Reviewed 1 December 2013

My wife and I just returned from this property, completely relaxed and rejuvenated. The property is meticulously taken care of, the rooms are spacious and extremely clean. Within the first 30 minutes my wife and I knew that we had found somewhere extraordinary.
At first I was unsure when I would need use of the butler’s service but both our butlers Shelly and Jermaine anticipated our needs before we even realised what they were. Dinner reservations, offering to unpack our luggage, fresh coconut juice (yes Jermaine had someone climb a tree), advice about activities on the island, a tour of not only our Sandals property but the other Sandals resort that you also have access to as a Royal Plantation guest dinner were just some of the services they provided.

The food at the Royal Plantation, was exceptional (Coconut Shrimp was one of our favorites at lunch) the waiters/waitresses and bartender were always happy to accommodate any request that my wife or I had. The addition of Grey Goose Vodka, and Brewed Decaf coffee was unique to the Royal Plantation (not that I drank them together)

There is a real sense of pride that the staff take in their jobs at the Royal Plantation, and if I were to pick out one thing in particular and unique it was the pride that was displayed by everyone that we encountered. The general manager Mark is extremely visible and approachable, and cares about each one of his guests and their experience.
My wife and I have already booked our return

If you are looking for a relatively quiet getaway this is the place. If you want the party atmosphere this is not it, but within free shuttle distance the party is right next door and included in your reservation. We met great guests, and the staff was very accommodating. Really I couldn't find a single complaint. Wait there was one, we eventually had to go home....

We spent 12 days at the Royal Plantation and had a wonderful time. This is a great place to relax. The small number of rooms, the quality of food, the setting and the service all contribute to make Royal Plantation one of the finest resort we visited over the years.

Special thanks to Audel, Tafari, Junior, Chad, Nathalia, Lisa-Gay, Yanquie, Jason, Kevin and the rest of the staff at Royal Plantation who made us feel welcomed, comfortable and very special. Thanks also to Ricardo at Valentino's and Shanice at Soy where we had great food over at the Sandals Grand Riviera.

We will go back.

We visited the Royal Plantation a few years back and I still re-live it and get a smile on my face. We loved the fact that it is for adults only and that they limit the number of guests in a room. This allows for a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. Every morning I would breakfast in the room with room service. Sitting on the patio and enjoying the jungle like silence. In the afternoons I found a chaise in the shade, on the beach and buried my self in a book. My husband enjoyed scuba diving everyday (Included) and we took several side trips each day. The food was marvelous. We really enjoyed ordering from a menu and not being herded through a buffet line. I'm ready to go back!

We just returned from a fantastic week at SRP. It is really difficult to do justice to the resort with words, because the enjoyment comes from the very special vibe of the people, the setting, the food, the unpretentious but elegant charm and the service which is really out of this world. We were treated like royalty all week and I think that the many people we met felt the same way.

Arrival - was easy. We came and left on a Saturday so the airport (MBay) was fairly busy; however, we only had a 15 minute wait at the Sandals lounge before our shuttle took us to SRP and the drive was smooth. One of our fantastic butlers, Donard, was waiting to greet us and take us to our room and offer a tour of the resort. Check-in was quick and easy and I had my first delicious rum punch of the week! The resort grounds are beautiful.

Restaurants - the food is the best we've ever had at any AI resort and better than many "5 star" restaurants and non - AI resorts/ hotels that we have visited. The service is unbelievable and people who work at the restaurants are amazing. Romaine, Shanneil, and Alexx were standouts for us - but everyone works hard and has a great attitude. Donard made all of our reservations (as needed) the first day we were there, so we didn't have to think about it again! The Royal Grill down by the water was open for dinner during our week, so we ate there one night - excellent food and great ambiance. Le Papillon is amazing - the lamb chops were my favourite! Jamaica night at the Terrace was really fun - fantastic spicy food and talented young musicians and dancers to entertain! Lunch at the Terrace on Tuesday and Thursdays is fixed menu small plate (tapas) menu and we loved it! We generally ate our lunch at the Grill down by the water.

Golf - we played 3 rounds and really enjoyed the course. It is a short shuttle ride up to the club and the course itself is very pretty and forgiving. Our caddie, Roderick, was really laid-back and helpful. No tee times are necessary and the pace of play is quick.

Watersports - we went snorkelling and sailing on our last day and both were fantastic! When we were at SEB last year, the water sports was "closed" a lot of the week because of wind. Not at SRP - snorkelling boat went out and we sailed really far off shore on a really windy day - no problem! Special thanks to OJ for the amazing sail - and the guys on the snorkel boat (sorry I cant remember your names!!). The reef is fairly close to shore and on the day we were out - lots of different coloured fish and underwater plants and coral.

Beach/ pier - the guys who work on the beach and pier are amazing. We barely had two feet on the sand and they would start to set up our loungers with cushions and towels (which they tucked in for us so they wouldn't blow away). We preferred to sit on the pier to get more sun. At this time of year (Nov) the sun is lower in the sky, so the beach itself doesn't get the sun for as long as it would when the sun is higher in the sky between Feb and Oct. Chad who worked on the beach was a standout for us - but all the guys were great. Cleon and Adrian, the beach butlers were always in sight and always asking if we wanted/ needed anything at all. Incredible service.

Room - Our room was very well laid out with the nice sitting area and the french balcony. Our doors were open whenever we were in the room and we loved it. I almost preferred it to a balcony because our furniture was soo comfy and and we could have our drinks etc and feel like we were outside because the doors open so wide. Big double sink area and walk in closet. Smaller basic tub but we don't really use a bath, so that was just fine with us. Of course our butlers Donard and Chase were awesome with towel and floral suprises, bubbly in the ice bucket everyday and stocking our fridge with water which we consume a lot!! Chase introduced us to banana chips - which I loved and which were delivered everyday after that (without asking!)

Butlers - both of our butlers, Donard and Chase, were excellent in their own ways. We really enjoyed both of them. They always checked in but didn't intrude and they figured out on their own what we preferred. Donard escorted us to dinner at Le Papllion both nights and came by to make sure we were doing well and refilled our glasses etc while he was there! Chase escorted us to dinner the night we ate at Kimonos at SGR and arranged our pickup before we even called him!! Many other thoughtful touches throughout the week. Amazing.

The Spa- we had the couples massage which we extended to 50 minutes - but which ended up being over an hour!! Great massages. The spa is small but very nice. As others have said - the prices are a bit steep, but the services are excellent.

The Fitness centre - this is small but very clean and adequate. Free weights, a few treadmills, stepper and a couple of ellipticals. Lots of fresh towels and a fountain. If we were there for more than a week - we would probably head over to the gym at SGR for a longer workout mid-trip - it is much bigger and better equipped.

Departure - ride back to the airport was all arranged by the resort and was an easy drive. We did Club Mobay - worth it. We moved right through immigration and security which was great. We had a quick bite and a drink in the lounge then did a bit of last minute shopping (duty free etc) in the terminal before we boarded our plane which was on time. If your flight was delayed - you would be really happy to be in the lounge!

The only negative about our stay at SRP was that it was too short - so we booked a longer return visit next year! We met so many nice people from all across Canada, UK, and the US. The size of the resort makes it very easy to do this. We would highly recommend SRP!

We just returned from our stay at Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios, and we cannot say enough wonderful things about this top-notch resort! We were looking for a small, boutique-style hotel that would afford us a very relaxing vacation -- and we found everything we were looking for (and more!)

When we first arrived, we actually worried that maybe the resort was TOO small, as we are used to slightly larger resorts that are still on the cozy side (but offer buffet-style eating, swim-up bars, nightly entertainment and poolside games -- or other options for entertainment -- during the day.) This was by far the smallest resort we've visited, and we were extremely pleased with the very personalized service we received, the impeccable groundskeeping and the wonderful food, which was always cooked to order.

Butler Service: We were a bit nervous about the prospect of having butler service as we are not the type to indulge in such services normally and felt unsure about the amount of attention we may get (we prefer to do many things for ourselves and do not like being held to a schedule so we can remain flexible and spontaneous enough to do whatever suits our mood.) From the very beginning, our butlers Hector and Romaine picked up on our preference and were always there when we needed them, but were never over-bearing in any way. Romaine surprised us on several occassions, our favorites being the chocolate lava cake and ice cream he presented to us while we sipped after-dinner drinks by the pool and the coconut with two straws that he served us from the pier while we floated lazily in the ocean. He also made us adorable towel animals (the monkey was the best!!), brought a snack to our room one late afternoon while we were getting ready for the evening and had a contagious laugh. Hector always offered us a warm smile and secured us one of the best tables in the French restaurant on the balcony with a spectacular view of the ocean and candle-lit pier in a cozy corner on a busy evening. He also worked to help us find an alternative to a sunset cruise we wanted to take and was never short of suggestions to help make our stay more enjoyable. He even brought us fresh towels and our favorite drinks while we sat in the hot tub when we first arrived.

Beach: The beaches are small, but provide everything you need. I love the sun and was worried about the amount of shade there might be, but we found that the pier on the West beach was perfect for sunbathing. Cleon and Adrian always met us with Mangosas in the morning and never let our glasses run dry -- yet they also never disturbed us if we fell asleep. There is a smoking beach (East) and non-smoking beach (West), which we were very thankful for as we are non-smokers. The attendants were very quick to set up your bed and bring you a fresh towel when you first arrived to start the day -- and even did so in the afternoon. On a whim, we took a quick dip in the ocean while waiting for lunch to be served late one afternoon and were greeted with dry towels afterwards near where we had temporarily set our belongings. It was an impressive touch! The beach was raked often, and it was by far one of the best we'd ever used because there were no rocks, no beach shoes needed in the water and the clarity of the water was amazing.

Food: We LOVED the chicken nuggets at the Grill and really enjoyed our server, Davian. He was our server on several occasions in the evening as well, and was so very professional and accomodating. We always enjoyed seeing his smiling face and felt excited to know he would be waiting on us. He even teamed up with Sean one evening, and while still shining with professionalism, they made us laugh throughout our meal with sweet jokes and amusing banter, which we could really appreciate as we can be quite silly ourselves! The chef even made an appearance on the evening we dined at the Grill for dinner and we were very impressed with that touch! Speaking with him was a real treat and reminded us of the "above and beyond" feeling we had with each staff member we encountered (and we are certain much is also being done 'behind the scenes', as well, which we appreciate, too!) Our only suggestion would be in La Papillion (the French restaurant), the Manager's Wine List was out of many of the selections. We asked for 2 bottles of different wines only to be told they were out of each selection, so we just settled for the 3rd selection they presented us (which was actually well-above the price range we were looking at originally, but we do not fault the server for that -- we could have checked on the price before agreeing to the bottle.) As wine enthusiasts, we would have appreciated the menu selections to be in stock. (As a result, the next night we dined there, we just opted for the house wine.) BUT, the service there is impeccable, to say the very least. And the French Onion Soup was absolutely delicious! The servers were amazing, and we felt so very pampered! We can't say enough wonderful things about the service and attention we were given.

Entertaiment: There is music every night from 8-10 outside on the Terrace, which is ideal because you can go to bed relatively early if you wish and sleep soundly without music pumping loudly through the resort. However, if you want to stay up later, there's great piano music frequently playing live inside the Wobbly Peacock. We loved the jazz band, Raggae trio and everyone we saw -- it was just enough and added elegance to the evening. There were also opportunites to shop with local vendors on the Terrace, and we were delighted to see that while the vendors were very friendly, nobody was pushy or expecting a purchase. It made browsing a pleasant experience.

High Tea: We participated in the tea service one afternoon at 4:00 and felt like we were being treated like royalty. The tea selections were numerous, as were the selections of the yummy cakes, cookies, finger sandwiches and pastries. Our server made us a sampler plate and we tasted nearly everything -- it was so delightful, to say the very least!

Pool: We also worried about being able to find a lounge at the pool -- and I was shocked at the very small size of the pool in general when first arriving, but we could always find a chair and it was NEVER crowded, despite its 'backyard' size. I even remarked that it was akin to house-sitting for a movie star because it was so small, personal and private -- and we were oftentimes the only ones using it!) We also saw a few people use the pool at night, and were amazed that the wait-staff was still very quick to ask them if they needed a drink or would like anything. It was a very nice touch. The pool attendant (I wish I had noted his name) was awesome about setting up the towels and chairs in the morning -- and we even saw him scramble to keep guests' items dry when a quick rain shower approached. He also worked very quickly to get the lounge coushins and towels under cover from the rain to keep them dry and welcoming for the guests when the shower passed. I had never seen this kind of attention to detail or care at a resort before!

Wobbly Peacock: We always enjoyed a few drinks at the Wobbly Peacock each evening and the staff was very attentive. Orane was wonderful, as was every member of the wait staff -- and they always kept the bar looking spectacular. Some of the seating areas had pillows arranged on them, and you could never even tell the pillows were ever out of place once a group left the area. It was always clean and impressive -- just like every other area of the resort.

Sandals Grand Riviera: Next door, the Sandals Grand Riviera offers additional restaurants, more pools (including a swim-up bar) and more of a 'party' atmosphere than RP. We would visit on occassion, but always looked forward to going back to our quiet, relaxing space when we were finished. They do offer firepits at night with great lounge/bed-type seating for star-gazing or relaxing, and we did love the option of just walking over if we felt we wanted a little more to do or see. We only ate at one of the restaurants (Kimono's -- the Japanese Habachi style restaurant) and we weren't overly impressed. The chef didn't seem very 'into it' and the restaurant was so loud that we couldn't really concentrate on anything going on except the noise at the other table where quite a bit of entertainment seemed to be happening. After that, we never left RP when it came to dinner!

Excursions: The only excursion we did was the Red Locks sunset catamaran cruise (Lovers Rock cruise), which was the best! It is only offered once per week, which we were disappointed to learn because we certainly would have done it again if given the opportunity. We really, really loved that cruise!!

Room: We had a very standard level room with no balcony, which was fine because we were rarely in our room (unless it was time for bed or we were getting ready for dinner.) The bed and pillows were absolutely the most comfortable we've ever had on an all-inclusive trip! I was very impressed by the bedding and the overall comfort. Very reminiscent of home. We slept better than we have in months!

Spa: The spa was very nice. We were greeted so warmly upon our arrival and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered during our complimentary 30 minute couples' massage (which we extended to a 50 minute massage.) We do feel, however, that the spa pricing is quite expensive. On most trips, we visit the spa nearly every other night, but this time, we limited ourselves to just the one massage. If the prices were more reasonable (or closer to what we would pay at home), then we would have definitely used the spa services on multiple occassions. It's one of our favorite vacation perks.

Gift Shop: The gift shop was very reasonably priced for all items and the staff was so very kind and accomodating. The only hiccup we experienced was both transactions we made in the shop were very slow (computer issues). On the last day of our stay, I purchased $3 worth of postcards and needed to use a credit card, a transaction that took about 25 minutes as I was required to sign a "second receipt for the hotel" after the receipt was signed and the postcards were already paid for, which I didn't understand. I was told that signing a second receipt (which was not printing correctly) had to be signed before I could go. After spending a lot of time waiting for the second receipt to print, I regrettably finally had to leave without signing the second receipt, and I really could not understand why that was so important if the transaction had been completed and the cards were paid for already. But again, a minor glitch compared to our other wonderful experiences.

Staff: We did not meet a single person who was not smiling and quick to greet us! A kind handshake or playful fist-bump was always part of the greeting, and everyone genuinely seemed to enjoy their particular role and did their job with the utmost pride while always keeping their guests' needs and concerns in the forefront of their day. I recall asking a gentleman one afternoon if he was having a good day (just as a greeting) and he responded, "If my friends are happy, then I am happy." That comment stayed with me for the rest of our stay -- and beyond! I would love to bottle that genuine warmth and sincerity. We also enjoyed seeing Mark, whom we later learned was the GM, interacting with guests -- he also helped send us off to the airport with warm conversation and a hearty wave as we pulled away.

We have already booked our next stay and did so through the Soon Come Again service at the hotel, which we thought was a nice feature. We also can't say enough about the transportation to and from the airport and highly recommend doing Club Mobay ($30/person), which fast-tracks you through Security and Customs at the airport on your way home and offers an amazing VIP lounge with open bar and finger foods prior to your flight.

We can't wait to return!! And we thank everyone for making our stay the most enjoyable we've ever had in the Caribbean.
