“Could be great”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

This resort has the potential to be great. Great beach. Beautiful, lush grounds. Nice staff.
We were in an a third floor oceanfront room with a beautiful terrace, so we had the best this resort had to offer. Beautiful view of the ocean and some amazing sunsets.
Food good, except for the cafeteria style buffet. Presentation of food average at best. (Also stayed at the Iberostar Grand Hall in Montego Bay and you can't compare the quality of food and how it was presented and Iberostar was less expensive).
The problem is the run down condition of the place. The pools, bathrooms in and out of the room, pool bar and some other areas around the resort are in need of some major renovations. Doesn't look as if anything has been updated since the 60s.
This resort was pricey, yet it felt at times like you were in a cheap motel when you looked around at the pools and the bathrooms. Needs major updating and then it could be great.

Room Tip: 3rd floor oceanfront had great views of the ocean/sunset and was most private. Try to get one away...

After staying at a Couples Resort the last time my wife and I were in Jamaica, we were excited to vacation to Sandals this year. We arrived at both resorts at the same time of year. Here is our comparison of the two resorts using a five star rating system.

Arrival:
Couples: 5* - Upon arrival we were promptly given a warm face cloth, a smile, a glass of champagne, and a welcoming staff member who carried our bags to our room for us. Online check in was smooth.
Sandals: 1* - We arrived to a cold reception where we were ignored for a while and then sent to an indoor air-conditioned room by ourselves with a form to fill out where we were left to wait. I had already filled in this form through the online check-in but did it again on site. After some time passed, I went wandering around looking for someone to tell us what was going on. Eventually, after asking for help, we were walked to our room by a staff member.

Restaurant Reservations:
Couples: 5* - We booked all restaurants just after arrival and were given a table at the restaurants of our choice at the time of our choosing.
Sandals: 1* - We tried to book all restaurants just after arrival but no reservations were available until late at night. We were later told that some of the tables at Sandals restaurants are reserved for concierge and butler level guests and are not made available for other guests. When we arrived to our last dinner we noticed that the restaurant list of reservations was color-coded and thought that the colour of our names on the list probably indicated to the staff that we were second-class guests. This made us feel like peasants.

In room Fridge:
Couples: 5* - Always stocked with plenty of water and beer/wine/drinks of our choosing that we selected by ticking boxes on a menu card that was left in our guest room.
Sandals: 0* - We had to fight for water the entire trip. Water bottles in the fridge were 300ml and we were told that guests can only get two per day in their fridge but could buy water at the gift shop. We told Sandals that we drink lots of water each day and were told the problem would be fixed but it was not. I eventually made sure to visit our room everyday when room service came by so I could uncomfortably bug them for some water. Also, no alcohol is given in room fridges unless guests are concierge or butler level. After paying $$$ to vacation at Sandals, in-room water and alcohol should not be withheld from guests.

Special Occasions:
Couples: 5* - We were celebrating a birthday while at the resort. I wasn't aware that the resort knew about this but they did. Chilled champagne, decorative flowers, and a birthday wish were left in our room.
Sandals: 0* - We were asked us on our check-in form if we were celebrating anything while we were there and if we had any special requests. It was my birthday during our stay so I wrote this down and said that I would love to have some Guinness in the fridge for my bday. My request was never acknowledged in any way. Anybody can ask if it's your birthday, it's the follow through that means something.

Excursions:
Couples: 5* - We only left the resort for the party cruise which was included and lots of fun.
Sandals: ? - We had intentions of taking the party cruise, however, it was a considerable extra fee like so many other things at this resort.

Food and Drink:
Couples: 5* - All food and drink was excellent! All small appliances worked as they should.
Sandals: 4* - All food and drink was good. Both toasters as well as the Cappucino/Fresh Coffee machine were broken for the duration of our stay. We were told these machines rarely work well.

Fitness Facilities:
Couples: 5+* - Excellent! I've been told the best in Jamaica. They have an open air gym, an outdoor running track through nature (800m), many tennis courts, tennis ball machines, tennis pros on hand, a full size lap pool, and much more. This was an athlete's paradise.
Sandals: 3* - Tennis courts are available but when I asked about rackets and balls, the front desk could only find one racket and no balls. They have an indoor gym with many free weights and cardio machines. The treadmills reached a max speed of 6mph. I'd never seen a treadmill this slow before - where did they find these machines?

Beach and Water Sports:
Couples: 5* - On the nicest and longest beach in Jamaica. Water sports guys were always smiling, teaching, and happy to help. All the regular sports and more are included. Large swimming area, lounge chair cushions double as floating mattresses - Awesome!
Sandals: 3* - On a very nice beach but nowhere to walk to as it is small. Small swimming area with no floating mattresses. Water sports were great and stand up paddle boarding was included too! However, some of the water sports mentioned on the website didn't actually exist at the resort - like water bikes.

Photos:
Couples: 4* - Many professional photographers roam the resort and take great pictures. Before you leave the resort, you can choose which ones to buy and take home. All photos seemed overpriced, but at least the smallest photo package was about $50.
Sandals. 3* - Many professional photographers roam the resort and take great pictures. Before you leave the resort, you can choose which ones to buy and take home. Prices here are crazy ridiculous. The smallest package to take home was well over $100 and each individual photo in that package cost more than $10. This was part of the recurring theme of heavy additional expenses incurred while vacationing at Sandals.

Staff:
Couples - 5* - All staff members were happy, helpful, polite, fun, and inclusive yet non-intrusive. This was a very happy and fun place to be.
Sandals - 5* - All staff members were happy, helpful, polite, fun, and inclusive yet non-intrusive. Perhaps this is what truly highlights the issues with this resort; Even though the staff were excellent, the experience had so many systemic problems that even an excellent staff could not make up for the many resort policies through which guests are mistreated.

Overall Impression:
Couples: 5* - We felt welcomed, pampered, valued, and excited to return and experience it all again.
Sandals: 2* - We felt like second-class citizens at this resort and we were treated differently than concierge or butler level guests. We also left this resort feeling that Sandals' way of thinking was: "We have them on the resort, now let's see what else we can sell them while they're here."

Dear BrizzleintheBay,

Thank you for staying at Couples Swept Away and posting this review. It is great to see that customers who have experienced other all-inclusive resorts recognize the Couples difference. Every single customer receives exceptional service with a warm smile.

When it comes to our inclusions, there is no catch. We mean what we say. Expect more, because we include more.

At Couples Resorts, every staff member goes out of their way to ensure guests have a memorable vacation.

Best Regards,

This was our 5th time back. We live in San Diego- it is a major PAIN to fly there. We've met people who have been back 35 times - that should speak for itself. In case it, along with the other 1000+ reviews don't tell you all you need to know...

The grounds are beautiful, the beach pristine, and the water perfect. The rooms are lovely- but not quite 5 star- if you're expecting the Ritz- its not. This is the best Jamaica has to offer. The staff, the food, the bars.... In years past we've done all the free excursions- snorkel, scuba, booze cruise. Every trip we take there has a different twist. This time we sang with Ultimate in the Piano bar every night, and danced in the aura night lounge until my wife wore me out...

The best part, though- once again- the staff. Winston, Shaun, Curtis, Damion- they could bartend anywhere. I sincerely hope Couples understands that repeaters repeat as much or more for the staff than any amenity- they are first class!

First of all, hello to Shanna Kay, who works hard but is always very friendly, unlike some grumpy robotic waitresses at Patois! And to the new dude in the juice bar at the sports complex - how quick and efficient is he??!? I don't remember his name unfortunately - thank you for doing a great job!

If the French Canadians are still there - hello to you too, you are a lovely bunch. (They entertained us with their bowls games on the beach - I think the whole beach now know who Danielle is).

We were on our honeymoon 29 Jan - 5 Feb, and got upgraded to a jacuzzi room above Patois, upon arrival, which was very nice - full sea view, a spacious balcony - thanks for that, much appreciated!

We had a great time, and after just 1 week there, felt like we've been away from home for several weeks.

For us it worked great - the tennis courts, the juices and the smoothes, the table tennis, even the resident cats. It is up to you what you make of your holiday - the facilities are very good, and they are there for your use, so pack as much in as you can.

Of course you have to book things like excursions, dinning at Feathers and Lemongrass - but my goodness, surely you can lift the handset and press one button on the speed dial?

Try out all the food, and I am sure you will find a favourite place to eat - the produce is fresh and cooked well - I grow my own fruit and veg, and I am a very good cook, and I was happy with the food. People who say only the Cabana Grill is OK to eat, have no knowledge of food, and redundant tastebuds, so they like loads of sauces and sugar and fried fried fried stuff. If you want a super healthy salad, just ask them not to put any dressing on - easy!

The place is great, the pools are not dirty, just people bring a bit of sand in during the day, but it gets hoovered up every morning. Or just walk across the road to the sports complex - there is a great lanes pool there, which is always empty.

So, like I said - all the necessary components for a great recharging holiday are there, and it's up to you what you make of it all.

Enjoy and be happy!

:o)

First class Hotel, living up to our expectations for our first visit to Jamaica. Service was exceptionally good and having a green flag service on the beach was indeed a bonus. With the beach waiter there to serve within seconds of the flag going in the sand. Only drawback, my wife found it difficult sleeping with the night time jungle noise of tree frogs and or the crickets. ME,I slept like a log the whole time.

Room Tip: Can't give a tip for a good room as I found it very good but my wife didn't like the night...

Stayed for a week in March 2013. Went with another couple. Had a wonderful time. Good job with hiring the staff as they made the visit worthwhile. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. Even though the weather wasn't perfect (out of their control!), being in "paradise" was all that mattered. We love Jamaica and Couples Swept Away was by far the best resort we've visited in our six trips. We stayed in a garden verandah room near the highway. We were never disturbed by "all night traffic".

Quick breakdown point by point:

Arrival/departure: Use Club Mobay! We arrived at a slow time so no long lines but it was still very helpful to have the attendant check your papers, guide you quickly through immigration/customs and get your luggage. The shuttle for Couples was just about to leave and they got us on it with a couple beers and some snacks to tide us over. Departure was fantastic - we had about two hours in the lounge and such a comfortable venue for waiting, full bar, food, "quiet room", "family room" and a cute little spa (that I didn't use). The bathrooms are worth it alone. There were some VERY happy campers there because it was one of the days that winter weather was forcing 1000's of North American flights to be rescheduled and some folks were having to wait hours.

Shuttle to CSA was as quick as can be given the road conditions. No offer or attempt to stop "halfway" so not sure what all that was about.

Room: We arrived, were given champagne, cold towels, seated and assigned a room. It wasn't ready but they gave us the number so we walked over and checked it out. Didn't like the location (looking right over a hot tub - could see this being noisy) so asked for a different room, which they gave us. We had reserved an ocean verandah suite and had a small glimpse of ocean from our first-floor room. We did pay $20 deposit to get the verandah door key and that was helpful going back and forth.

The room itself is...basic. Hard bed (we requested they put a topper on it after the first night and it was somewhat improved - but this is all over the Caribbean/Mexico so I won't hold it against Couple), tile floors, fridge (which they stocked nicely every day according to our wishes), regular bathroom (we didn't have a remodeled one but it was fine, if dated - lots of counter space, shower was fine). Desk, TV, one chair. You don't go there to spend lots of time in the room and it was fine. Very limited dresser space! Good safe. Only one suitcase stand and when we requested another they brought in a little table. The verandah is lovely and big but why only one comfortable chair? They really need to rethink that little concrete bench. We never used it. We requested a second chair and they brought us a beach chair which was ok for the purpose but not very comfortable. We ordered the continental breakfast tray every morning which was so nice and spent lots of time relaxing over coffee and mimosas (I would use the champagne from the room fridge and the OJ from the cont breakfast to make my own) but it would have been nicer if one of us didn't always get stuck in the "bad" chair. Odd. The wifi in the room was extremely spotty and generally poor throughout the resort except at the lobby. We would probably give the room a 7 out of 10.

Special note about room location: I read a lot about this before leaving. Here's my opinion - the rooms by the road ARE noisy. If that bothers you, then ask for something different or book up. The beachfront premium rooms look fantastic and if we ever go back, that's the only kind of room we would want. Great views of the water (almost on the beach in some cases) and huge verandahs with more furniture (I believe).

Staff: All requests were quickly met (for more towels, an extra stand for luggage, extra chair) as best they could (i.e. no second comfy chair so they brought us the beach chair) and everyone pretty friendly. Frazer at Patois bar, the staff at Lemongrass restaurant, the nail tech at the salon, most of the bars. Exceptions were a couple of the beach bars where you felt like they didn't really want to be there, especially the "middle" bar. Service on the beach was good, they came around when our flag was up but as most report, the bars are so close that it's pretty easy to just jump up and get your own drink.

Liquor: The only place that has top shelf liquor that we found was the martini bar. Others have reported it's everywhere but we couldn't find it (and staff confirmed it). We ended up pretty much sticking to beer (although the choice is only Red Stripe and sometimes Heineken and Guinness, so it gets old fast), sparkling wine (which isn't bad) and rum & cokes. Plus some of the "tropical" drinks but those are all pretty sugary and still not great liquor. A few daiquiris fun on the beach though, so can't complain, just don't go with big expectations on that score. I really wanted a good margarita and it was impossible to find (and I tried). The house wine more drinkable than any of the resorts in Mexico.

Food: The food was generally better than we've had in an all-inclusive and not completely dumbed down for US tastes (i.e. bland). There was actual spice in the jerk chicken at the beach restaurant on the south end (forget what it's called - by Patois) and we ended up eating at Lemongrass three times because of the great ambiance and the decent Thai food (which you could order spicy). Feathers was fine but I see what other reviewers mean by it needs an update. We loved Patois for the breezy tropical atmosphere and had a couple very good breakfasts here, plus decent pizza and pasta for lunch. The continental breakfast was a nice plate of fruits and a basket of croissants, pastries and banana bread. Several days that was our breakfast and we didn't move from the verandah until 11 or so. Overall good food and certainly you will never be hungry! Sometimes slow service but mostly fine. Patois the slowest at lunch/breakfast for sure but generally friendly and not a big deal - you're on vacation, have another mimosa.

Grounds/beach/vendors/other: This is getting too long so I'll add a few more notes. The reason you come here: THE BEACH. It is gorgeous. We walked south all the way to the town one day and CSA has the BEST stretch of beach on Long Bay. We never did the trading places thing to Couples Negril, so can't opine on that or make any comparison to Bloody Bay. White, cool sand and gorgeous water. It was a bit wavy a couple days because we had some storms moving through but nothing that would stop anyone from going in the water. Having the chair cushions as floats is brilliant and we spent some time on them. No problems at all getting chairs and tons of shade if you want it. Really no reason at all to get up early and "save" a chair unless you need quite a few together or you want one of the few palapas. Very comfortable and spacious beach. The grounds are very tropical too and add to the laid-back vibe that the whole resort exudes.

Vendors are constant but not a bother really at all. They just walk along announcing their wares but don't stop unless asked. I didn't see anyone aggressive and some of the musicians are quite fun.

We snorkeled twice - not too much to see, maybe it was a bad week, who knows. Easy ride out to reef and some fish but nothing too exciting.

Did the included sunset cruise which was fun but once was enough. As usual, more fun on the ride home when everyone was a little drunk. Only saw one lady with motion sickness.

Sports facilities were really nice looking but we never used (brought all our stuff but got completely lazy). Free tennis clinics and lessons and courts looked pretty good. Spa seemed nice enough but staff did seem a little disorganized. I didn't use it except for a quick polish change and the tech was very friendly. It being across the street is not a big deal at all - the security guards "cross" you each time and the grounds there are very lush and you don't have the sense of being on a busy road.

Bottom line - five-star beach, good food (especially for an AI property), okay drinks, basic rooms, friendly staff and the included extras are actually worth something. Would we go back? Probably not - lots of other places to visit but it was a very nice vacation. We did spend a couple days up on cliffs after our time at CSA to get a different perspective and I would say that if we DID go back to Negril, we would likely stay on the beach for a few days in a non-AI (or try up on Bloody Bay at CN or Grand Lido) and then several days at Rock House which we toured and LOVED.

You will have fun but do not expect a super-luxury hotel experience. This is a very Jamaican and beach-oriented vacation as everyone says. We were not disappointed and really enjoyed relaxing and eating and drinking for 7 days but it wasn't the life-changing experience it apparently is for some:)

Room Tip: Beachfront premium rooms seem like they would really be worth it. Rooms near road are noisy.
