Reviewed 24 November 2008

Yes it’s true. Royal Plantation really is as great as everyone says it is. We found it through the outstanding reviews on Trip Advisor and stayed six nights in November 2008. This review is for all those people like us who read every single review before making a booking. We’ll try and include some different feedback to help other guests make the most of their visit.

The resort is gorgeous. The grounds, our room, the beach, the restaurants are all beautiful. It is a very romantic place.

Service is great, just like everyone says. Though it is a little inconsistent at times and they are all on Jamaican time. Once you accept the way it is and start to relax then it all clicks perfectly. We had great room service experiences (Jermaine is the best; he brought us lots of bottled water). We recommend the Frenchman’s Picnic (cheese plate) while getting ready for dinner with the balcony doors open.

Dining - the gloves are off on this one. The Royal Grill was by far the best dinner dining at Royal Plantation. Maybe it was the chef, maybe it was the fact that the grill is smaller (15 tables?), but our food was steaming hot, right off the grill, the service was more prompt than the other places, and the food was just yummier. We had the fresh snapper up at the fancy French restaurant, Le Papillon, one night and then tried the jerk snapper down at the grill and it was so much better. It was also so romantic down at the grill. If you go early, try and get a table by the rail and you can hear the surf and feel the ocean breeze.

The manager’s barbecue (Monday night) was absolutely fantastic. The food and entertainment were both outstanding. The vocalist Roja was awesome. The cultural presentation on Friday night was also really fun. The limbo guy was so impressive!

They are serious about making reservations for dinner. The Royal Grill and Le Papillon fill up so if you don't get in you end up at La Terrace which isn’t very special in our opinion.

We always took in the breakfast buffet in the mornings. Fresh coffee, neat local fare, comforting omelets, French toast etc, and a huge fresh fruit spread. Make sure to try the Johnny cakes and the mango. The escowich (fish) was good too.

For lunch we recommend the beach grill – ordered to your chairs on the beach. Our favourite was cold Red Stripes with Jamaica patties, jerk chicken or coconut shrimp.

Water sports are fantastic – mainly because the resort is so small. The snorkeling is a like a private trip since there are never many people going. A far cry from the jammed Sandals snorkel boat you see go by. I really don’t think they could fit one more person on that boat! Snorkelling was so neat - bring a Johnny cake from breakfast with you to feed the fish and you'll be wowed at the tropical wonder of snorkelling Jamaica. The staff at the water sports hut are very helpful. You can even borrow a snorkel mask and pipe and check out the fishes that live on the ends of the piers - very cool.

Excursions - we did Dunn’s River Falls and had a great time. Very neat place. Bring water shoes if you can and don’t bring your expensive digital camera – waterproof durable cameras only for this adventure as you will definitely be submerged and soaked at least once during the climb.

Souvenirs – Royal Plantation invites a couple select vendors into the ground to sell souvenirs. If you don’t want to leave the resort (though there is a craft market just outside the gates, not sure if it is there all the time) you can pick up some jewelry or carvings made by the people selling them. They are very discreetly set up at the beach and very friendly. You wouldn’t even know they were there, they don’t approach anyone and there is only one table every other day or so. We bought some jewelry and a carved wooden turtle. Don’t be afraid to barter with them.

Overall we had a great time, relaxed to the max, and hope to go back again someday.

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Plantation for our honeymoon. It was an amazing experience. We were pampered from the moment we walked in the door. The grounds and beach is beautiful, intimate and quiet. Not like other all inclusive resorts, this is much smaller and much more like a boutique hotel. The staff are all pleasant, fun and very helpful. The views from the rooms are all ocean views and gorgeous. There are some activities included in the Royal Plan, but laying on the beach, getting sprayed with rose water and being served fresh fruits and island drinks was plenty to keep us occupied! The food is good and the evening entertainment was great. If you are looking for a true island paradise with no worries and exceptional service and ambiance, this is the place. I would recommend this resort to anyone and hope to go back soon!

This hotel is truly amazing..from the moment you walk in you are treated like royalty! The staff are amazing...they are lively and fun and give you a sense that they enjoy what they do. The rooms are incredible...We stayed in a junior suite and while there are more expensive suites available, this room was deluxe in every way. The food was fantastic and they even had low fat options available.

If I had to think of one thing to be constructive with was the fact that the food (while excellent) did have a carribean influence however they could have possible offered more traditionally prepared foods - a.k.a spicy...The Spa facilities were great however the staff, allbeit excellent at their job, were a little pushy on the sale of products...a minor thing

100% recommended!!!!

We didn't leave the resort and we are so glad!

My husband and I have stayed at Royal Plantation twice. Our first trip was in October 2007 at which time we traveled with another couple. The guys are divers who found it very convenient that diving is included in the "Royal Plan" and is available next door at Sandals. October is rainy season in Jamaica and it did rain most of our stay but we still had fun using the kayaks and relaxing. The Service is wonderful and the staff is more than helpful. The food is very good and much better than any of the "chain all-inclusives" we've stayed in.
In May we returned for our 10th anniversay. We were there for 8 wonderful days. My husband went diving twice a day while I relaxed on the beautiful white sand beach and enjoyed Mangosas ( a must try drink with champagne and mango puree) which were served on silver platters by the beach butlers. We also enjoyed pretty much private snorkeling trips on the boat right from RP.
I would HIGHLY recommend the "Royal Plan" which is the all-inclusive plan. The a la carte food prices were very high.
I CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN TO PARADISE!!

This is our second trip to the hotel and will travel there again in the future. The staff go out of their way to ensure that you have a good time. The service is second to none.
This would be a great spot for a wedding/honeymoon.

One thing to note is that if your looking for water sports and activities around the beach or pool like the other regular Sandals hotels this is not it. This is a smaller hotel with a small pool, the beach is where to hang out.
If you are looking for relaxation, sun, drinks and great food and a romantic enviroment this is it.

We stayed at the Royal plantation for a total of three nights, this past November. The property is beautiful! Although we had rain most of the week, due to a hurricane off the western carribean, it did not dampen our time at this amazing hotel. The staff was very welcoming, the ocean view room was luxurious, and very comfortable and clean. The ocean view did not have a balcony, however you could open the french doors to the outside. The beach was immaculate, as well as the service. The food was amazing, we had at least three course dinners everynight. They have a couple restaurants, and always the more casual beach restarant. I would recommend the "royal plan" which is all inclusive. Food and drinks are very pricey. I would recommend for couples, groups and honeymooners, and not singles looking to party. The list of excursions was amazing, as well as the contracted private transportation available. Overall we had a wonderful time at this hotel.

This was by far the most upscale all-inclusive that we have ever stayed at. Of course you pay for it, but it is well worth it. The people who work at the resort cannot do enough for you and are unbelievable friendly. The food was fantastic and the service above and beyond. The only (2) drawbacks that I had were the bathtub was really outdated (I love to take a bath), and the managers' party with the bbq was a huge disappointment. I should note that I don't like buffets at the best of times, and certainly not in a 5 star resort. The private transport to and from the airport with a cooler of beer & water on ice is just what you need to start and end the vacation. We can hardly wait to go back again!
