“2 Week Honeymoon”
Reviewed 16 November 2011

We spent our 2 week honeymoon here and loved the hotel. Another couple traveled with us for the first week. This resort is HUGE, but not a problem like other people stated in their review. We think after all the food you eat a little stroll does you good. The beach and water was fantastic, unlike where we stayed at the Iberostar (although a great resort) in Montego Bay. Just a few rocks and warm water; exactly what I was looking for. Only disappointing thing was the room choice.

We travel to quite a few all inclusives and have never had a problem with a free room upgrade so I ASSUMED (big mistake) we would easily get one for a honeymoon. Word of advise pay for it upfront on something special because we did not get one and they wanted $150.00 extra a day for a suite which is just a bigger room. Had I known this I would have paid a few hundred more at booking, 2 weeks in a small room was a little much. When we stayed at the Riu Vallarta they put us in a really nice suite without even asking, but lesson learned. Room was clean, and nothing was missing. We did leave tips for housekeeping every couple of days though. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but we do it because we feel like they are cleaning up after you every day so why not. I do have to agree with everyone on the musty smell though, for some reason I couldn't smell it there but when we got home and unpacked WOW. Had to send stuff to dry cleaners even if we didn't wear it. LOL Beds were ok for us, we had 2 soft pillows and 2 hard pillows, no biggie we were tired after a long day and never a problem falling asleep.

Drinks were fine. If they were watered down I didn't notice, they had no problem adding extra to any thing they put in front of you. They also did not ask for tips or treat you different if you didn't give one. We tipped off and on but the service never changed. Well with the exception of the bar on the beach. One girl put a tip basket on the counter and was pretty grouchy on top of it, but one out of the whole resort is nothing to complain about. Service was exceptional by all.

The buffet food was good; not WOW but...., I don't know about everyone else in the world but I don't have that many choices when I sit down at my table to eat. What do people expect...how bout a high five to all the chefs for managing to feed that many people 3 times a day and making it cost effective at the same time...I personally thought they did a good job and if you get tired of it go to town, or eat at one of the reservation restaurants which by the way was no problem getting. I never went to bed hungry!!!! If anything I was up a few pounds when I got home. Jerk hut on the beach was really good.

We chose Scuba Caribe for a cateraman ride to Dunn's River Falls. Way fun and half the price of the lobby $42.00pp. They are a preferred vendor of the resort so don't feel like you have to use the other ones. They stop for snorkeling then to the falls. Includes drinks and the guys were alot of fun. Oh also when we went there was only 6 of us on the boat which was awesome, like having a private boat.... Out of control fun...

Also went to Magaritaville. We had a blast here even though the place was empty, but we tend to make fun anywhere we go when on vacation.A hot tub on second level where you hop in the slide to head down to the pool. It is located right on the beach also. From there we went to Lobster Dave's or Dave's Lobster. Kind of scary...but made it without any problems..Don't talk or touch anything from the people standing on the beach between Margaritaville and his little shanty. Food was good, a little more then expected 6 people $200.00 including tip (other post said $20.00pp) still a good price though. Maybe ask price before ordering. Lobster tails were small but very yummy; had a sauce on it so don't expect drawn butter..

We used a guy named Roy or "Step A Don" not sure of spelling but that's how you say it..He was the best taxi driver. We used him the whole 2 weeks we were there. We had a rainy day and called him, and he drove us all over and showed us off the beaten path things. I felt like he was family by the time we left. Just a super nice guy.

Well all in all I would recommend this Riu for vacation. I would return to this resort no problem.

Room Tip: Pay up front for better room, way more money if you do it when you arrive

A great hotel with ocean front view. They upgraded us to a jr.suite ocean front with no charge before we arrived and when we arrived on 11-7-11 they upgraded us again to a suite ocean front with a jacuzzi at no charge!! That was beyond great service!! Ok now is some bad things could be improved on: The buffet restaurants food are not too good for a 4.5 stars..The buffet back home in the USA are much better lol..There were no seafood at all and especially the ocean is right there. The specialty restaurants food are good but the portions are way too small for most men lol..There is no sunset because we are on the wrong side of the island. Negril has sunset.. It took 2 hours to go to the airport and that is way too long after we traveled almost 10 hours from New York..Great hotel and entertainers and entertainment but we would not go back and recommend to famiiles and friends..

Room Tip: There are 4 floors..The first 2 floors you will not have a good view at the ocean..Must ask for 3rd...

My wife and I spent 10 days and got married at this resort. With the exception of the wedding team and some issues I will discuss next we had a great time. Now I URGE you to reconsider if you are thinking about getting married here!!! For starters we spent $55 (Fedex certified mail) to send our notorized copies of all our documents necessary to get a marriage license and the wedding staff lost them. These documents included notorized copies of our birth certificates, passports, and social security cards (things you don't want floating around). We received a confirmation from Fedex that they were delivered as well as a digital picture of the signature of the wedding coordinator who signed for them (and their printed name which the Fedex guy must have asked for). Despite this they refused to reimburse us for having to resend them again for another $55. The biggest issue about this is that should that info fall into the wrong hands we could have all kinds of identity theft issues in the future. That is why we payed for certified mail in the first place, but I guess it is pointless if you can't trust the people on the receiving end.
Next we were told via email by Michael our coordinator that because we were bringing so many people that we would be upgraded to a suite free of charge. Sounds good right? Well when we arrived the people at the front desk told us that the hotel was completely full (which was a lie, it was only at 40% capacity the bartenders told us later) and that we couldn't get a suite until the night before our wedding. Not a big deal, but why lie to us? Then we were given a message to meet our wedding coordinator promptly at 1pm the following day when actually he didn't show up until 2pm (there was no one in the office at all) and to top it off he couldn't find our information once again so we ended up spending close to 2hrs there getting everything sorted out.
Okay, so the day of the ceremony the group before us was running behind so we didn't start until a half hour late, but our photographer said he wouldn't charge us for the delay. Then they got the flowers we ordered wrong and sent blue ones instead of purple ones. The ceremony itself went well and our minister (we chose the religious wedding) was great. Professional, sincere, quick and funny. Dinner was at the steak house and the service there was great. The server was even going to the lobby bar to get us mixed drinks. Next we booked the disco for our reception but despite the AC being out for the past coulple days no one told us and it was around 100deg in there. Even with the doors open we couldn't get it to cool down. No one at the hotel seemed to care and everyone we asked kept telling us they were looking for the keys so they can turn on the AC. It was the DJ who told us that it had been broken the night before as well (another lie by the hotel staff). We tried to contact the wedding coordinator via the front desk and was told he had already gone home and that we could "leave a message for him to receive the next day." Seriously? Our photographer even called Michael on his personal cell phone about the situation and left him a message verifying the terrible conditions. The head photographer was great by the way! Then the next day we waited to be contacted and never was by anyone on the wedding team. Two days later (and the day before we left) I went and waited in the office until someone showed up to tell them I wasn't paying for the disco that night. I didn't mind paying for the bartender and DJs as they both had to endure the heat as well and did great jobs. The lady there told me she couldn't do anything about it and it took me waiting longer to sit down with the weekend manager of the whole resort to get the matter taken care of. Even then he argued with me about it not being that hot. Terrible service!
As for the rest of the trip we loved it. The restaurants had good food and the buffet offered different choices every night. You did have to get up early to get reservations at the fancy restaurants but honestly the buffet was our favorite (next to the Jerk Hut for lunch). The rooms were clean and our maid even asked what our drink preferences were and made sure we were always stocked with those beverages. The night time entertainment was enjoyable as were the games on the beach. Everything from the pools to the bathrooms were constanly being cleaned. It really is a nice resort, just like I mentioned above but, just don't expect any help from management if something isn't to your liking. You would think they would want to take care of their wedding parties considering all the people we brought but instead that was the only thing it seemed they couldn't do well. One last thing, PLEASE people tip when you get good service despite the resort claiming you don't have to. A couple bucks when your server/bartender/maid takes good care of you and be generous when you get great service like we did on our wedding night at the steak house.

We stayed here for 15 days and didn't really have any problems, there are few little niggles but nothing major, we had a nice room (2209) with a partial sea view & pool view room smelt a bit musty but I think this is due to the heat & air con, food was good and is probably the hottest iv had compared to other hotels, the only thing that spoilt this hotel was all the locals gather at wkends and you will find it very difficult to find a seat in the buffet let alone any FOOD!!!!! But hey we didn't starve ( just a little warning) the bar areas were a bit poor really for the size of the hotel they could do with another near the pool areas that stayed open till late at night, the beach is to die for it's fab,the jamaican people are soo lovely and friendly, all in all we had a lovely holiday

We've been to Jamaica several times, and this resort was the best in my opinion. Our first vacation was in 2007, when the resort was brand new. Besides this advantage, there was so much to do. The nightly entertainment was awesome, we barely left the resort. Great food, from local to continental, Italian and Japanese. The friendly staff, courteous and helpful made our first Jamaican vacation unforgettable.

Stayed in Feb of 2010 and have stayed at many different Riu's. The service at this one wasn't up to Riu standards. As always a good value, clean beautiful grounds, nice beach good food. Heard many of the staff transfered to the new Riu in Montego Bay and alot of the staff came from Sandels next door. They were expecting tips which Riu staff NEVER except. Resort was too big and to get a dinner reservation you had to book it by 8am, this is a policy that needs improvement. Jerk chicken on beach was great but didn't care for "new Rap" music, had to leave resort to hear Ragae.

This was my first visit to the Riu and my family and I enjoyed it immensely. Our fun started from resevations because the rate was affordable and increased as soon as we entered the beautiful grounds of the property and the super warm Jamaican welcome at check in ( excellent job Oliver Ramdeen and your team of managers and front desk staff especially Shanay). Our rooms were beautiful with a great view of the garden and the ocean but we didn't spend alot of time there because there was so much to do.There was activities for the kids (kids club), the pool, the beach, day time & night entertainment ( great enterainment crew). the dinning experience was good, they catered to everyone's palate ( a big thank you to Alshare Dixon and his team). We truly had a blast and strongly recomend Riu to everyone!!!
