We spent our 2 week honeymoon here and loved the hotel. Another couple traveled with us for the first week. This resort is HUGE, but not a problem like other people stated in their review. We think after all the food you eat a little stroll does you good. The beach and water was fantastic, unlike where we stayed at the Iberostar (although a great resort) in Montego Bay. Just a few rocks and warm water; exactly what I was looking for. Only disappointing thing was the room choice.
We travel to quite a few all inclusives and have never had a problem with a free room upgrade so I ASSUMED (big mistake) we would easily get one for a honeymoon. Word of advise pay for it upfront on something special because we did not get one and they wanted $150.00 extra a day for a suite which is just a bigger room. Had I known this I would have paid a few hundred more at booking, 2 weeks in a small room was a little much. When we stayed at the Riu Vallarta they put us in a really nice suite without even asking, but lesson learned. Room was clean, and nothing was missing. We did leave tips for housekeeping every couple of days though. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but we do it because we feel like they are cleaning up after you every day so why not. I do have to agree with everyone on the musty smell though, for some reason I couldn't smell it there but when we got home and unpacked WOW. Had to send stuff to dry cleaners even if we didn't wear it. LOL Beds were ok for us, we had 2 soft pillows and 2 hard pillows, no biggie we were tired after a long day and never a problem falling asleep.
Drinks were fine. If they were watered down I didn't notice, they had no problem adding extra to any thing they put in front of you. They also did not ask for tips or treat you different if you didn't give one. We tipped off and on but the service never changed. Well with the exception of the bar on the beach. One girl put a tip basket on the counter and was pretty grouchy on top of it, but one out of the whole resort is nothing to complain about. Service was exceptional by all.
The buffet food was good; not WOW but...., I don't know about everyone else in the world but I don't have that many choices when I sit down at my table to eat. What do people expect...how bout a high five to all the chefs for managing to feed that many people 3 times a day and making it cost effective at the same time...I personally thought they did a good job and if you get tired of it go to town, or eat at one of the reservation restaurants which by the way was no problem getting. I never went to bed hungry!!!! If anything I was up a few pounds when I got home. Jerk hut on the beach was really good.
We chose Scuba Caribe for a cateraman ride to Dunn's River Falls. Way fun and half the price of the lobby $42.00pp. They are a preferred vendor of the resort so don't feel like you have to use the other ones. They stop for snorkeling then to the falls. Includes drinks and the guys were alot of fun. Oh also when we went there was only 6 of us on the boat which was awesome, like having a private boat.... Out of control fun...
Also went to Magaritaville. We had a blast here even though the place was empty, but we tend to make fun anywhere we go when on vacation.A hot tub on second level where you hop in the slide to head down to the pool. It is located right on the beach also. From there we went to Lobster Dave's or Dave's Lobster. Kind of scary...but made it without any problems..Don't talk or touch anything from the people standing on the beach between Margaritaville and his little shanty. Food was good, a little more then expected 6 people $200.00 including tip (other post said $20.00pp) still a good price though. Maybe ask price before ordering. Lobster tails were small but very yummy; had a sauce on it so don't expect drawn butter..
We used a guy named Roy or "Step A Don" not sure of spelling but that's how you say it..He was the best taxi driver. We used him the whole 2 weeks we were there. We had a rainy day and called him, and he drove us all over and showed us off the beaten path things. I felt like he was family by the time we left. Just a super nice guy.
Well all in all I would recommend this Riu for vacation. I would return to this resort no problem.
