This was our first trip to Jamaica and we absolutely loved it. It was never on my 'list', but when our friends were having a destination wedding in January when it's freezing cold up north, we had to go! And we were sooo glad we did. It's a beautiful place, and what made it even more beautiful was staying at the Rockhouse. I'm sure the Rockhouse isn't for everyone.. if you want to stay directly ON the beach and love sand, then it's probably not for you. But if you want AMAZING views of the blue waters, private villas and patios feeling like you're on the edge of the world, great food, pool area & people, then Rockhouse IS for you! I don't like the sand, but 7 mile beach is a few minutes down the road if you wanted to visit and stay at the Rockhouse. But honestly, we had everything we wanted and more at the Rockhouse. When the water is calm you can go down the ladders and float around in the little cove, jump cliffs if you're daring, lay out at the infinity like pool, and eat at one of the restaurants. We had breakfast every day at Rockhouse restaurant, and had dinner there, the Pushcart, and a local place across the street that had amazing Lobster, Le Bar. Service was friendly, since we were part of a wedding, most of those things the service was excellent. When we were on our own at the restaurants I would say it was good. What we also liked was that you can stop at the Hilo grocery on the way and get some drinks and snacks to keep in your room. There is a mini fridge but no kitchen. We stayed in Villa 14. Would definitely recommend a villa, at least for a few nights to have the experience, then if you want to stay in a regular room or somewhere else to save, would make sense. But the villa was really great. It was a regular ocean front villa. I would say 13-16 are probably the best ones. Pretty private but still near the action. The premium villas are obviously a little nicer and newer, but they don't really offer much more for the price. I would say our friends that stay in 10 for wedding, agreed.

Some tips:
-10% tax and 10% service on everything at the resort, so just know it will be at least 20% more, add'l tip is optional
-bring water bottles, large cups & a small cooler if you want to bring stuff to the pool each day
-you can borrow hair dryers or irons, but not in room when you get there, also not the best ones, so if you're picky bring your own
-bring a float or snorkeling gear if you want to use alot, otherwise you can borrow/rent
-showers are outdoor in the villa but private and fine
-bring toiletries, they provide shampoo, conditioner, bar soap & aloe but that's pretty much it
-service takes awhile but pretty sure that is the norm on island time
-your fridge will be stocked with the resort stuff, they said we could take it out and put on shelf so there was room for our stuff and we wouldn't be charged if we didn't use
-no TV
-water was rough some times, but pool was good for those days
-food is great!
-aren't really events there, that's why it was nice to be with a group and create our own fun..but if you're looking for some R&R you can definitely get that
-You can walk to Ricks cafe (about a mile) which is nice

All in all, it was a wonderful trip. I wouldn't say its a 5 start resort b/c if you don't like outdoor showers and want tv, then you won't be happy. But it was a perfect experience for us and to enjoy the beauty of Jamaica. We would definitely recommend and will definitely be back some time in the future. January was a wonderful time to go as well, no rain, 80's and sunny. What more could you ask for!

My friends and I went to dinner at Rockhouse last week and Flavel (think I'm spelling his name correctly) was an excellent waiter. He gave us wonderful recommendations, made us laugh and helped make our evening a fun time. Food was good (esp. the cream pie!)

So happy when I moved from Montego Bay Hilton to here. And what can I say what a world of difference. Food was excellent, villas are amazing, and service exceptional. The views here are unlike no others.

Husband and I left the freezing cold of minnesota, during the polar vortex in January, and later that day, arrived in Negril at the Rockhouse Hotel! It was a delight; like arriving at a fantasy island. First, get out of Montego Bay, fast. it felt like a carbon of Cancun, with high rises, traffic, not our bag. Get yourselves to Negril; so much more laid back, beach vibe. Second, don't let the 1.5 hour drive from the montago bay airport stop you; the rock house hotel scheduled the taxi for us, with Kenny Tours. Kenny Tours was easy, simple, slick, and the drive was quite lovely around the coast. Our driver Luke was extremely informative and very kind, as we made our first treck along the coast (never been to Jamaica). our arrival at the rockhouse was special indeed. we stayed here based on the recommendation of friends we trust, so had good vibes going in. not disappointed! it is quiet, intimate, feels like more staff than guests. everyone laid back, either dipping in pool, ocean, or enjoying the views on the chaise lounges all around the property. our villa was #16 (not premium villa but a villa). we felt it was the best view on the resort! there are small hotel rooms also at the rock house -- we did not see inside those. those seem very hidden from the ocean and I was glad we paid extra for the villa. the view cannot be described, as you wake up each morning. the maid service was quick and efficient each day; we were often sitting on our lounge chairs in the morning, and the maid got in and out so quickly. This hotel is NOT all inclusive, and we prefer that. we feel we never get our money's worth at AI, and we like to get out of our resort and look around, a lot. we stayed away from the concept of any AIs. the rock house restaurant was reasonably priced, great strong coffee and fresh OJ each morning, eggs and toast etc….all made to order, no buffet lines thank goodness (and no overeating!). interestingly, all the AI boats with the snorkelers would come around each day near the Rock house bay or cove; that is because the rock house seemed to have the best snorkeling on the island (at least the west side). we jumped in each morning to snorkel, right off our room. that was heavenly. the pool is saltwater; quite dramatic as waves crash over the rocks into the pool. one evening during the manager's social hour, we left our kindles on chaise lounges, not knowing the waves were going to soak them! we returned, and very kind staff members had moved all our stuff, towels, kindles away from the waves, around the pool. it is touches like that which make the rock house special. yes, we did some spa treatments; great but not necessary just being there creates relaxation enough! go the manager's social hour, each wed evening, meet Charlotte the GM and Pete, in charge of the rock house foundation, and listen to what they have to say about the foundation and its involvement in the local community. another touch that made us feel connected to the entire place. Luke, our same driver, picked us up and took as back to the airport when it was time to go, smooth as can be. we got off site each day for a bit; hit 7 mile beach, Rick's cafe etc…but felt so nice getting back each evening to the rock house! we want to go back with our teens! want to show them this lovely place (no kids under 12 by the way -- also quite nice)! this place is a must see! overall, jamaica is a lovely place and the people are friendly. we stayed in negril, but go around a bit; we did not get to do any of the tours to the mountains or zip lines etc. we had five nights and four full days, and those days were filled beautifully at the rock house and surrounding negril!

Room Tip: Villa #16 had a lovely view. Villa 12 was a four person villa, with loft, good for family with teens. also lovely view!
