“Rooms on the Beach, Negril”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

Rooms On The Beach, Negril had clean, modern and well maintained rooms with a cute patio. The beds were king sized and there is a room safe for your valuables. Believe me when I say, you will barely see the nice room, because the beach and access to the ocean is too sweet to be wasting time indoors. The maids were great, the bartender was a laugh and the security people kept any aggressive vendors from bothering anyone. Most vendors were actually pretty cool. Rooms that faced the ocean were facing the afternoon sun and sitting on the patio was not possible until sunset.

If you are looking at Rooms Negril from the beach, an awesome bar/restaurant is attached to the walls of the hotel on the left side. Negril Sun offers free wifi and beer thanks to my man, Bird. The smoothies and best vegetarian/traditional meals made to order were prepared by "Ricardo". Ricardo also provided us with tours to the mountains, his family farm, the caves and a true rastafarian plantation with real healers. A gang of us spent many evenings eating at Ricardo's, chilling to awesome music and beer thanks to Bird. Ricardo is like everyone in Jamaica, you have to wear many hats in order to eat. Call Ricardo at 1-876-886-4074......just go next door and chill.....don't worry about the people hanging there, it is safe and you are cared for with no one trying to take anything from you.

During our last visit to Negril, we enjoyed our stay at Rooms. The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable, lots of hot water for showers, great security and friendly staff. But most of all, we found the location to be perfect! The hotel is centrally located with lots of great restaurants and bars close by and within walking distance. However, the place we enjoyed the most was a small bar right next to the property called Negril Sun. The drinks were reasonably priced and there was always good music and good conversation. One night they prepared lobster and a few authentic Jamaican dishes for us and it was a very enjoyable experience. A special thank you to Bird and Ochi Man for arranging a lovely boat trip to Rick's Cafe - it was so beautiful to see the cliffs from the water and was one of the main highlights of our trip. The friendly Jamaican hospitality given to us by the staff at Negril Sun made us feel very welcomed and we look forward to going back to Jamaica in the very near future. We will most definitely stay at Rooms again!

My husband and I stayed at Rooms from April 5-12. Here are our thoughts...

The GOOD
Location - the location is fabulous! We really loved that area of the beach, short walking distance to many restaurants and bars. The sidewalk on the Morass side of the road starts/ends very close by, so walking is much easier at night.
Security - security is great, they really run a tight ship. No worries at all there
Staff - the staff are very pleasant and friendly. They really do want you to enjoy your stay
Rooms - the rooms overall are nice, they aren't as tired as some we've stayed in for more money. We had good water pressure and hot water in both our rooms, so no complaints there. The bed was good, pillows weren't so great but that's pretty much normal in Negril

The BAD
The wall - some people love it, I don't. To find shade, you need to be inside the wall. For me, it made me feel as though I was in a compound. When sitting in your chair you can't see the beach/ocean so I felt cut off. The security is great and I personally don't think the wall is needed, they'd still keep the vendors at bay
Service in the restaurant - very slow. Food is good, but we didn't eat there much because it took so long, even by Jamaican standards. It's not as social as many places we've stayed because the bar is uninviting and not even open in the evening...
Wifi - no free wifi in the rooms, you have to pay for it. $15 a day or so which I think is a little much; there are free computers in the lobby that can be used, but I'd rather be able to go online while having coffee on my deck in the morning
Fridges - there are no fridges in the room, you have to rent one for $8 /day (if they have any available). They are the smallest fridges made, but ours was good and cold. You just start to feel like everything is extra and you're beeing nickelled and dimed to death...

The UGLY
We arrived to find out they didn't have our reservation. They did find us a room and eventually we got the room we booked and paid for, but it was an ordeal that you just don't need on holidays.

Room TIP
Oceanfront Rooms - there are 9 in total - 3 on the 2nd floor with extremely large balconies (2602 to 2604), 3 on the ground floor with a nice porch (1901 to 1903) and 3 on the 2nd floor with no balcony at all (2901 to 2903). We were lucky enough to get one of the ground floor rooms, great for easy access to the beach. What I can't understand is that all 9 of the rooms are the same price. A room with no balcony at all should NOT be the same as one of the other 6, no comparison in my opinion.

Overall
We liked Rooms overall, but I don't think we'll ever book there again, too big a risk to take. If I do, I'll probably book directly with Superclubs. My gut tells me they don't "lose" reservations booked directly with them.

Room Tip: Oceanfront is great if you can get one with a balcony or deck

This was our first time in Jamaica & we wanted to go non AI. This is the perfect location as plenty of places to eat are within walking distance. We had a beachfront room with a huge balcony - perfect for watching the fantastic sunsets. The beach and sea are perfect & the wall works well in keeping out sellers etc. The continental breakfast is ok. We went to Cafe Goa for breakfast one morning which was delicious. We used Keith for taxis. He was great. One evening he took us to Ricks for the sunset then on to the Rockhouse for dinner. It was beautiful. Would recommend this place to stay if you don't want to do AI.

Very nice, safe, and well located hotel. Kept clean with good bathroom, safe, TV, comfortable bed. Not a luxury venue but perfect for a few days on the beach. We would certainly recommend it, especially for those traveling on a limited budget.

Really liked this place as we were two single female travelers and felt very safe here. Staff is very accommodating. Place is clean and updated with air and cable TV and internet available for a fee or free access to PCs in the lobby. Has a hair dryer, safe, balcony, and all very nice.

Did not like the free-roaming cats and of course the vendors on the beach are annoying, but if you politely decline and keep walking, they let you be. The place next door was loud at night, but that was to be expected - especially this time of year. Some people would enjoy that night life so near by. Crowing roosters are on the other side of the hotel. Continental breakfast was very good, but the same every day. There are good food spots across the street, and a Catholic church and small store. Is about 5 blocks from the Knutsford bus station, but the sidewalks are lacking. The $5 taxi ride was worth it for me.

The restaurant is not always open so one evening we went down the beach to find dinner. When we returned it was very dark and we had a hard time finding the hotel from the beachside. Word to the wise - know where to find the hotel in a dark beach environment so you don't have to go back to ask at a bar. The taxi to Rick's is available and can be arranged for free, but when you get there the driver wants $8 per person and then he will bring you back when you are ready for no additional charge. This is unusual for my experience but Ziggy was there and returned us to our Room on the Beach as requested.

The room is clean and nice! The AC was on when we came in the room, so was nice and cool, which was a pleasant surprise, and a nice to experience after travelling so long in the heat.

I have no complaints about the room what-so-ever. We are not in Negril to stay in our room, but when we do retire to the room for a break, and for the night, we are extremely comfortable. The bed is massive, and comfortable.

TV is a good size, and you have all the usual American cable channels.

The staff are friendly and accommodating.

There is a little pool, and a table-tennis table - both of which do not appear to be used by guests.

WiFi access is very expensive (starting at $15 USD / per day), but there are two PC's in the main lobby that are free to use 24/7.

The onsite gym... well lets just say it leaves a lot to be desired. If you are looking to keep up your gym regime whilst on holiday, then this probably won't do a lot for you.
