This was our first trip to Jamaica and we absolutely loved it. It was never on my 'list', but when our friends were having a destination wedding in January when it's freezing cold up north, we had to go! And we were sooo glad we did. It's a beautiful place, and what made it even more beautiful was staying at the Rockhouse. I'm sure the Rockhouse isn't for everyone.. if you want to stay directly ON the beach and love sand, then it's probably not for you. But if you want AMAZING views of the blue waters, private villas and patios feeling like you're on the edge of the world, great food, pool area & people, then Rockhouse IS for you! I don't like the sand, but 7 mile beach is a few minutes down the road if you wanted to visit and stay at the Rockhouse. But honestly, we had everything we wanted and more at the Rockhouse. When the water is calm you can go down the ladders and float around in the little cove, jump cliffs if you're daring, lay out at the infinity like pool, and eat at one of the restaurants. We had breakfast every day at Rockhouse restaurant, and had dinner there, the Pushcart, and a local place across the street that had amazing Lobster, Le Bar. Service was friendly, since we were part of a wedding, most of those things the service was excellent. When we were on our own at the restaurants I would say it was good. What we also liked was that you can stop at the Hilo grocery on the way and get some drinks and snacks to keep in your room. There is a mini fridge but no kitchen. We stayed in Villa 14. Would definitely recommend a villa, at least for a few nights to have the experience, then if you want to stay in a regular room or somewhere else to save, would make sense. But the villa was really great. It was a regular ocean front villa. I would say 13-16 are probably the best ones. Pretty private but still near the action. The premium villas are obviously a little nicer and newer, but they don't really offer much more for the price. I would say our friends that stay in 10 for wedding, agreed.
-10% tax and 10% service on everything at the resort, so just know it will be at least 20% more, add'l tip is optional
-bring water bottles, large cups & a small cooler if you want to bring stuff to the pool each day
-you can borrow hair dryers or irons, but not in room when you get there, also not the best ones, so if you're picky bring your own
-bring a float or snorkeling gear if you want to use alot, otherwise you can borrow/rent
-showers are outdoor in the villa but private and fine
-bring toiletries, they provide shampoo, conditioner, bar soap & aloe but that's pretty much it
-service takes awhile but pretty sure that is the norm on island time
-your fridge will be stocked with the resort stuff, they said we could take it out and put on shelf so there was room for our stuff and we wouldn't be charged if we didn't use
-water was rough some times, but pool was good for those days
-food is great!
-aren't really events there, that's why it was nice to be with a group and create our own fun..but if you're looking for some R&R you can definitely get that
-You can walk to Ricks cafe (about a mile) which is nice
All in all, it was a wonderful trip. I wouldn't say its a 5 start resort b/c if you don't like outdoor showers and want tv, then you won't be happy. But it was a perfect experience for us and to enjoy the beauty of Jamaica. We would definitely recommend and will definitely be back some time in the future. January was a wonderful time to go as well, no rain, 80's and sunny. What more could you ask for!
