This was our fourth stay at an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean and by far, The Best Yet! I'll make this review short and sweet:
1. Beach: beautiful, clear water next to a small reef great for snorkeling, plenty of space and lounge chairs, soft white sand.
2. Food: buffets offered a variety of local fare and fresh fruit; steakhouse...best tenderloin ever! Reserve early.
3. Room: clean, gorgeous view, cold air conditioner, spacious but king size bed was two full size pushed together.
4. Customer Service: fantastic! Lenroy best bartender; Adonis best waiter!
5. Entertainment: great reggae band every night as well as a well-performed nightly themed song and dance variety show
6. Excursions: no pushy sales and friendly tour guides; we went to Dunns River Falls, Bamboo Beach, and tubing down a spring-fed
river...complete blast!
7. Tipping: be fair and discreet; minimum wage in Jamaica is about $52 US a week.
Be ready for a long bus ride from airport but you stop half way for a pit stop; try the beef patties!
One Love, One Heart...Jamaica!

We stayed at the Riu June 22-29. This was our third vacation at a resort in Jamaica and our second stay at a Riu. A few years ago we stayed at the Riu in Montego Bay. We loved everything about this Ocho Rios property!

Our transfer from the airport was long. 2 hours on the bus and 2 just getting to the bus at the airport. If you come prepared for that though, its no big deal. We decided the bus transfer was a tour to see parts of the island we've never seen. We packed snacks to have with us, and picked up ice cold Red Stripe at the stop the bus made. When we arrived at the resort, the front desk staff was quick and efficient and made sure we had a drink in our hands right away. I find the Jamaican people are very much like the people of the U.S., if you treat them respectfully and friendly, they return the gesture.

We stayed on the deluxe side since we were not traveling with kids. Our room was very nice. Terrible bed cover though, but it matches the window dressing and a bench in the room so I guess it works as a whole. The bed was hard...as was every bed I've had in the Caribbean, Jamaica, Mexico and China. Are Americans the only ones that like a nice soft bed? But we were so tired every night the hard bed didn't bother us. The view was to die for! I don't think there could be a bad view in this resort. The buildings are set up like a U facing the ocean and the pool so you have a view of one or the other depending on how high your room is. We were in 1233 which was center of the building with a great view of the gardens, the pool and the ocean. It honestly was the best view of any resort we've ever stayed at.

The beach was fantastic! There's a natural breaker out in the ocean so the waves are minimal when they hit the beach. There were so many palm trees on the beach! We were always able to get loungers under a tree or out in the sun if we wanted. This is the first time we could just lay on the beach in the shade and enjoy the scenery. Every other resort we've been to (4 and 5 star rated resorts) have had minimal shade providing trees or palapas on their beaches. It always goes to whichever rude person saved it at 6am and then doesn't use them until 3. The activities are mostly sown at the other side of the resort so there is a walk required to get to them....on a fabulous beach in the sun walking with your feet in the ocean. We must have made that walk 20 times and loved it every second!!. There is great snorkeling right on the beach just past the swim rope.

The pool was really nice! it was so colorful. There is an infinity pool facing the pool bar and great seated areas in the water near the pool bar. What more can be said. We never had to search for a lounge chair. The Riu has done a fantastic job of having plenty on hand. The pool over on the other side was definitely more crowded, but they were having fun every day over there! The deluxe pool was much more quite and laid back.

The food was great. I would love to see how they produce so much food for the people in the 825 rooms they have on the resort. There was jerk chicken at every lunch and dinner. Try the great local specialties....be brave, you're on an adventure! We loved the dinner at Sir Richard gourmet restaurant. It was some of the best food I've ever had on vacation. The Japanese restaurant was disappointing because of the service. The food was good but the waitress was unhappy and the courses came out slowly. The buffets at St. Ann and Mammee were great. You can't possibly walk away hungry.

We've already decide to go back in the fall. This is a lovely resort. The people are great and the beach is wonderful. Ignore the negative reviews....one bad experience can darken your mood for your whole vacation if you let it. Or you can choose to let it go and enjoy your time in paradise.

Room Tip: The third floor gives you a nice view above the trees to the ocean.

We stayed 16-26 June 2014.
We have come back from a wonderful holiday ! Our daughter who had her wedding on the beach and it was amazing ! we also had other guests and had over 5 rooms.

Where to begin…. The hotel rooms were clean and the minibar was restocked every 2nd day. Room service was excellent and the room was always cleaned to a good standard. The maids even do towel displays which made my little boy smile. The maids are always polite and will go out of there way to help if there are any problems - which we locked ourselves out twice and they were very quick in getting us back in. Air conditioning was a god send !

The food was lovely although the baked beans are different and Inwould have just liked normal baked beans with breakfast. The food is to a high standard and there is something for everybody !
The main meals were great and a great mixture of different dishes. I saw somebody complaining and I was not sure why !

The hotel staff were exceptionally lovely and make the effort to make your stay as stress free and enjoyable as possible. Every one that served us was polite and well mannered so to see some guest being rude to them was disappointing ! we tipped a lot and had no issues with anyone from maids to waitresses to shop assistants they were all lovely !!,

The entertainment staff are amazing- PIM, We love you- You are amazinggggggg. we had hours of fun and even got up on stage and did a dance off ! YOUR HOLIDAY IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT AND IF YOU JOIN IN A HAVE FUN - HAPPINESS WILL WASH ALL OVER YOU and the stress of life will simply go away during your holiday.

Everybody at the hotel works very hard-we are early risers and the beach is cleaned up- there is always gardeners taking care of the grounds, always someone there to get you a cup of tea whatever time it is. The entertainment crew work exceptionally hard all day- They are at the pool and always doing something, then doing evening entertainment. People truly work hard here and this should be recognised!!!!!!!

We could have gone anywhere in world and we went to JAMAICA- thank goodness we did- its a beautiful country although deprived in areas the culture is amazing !!!

We went with Thomson and had a lovely rep - PAULINE- you too are amazing!!!! Always there if you need her- (except on sundays-lol) We felt very looked after and enjoyed our holiday so much we are going back 2016 !!

WE did blue hole, dolphin cove, horse riding and all excursions were fab- we had a local taxi driver Leroy take us for tour of town and to the blue hole- Such a genuine nice guy again always happy and polite. ASK for Leroy he will take you wherever you want to go and is very trusting !

The only sad part was leaving !!!!!

Lovely hotel situated on the beachfront, amazing view! This hotel has everything you need, by far the best all inclusive I have stayed in with drinks on tap (and not watered down) You even have your own mini bar in room which is fully stocked every 2nd day. The food was brilliant, a wide range of different meals provided on the buffet each day and night, you will never go hungry. The staff were wonderful, I felt very looked after during my stay, thankyou to all the waiters and entertainment staff you are doing a great job to make people feel welcomed and at ease, welldone! I will be back next year to visit jamaica again and I will be sure to stay with you again!

We visited this hotel June 2014 as a couple, il break down each area:
Arriving in jamaica: around 1.5hr transfer -lovely scenery on the way, upon arrival check in was quick, staff friendly, welcomed with cocktails, given a map of the hotel with times of restaurant opening etc, the recpetionist explained how to find our room, very easy to find.

Room: We were in the deluxe wing: When we walked in we were hit by 2 things, firstly the view we had was AMAZING ive travelled many places but that view was incredible, our balcony was huge (bigger then those around us for some reason?), the second thing we noticed was the smell of damp :-( it was a little overwhelming, we opened the balcony doors and hoped it would air out and wouldnt be a problem, Unfortunalty the next morning it still stunk! i had read previous reviews which mentioned this so i knew the likely hood of changing rooms and getting one that didnt smell was slim, we asked recpetion who said they are more then happy to change our rooms for us, but if im honest we couldnt be bothered with the hassle of repacking and then getting another smelly room, so instead i turnen the aircon off as i presummed the smell was coming out of the vents, this seemed to help, the smell slowly started going, so then every day we only put the air con on at night when we were sleeping and turned it off all day, this solved the problem so we were happy - this is something the management need to investigate though as its clearly an issue in majority of rooms. Bed was comfortable and very big, hairdryer good, bathroom lovely (cracked bath which hurt if you caught your skin on it-again needs fixing).

Pool: Both deluxe and regular pools were lovely, plenty of sun beds so you dont need to get up early to save one, we were going down at 11am with plenty of sunbeds still free. plenty of shaded areas if required, staff very friendly, pools surrounded by trees so there are leaves etc in pools, there is someone going round all the time with nets clearing them out but the leaves fall as quickly as him getting them out so it seemed a bit impossible to keep ontop of it,I dont no why this would bother anyone but there were some people moaning about it.

Beach: the end of the beach closest to the deluxe side is much cleaner then the regular side, the beach near the main hotel looks a bit dirty, rubbish plates and glasses left around by guests which i think is very rude, if you pay to go to such a beautiful place surely we should try and keep it beautiful? not litter so it looses its charm? The staff try and keep ontop of it but with so many guests its difficult, this wasnt a problem near the deluxe side, the beach was always clean and lovely.

Entertainment: WOW they work so hard! every memeber of that team is a credit and personally i enjoyed the evening shows, ive read alot of people saying how awful they were, im not sure what these people expect from an evening hotel run show? their energy was enough for me to watch :-). Fun games aorund the pool in the day-note: no entertainment on the deluxe side, all games etc take place on the beach or aroiund the normal pool, NOT deluxe.

Food: 3* i think the food and the work which needs doing to the hotel is why i gave the review 3*, the food was nice for a while but very repetative, Some lacked flavour, i appreciate they are cooking for thousands of people its difficult to cook perfection in that circumstance which is fine but then its not a 5*, The Buffet is quite big though so there is plenty of choice but you will start to find it gets repatitve.

Reception: we had an issue in the first week of our holiday- the fire alarm right outside our bedroom door kept going off, all hours of the day, 2pm, 6pm, 12am, 2am, 4am,6am (that was one day alone) i dont cope well with being woken by a fire alarm! we reported it and they said its 'maintenance checks' AT 2 4 AND 6AM????? they were not listening to me i think they thought i was saying PM, so we left it another day, happened again so we reported it again this time we were told guests set them off when their drunk, so when it happened again that night i rushed out to check and no-one was around it- so i reported it back again, long story short i reported this 5 times to 5 different people who were not listening to me or helping, finally the 6th person i spoke to actually listened, appologised and since that converstaion it never happened again (i did threaten to rip it off the wall) but it shouldnt take this long and this many woken sleeps to get this sorted, very poor service in this situation which is a shame as the staff all aorund the rest of the hotel were lovely! and the 6th person i spoke to was very polite and helpful, just a shame about the other 5.

Insects: lots of reviews moan about insects so i thought id address this: there are lots of insects yes, many which ive no idea what they even were! BUT none in our rooms, all insects we saw were in the hallways, hallways are all open aired. they didnt affect us at all. Also it clearly states in the description of the hotel that its set in tropical gardens, maybe we should all think what that actaully means before booking and then moaning about insects!

Overall we had an amazing holiday, there are down sides but we didnt let this ruin our holiday, If your someone who needs 5* everything and expect nothing less then dont go here, we would return as long as we were paying a good price for the hotel, i wouldnt go back paying top notch as personally i dont think its worth it, id rather try somewhere new for the same price.

Room Tip: Higher floors have best views!

Staff that excelled above and beyond! Shawn P at St Anns. Johnson from the front desk, Yvette or room cleaner, Knesha and Denash from the spa. They topped our vacation. As well as all of the staff. Everything was fantastic!!!! The only thing I could find that was the spa was in well need of repair on alot of issues and the supervisor at the spa was very rude to clients and staff. She needs to be replaced! Not a nice lady. I was there more than once. Other than that this vacation was one of our best!!!!
