitchen, like the rest of the resort, was of the most superior quality. Chef Conroy had a lovely, gentle and encouraging way about him and was an excellent mentor.

The Villas were finished to an extremely high standard. We couldn't have wished for better. There were always loads of fresh towels and the housekeeping staff did a great job at clearing up our daily mess and the sand we inevitably seemed to bring from the beach.

We spent most of our 2 weeks in the Pimento Hall, a 3 bedroom villa which has a bigger pool than the 8 other villas and one which had the sun through most of the day (during our Jan stay). In fact we stayed our first 3 nights in Ginger which had a lovely view of the sea from the master bedroom but a smaller pool that didn't get much sun. We could easily have stayed there the entire time quite happily, but opted to move as my niece was such a big pool fan.

During our stay we had some restaurant meals, ate out a few times and did some self-catering in the villa kitchen. If we're being picky, the villa kitchens could perhaps have been slightly better equipped for those who wish to self cater more. The cooker was beautiful and a joy to cook on but a few more serving bowls and baking pans could have come in handy. That said, I know that other guests asked for specific things they were short of, and they were provided.

As the resort grows I'm sure that we'll see an expanded menu at the restaurant (this was mentioned by past reviewers). For some of our party there was rather too much emphasis on jerk seasonings, chillies and garlic, and more 'westernised' food options would have been appreciated. But you can't please all of the people... For 6 of us (with a bottle of wine), each dinner was coming in at around $160, which was enough to discourage us eating there for every meal. That said, you have to appreciate you are eating right by the Caribbean Sea. One evening we had our own private BBQ laid on by the Chef right next to the water. Magical.

What was also amazing was having a beautiful beach either totally to ourselves or almost. If the resort had been full (only 2-3 villas were full most days we were there) I guess that would not have been the case. But it was, and it was truly memorable.

Hermosa Cove is doing all the right things and we really hope that they continue to thrive and that we can stay again in the future. Apparently, as well as a series of swimming pools by the water's edge, there are now some tree houses planned, and these sound really exciting.

Thanks to everyone there for looking after us so well and giving us such a special holiday.

Hermosa Cove Villa Resort lives up to all the accolades written about it at tripadvisor… and then some more!

We chose this place over an "all inclusive" vacation, hoping for relaxing in peace and quiet and finding individual attention rather than mass tourism. The place is somewhat far from the center of town (still walking distance, otherwise a short cab ride will do), quite secluded, surrounded by a lush tropical paradise…exactly what we were looking for. The pictures on their website are NOT exaggerated!

Our expectations with the place and, above all, the outstanding staff were more than met. The personnel in the office (Duke and Wendy) went out of their way to welcome us and accommodate all our wishes, they organized tours for us, they cared and worried (thank you Duke for caring , when one evening we walked to town and came back late, which seems to be a safe thing to do, provided you are careful walking on the busy main street).

The lifeguards (Ryan and Carlton) at the two lovely beaches (especially the more secluded one, somewhat remote) were there for us at all times (and stayed for us past their "bedtime") to help us enjoy the beach chairs, sea kayaking, and snorkeling.

The little restaurant (Christopher) has a limited, but fine menu. Conroy, the executive chef and his sous-chef are real gems, creative and ingenious, listening to and accommodating our wishes and then preparing excellent special dinners, beautifully served. We ended up having most of our dinners their, rather than in town, it was a rewarding experience. Thanks, Conroy, for coping with all of our high maintenance request

We stayed in what seems to be the smallest, yet spaceaous, of their villas (1 bedroom), very nicely adorned and outfitted, comfortable bed, nice shower….. kudos for that, too.

All in all, an outstanding experience, highly recommended for anyone who needs some relaxing time-off in a civilized, individualized atmosphere.

Room Tip: Enjoy and let them pamper you! Don't miss the individualized tours the staff can organize for yo...
