My wife and I spent 17 days in Negril in January looking to relax do some water sports and enjoy the Jamaican sun and sand. The room was clean and comfortable. Just what we were looking for as the the beach was wonderful, breakfast and lunch with a view of the ocean. But if you are the energetic type White Sands is just about in the center of seven miles of white sand beach that you can walk or jog to your hearts content. Evenings start with a visit to the bar for a refreshment and to watch the incredible sunsets then a walk down the beach for dinner at one of the many resturants. The staff was very nice, helpfull and by the time you leave you will have made many new freinds from almost anywere in the world,Canada,Sweden,New York, just to name a few,
Thanks Again for a Wonderful Get Away

We stayed 2 nights at White Sands, Jan 8th - Jan 9th. Yes the rooms are dated but they were clean and comfortable. We stayed in the apartments which had room for 4 to sleep, a kitchen and dining area. We didn't need all of this for 2 nites but it was nice.

The maids were great, the place clean. The bar was lots of fun, returning guests and locals, which makes it fun! We ate at the restaurant for breakfast and contrary to others reports it didn't take forever, remember this is Jamaica! the food was very good.

The bar was priced just right and Tony and Paul were great! I met alot of people who were returning guests.

The beach was very nice and yes, you get haggled but if you say no we didn't continue to get haggled. I felt that my choice to say no was honored. We ate a fine dinner next door at Rainbow Arch and had pizza at Chances down the beach. No problems mon!

Francis (the owner) was very accomodating for us. Our AC was broke on arrival and they offered us a key to another room in case we were uncomfortable, we didn't need to move. I have no complaints about this hotel and will return! The gift shop seemed pretty reasonable too.

Yes there is the smell of ganja, that's everywhere on the beach, not just here. If you are looking to keep away from locals and smoke, stay in an all inclusive where that is kept away from you (I think). Otherwise there is alot to do on the beach, we took the smaller catamaran, Red Stripe and had a great snorkeling trip and a ride to the cliffs. Good lunch, lots of red stripe and punch! There is waverunning very reasonaby priced and other water sports. We walked along the beach at night and had no problems, stop by 23/7, it's a fun bar! We stopped there to catch up on football in the states.

All in all I loved Negril and the location of White Sands. Would like to stay longer to eat at some of the other restaurants but the wind always takes me north to a nice villa.

Take all other reviews for this hotel with a grain of salt - please notice that many of the reviewers stayed in the nicer/more expensive rooms and suites. I'm commenting on the standard garden room without a kitchen.

The two stars is an average:
0-1 stars for my first impression
3 stars overall, given the price for the area.

Upon arriving at White Sands, after 12 hours of travel, we checked in with a large woman at the front desk. She recited some policies of the hotel, and a man walked us to our room (G24). Though it was an hour after check-in, the room was not ready, and the man instructed us to leave our things in the room and go to the beach. Then, he opened the door. What greeted us was a swarm of ants, literally 2 feet by 2 feet, and the pungent odor of spoiled food in a half-open refrigerator. Mud and dirt all over the floor, wet linens strewn around the room, flies from the food.

In my horror, I politely asked that we check to see if there was an available room so we could rest. I really had to insist, as the attendant and a maid strongly suggested we leave our things and go to the beach, still dressed in winter clothes.

Back to the office, another pleasant experience. The same woman at the desk gave me an incredibly hard time about switching rooms, insisting we now leave our things at the desk and go to the beach until the room was ready. After a phone call and plenty of undeserved attitude, we were led to another room (G7) which was perfectly fine, already cleaned for the day. That's all I wanted! Didn't seem like too extreme of a request.

Furnishings are worn, as other comments say, but I didn't particularly care. The bathroom was a decent size and clean, plenty of dresser space and a wardrobe for clothes. Refrigerator was also a nice amenity. Rock-hard mattress. Nice little porch with table and chairs in the back, but when we tried to sit out there in the morning and evening, we were a little too overcome by the cloud of smoke...parents thinking of staying at White Sands with children, please keep in mind that "smoking" is pretty pervasive here - so much so that we could smell it strongly in our room at almost all times.

Owner and his family seem nice and accommodating...I wish his front desk staff were similar!

Beach is a 30 second walk across the busy street, clean and provides beach chairs for guests. Drinks at the bar and food at the grill were decent and somewhat reasonably priced (maybe a little expensive for the quality). A small supermarket and a bank are about a 30 minute walk into town.

Walking on the beach at any time will guarantee that you'll get hustled - selling food, water sports, crafts, weed, anything. Some hustlers are passive, others are more aggressive (i.e., will follow you and/or touch you unsolicited). I would never, ever bring kids here, and I'm not a conservative person, nor do I scare easily. I have never stayed in a resort in all of my travels, being one of the most budgety of budget travellers, but if I had to go back to Jamaica, I would cough up the money for one.

We are those type of travelers that go by the saying "you're holiday is what you make it"

This is a budget hotel. All the furniture is dated. We lost power from the late afternoon one day until the next morning.

But we were right on the beach, the staff was wonderful. Especially the maids! Wonderful ladies. And the beach was beautiful. The security gaurd was always on duty and the beach is kept very clean.

The beach vendors can get REALLY REALLY bad though. We were made extrememly uncomfortable on more than one occasion of our trip. If you go away from the front of your hotel, it can get a little rough. I really wish it wasn't like that. We're not 'hagglers' so taht kind of thing is NEVER fun for us, and the fact that people are so pushy really turned us off.

It's a pretty quiet, low key place at the end of May. We had a wonderful vacation, and a wonderful experience. Bring your own beach towels and any other amenities you may need. There's no blow dryers or any extra's you would get at a 5 star resort, and you're not paying for one.

Go to the falls - they're beautiful! Questions, no prob, message me anytime!

White Sands is just what i needed for a perfect holiday vacation. The staff is friendly and makes you feel comfortable, the other guests are great as well and make your stay feel like you are with a group of friends. The beach area is well maintained and there is lots of it whether you are looking for sun or shade and the daily drink specials served by Tony and Paul keep everyone happy. The rooms are nice and clean, I especially like the size of the Deluxe rooms and the deck area. However i really didn't spend much time in the the room as there is too much to do, see and enjoy on the beach, really only used the room at night. I have already booked for next year, hope to see you there!

You definitely should know that this is a low-key place and not fancy at all before you decide to stay there. Those familiar with all-inclusive places will probably be disappointed, simply because the standard of the place is not high and for travelers who don't care much about luxury accommodations.

The apartment we rented was very big and spacious. We had kitchen, dinning room, living room, bedroom, and bathroom. Five people could easily sleep there. The place had a feeling of a motel room from the 60s or 70s. The furniture was rather old, you saw the paint stripping here and there, and the decor was rather poor. The toilet had a rusty stain inside worth probably 10 years of not cleaning it properly. The apartment was not dirty though. The air conditioner was only in the bedroom and it was a bit too loud at night. We liked the little porch in front of the apartment with the table and chairs.

The apartment was located 15 seconds from the beach. The hotel beach was small, but there was plenty of room for the guests. The beach bar served cheap drinks, not the best quality. Breakfast and lunch available at the beach restaurant wasn't great either. We tried there the classic Jamaican breakfast and it was good. The rest of our meals we cooked in the fully equipped kitchen in our apartment.

Our neighbors had a beach towel and flip-flops stolen from their porch. We did not have any problems. Overall, if you want to rent a place in White Sands, picture yourself in a bit run-down motel 30 years ago and this way you will know what to expect.

Wow what a trip. The deluxe room at the White Sands was worth the price. During my trip i lost my money and had to have more wired to me and Francis offered to loan me money till i got my wire. WOW what customer service. The deluxe room D2 in the front near the beach has a slight beach view. The best time to visit is November/December for the dryer air and temperatures. The week was perfect.
My wife and i met a driver there licensed with the "RED" license plate that was such a pleasure to know. His van holds 7 comfortably and more if needed. His name is Harris and can be reached at 876-315-9937. He can pick you up at the airport and take you on wonderful tours. Tell him David Millar referred you. While you are in Negril tell him you would like to go to the lighthouse, then over to Rick's for an hour to watch the divers at sunset, then over to Sweet Spice restaurant for the best fried chicken you will ever taste. He did this for us and waited for us along the way for $40 bucks. Considering the time it was well worth it. What a wonderful person too.
