+= front counter staff. They were amazing. We attended a wedding May 26th, 2014 and had to change our room because we had a cement wall on our balcony and couldn't see the ocean. Rooms are large and well maintained. The view was amazing and the ocean was steps away. The beach was clean and well maintained and they had ample "FREE' activities. The Jerk Chicken hut on the beach was a great addition. Hotel is clean and not too outdated. Bars were good. The evening shows were very nice and great to watch. The entertainment staff was very energetic. The stores on site were well priced for a resort and the hours were great. Pools were great and clean.
-= staff always on their phone hard to get their attention when you need something. mixed up our a la carte reservation twice. When trying to straighten it out restaurant staff were rude and unhelpful as well as the restaurant reservation desk. They argued with us for 10 minutes. I don't pay $3000. + to be argued with and treated disrespectfully. If you don't want to be in customer service and fix minor problems then change jobs.
The a la carte restaurants are BUFFET...a first for me in an all inclusive. again...I'm fine with breakfast and there being buffet at lunch and 1 restaurant at supper. I'm not ok with having the a la carte buffet so they can recycle the food as buffets do. At the Chinese buffet they ran out of plume sauce (again a - of a buffet) Manger told a staff member to put some more out and he argued with her saying he was too busy. We waited for 10 minutes until someone decided to put some out. The food quality was fair to ok. Sports bar was lacking in 24 hour snack food. nachos and popcorn only.
I had been told to be very careful in Jamaica with our valuables and $$$. Thankfully we had no issues.

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view make sure you get a room with a grated balcony and not a cement one.

After being back from this hotel after nearly a year and just seen some reviews i honestly don't know what hotel these people were staying at.
I was travelling with my visually impaired mum and 9 yr old son. We arrived to a smily face and great welcome took less than 10 mins to check in, then easily found our room & with every staff member we passed were greeted with smiles & hellos. After seeing our room and taking pictures of our gorgeous sea view & a quick rum from the optics we went to investigate the hotel.
We hit the family pool side and was once again met with smiles from the staff and bar staff. The pool bar staff were brilliant esp the older gentleman Clive (i think).
Food was abso amazing my son loves jamaican food and was eating allday long, ur in jamaica folks thats what they eat embrace the culture their food is gorgeous. If u want pie n chips go to blackpool.

As for comments on the watered down drinks, if i wanted more alcohol in my drink i just asked for it n they did it.

Entertainment staff were brilliant i made a few friends who i still speak now, they have a job to do and do it brilliantly. The daytime poolside entertainment is a barrel of laughs and esp when it involves alcohol .

Overall excellent holiday and the only reason i havent been back is due to the cost, it was always somewhere i wanted to take my son who is half Jamaican & we did it and will do again sometime in the future

Our family (party of 6 adults, a 6y/o & a 1.5y/o) stayed at the Riu Ocho Rios From June 14th-21st & we all had a good time.

It is about 1.5 hours away from the airport BUT a trade-off because it is VERY close to all the popular attractions (Dunns River & Dolphin Swim etc...).

Our only thing is... we booked an "Ocean-view" room (3 of them) & got a courtyard view with a view of the ocean in the horizon....... We weren't really impressed with that BUT the room was nice and cleaned well everyday with no bug problems all week & no other complaints.

The facilities have slightly dated decor but it was always well-kept & clean.
The beach was beautiful with lots of beach loungers available. The only thing is they extended the sanded area & around the volleyball court, under a thin layer of sand there is concrete making the sand pretty hard to walk on let alone play volleyball on.

All the staff - from housekeeping, to waiting staff, bartenders & front desk - were all pleasant, attentive & very friendly. The entertainment crew is great. Always interactive and encouraging people to participate... Made the days really fun!

The food.... was ok. The main buffet was satisfactory (not great but not bad)... the pizzeria was 'meh'... the Steakhouse was really good! But the Jerk Hut @ the beach for lunch was the best.

Overall, we had a good time & enjoyed ourselves. The food could have been better BUT The Good outweighed the 'criticisms' we had & we are not a fussy group of people.

Room Tip: If you want a REAL "ocean view room"... book an ocean FRONT room.

First I have to say that the waiters and waitresses here who serve your food and drinks at the meals are WONDERFUL! and the Entertainment Group was awesome and provided great shows at night and were friendly throughout the day.

With that said the bartenders and rest of the staff are horrible, dont bother asking for a bob marley even though you see pictures of them being made they will give you a dirty look and give you an attitude. Two of them made me the drink but then when i asked for another right after they refused to make it. And if you go here for a drink different from the states don't bother every drink they make you can go get at any restaurant here and has more liquor in it. This isnt a complaint but more of an fyi, the only beer they have red stripe and light red stripe, it was fine for me but just so you know. Supposedly if you tip the bartenders they will give better service but I didnt bother because why would i tip someone who treats me like that. I cannot say which ones were the worst because they all change shifts to different bars every hour. One female bartender who I think was named roxy made me a 'roxy delite" because i told her I can get all these drinks anywhere and i wanted something different. But overall the drinks are watered down and you get an attitude from the bartenders no matter what you order.

The "gourmet" food was horrible I had better food at the buffet and better service, the only thing good out of all those restaurants was the asian one and it was buffet style so it made it slightly better. The chef at the japanese one was very nice and respectful though but the food was not that great. I never had an issue with reserving the rooms since i was in deluxe but being treated horribly with everything else didnt make up for it. Dont even bother trying to get the honeymoon stuff cause we didnt get it when we arrived told them when we checked in reminded them after we realized it wasnt in the room, and told our booking rep and still never got it. Also NEVER EVER book with cheapcarribean they are no help.

I will say that the beach area was amazing blue water white sands no rocks and plenty of chairs to lay at, unfortunately since the bartenders sucked enjoying a drink on it was impossible. They do have a taxi service that was great and although its a bit overpriced the drivers definitely give you a VIP experience during it they are private cars that you take by yourself to your destination and when we went to a place that the driver knew they wouldnt call him to get us he gave us a flip phone to call him when we were done and made sure we knew the dos and donts of that specific area but thats a thanks to their company not the hotel.

Overall I wouldnt pick this hotel ever again but if you do make sure you expect bad service and just go with a normal room its not worth spending lots of money on and you still get treated like tourists.

The resort was absollutely beautiful, staff were friendly and the food was very good.
The room was clean, updated, and kept up with the entire week. The staff in the rooms were efficient, professional, and polite to an amazing degree.
The grounds were immaculate! There was seemingly someone always cleaning and making sure the grounds looked beautiful.
The staff were friendly, but not overboard. they were gracious and professional.
Food, was great. As with all inclusive, the buffets were well rotated and always freshly stocked. The reservation dining venues were all well appointed and well served.

Unfortunately RIU missed a boat on their "ADULTS ONLY" portion of the resort.
They fail to note that it really is NOT adults only, but rather gold band only portion of the resort.
The biggest FAIL of this situation is that it was not in any way reflected until we were singled out and embarassed by staff (who were very professional and tentative about it).
This situation could be easily avoided by explanation and/or CLEAR postings of the true indications of what they are implying by "ADULTS ONLY".
The "red band" side was still a blast! Our room was absolutely gorgeous and perfect!

Just go in knowing what the postings on the grounds mean to avoid embarassment.

Room Tip: Go GOLD BAND if you want the true ADULTS ONLY experience, though our red band room was beautiful.

Our family of six, us and our four children (20, 18, 16, 12) traveled to the RIU May 28th - June 4th

We arrived at the resort at 10:30 pm. The open air lobby was very welcoming!!! Our check-in was very quick and easy. Originally they had our 2 rooms down the hall from each other and didn't have anything next to each other until the next day. They next morning we went down and were able to get our rooms switched!!! We were on the the top floor, in the middle, with the most gorgeous ocean view!!! Each room had a king bed and a double. This worked great for our family!!!

The beach and the grounds at this resort were beautiful!!! Everything was very clean and the groomed. Tons of shade by the pool and on the beach.

Food:
There was a huge variety of food and we alway found something we like on the buffet. The breakfast was very good!! Tons of fresh fruit, smoothies, and omelet station. One morning they had a crepe station-YUM!!
We especially liked the Jerk Hut on the beach and ate there for lunch!!
We also ate at Sir Richards and the Steakhouse (it was easy to make reservations)!! Both were very good. I was impressed with the steaks, especially being from the mid-west!! My kids are still taking about the seafood soup they ate at Sir Richards.
Drinks:
They drinks were OK. We tried many of the daily drinks the bartenders recommended. Of course, a lot of Red Stripe! The red wine wasn't the greatest but would expect that at an all-inclusive in the Caribbean!!
Diving:
Our family did several dives with the dive shop. Our twelve year old daughter also did her whole PADI certification with the dive shop!!! The staff was absolutely amazing with her!!! I love that she got one on one instruction!!!! Definitely recommend them!!!!
Excursions:
We also did some great excursions!!!! We hired a tour guide, who I had contacted before we left!!! We did Blue Hole and the Luminous Lagoon. We loved Blue Hole!!!!! It was a blast and such an adventure for my kids!!! Will definitely go back next time we are in Jamaica!!! Chris was so good to our family!! He kept our things safe in his van during the excursions!!! And even stopped for a little shopping at the market on the way back. We also had lunch at a Jerk place!! The most wonderful jerk meat!!!!
I would highly recommend Chris Linton (Chris Jamaica Tours) kplinton@yahoo.com 876-576-2470. He made out trip extra special!!!

We definitely would stay at the RIU again and can not wait until our next trip to Jamaica!!!!

We just got back from going here to get married with a party of 28 people. Everyone had a blast and it seemed like there was something for everyone to do! The food at the buffet was good, if you are used to eating gourmet or are super picky, then maybe not, but no one in our group had a problem with it. They have a crepe station that we only saw twice during our stay, but it was awesome so be sure to get one! Also, if you cant get a reservation at one of the specialty restaurants, just go during one of there seatings and they almost always have an open table.
